Ed, thank you for sharing. Math was very hard for me, it took me 4 times to get through Calculus 1. But I did get through it. Math makes you realize the importance of doing things in order and keeping tracking of different things, so does physics. I did try to get into the US Army to be an officer through ROTC. I was medically rejected but I did not quit, I fought all of the way. I have been successful in fields that have broken combat veterans. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom. Namaste!
Hey another guy who decided that he wasn't just gonna give up on calculus. Haha, I thought I was the only crazy one. Kudos for you keeping with it and still finding a way to help. That's huge man.
I used to think since very young age that nothing is impossible to learn, if only I just give it enough time, effort, clear explanation or experience. Everything can be broken down in simpler steps and learned. I used to never give up on even highly unlikely things. Later I realized I was wrong, and it almost completely depends on your IQ and natural talent (depending on severity). And those who just don't get things will burn a lot more energy trying to get something and even after ten times more effort they get less results. And simply it's not worth it when it comes to return on investment, especially if you have below average energy and focus span. Or, you can always make peace with the fact that everything will be harder for you then the average person, and you will work a lot more at everything just to get less results and that is that. And be grateful for what you do have.
Sure, but there's also a desire and tenacity aspect of personality. If you really want to learn or do something, you tend to work a lot hard and display a lot more grit. You don't easily get discouraged, because EVERYTHING has difficult parts. Not everyone can be like you and just accept a short coming. There is a blurry line between not having talent and just not having worked hard enough. Individual desire and tenacity make that line for most people.
@@LilYungGrabBagJr Just because you aren't gifted at something doesn't mean you can't develop that asset. You're not gonna be good at most things. Especially when you start. In fact, I'd say no one is good at anything when they first start. So then what, you just go through life with no skills? No, that's not how it works.
@@EdLatimore1 It's really about the ratio of talent compared to hard work, of course hard work being a talent as well, as it depends heavily on natural dopamine and adrenaline levels, how much effort hard work takes for you physiologically. But as a heuristic, yeah I agree, at the end of the day everyone can get better compared to their own standard, and we have no other choice but to work on getting the skills we want. I just still advise to be realistic, and know when the talent level is so low where it's simply not worth the squeeze. Giving up in certain moments is not a negative thing, it can be a positive given a certain context. For most people with an average ability, I agree hard work is worth it.

Some things are difficult, no matter how much talent you have. In fact, I'd even argue that one trainable "talent" that will make a difference is a bit of persistence. All things have an opportunity cost and a sunk cost. I think you need a certain level of delusion to not mistake the latter for the former.

You posted a message on Instagram about doing tough things, like learning a foreign language to the B1 level. Initially, I thought, "Of course I can do this in a matter of months." Finally, a little over two years later, I did it-DELF B1 in French. It's hard. You have ups and downs. If you're not strong in grammar in your native language, you'll pick up a bit of that too. It's like you mentioned in the video about math: you start at the bottom and learn your way up.
