An excellent video. I now have the confidence to grow shallots in my small backyard garden. I also hope for success with growing cilantro year round, leafy greens and lettuces. Thank you for your helpful guidance to growing food in California.
I love how your video shows the whole process from preparing the soil to curing the harvest! Planting shallots today in North Carolina and looking forward to a harvest next spring. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank-you for such clear instructions and for showing all the stages along the way! I had such difficulty finding how deep to plant them until your video - so THANK-YOU!
Great video. I really need to set up the watering pump and hoses for containers next year.this was my first year trying shallots and i just harvested lots. Glad i bought them. The flavor is great. Going to cut the leaves and hang them in a mesh bag like my onions and garlic.
Once again a very thorough video! I did not know how to cure them. I grew a few onions last season, was pleasantly surprised. I grew them from seed, I will have to try shallots this time. And I agree, shallots are very expensive in the stores. And thank you for talking about the southern growing time. I live just outside of Houston and Fall does seem to be a better time to grow them here with the mild winters we have. Thank you again!
I think shallots are great! I grew them last year when I was living in the UK. I hope to try growing them here in the US Midwest next year. Thanks for showing how to grow them in a container - I grew them directly in the earth, but your method would give me more options of where to put them.
Question: I am in zone 8b and planted my shallots in the fall. However, I now realize I planted them too deep as they have green tops only. Can I dig them up and replant so they are not so deep or better to dig around them like an onion so that the shallot sits on top of soil? Is it too late for them to bulb? Thank you in advance
Hello... I love you videos! So informing and easy to understand. I notice the comments are a couple of years old. Are you still making videos? Also I was wondering about buying okra seeds. Lydia
Are dried raspberries on the vine good for planting? When is the best time to start germinating seed and what type soil? Thank you always for informative videos
Thank you for your wondeerful video on shallots. Are there two different types of shaiiot i am told the one i have seed for will not grow into dividing shallots if replanted as sets pls advise me on your thoughts many thanks noel new zealand
I planted mine in a large pot in early spring. Now the shoots above the soil are in their second stage of growing straight up & green. Will the shallots actually start to push up through the soil so I’ll know when to harvest them?
excellent vid as usual. I wish to plant french beans. Could you tell me what should be the height of the grow bag and how many seeds can i sow in a grow bag? thanks
In NY you cant really do much in winter months, add lots of compost to the soil and raised beds, till the soil well and let it sit till Spring arrives!
Have grown a lot of shallots all from the same original packet bought in 2014, just save a couple from each batch and re-plant. Sow a bunch in late Autumn for spring harvest, another batch in spring. I tried to sow some big purple store bought ones but they never sprouted - is there a trick there? Do I need to let them dry out first or something? Maybe those aren't the bunching type.
Depends on how the weather is. On hot summer days, once a day and on cooler days, around 23 times a week. Fertilizer - about a handful for every sq ft is a good ballpark
A large concrete mixing tub with lots of holes drilled in the bottom works very well for this. It's only about $16 at Home Depot and makes a very inexpensive large raised bed. I would have liked to hear why not to grow them in an area where they had been grown the previous year. Also, roughly the proportions for the various components in the soil mix. Thanks.
Yes. Take them when they are small. Once they get bigger they get a little tough. they are delicious. Mine tend to have a very nice mild onion flavor. I even eat then raw.
Mine bolted after two months :( Not sure what I did wrong, the weather was great. Maybe they were just old, I'll try getting some better quality ones next time.
@@nobody46820 it is okay snipping the top of the bulb. they said that can grow the shoot faster. but don't bury them while the wound still open, since it can cause rot. just push the set/bulb lightly on the surface of soil.
Can I use bulbs I just harvested to plant in August for a spring harvest in Washington State? If so, should I cure them first before planting? And should I use the biggest bulbs or does it matter?
The best video on YT for growing shallots at home in containers. I keep coming back to it. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm growing shallots in a pot for the first time. It's been about 3 weeks and they are looking really good.

Is that a cavalier king charles??

In Iran shallots grows wild in mountains
Great video. I really need to set up the watering pump and hoses for containers next year.this was my first year trying shallots and i just harvested lots. Glad i bought them. The flavor is great. Going to cut the leaves and hang them in a mesh bag like my onions and garlic.
Even though some of the videos you make are of plants I don't use or grow in my garden, they are still entertaining and I watch every one.
I know why! You have never tried them..You do not know what you are missing!

Great! Good luck in growing them! Happy Gardening!!
Great info! Thank youi for sharing with us newbeens. I will be growing my own shallots.
I think, like garlic and unlike other onions, you can also usefully do this with shallots sold from the grocery store for eating.
i have just planted a few.. thanx for the video. though i watched it after planting, did not know when to harvest .. thanx a bunch
I love shallots and as you say the are expensive to buy. I learnt a lot of info from the video and am off to buy some sets tomorrow.
Thanks for video. Inspired me to try shallots and they are still sizing up right now. Just watched again to see when to harvest.

Good idea :)
Yes I grow them, they are so much cheaper to grow them yourself :) Excellent video as usual!
Thank you :)
Great comprehensive video. Thanks so much
you teach very well
Thanks for the video, thinking of planting a few myself, I know my parents will be planting them on their allotment.
Yay! 3-4 months of growing for a couple of weeks of shallots!
Patience is king~!
very informative. thank you, my little one wanted to grow these after watching Sarah and duck lol
Nice it a lot and I will try to put it in a bigger bucket so more I can plant more instead of one in one small pots.
Wow! Well done the Shatllo is good
Really informative video, thanks
Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Thank you! I love this video!!!
Thank you for the video!
Im from India
We call this as small onion
We have to wait till all the leaves are dired up in the soil
Then the size is much bigger than u have done
well there are a small onion that grows like shallot but is not true shallot. shallots are a different species than onion in same family. no seed

Very nice and informative video!
Great instruction and explanation, very good video!
Great video buddy. Always like watching your videos.
Thank you :)
Thank you, sir!
Yes! I am going to grow some shallots.
Are dried raspberries on the vine good for planting? When is the best time to start germinating seed and what type soil? Thank you always for informative videos
No, i recommend getting a rooted plant!
😮 so many shallots from just 5 bulbs!
I plan to grow them indoors as it is winter.
very informative! thanks
Thank you 👍
Thank you for your wondeerful video on shallots. Are there two different types of shaiiot i am told the one i have seed for will not grow into dividing shallots if replanted as sets pls advise me on your thoughts many thanks noel new zealand
Yes there are different types of shallots. Not sure what your variety is though
Thanks for the informative video. Can they be planted any time other than February? I intend to try them as soon as I can.
Yes you can plant them in August for a Spring harvest. Good luck!
If I trim the green tops off my shallots will they still make bulbs

A standard grow bag with 10 inches height, about 5 gallons of soil will work well for about 2-3 french beans plants!
I love it! It's August now so I have to wait till Fall for Spring harvest. What about the winter months what do I do? I live in NY
In NY you cant really do much in winter months, add lots of compost to the soil and raised beds, till the soil well and let it sit till Spring arrives!
Thank you for replying!
What about the green parts of the shallots? Are those edible? Chop them up and use them like chives.....?
I hope you can because I've been using the green part practically all my life. I'm waiting for an answer to your question
Yes you can!
No
Najja Foluke if you have, no reason not to carry on & enjoy!
could you please tell us what size you using the bucket or pot?
It's a interesing channel
Mine grow very well! But it got cut in half by itself but it’s looking good and it’s about 4 days
Awesome!
Good info!
do we not water when first planting the bulb? how much to water until green leaves form?
can you also start red bulb onions in late winter for spring harvest?
Yes probably around beginning of winter or late fall is a good time!
fabulous
can I plant them in a 4 inch high x 9 inch wide pot on my balcony?
Not sure why they need to be in a massive container as you show. Please explain
Same questions here, if they are so shallow rooting, and need frequent watering, why such a deep container?🤔

The sets from the stores - you just plant them as is. Most of the times they are not viable though so seeds are an option
Do you recommend anything for me to plant that will grow before winter?
Blessings
Nice 👍
So cool
Can you use the smaller bulbs to plant again?
Do you have to trim the tops occasionally?
You don't have to but you can trim and use the tops
Thanks
These are the same kind of onions which we use in samber, the small onions?
Can the green tops of shallots be used for cooking like green onions?
Yes!
Have you got a video on red onions in container grown from bulbs?
Can I grow them from the ones I buy from supermarket?
Yes
Can a sprouted shallot be planted with success in zone 9 , June …in the summer?
Yes it can be, better to wait till September though
and can you make a video on how to grow Carolina cross watermelon ?
Thanks, I will look into growing one!
Can I use NPK(20-20-20) fertilizer for my sponge gourd vines and other vegetables plants?
Yes you can!
Can you tell how many bulbs in total or how much weight you got from those 8 sets?
I didn't weigh them but it was around 35 bulbs
what is the good time to watering the sallots in a day and how much ferterliser to put to grow the 8 shallots?
Depends on how the weather is. On hot summer days, once a day and on cooler days, around 23 times a week. Fertilizer - about a handful for every sq ft is a good ballpark
Does shallot grow in cold season?
Love it...
how many garden soils did you use for the lemon tree🍋
About 6 cubic feet
can you cut off some of the green leaves like an onion while their still growing?
Yes you can! They taste very good!

There's a risk of infection.
I grew them last year with very little effort.
Hi,can we cut the leaf for cooking purpose while waiting for the shallot to grow?
How often do you water them?
Depends on how hot it is in your area.
Is the tops of the Shallotte’s spring onion?
Yes it can be used as geen or spring onions
have you ever used triple 13 fertilizer ? (13-13-13)
Seems to be a good all purpose fertilizer!
do u eat the greens of shallots?
Yes you can! I did not eat them for this time but yes they are edible!
how is the watering?
Where to purchase shallot seeds not sets
seems you successfully grow anything!
Can I harvest the shoot for cooking while the bulbs is growing? Or will it stop producing if I do? 😊
Yes you can keep harvesting the leaves while the bulb is growing!
Might want to leave some shoot and don't cut them down all at once. Take one shoot from each plant for what your intending to use.
Are shallot tops edible?
Yes they are!
When I was a child, I remember my aunt snipping off the top of the bulb before planting. Is that ok?
Same question here.
@@nobody46820 it is okay snipping the top of the bulb. they said that can grow the shoot faster. but don't bury them while the wound still open, since it can cause rot. just push the set/bulb lightly on the surface of soil.
Is it true this is no good for keto diet? Because it's grown underground
wait people dont eat the shallot leaves? Where I come from we slice up the leaves and eat them when they're green
🙂👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Can I use bulbs I just harvested to plant in August for a spring harvest in Washington State? If so, should I cure them first before planting? And should I use the biggest bulbs or does it matter?
They should store for 12 months if you do it correctly. A few months is very confusing to me. Why do they only store for a few months for people?
My sponge gourd vines are grown about 13-14 feet and haven't produce flowers.why?
They can grow very long before producing flowers, just be patient!
