Honestly, I'm not surprised they don't play this song live anymore... this song is vocally really challenging to hit all of the notes with just your chest voice.

people don't understand how taxing this is on the voice. I think it's really good. aaron has his moments where his voice cracks but he's high pitch singing throughout the whole song with little to no time for a breather. great song \m/

So after watching this in it's entirety, I see both sides of the argument about this vocal performance, and here's what I'll say: I've played guitar casually for over 20 years and I've sang since I was a kid, so I would say I have a bit of an ear for music. Aaron Lewis definitely struggled in this song and that's probably for a couple of good reasons. You can definitely hear that he's fatigued, and that's happened to a lot of the greats over the years. Chris Cornell as an example was one of the best singers in rock and roll, and even in the early 1990s when many of his songs were frequently sung in higher octaves, and he had a lot more piss and vinegar in him so to speak, you could hear him start to struggle more and more as the concerts went on. You can even see him get purple in the face sometimes depending on the lighting. I've never seen this full concert from Staind in it's entirety but chances are this was probably sometime in the middle of the show or towards the end. Sometimes playing a song or two will get the band warmed up, including the vocalist, but after that point, it certainly doesn't get any easier on your vocal cords. If you watch enough live shows from multiple bands, you'll often see singers take shortcuts to try to save their vocal cords, such as singing some verses in lower octaves that are in the same key so everything still sounds nice, or having a backup vocalist do more of the work which one of the other band members eventually did here.
I tried singing this song at full volume after only warming up by singing the chorus a few times and I was able to maintain my voice for the first two sets of verses and choruses, but I got tired by the third set and my voice started to crack at that point. It was surprisingly rough. My vocal range of comfort is slightly higher than Aaron's so I can typically hit the highs easier than he can, but it's still fatiguing and ever since I started using an inhaler it's ruined much of my high range because of the aerosol powder that coats my vocal cords each time I use it. So personally I would never hold his performance against him.
Some bands will also down tune their instruments so the singer can stay in a lower key permanently to preserve their voice. Examples of this would be live performances of bands like Amon Amarth who do this regularly, or Led Zeppelin when they had their big reunion concert at the London 02 arena. I saw the live video version of that concert and I used to have the album of it that they sold after, and as good as Robert Plant was over the years, I believe they only played some of the songs in the same tuning as originally performed. The only one I can remember off the top of my head was Cashmere.
The second reason for this performance is because this song is largely out of the vocal range that Aaron Lewis usually sings in like I was mentioning earlier. I have several of their records and the more of their songs you listen to, the more that you'll notice where his comfort zone is. Whether it's live or on the record, you can generally hear that Aaron has an easier time in the lower vocal range like the verses of this song, or just in general across many tracks across all of their albums such as songs like 'Outside', 'Suffer', 'Right Here Waiting', or 'Mudshovel'. He seems more comfortable at lower octaves. While conversely, I'm sure you could find another singer from a different band that could consistently stay in the higher range and it wouldn't be a big deal, but they probably wouldn't have the same cadence or solid low range that Aaron Lewis would, which is one of the hallmarks of that band in general, and what makes them unique amongst the nu metal bands from that time period.

@@StarBmak right…. Because that’s the same expectation that one would look for from the original band… if it were expected for a random person to be able to match the original band in a “cover” then why are we paying to go to concerts? For the sake of your typical comment though… I could sing it better than what’s portrayed in this video.
