- How to prevent a dry socket, answered by Dr. Mark Burhenne. Read more at askthedentist.com/how-to-heal-... You'd be amazed at how little it takes to get a dry socket after a wisdom teeth extraction. For three or four days after the extraction, don't brush the extraction site or move quickly, do exercise, sit up too quickly, play frisbee, anything physical, etc.

Great, I was worried about a root canal & now I'm more scared of dry socket.
😂😂😂😂
Baffled that no dentists in real life tell you this! They’re advising to rinse the mouth 24 hrs post extraction which is a recipe for disaster
literally zonked in my bed on painkillers worrying about dry socket, video was super helpful !! thank you
THIS WAS BETTER THAN THE DENTIST I JUST HAD DO MY WISDOM TEETH!!! THANK YOU
At the end of the day, I think the most important thing you can do is just follow your dentist or surgeon's instructions. Every case is different. I was told to begin salt water rinses 24 hours following my extraction. However, I suspect that given my particular complications (partial bony impaction and acute infection on 38, soft tissue impaction and chronic infection on 48,) my surgeon probably used synthetic bone grafts (I had sutures). Thus, the risk of dry socket was already minimal and the priority was on eliminating and preventing infection.
Good for you
I ended up with dry socket after having an extraction 2 months ago. My tooth broke and they had to cut to remove the roots. My roots are very long and are in my sinus cavity. I did not have the terrible pain that people with dry socket complain of. I went back to dentist because of some pain and discomfort, nothing major. He checked it, announced I had dry socket and prescribed antibiotics and pain meds. I had to go back twice. Since then, I have had several bone shards and the extraction site is still open. The tooth was an upper first molar (I think). I just wonder why it won't heal.
If one were to get a dry socket, when would one experience the pain? And what happens if one is prescribed anti-biotics on the day of extraction?
***** is it possible for the clot to slowly dissolve in the first week once the gums begin to close at the base of the extraction site?
hello dr mark i made an operation of impacted canine in the upper jaw they also made a bone gfart after two weeks later some particles of bone came out also gum was close o each other . after that i made second operation and after 6 days of the second operation gum does not heal doctor said we might need to make new bleeding and make stiches please tell what are options ?
hello i had a tooth extracted yesterday on my bottom front, they put a temporary bridge in the gap. they also put stitches in the vacant area before putting a fake tooth in the area. will this decrease my chances of forming a dry socket? i am a smoker and cant not smoke
is my 3 tooth pull , and is the first time I ear of this now im watching all the UA-cam videos about this
Continuation: is it normal for my incisions to still occasionally ooze post op day 3? Its not much and it stops on its own. Pain is minimal if any at all. My face is still swollen but i expect it to be. Thanks!
When I swallow, it feels like the blood clot moves up kind of. Is that normal? Is it safe to swallow?
It has been six days since my wisdom tooth was pulled the the blood clot feel out on six day is that ok?
I just got one tooth removed 5 hours ago and they didn't give me me any painkillers
is it possible to develop a dry socket 2 weeks after the extraction..? I've been fine all these days but now I suddenly have mild to moderate local pain as well as slight soreness on the corresponding side of my throat ..but no local or systemic signs of infection. I can't see an open socket there with my little mirror ..seems like there's tissue there but I wasn't able to see it fully since I don't have a dental mirror
Dry Socket will make you fall to your knees and cry.
Moderate or Slight throbbing pain is fine .
Dentist never gave me painkillers and paracetamol didn't help after having a tooth removed so I immediately had a few beers and bongs and everything was sweet.
shane goldburn i went home and had a massive bong
shane goldburn me either man i didnt get anything but antibiotics. And they wonder why ppl buy shit off the street? ? Fuck doctors judgemental pricks on high horses see us as a paycheck NOT a person in Pain.
shane goldburn I just popped 4 t3 even though I was supposed to take 2 and I smoked a j out my nose so there’s not chance of dry socket
got a dry socket now after having infected and damaged wisdom tooth removed. Been 10 days now and it hurts as hell. Just have to go through this till it heals xD
How did u manage the pain
That’s crazy got my wisdom removed 2 days ago been smoking joints and vaping smh. Definitely have to stop lmao
I’ve been cleaning if often also though
is iodoform taken away if there is an allergy? How? dry socket.
When i was eating some cake today (only been 12 hours since 4 wisdom teeth extraction), i ended up with a white clump that wasn't very big and I thought that I could taste a little bit of blood. It didn't really bleed a lot, just enough that I could taste it. I'm really paranoid about the dry socket situation, esp. since I can't see my sockets since the lighting in my house is bad enough so that I can't see it in the mirror. What are the chances that I will get a dry socket? Should I be worried?
I'm worried I might have one
My blood clot is loose and part of it fell off while i was rinsing with salt water.
your pfp explains how I felt when I read this
Did you get dry socket?
You’re done bro
Can swallowing cause a dry socket
Smoking after a Wisdom Tooth Extraction: "If it becomes dislodged at any point, it can be very painful and lead to infection.
Besides the risk of dry socket, smoking also increases your risk of developing bacteria in your mouth that will attack your gums and weaken your body’s healing ability."
Question on the above, In addition to weaken the body's healing ability what other issues can arise? Can this ever be resolved and how?
So what if its the upper tooth that's been removed... gravity is going to be against it all the way... also eating? Im a weightlifter so I eat ALOT. Surely eating is a sure fire way to loose the clot?
+tomcornwall83 just dont chew on the side that tooth pull and eat something soft 2 days. the upper tooth blood clot will stay in place what make dry socket faster is smoking
guys i was smoking after 2 hours nothing happened to me but it was not sergery my upper wisdom teeth normal extraction
I just had 28 teeth removed Monday, July 11th it's now Friday and my surgeon said no smoking for a month obviously being a smoker I am having a problem with that. I waited 3days before even attempting to smoke am I okay? I believe I am height correctly I have blood clots I stayed elevated for 3/4days..laid back took it easy also I have some stitches.. I have stuff around them which looks yellow but from what I've looked up online it's not infection or dry socket it doesn't hurt or bother me at all just a concern of what it may be I heard it was just to do with the stitch? Hope to hear from ya I have no where else to turn.
I meant healing correctly
wow 28 teeth?!! I'm so sorry you had to go thru that... how are you feeling now 6months on? did you have any complications?
RIP
That white stuff is granulation tissue its all apart of the healing process 😄 I've had 3 wisdoms out now different times too haha so i know what to look out for now
If it possible for food to mix in the blood clot?
Eww
Yes. Food particulate can find its way in between the sutures. Which is why you eat soft foods and brush.
Great that didn’t help at all I wanted to no in detail how to prevent it
Also keeping well hydrated those days
Or anyway really but especially after the procedure
man its almost impossible to do what they tell you when you have a labor intensive job, my blood clot came out while eating no matter how hard i tried it still popped rite out, currently im about 5 days in since having my tooth pulled and im not really experiencing any pain like people say you will if you get a dry socket but i know its definatly a dry socket, i havent went to a dentist yet because i have to work i might go see my dentist on my days off if i do start experiencing pain as for now i have been using clove oil on small cotton pellets and i pack that into the hole because i heard thats what the dentist basically does anyway
***** that's a little different than what happened with mine but it sounds normal I would suggest getting a small mirror and looking in your mouth if it's a dark red mass then it's a blood clot
From what I've been told the best thing to do is leave it alone but if it is big enough to cover other teeth u might want to pull it out I had a couple like that it was gross
If u pull it out it Will probably bleed again but this time put the gauze in and bite down kinda tight for 30 minutes or so to stop the bleeding and keep the clot small
I'm pretty sure my blood clot came out but luckily I don't have a dry socket since I feel no pain there
***** oh yea and when I say bite down tight I mean keep pressure on it but not so much u hurt your gums
Don't keep taking the gauze out just leave em in until u stop seeing blood oozing from the gauze
That's what I did with the inscission my dentist made to drain my abscess it was a deep cut and kept bleeding so I left the gauze in all day and kept pressure on it and it stopped
Nick 636n8r did it ever hurt?
Can I pull my second molar at home by my self? or it's too risky to break the root?
NO. Do not do this at home. Ask your dentist to remove it, its their job!
xD
I cant believe you even considered it. Thats fucking savage
Tyler Mariano trust when it gets that bad you will do anything !
Even if you're broke don't try pulling it yourself. Locate a local authority that can help you. In several states you can call 211.
sounds like you said "you want to brush the area"
I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted, my uppers dont have any incisions, they pulled-out. But my lowers were both impacted, so the surgeon had to make incisions and suture them up after. My question is,
can someone please explain this to me i had my wisdom teeth pull on tuesday 9/22/15 i took a look at the mirror to see my extraction and i notice it is all black in that area is that a blood clot or something else? and this was right after i had smoke one cigarette on the second day of my wisdom teeth extraction i know your not supposed to smoke but after seeing that black thing in my mouth i am going to wait until it heal
+MEMORY late reply but it seem like it
+MEMORY here the thing i pretty prone to pain not saying i'm tough, but i hold my ground if it doesn't kill me i won't die or cry (i'm pretty mutual) MAN!!!!!
***** don't let the name fool you constantly drunk? no but most of the time lol well how do i fix it if i do have dry socket
+MEMORY i do have a hole but it is not dark it the same color as my gum but here my question is the hole going to be there forever or through out time it will grow meat over it be fill up n cover?
+MEMORY btw i just had another extraction today top right about 2 hour ago i'm in pain right now
can i have a cig? or bong rips? its been 32 hours since my extraction..back molar
+Michael Rowe Hey man, wondering if you smoked. Got mine removed yesterday and wanna vape real bad to get the nicotine. Was it safe after 32 hours?
+Shikari Singh i stuffed my tooth with gauze i had 2 taken out molar n baby canine..fuckin 21 year old baby tooth lol but i took a dry bong rip and smoked a cig..babiest hits ever..i was more paranoid about dry socket so i stopped n waited ..so i would say you can but your not gonna enjoy the nico as much as you think.will just make you more eager to smoke ..so goodluck to you day 2 and 3 maybe 4 still baby hits cause you can feel the pressure from the sucking motion puushing the blood into thr scab..i was afraid it was gonna open but be careful! cheers
+Shikari Singh the more sleep n salt water rinses the quicker your mouth will heal..do a rinse every 2-3hours for 3 days or4
Michael Rowe
Yeah ima just wait couple more days. So i see this whitish thing forming on the blood clot 2nd day. Does that mean it's healing? Barely feel any pain, just a weird sore sensation.
+Shikari Singh the white thing is the scab. so yeah you want that over the whole opening.
Can swallowing set it off?
vinceandlilly can it?
Yes.
I have to have 30 teeth removed due to the disease I have atrophied my jaw bones. I’m so scared of dry sockets having this many teeth out at once.
Omg sorry
wish you the best!
I hope you recovered okay
I'm going for a full mouth extraction on Thursday.. This is a big fear..my luck I'll get all of them to dry socket..I have to throw those straws out..
Ivy Edan big hugs hope you are doing okay. I had some (not all) today and had no idea of the straw! In pain at the moment but dr gave me panadine forte - night time seems to be worse pain than today’s pain. Good luck x
M D K thank you! I'm starting to feel better.. And praise God, not one dry socket..They removed 18 teeth, 4 huge bones in my mouth.. I'm still on all liquid until the hole in my palet heals but its a little suffering for a life of relief
@@ivyedan7183 hope you feel better
Wat bout soda is that bad?
Beatlikmystic my dentist actually said flat soda after the extraction because I was fasting or what ever it’s called the sugary drinks helps give you energy
How long should you not smoke for?
+nicola woods You should avoid smoking for 30-50 years after the extraction.
+MEMORY I waited 3 days just because mine bled so much, I got told aswell to rinse my mouth after eating with warm salt water for a week just so it decreases the chance of sky socket
+MEMORY I waited a few days also rinse your mouth with warm salt water so it decreases the chances of dry socket
+MEMORY it should be okay if you use salt water I found it worked wonders closes the gums up quicker
How long until you can dip snuff and drink beer after
but don't you have to rinse your mouth with salt water? I'm confused
No, don't rinse for three days after the extraction -- too risky.
I did and nothing happened x)
watercat13 1# you don't HAVE to rinse your mouth with salt water for a couple of days. #2 Why argue with the dentist, man? He answered your question. SMH People..
+askthedentist Really? My dentist told me to rinse with salt water 8 hours after the extraction which I did. Not sure if I have a dry socket or not
Jd Miles2 Dentists have different rules on what to do based on what they were taught. My dentist wanted to do a root canal and crown my tooth instead of taking it out. Unfortunately the root canal failed and i had to have it removed. But I digress, it's usually best to just follow what your dentist has said to be safe.
so no burgers for how long?
I like your Ikea inbox
Negative pressure.. So I can't swallow that's nice
it feels weird swallowing though, if feels like im pulling my bood clots :( i got three removes, the bottom 2 and the top right.
Danila Flores did u get dry socket?
this didnt help at all. its impossible to swollow without adding pressure in your mouth
Mike Hawk no it’s not keep a little bit of your mouth open while you swallow then there’s no way there will be any pressure/suction
I know right! I got teeth pulled yesterday and if I swllow, I feel the blood clots moving up
crap i ran from my room to the bathroom earlier
Don't forget smoking. Smoking can pull that clot out as well..
This video is to late for me
Most doctors see you as an annoying paycheck, Not a person whos In Pain. Remember that when gaining real life advice, this guys honest. Lotta docs wont be to keep that money flowing.
