Haha yeah don’t trip, there’s a lot of subtle things in this anime that people will try to point out, but I’m sure they were just as surprised when the episode first aired, people just love the show so much that they want you to not miss any detail which is ok/fine because we all love us some Frieren, but it’s also annoying that people do that but oh well can’t keep everyone happy 😂🙌🏾❤️

I love how many subtle touches there are to the Aura fight. There's the fact that Aura actually did check for mana suppression, because with a spell like this, of course she's paranoid about trickery. But Frieren's been doing it so long that even when checking for it, Aura didn't notice. There's the fact that even Aura's scales are fooled by Frieren hiding her mana. Aura is aware of the possibility of suppression, but she didn't design the spell to account for it, because in her eyes, who would be dumb enough to suppress their mana against this spell? There's the fact that before Frieren's side of the scales drops like a stone, the scales freeze in the middle, perfectly balanced, while Frieren explains how Aura lost. Why stop there? Because Frieren is playing with the scales like a fidget spinner before releasing her full mana. I mean, when is she going to get a chance to play with these scales again? Never, she just killed the only person in the world who knows this spell.
Then there's that 1000-year montage. There's something incredibly clever the animators did here. The thousand years between Flamme and Himmel take about 50 seconds of screen time. And then the heroes' 10-year journey to defeat the demon king flashes by in 0.5 seconds. Exactly one hundredth. We're literally seeing what those 10 years, that one hundredth, felt like to Frieren compared to her millennium of solitude.

It's interesting, we haven't actually had an explanation for what the purpose of a staff or wand is. We know it helps with spellcasting somehow, but we don't know how. (I have some guesses, but it's based on info from later episodes, so I won't say here.)

It's possible that some spells are dangerous to use without a staff. There is a scene later in the manga where Denken uses Zoltraak with his hand, and afterward his hand looks burned, presumably from using it that way (though it is not commented on so we can't be sure). Some spells may also simply require a staff, at least if the user isn't skilled enough (Ubel seems unable to use her signature cutting magic if she is not holding her staff).

When Frieren says, "Aura, kill yourself. " And then walks away, has to be one of the most cold lines ever.
I love that entire scene so much, the switch to the flashback, the music, and the voice acting was perfection. Not to mention the detail on the animation, when Aura moves the sword up to her neck, some of her hair is cut off and falls to the ground.

      @scott644 5 місяців тому +6

She used it a little. During the most intense portion of her fight and when she offed Lugner, she was holding her staff with both hands. That being said, she was clearly favoring her left arm, keeping it in positions where she required a minimum of movement of the arm, with the upper arm never diverting from a hanging vertical. I once had a similar injury and I learned you could use my forearm if careful enough, so I can vouch this was perfectly in line with reality.

Frieren is at least 1000 years old. It was 1000 years ago that she met and became Flamme's apprentice. No mention is made of how old Frieren was when she first met Flamme. Old enough at least to be the strongest mage in her village, and powerful enough to take on a demon general 1v1 in a straight fight. So that plus 1000 years of training in suppressing and growing her mana.

I've noticed a difference in Flamme and Himmel's appearance. Despite that Frieren spends 50 years having known the both of them, Himmel shrank and appeared much older, while Heiter stayed tall and appeared a bit distinguished. Flamme does look much older, but she grew old gracefully, as if aging like wine in terms of looks, despite the lines in her face.
Also, keep in mind one of the things Frieren said: "It becomes tiring after a while" And compare that to how long she sleeps into the day.
It's like working out or flexing a muscle. And she does that *constantly*
If you've ever seen Bleach, I would say compare it to Zaraki Kenpachi's first ever appearance and conflict with Ichigo, when Ichigo couldn't hurt him, he said 'Basically it's because the power I let off *unconsciously* from my skin is more than your finely honed, razor edge blade, and even If I tried with all my might to hold it in you still wouldn't be able to scratch me.'
Also, yeah, that line for how she killed her? Fuckin' *everyone* loves it. So damn cold. Ultimate disrespect. Basically like 'Yeah, I'm not gonna use my own magic to kill you. Do it yourself you fucking bitch.'

It's actually even more disrespectful than that. Someone else pointed it out in another video I saw, but Frieren tends to kill demons with the weapons they favor themselves. When the demon tried to kill her in the prison cell for instance, he tried to cut off her head, and she did the same thing back to him. Aura controls her enemies, and then chops off their head with their own swords. Frieren forced Aura to chop off her own head, with her own sword.

The previous video it was mentioned how rare Elves are now. Then we see Frieren's home village specifically targeted and destroyed by Basalt and his forces. This made me develop the theory that the Demon King foresaw or was told a prophesy that an elf would kill him so he ordered his armies to seek out and kill every elf they could find. Then after Flamme found and took in Frieren, the three demons they ran into didn't care about Flamme they just wanted the elf. In the end, the Demon King was slain by an elf.

It's a cute moment when Heiter meets Frieren and says "She has 1/5 of my mana, not bad" because the dude is so UNAWARE, but it actually means Heiter has mana of a 500 year old mage

  • @scott644
    @scott644 5 місяців тому +2

Let's think about Frieren's training on this. The first task Flamme gave Frieren was mana suppression, and Frieren commented on how it gets tiring after a while. In other words, just doing mana suppression counts as magic training. Now let's consider the more time one spends actively training, the greater their mana potential becomes. Then consider even the most dedicated practitioner would go around eight hours a day, so Frieren is effectively tripling the amount of training one could reasonably expect from a mage, giving her over 3000 years' worth of practical magic training with the resulting mana pool. Frieren's magical training was oriented from the start toward killing the demon king, and this is how - through ridiculously disproportionate quantities of training relative to how long she lived, causing her to out-power almost any other magical being. This also makes me think this is why the demon king ordered the genocide of the elves - he realized they had potential to get more powerful than him if they were allowed to survive, a situation that by his own culture's values he must never allow to occur.
Now the battle with Aura. Technically Aura did something similar - every puppet she created needed continuous mana to support it, so she was getting the 24/7 magic training like Frieren, but for only 500 years. This showcases just how much mana was being brought to bear in that final clash, however relatively peacefully the final blow was resolved (by weighing mana totals and granting control to the stronger).

  • @mookiestewart3776
    @mookiestewart3776 5 місяців тому +2

Episode 10 is one of the best episodes I’ve ever seen in any anime . Also, fun fact, Frieren knew that auras scales could be resisted with strong will, so she intentionally let aura feel in control only to smash her superiority complex with her mana. Fun fact #2, no one in the manga or anime has ever said that the mana Frieren released was her “full” mana. She may have just released enough to completely break auras spirits. The “reduce down to 10%” line has not been confirmed as true in Frierens current state , and she has shown the ability to reduce her mana to essentially zero if she wants to. TLDR, Frieren is fucking HER, and we still don’t know how strong she actually is , even in the manga .

My favorite part of this episode are the two sets of parallels.
    Fieren/Himmel:
In her first encounter with Flamme, Fieren points out that Flamme is a powerful mage. When asked why she says that, Fieren's answer is,
    English Sub: "Just a feeling."
Japanese: なんと なく / Nan to naku / Somehow or other.
Afteward, when meeting Himmel and he remarks that Fieren is a powerful mage, Fieren asks him why he says that. His answer?
    English Sub: "Just a feeling."
Japanese: なんと なく だ / Nan to naku da. / Somehow or other.
    Fieren and Fern:
Initially, when Fieren is asked if she likes magic, she confirms she does. After training with Flamme, when asked the same question, Fieren responds,
    English Sub: "Somewhat."
Japanese: "ほど ほど こ の" / Hodo hodo ko no. / Moderately.
At the end of episode one, Fieren asks Fern if she likes magic. Fern answers,
    English Sub: "Somewhat."
Japanese: ほど ほど で ございます / Hodo hodo de gozaimasu / In moderation.
Fieren smiles and remarks that she's the same way.
After that, Fieren begins to take more interest in Fern.
    -
In both cases Fieren's past with the two most important people in her life, Flamme and Himmel, greatly influence her future: encouraging her to join Himmel's party, and encouraging her to train Fern.

In episode four, the one where Frieren, Eisen and Fern look for the tree that protected Flamme's home, we find out that Frieren was an apprentice to Flamme who lived about a thousand years earlier. So we found out that Frieren was over a thousand years old back then.
Also, sure Frieren has been teaching Fern to suppress her magic, but Fern started out being good at that. When we first see Fern trying to blast a hole in the rock, she mentions that it was hard for Frieren to find her. That's because she can control her mana, which is usually the hardest thing for other new mages to learn. Fern has a natural talent for suppressing her mana.

And since the basic method (concealing your mana for a short period for stealth) isn't particularly complicated, he would have the knowledge to give her the basics. And if Heiter taught Fern the basics, Frieren spend 8 years making sure she knew the rest.

I will inform you Flamme’s voice actress Atsuko Tanaka was dead of illness yesterday. Apparently she was sick for a year. What was she thinking when she was acting Flamme?
May the great actress rest in peace.

The dub doesn't change the line. Frieren still says, "Aura, kill yourself."
Also, notice that it was said that those with strong wills can momentarily resist the scales. Aura could not at all. It shows that Aura has a weak will. Makes sense, given that she's a coward.
That's why Aura waited until after Himmel died to attack humanity again. She didn't want to risk fighting Himmel.

Aura states that Frieren had around 100 years worth of magic (before frieren showed her true strength) the same amount she thought she had when she first met her. Heiter stated when he first saw frieren that she had around a 5th of his mana as she was still consealing it, this means Heiter has at least 500 years worth of power, which is hyper impressive for a human. During their first encounter, Frieren would have been seen as the weakest of her group, knowing this its no wonder Aura misjudged Frieren's strength.

I loved these four episodes of our team of baddies killing actual baddies! The animation of episode 9 and the (back)story of 10 were my personal highlights. Also it's likely Frieren currently gives off even less than one-tenth of her full mana, as that was only the first exercise Flamme gave her (when she was still little). Nowadays I reckon she can easily surpress it to the point that most magic users barely recognize her as a experienced mage - with a thousand year of practice she can practically boost or decrease it whenever and however much she wants.

Lügner is pronounced with a vowel sound that doesn't exist in English. To get the gist of it, start with a long 'u' sound (or 'oo'), then move towards a long 'e' sound. In between the two is what 'ü' sounds like. So kind of like "loog-nair", but tilt that long 'u' sound towards a long 'e'.
In German, it means "liar". Basically all the names - both characters and places - in this show are German words, and they have meaning.
    Frieren - freezing (cold personality)
    Fern - distant (stand-off personality)
    Stark - strong
Himmel - Heaven or the heavens (the sky)
    Heiter - bright (cheerful, pleasant)
    Eisen - iron
Some of them are a bit less obvious, or even obscure, but most of those are characters you haven't met yet as of this episode.

What i rly like is that every person thinks along, guards are rly guards and you don't wanna mess with them, they all aren't just only side characters only for one reason, they all well grounded AND though out. You don't get the sense they are just there and that's it. i believe Himmel loved this view from frieren 01:23 xD it would be a cool thing when Frieren in Aureole finds Fern Parents or the Son of the Count too and they thanked her, or a few of the soldiers. When "Zoltraak" AND "Fear brought be this far" are played in one Episode, its just nuts!

I know Frieren vs. Aura overshadows this but I love Starks and Ferns fight against Linie and Lügner.
Stark is down there up against the wall against a seemingly stronger opponent. He knows that but he keeps fighting defensively to buy Fern the time to finish her fight before he gets overwhelmed and Linie goes to help Lügner.
And in the end he even manages to win because he, like a true warrior, just can take more hits than Linie.
And Fern is just up there and demonstrating what an amazing mage she has become in the time she trained with Frieren. Her ability to fire her spells fast is even enough to outdo a probably much more powerful demon mage.
And the soundtrack to that fight is perfect!

By the way, they translated it as ‘“Frieren the Slayer” but it’s original title is “Sousou no Frieren (葬送のフリーレン)” and Sousou means sending deceased person to the grave but in this title’s case not only a deceased one but also a live one so it literally means “Frieren, the sender to your grave (or funeral). Intimidating, eh?

honestly I think they were too heavy handed in the buildup to the Aura fight. "Aura, kill yourself" was still really good, but they really sapped tension by repeatedly hitting us over the head with the exact way Frieren would win. Yes, it was obvious already, but I think there still would have been value in pretending like it wasnt. They even went to the trouble of introducing the "sufficient willpower can overcome Aura's control" thing as a red herring, only to immediately say "but frieren just has more mana" like actually 4 times. This is still one of my favorite moments in the series, but maybe that's why it's also one of my biggest criticisms.

She has a nack for maxing out the disrespect nob. I’m pretty sure since it’s been exactly every single time it’s very very deliberate. Taking a demons spell, and making it “basic combat magic” then killing him with the superior version, check
Tricking Aura to use the scales, only to play with them just long enough to clue aura in that she just lost, then doesn’t even acknowledge her death, walking away after ordering her to KhS. Check, it’s really savage tbh
