Yeah that's what ruined his grandpa for me. I used to really like him, the wheelchair animations made me happy and feel seen, but then I found out he's just a homophobic old fart. There's genuinely no excuse for getting made uncomfortable by homosexuality in this day and age. I truly don't understand the defense of him. 'He's learning!' well gay people have been around a lot longer than he has, so he's had plenty of time to learn. There's plenty of gay people his age, so age isn't an excuse, he's just being willfully ignorant and trying to cover it up.
in fact george completely changes his mind when you become good enough friends with him and he realizes how much you and alex love each other. it’s so sweet :’)
It really shows how Evelyn is way more open minded than him, the only thing that changes between male and female farmer is Evelyn calling the farme her grandson instead of her granddaughter
I don't think he changes his "ways". More like, he doesn't understand it, but he accepts it as he sees both alex and male farmer being happy together. So more of a " not understanding but respecting" kind of way

And boy, when I saw his 8 heart event and saw his mom, and realized she looks EXACTLY like my farmer did before I gave her short hair... Basically my headcanon now is that I'm a motherly figure in his life lmao

She was my first marriage partner, and my character was female--once you developed the friendship, all her scenes were SO good and she really grew as a person! And she's a wonderful wife too ❤
Honestly I agree. And to be fair Hayley and Alex are seen as the “pairing” if not with the farmer, so I like that a lot. Hayley with female farmer is so much more interesting, and she really does become quite a sweetheart. I love all the female romance options, but Hayley definitely has the biggest personal progression which I find very cool.

They broke down the data by player or player character gender and found that Alex was the most popular bachelor among gay men and the least popular bachelor among straight women.
My personal theory is that he doesn't want to play catch with female farmers because he used to play with his mom, and doesn't want to be reminded of it because she passed.

It's kinda funny. When I first played, I quickly picked on the fact that some villagers were datable due to the (single) below the character's name and I just looked at the sprites of the characters and thought sure I'll go for this one, learned his name was Alex and soon enough was invested into the dude's story and only later learned that the dialogue was completely different depending on your character's gender.

romancing alex as a man also has alex have a gay panic because alex initially doesnt think he likes guys and you change that for him. his ten heart event (the dinner he invites you to) has him come clean about how he tried to repress his feelings for the player but just couldnt. it was really funny tho, as a gay guy playing stardew and having alex say 'i wish there were more girls in town, you know what i mean?' and i just sat there and said 'no, alex. i dont know what you mean'
Its funny I was originally going to date I think it was Shane? Though maybe it was Sebastian. Whoever he was he wasn't an option at the time though he's patched in now. So I decided on Alex instead and man am I'm glad because that was a wonderful story.
Something I noticed about Alex as well is that his reaction in the group 10 heart is also VERY different. If you’re a girl, he’ll be pissed, acting all tough and even calling you trash; but if you’re a dude, he’ll feel heartbroken and used, saying he thought “we were one of a kind” 😭😭 (Oh my god wth did I start, I just wanted to point out a neat detail in the game)

When you play as the male farmer his story becomes about him opening up, and realize a part of himself he didnt know or bother to explore before which ends up being a lot more interesting! instead of just an unremarkable jock romance when you play as a girl
I think what makes Alex more gay in the canon is the fact that he tries so hard with the female farmer, and even with the male farmer, saying "I wish there was more girls in the valley" like fr? But as he progresses with the male farmer, he opens up to him and is more genuine than with the female farmer. Or I just read too much BL who knows 💅✨
i only do alex route with M|M story, it’s way better than any other route. something about seeing alex struggle with his sexuality and his feelings towards the male farmer is too adorable
Alex is such a sweetheart once you get to know him! Also I maintain that he’s one of the few characters who actually WANTS to work live/work on the farm. Most of the others have dreams they kind of end up giving up when you marry them, but Alex discovers that living on a farm, getting a husband, and being the good dad he never had is his new dream 😭

I LOVE Alex as a female farmer! Of course his romance was so good when you play as a male farmer because of obvious reasons, but I think he shines just as bright when you romance him as a female farmer! I think people just do not give him a chance because of bad first impressions, ie. he is cocky, misogynistic and comes off as insensitive but from his dialogue it shows it does not come from a place of maliciousness and more so towards his upbringing? People forget he had an abusive father & his mother passed away, and is raised by two elderly people (and George isn’t really known to be the nicest towards people lol.) And he’s best friends with Haley who I love, but is quite the diva and primadonna! But despite all that, if you do give him a chance you slowly see his walls lowering down as he exposes himself to you. His 4, 6 & 8 heart event shows you why he acts like that and how he acknowledges his mistakes. He even apologizes to you for it, and tries to be a better man! He pours his heart out to you in your marriage with him, and he truly is the sweetest man ever :,) I know people hate his 10 heart event but I honestly loved it LOL. It is sweet and traditional, he takes you out for dinner at the saloon, he tries to impress you and confesses his love to you. So completely old-fashioned but seeing how he lives with his grandparents, it makes sense why he does so. All the other love interests’ 10 heart events have kissing + other things involved but I like how Alex’s doesn’t! Very old fashioned yet somehow gentlemanly and chivalrous 😭 And when he becomes your husband… that is when he truly shines!!! Alex is forever best boy, I love him so so much ❤😭🫶

I’m trying to romance him for the first time. This playthrough is really only my third time making a save and will be my second time getting as far as marriage despite how long i’ve own the game. And I also avoided Alex because of those first impression, or at least didn’t see him as a love interest. But for some reason during this save he was one of the character I was growing a relationship with the faster. Not sure why, since I do try to befriend everyone and attempt to remember to give gifts on birthdays so I wasn’t trying to do anything particular different. But him and Abigail were my highest hearts when it came to marriage candidates. I do like Abigail events. But I also adored Alex’s heart events. It came down to me deciding whether I wanted to be gay or straight. Every time I’ve played this game or games like this I always ended up going for the girls because I found the girls character to be more in depth as lovers. So I said, let try the straight route for once and went for Alex as it was the male character I naturally grew a relationship with the strongest just by how I was playing. I didn’t aim for him at all from the beginning, so I thought it was just neat to go with the character I somehow became the most friends with. And though I haven’t asked him to marry yet, we are dating. And I don’t hate him by any means. I do see how someone his comments come by as misogynistic, but as you said, there are reasons for that and those walls come down the more you know him. I thought him asking me out on a dinner date was adorable as I have no tradition dinner date experiences in my real life. And for all I know my character chose to have the salad. Your character is often forced into actions without your input in a lot of events, your character just chooses to do them. So maybe my character chose the salad off screen.
Not only that but if you get 15 hearts with Alex and 10 hearts with his grandfather his grandfather opens up and becomes more accepting towards you and Alex’s marriage
I always loved Alex's story while playing as a male farmer. He says he thought it was wrong to feel that way about another man, but he realized eventually that it wasn't.
Since I always default as a guy especially in video games I saw Alex and genuinely started liking him and so in my second farm I started romancing him but I was always so confused on what people meant when they said they hated him. I knew there were dialogue changes for the two genders but I didn’t know Alex had a whole personality change
I'm doing this right now! The George dialogue is also quite different. But also now that I learned what Sebastian's 14 heart event is I may have to dump him for the nerd...
@OfficalTCMnowayoutChannel I agree. While I absolutely adore the story behind Alex and a Male Famer, Alex was who I married on my first play through, so he'll always have a special place in my heart. Whenever I read things like "only male farmers should marry Alex", I feel kinda guilty, as if I played the game wrong. Which is frustrating because the whole point of Stardew marriages is that the candidates don't have set sexuality.

I think people just really want LGBTQ+ community in the game for some candidates and it ruins the games because we have people saying one gender should marry this candidate because it’s “canon” when it’s really not. What’s canon is in your story and your story alone, not what other people say. So Alex is canon to both genders if you marry him. Don’t be guilty, have fun! It’s your game and you can play it how you want!
@@HA2ARD_WARNING I completely agree and don’t think that the creator of this video is actually trying to keep girls from marrying Alex she’s making a (pretty valid) point that the relationship between Alex and the male player is much more fulfilling since, not only does Alex treat the male player with much more respect than the female counterpart, but the end of the romance includes the satisfying end of Alex eventually learning to accept himself and others in terms of homosexuality, which is only available when you play as male On the other hand, while i’ve never romanced alex in any playthrough (and i don’t know if it actually happens in the story,) i think it’d be neat if Alex’s growing friendship with the female player is an arc of his own, and he learns to drop his misogynistic tendencies and that everyone, regardless of gender, should be treated equally Again, i don’t know if that development between the female player and Alex is actually in the game, but i think it’d be almost equally fulfilling were it included, and the ending between the female vs. male player could be summed up like: Male player: no longer homophobic (but maybe still misogynistic?) Female player: no longer misogynistic (but maybe still homophobic?) Considering he’d only be able to choose *one* of growth and the other would remain, it’d be kinda bittersweet i suppose
@ChocciMilkk that's kinda already the case. Regardless of the players gender, his storyline focuses on him maturing past the toxic ideas that his abusive father taught him. Alex is never really homophobic or misogynistic. He's clearly just repeating things he learned from his father. Both storylines are already fulfilling because, ultimately, it's the same idea.
He will still always be my go to even if I only ever play as a female farmer. He was really just ignorant, he never had any ill will. He grows and learns he was a douche. People give all the slack in the world for Shane, but never give Alex a second glance.
As female character, he treat u like a cheap. As a male character, he always brag and felt that he is your idol. But I love him when he is as a husband. Especially when he is always showing off his new undie in night dialogue. A little nice show after hard work is a healing. 😂

Honestly was hoping for Alex to be more of a himbo character when dating the female farmer. Like the farmer character is canonically super strong and (if you mine) very skilled in combat, so it would be cool to see him go from being sexist to admiring her for her strength. What's better than one strong spouse? Two strong spouses.

@@HandsomeRiley aww i love haley and abi, it's been a while since i played my save file with maru but she's a sweetheart tbh! underrated spouse. i decided to go for her because my character was basically a pink alien so why not do astronomer scientist x alien. she has a whole arc where she finally proves herself to her dad (because he thinks we're fooling around in their basement or something but shes actually making a robot 😭) and she gives useful stuff like materials or batteries as presents. the only thing that bothers me is that harvey continues to crush on maru even when you're married to her, kinda like clint with emily. she literally says "harvey keeps on trying to talk to me, but all i want is a piece of this roast" like sir! move along please 😅 but yeah she's great
i picked alex at first because i was kinda sick of the usual popular choices and i was honestly surprised with how wholesome his story becomes!! especially with how his grandfather opens up to you over time. honestly my favorite part was alex being able to heal from his trauma and thanking you for giving him the family he didn’t get to have as a kid. made me cry

He’s actually really sweet towards the female farmer in the end. The rude comments were a mask and when you become his friend, he also opens up to you. And once married spends each day telling you how lucky he is and how much he loves you, helps you on the farm and is productive in his own life. ❤ Though I try to get other partners I always fall for him over again 😂
Omg this explains so much. In my play through, I made myself an androgynous male farmer and immediately took a liking to Alex. My friend told me they hated Alex but I didn’t get why until this short. They play as the female farmer. Who knew the their love for money and my love for cookies got us two different scenarios 😂

This game was wild to interact with Alex in my current playthrough. I made my farmer, realized an hour in that, in my waffling over who to make, I accidentally picked female instead of male, and had to spend some time befriending the wizard to access the gender affirming basement. The change in Alex's interaction with my farmer was immediate. The next cutscene I had with Alex was him apologizing for his attitude, so yeah. I know that specific cutscene is the same no matter what gender you pick, but damn does it hit different when you accidentally make a transmasc character 😂

I once accidentally created a trans farmer. The whole look was female, hair, skirt, name, but i forgot to change the gender. It was only when i talked to Alex that i noticed because he mentions your gender. No other villager does. Well, now Alex has a trans mtf "hubby". Sadly i could not wear a dress at the wedding.
You can change the gender of your farmer at the wizards tower. After reaching 4 hearts with the Wizard, the basement opens up, letting you access the Shrine of Illusions, where you can change gender, name, and appearance of your character, for 500G. Then the Valley would refer to them correctly ^^
I mean they are bisexual to us because we know that they are datable regardless of the gender we use. But in a specific save they can be just straight, gay or bisexual, since you only have confirmation that they are into your gender. For example with Leah, if you play as a girl she will only hint towards liking girls, even tho she could still be bi. Abigail, Sebastian and Alex on the other hand have dialogues where they mention that they never felt that way towards the same gender before, so if u are playing as the opposite gender u can just assume that they are straight since in that save file they wouldn’t have fell in love with the same gender farmer.

I love Evelyn and George's dialogue during it especially because they will say something about how they never thought gay marriage was okay until the farmer came along
playing as a guy also helps recontextualize his misogyny as a closeted boy performing heterosexuality. It makes for a really nice story of self acceptance that you just don't really get playing as a woman.

It's kinda funny. When I first played, I quickly picked on the fact that some villagers were datable due to the (single) below the character's name and I just looked at the sprites of the characters and thought sure I'll go for this one, learned his name was Alex and soon enough was invested into the dude's story and only later learned that the dialogue was completely different depending on your character's gender.

romancing alex as a man also has alex have a gay panic because alex initially doesnt think he likes guys and you change that for him. his ten heart event (the dinner he invites you to) has him come clean about how he tried to repress his feelings for the player but just couldnt.

Its funny I was originally going to date I think it was Shane? Though maybe it was Sebastian. Whoever he was he wasn't an option at the time though he's patched in now.
So I decided on Alex instead and man am I'm glad because that was a wonderful story.
Something I noticed about Alex as well is that his reaction in the group 10 heart is also VERY different.
If you’re a girl, he’ll be pissed, acting all tough and even calling you trash; but if you’re a dude, he’ll feel heartbroken and used, saying he thought “we were one of a kind” 😭😭

When you play as the male farmer his story becomes about him opening up, and realize a part of himself he didnt know or bother to explore before which ends up being a lot more interesting! instead of just an unremarkable jock romance when you play as a girl
I think what makes Alex more gay in the canon is the fact that he tries so hard with the female farmer, and even with the male farmer, saying "I wish there was more girls in the valley" like fr? But as he progresses with the male farmer, he opens up to him and is more genuine than with the female farmer.

Alex is such a sweetheart once you get to know him! Also I maintain that he’s one of the few characters who actually WANTS to work live/work on the farm. Most of the others have dreams they kind of end up giving up when you marry them, but Alex discovers that living on a farm, getting a husband, and being the good dad he never had is his new dream 😭
Alex was the first bachelor i ever married in stardew specifically because he looked like a homophobic dudebro & i immediately was like "wouldnt it be so funny if i married him"
I LOVE Alex as a female farmer! Of course his romance was so good when you play as a male farmer because of obvious reasons, but I think he shines just as bright when you romance him as a female farmer!
I think people just do not give him a chance because of bad first impressions, ie. he is cocky, misogynistic and comes off as insensitive but from his dialogue it shows it does not come from a place of maliciousness and more so towards his upbringing?
People forget he had an abusive father & his mother passed away, and is raised by two elderly people (and George isn’t really known to be the nicest towards people lol.) And he’s best friends with Haley who I love, but is quite the diva and primadonna!
But despite all that, if you do give him a chance you slowly see his walls lowering down as he exposes himself to you. His 4, 6 & 8 heart event shows you why he acts like that and how he acknowledges his mistakes. He even apologizes to you for it, and tries to be a better man! He pours his heart out to you in your marriage with him, and he truly is the sweetest man ever :,)
I know people hate his 10 heart event but I honestly loved it LOL. It is sweet and traditional, he takes you out for dinner at the saloon, he tries to impress you and confesses his love to you. So completely old-fashioned but seeing how he lives with his grandparents, it makes sense why he does so. All the other love interests’ 10 heart events have kissing + other things involved but I like how Alex’s doesn’t! Very old fashioned yet somehow gentlemanly and chivalrous 😭
And when he becomes your husband… that is when he truly shines!!! Alex is forever best boy, I love him so so much ❤😭🫶

I’m trying to romance him for the first time. This playthrough is really only my third time making a save and will be my second time getting as far as marriage despite how long i’ve own the game. And I also avoided Alex because of those first impression, or at least didn’t see him as a love interest. But for some reason during this save he was one of the character I was growing a relationship with the faster. Not sure why, since I do try to befriend everyone and attempt to remember to give gifts on birthdays so I wasn’t trying to do anything particular different. But him and Abigail were my highest hearts when it came to marriage candidates. I do like Abigail events. But I also adored Alex’s heart events. It came down to me deciding whether I wanted to be gay or straight. Every time I’ve played this game or games like this I always ended up going for the girls because I found the girls character to be more in depth as lovers. So I said, let try the straight route for once and went for Alex as it was the male character I naturally grew a relationship with the strongest just by how I was playing. I didn’t aim for him at all from the beginning, so I thought it was just neat to go with the character I somehow became the most friends with. And though I haven’t asked him to marry yet, we are dating. And I don’t hate him by any means. I do see how someone his comments come by as misogynistic, but as you said, there are reasons for that and those walls come down the more you know him. I thought him asking me out on a dinner date was adorable as I have no tradition dinner date experiences in my real life. And for all I know my character chose to have the salad. Your character is often forced into actions without your input in a lot of events, your character just chooses to do them. So maybe my character chose the salad off screen.
Not only that but if you get 15 hearts with Alex and 10 hearts with his grandfather his grandfather opens up and becomes more accepting towards you and Alex’s marriage
I always loved Alex's story while playing as a male farmer. He says he thought it was wrong to feel that way about another man, but he realized eventually that it wasn't.

@OfficalTCMnowayoutChannel I agree. While I absolutely adore the story behind Alex and a Male Famer, Alex was who I married on my first play through, so he'll always have a special place in my heart. Whenever I read things like "only male farmers should marry Alex", I feel kinda guilty, as if I played the game wrong. Which is frustrating because the whole point of Stardew marriages is that the candidates don't have set sexuality.

I think people just really want LGBTQ+ community in the game for some candidates and it ruins the games because we have people saying one gender should marry this candidate because it’s “canon” when it’s really not. What’s canon is in your story and your story alone, not what other people say. So Alex is canon to both genders if you marry him. Don’t be guilty, have fun! It’s your game and you can play it how you want!

she’s making a (pretty valid) point that the relationship between Alex and the male player is much more fulfilling since, not only does Alex treat the male player with much more respect than the female counterpart, but the end of the romance includes the satisfying end of Alex eventually learning to accept himself and others in terms of homosexuality, which is only available when you play as male
On the other hand, while i’ve never romanced alex in any playthrough (and i don’t know if it actually happens in the story,) i think it’d be neat if Alex’s growing friendship with the female player is an arc of his own, and he learns to drop his misogynistic tendencies and that everyone, regardless of gender, should be treated equally
Again, i don’t know if that development between the female player and Alex is actually in the game, but i think it’d be almost equally fulfilling were it included, and the ending between the female vs. male player could be summed up like:
Male player: no longer homophobic (but maybe still misogynistic?)
Female player: no longer misogynistic (but maybe still homophobic?)
Considering he’d only be able to choose *one* of growth and the other would remain, it’d be kinda bittersweet i suppose
@ChocciMilkk that's kinda already the case. Regardless of the players gender, his storyline focuses on him maturing past the toxic ideas that his abusive father taught him. Alex is never really homophobic or misogynistic. He's clearly just repeating things he learned from his father. Both storylines are already fulfilling because, ultimately, it's the same idea.

@@HandsomeRiley aww i love haley and abi, it's been a while since i played my save file with maru but she's a sweetheart tbh! underrated spouse. i decided to go for her because my character was basically a pink alien so why not do astronomer scientist x alien. she has a whole arc where she finally proves herself to her dad (because he thinks we're fooling around in their basement or something but shes actually making a robot 😭) and she gives useful stuff like materials or batteries as presents. the only thing that bothers me is that harvey continues to crush on maru even when you're married to her, kinda like clint with emily. she literally says "harvey keeps on trying to talk to me, but all i want is a piece of this roast" like sir! move along please 😅 but yeah she's great

He’s actually really sweet towards the female farmer in the end. The rude comments were a mask and when you become his friend, he also opens up to you. And once married spends each day telling you how lucky he is and how much he loves you, helps you on the farm and is productive in his own life. ❤

This game was wild to interact with Alex in my current playthrough. I made my farmer, realized an hour in that, in my waffling over who to make, I accidentally picked female instead of male, and had to spend some time befriending the wizard to access the gender affirming basement. The change in Alex's interaction with my farmer was immediate. The next cutscene I had with Alex was him apologizing for his attitude, so yeah. I know that specific cutscene is the same no matter what gender you pick, but damn does it hit different when you accidentally make a transmasc character 😂

I once accidentally created a trans farmer. The whole look was female, hair, skirt, name, but i forgot to change the gender. It was only when i talked to Alex that i noticed because he mentions your gender. No other villager does. Well, now Alex has a trans mtf "hubby". Sadly i could not wear a dress at the wedding.
You can change the gender of your farmer at the wizards tower.
After reaching 4 hearts with the Wizard, the basement opens up, letting you access the Shrine of Illusions, where you can change gender, name, and appearance of your character, for 500G.
Then the Valley would refer to them correctly ^^

Yes, you can marry all characters regardless of ur gender
I mean they are bisexual to us because we know that they are datable regardless of the gender we use. But in a specific save they can be just straight, gay or bisexual, since you only have confirmation that they are into your gender. For example with Leah, if you play as a girl she will only hint towards liking girls, even tho she could still be bi. Abigail, Sebastian and Alex on the other hand have dialogues where they mention that they never felt that way towards the same gender before, so if u are playing as the opposite gender u can just assume that they are straight since in that save file they wouldn’t have fell in love with the same gender farmer.
