It's crucial to have the optimal tv settings for the top visuals and as important, the best audio accessory to play along, be it headphones or sound bar!
I commented on his video and i say it again... I like the ZIP LINE aspect ... I have build a whole ZIP LANE network on both maps... all maximum distance and the most direct and shortest way to different bunkers and cities ( not all of them because some dont give any good items, so after i 5 stared them i avoid them ) , but i made my ZIP LANE network to the most important places and at the same time that help me cross the map and mountains fast and directly. This i liked very much to do in the game... to build those ZIP LANES to walk to the spots and place them and to upgrade and maintain them, to figure out the best places etc.... But everything else in this game is so not creative and wasted opportunity. Example a game named S.C.U.M ( yes its on PC ) you could not play it with a controller , but that game has more instresting stuff to do than Death Stranding, a game developed apparently by a genius with a lot money. *DAYS GONE* ( another good game aside from some of the drugged out story ) feels more like a apocalypse than death stranding . The BTs are pointless to fight, same with MULES ... all my zip lanes go above them or on the side ( on the side because i dont want my zip lanes in the middle of MULE or BT areas, because i have to maintain them as well ) , but mostly BT areas and MULES are not in the way of direct bunker to bunker traveling. ( With some exceptions.) Anyway those enemies are pointless to fight so you avoid them. And there is actually not much to them.... aside from some missions that force you to go into their areas they are not an important part of the game. _____________________ About the STRUCTURE building. WHy not have the option to build HUGE WATER PURIFICATION facilities or MINERAL FARMING facilities , that then give you access to new technology that you can build....maybe also have flying in the game in really late game .... or water traveling... maybe some secret CAVE areas where you farm important metal etc... If KOJIMA is such a GENIUS then why did he not think to add this to the game??? So many things could be added for the main character to do to make it more interesting...instead it's wasted opportunity. Games like S.C.U.M or Days Gone are way more interesting to play than death stranding.
@@adriel115_ I’m sorry but as someone who lives in the area, this looks nothing like it. You could do all the things you said and it still wouldn’t look like any geography in the northeast. Or really in the USA at all.
This was the PERFECT game for me to dive into when the world was locked down due to coronavirus. In the UK the rules were you couldn't travel that far away from your home so I dove very deep into this game and had a fantastic time. It honestly made my bad mental health from not being able to explore nature so much better. I really hope kojima makes a second death stranding game although the first one was so damn good that I'm not sure what they would actually be able to improve apart from graphics.
Yup 😏❤🎮 You go through hell & back to get to Port Knot City, but then you finally make it through, and the rain stops, and the sun comes out & starts shining again, and the scenery & music... my god I don't think I've ever been so in awe. I've never played a game like this before in my life. It's a truly unique experience. It's not gonna be for everyone... but it was certainly for me.
What makes Death Stranding decent is that it´s completely unique. But the music is the high point of the game, I´m not sure I would have platinumed without it. And that´s coming from someone who rarely pays attention to the music in various content. Death Stranding somehow brings the music to the foreground. It kinda makes sense since you´re basically just walking around but I believe a lot of thought was put behind every aspect of this game. It just doesn´t suit everyone. Well, it turns out it suited enough people to warrant a sequel.
That was the moment for me where all of the games systems *clicked* for me and everything made sense - from the menus , to the gameplay loop , to how to actually play the game. And it's designed to be at that moment when everything makes sense. The design and pacing in this game is in a class of its own.
I played offline with no roads or any help from fellow players. Man, it makes it so much grittier when your hiking down mountains and avoiding the shadow ghost. (I played during the holidays and all the npcs wore Santa hats, it was so wholesome.)
@@Thomastm33 yeah your Playstation uses its internal clock to have npcs where Santa hats for the week of Christmas. I was NOT expecting this and it was SO cool man. Play it during the holidays, you won't regret it.
Bro!!! Im playing right now. Just started. I connected waystation outsids of capital knot city and noticed tbe red santa hat. Thought it was just a red and white cap. Then i got to the first distribution spot and again the red hat. NOW this comment explains why lol
Exactly I first played on launch 2019 I was hooked from the get go and I found delivering packages addicting cause I was tryna get 5 stars at every location and I did just that! The story was confusing but very intriguing as I was trying to piece it together as I went through the story and it’s lore, the soundtrack of this game is absolutely beautiful and well put together, I listen to low roar regularly on Spotify and their music is very therapeutic, i replayed it again on ps5 with the directors cut trying to further remember and playthrough the story again and I actually come to a decent understanding of the lore with also the help of many videos and such… my second playthrough was a blast and even more better than the first time I played, I’m actually glad something in my gut told me to buy this game at launch and didn’t listen to the hate the game was getting for being a walking simulator which is an overstatement and it’s actually more complicated than it seems from the surface 10/10 one of the best games I played in my time of gaming and can’t wait for its sequel
I know this is awhile later but how did you feel about the acting and story? Personally I was hooked and I thought most of the scenes were good. I'm just getting a feel what others think
when you deliver her, the mom emails you and tells you she adopted her as the girls original mom is dead and she speaks no english when she adopts her. A lot of the story is also on the mails and data
I have asian co-workers who are learning English as a second language and her accent comes off as realistic. Its not some grand example of bad voice acting as Luke seems to think it is.
@@AquilaGuardThats what I thought as well. It was pretty obvious to me that the girl must’ve been adopted. The mother spoke perfect English and she was white while this girls asian. She actually had fairly good acting. He might just think it’s bad acting because of the accent and slightly rough English.
Oh, really? So I was right even though I never read that email. Honestly, it's easy to guess that she's a Japanese who happens to get stuck in the US because of the death stranding and now is forced to adapt to her environment, including language.
I literally JUST came back to this video because I played that part and read the email and thought "wait this makes perfect sense now" 😂 also I absolutely LOVED this part getting the Anti-BT gun as well!!
Same 🥺💘 When I went through hell to get to Port Knot City, and I finally made it over that hill, and "Aslylums for the Feeling" started playing, and I saw that gorgeous landscape, I was legit in awe. I've never, EVER played a game like this in my life. A truly unique experience.
Totally agree with this. I just wished that they marketed it better. I wasn’t aware of how detailed and free the game was until I took a chance and started playing it
@@whothewho82 yeah, form the outside it definitely just looks like a “walking simulator”. As much as I feel it could of been marketed better, I’m also of the mind of how would you sell it? You kind of just have to play to understand it what it’s about.
I think Kojima is similar to George Lucas when it comes to his writing. He has some great ideas but his writing usually has some very noticeable flaws especially when it comes to characters and dialogue.
@@dawsynasay4841 "being natural" was never their point. Star Wars is literally a fuc*ing opera, and Kojima's games stories always works as a parody of Hollywood films.
@@karlwest437 Considering how little trouble I have with most translated Japanese media (anime, novels, manga, etc) I think it's safe to blame Kojima-sama in this instance.
@@karlwest437 this is actually a good point, I’m portuguese and from what I see there are situations where the writing is good but to native english language people is presented as a problem. This is really interesting indeed. But no doubt some instances are quite weird for any player no matter the language haha
I loved the long cutscenes and the cinematics and not fully understanding the world until the end. The further I went, the more I got to uncover about the story and the characters and it felt great. I wish I could wipe this game from my memory and play it all over again
I was sceptical but I played this last year. The gameplay is relaxing and somewhat addictive especially when you upgrade your tools. Story is weird but u can see past it with an open mind. Graphics are great.
My mother took her own life a year before Death Stranding came out. I'm 35 now. I hadn't talked with or seen her in 14 years. Death Stranding let me be able to have the closure I was never able to in life. Was able to carry her body up a mountain, to a funeral pyre and watch her ashes drift on the wind. When I was a kid we went to Colorado together. In real life I didn't find out for 6 months that she had died and her ashes sit somewhere unknown to me. I'm not a Kojima fanboy and I only played the first four hours and yet it happened to be the most impactful gaming experience of my life. I don't know another medium that can let us existentially process death while interacting with it
I’m in the same boat regarding my mother’s death but it didn’t affect me because of the lack of interaction. Not sure how you are grieving about someone you didn’t talk to for 14 years and didn’t even know were dead until 6 months later.
I used to love coming home from work and playing this for a few hours. There’s something so cozy about it. Loved the calm rainy atmosphere. I’d do a few deliveries and listen to a podcast or something at the same time. Pausing it for the cutscenes of course. Great game.
Kojima knows how to produce an atmosphere that envelops the player...claiming it's just a walking sim is like looking at a Monet painting and calling them "flower paintings" when they're so much more
This video was a waste of my time. It's okay to dislike it and it's okay that people think you're missing points about the theme. It doesn't absolve it of bad acting or any other complaints, but there are a lot of nuances brushed over commonly in a lot of commentary.
The story is coherent, its just actually super complicated, maybe over complicated. And its delivered in the weirdest way, but it all makes sense from A to Z
I agree that the story is surprisingly coherent, but it's delivered so poorly that most people will come away with the same attitude that Luke has here. I don't blame him one bit for reacting the way he does to the story.
@@UEGMEAT they still felt very very long. Especially the final few hours of the game. Like good god I love this game but the final moments dragged on so much that I just didn't know what the hell was going on or when the game would end lol.
I was surprised how much I liked Death Stranding. It had an interesting and unique story, good characters and voice acting, tense moments when having to engage in combat on your way to your destination, good terrain challenges, fantastic soundtrack, and motorcycles and trucks were a nice addition to mix up traversal and make it more fun. And it's cool how you can form strand contracts with friends to share your world structures with each other. Can't wait to see what he comes up with for a sequel.

i love when someone tells me there will be a link in the description and then there is links to everything but what they said in the description, really shows you care. also you can think something is bad and be wrong just like other can defend things that are bad, your not enjoying something doesn't make it objectively bad just like someone enjoying something doesn't make it objectively good. but coming into a fandom and trashing it wile saying anyone who disagrees is a sycophant isn't a good argument either, it is possible you don't get things or they aren't for you and that's ok you don't need to like everything.
Your acting like you’ve seen the messages or comments he gets from said people, your making assumptions that he’s only getting decent people replying to him, giving a very levelheaded critique of his criticism, and telling him have a nice day, and anyone who’s spent time on the internet could tell you, it’s not uncommon AT ALL to get people acting like jackasses because you didn’t praise to the high heavens their favorite video game. There’s stupid jackasses in this world who don’t have other better things to do with their time, and a lot of people who use their internet anonymity to be dicks, cause they know unlike in real life, they face no consequences for it on the internet.
@valeriebasta7983 did you reply to the right comment? I didn't assume anything or state people were being polite. wtf are you even talking about lmao. However, to reply to your ramble at a comment I left a year ago, simple rule for dealing with jackasses, don't feed the trolls.
@@AzezelFallen what do you mean am I “replying to the right comment?” There isn’t any other comment in this thread, so yea I’m replying to you. clearly your not reading my comment thoroughly, all I’m doing is adding a rebuttal to your criticism to Luke. Also idk if your calling me a troll, or just referring to my original comment but yea, I agree don’t feed into em.

I totally disagree and I assume that you don’t read all the interviews and emails. All strange and weird things that are going on in the game are explained. As the story progresses, there’s even more explanation by most of the characters. I watched your video and started to play the game afterwards. I was surprised that I understood everything by paying attention. I really don’t understand why you don’t understand what’s going on in the game.
A truly remarkable gaming experience- I got back into gaming at 40, I’m a landscaper and a rock climber, spend a lot of time outside and perhaps that’s why DS appeals so much, it’s therapeutic, often banal and mostly beautiful and yet oddly difficult to recommend to anyone.
The Chiral Artist voice acting is believable. She is meant to not be speaking her native tongue. I understand what you mean, but I think it works better this way. To humanize her character more. I am bilingual myself, and I've been around people who talk worst than this. This scene was actually huge too. It's the first Sam brings people together and not just supplies. It's perfectly fine if it didn't work for a lot of people, but to me... that scene meant a lot.
Yea I think he missed that even after replaying it multiple times. The delivery was good and you the subject she’s talking about is something you should 100% know about if you’ve been paying attention while playing instead of dazing off during cutscenes or dialogue. I mean she was brought up a few times before you even get to this part.
Personally i enjoyed the creativity of the story and not the overall narrative or story. Most of the characters were cliche or just wayy too wacky. I liked the Sam vs Higgs and Cliff scenes, but i just couldn't stand spending +20 minutes with Amalie, Heartman, or Deadman, especially Amalie...
Yeah really, I mean I'm not even a Kojima fan by any means but I thought the story was the kind that gives smaller shards/clues here and there only to fit everything in its place by the end which is a reoccurring type of story telling across different type of mediums.
Hi Luke! I totally get your point and I remember being bored at some cutscenes.. I chose to be lenient because I understand that some actors being japanese, the translation and having a different voice layed over can really mess up the purpose of the intended result. Now what worries me sometimes is that people tend to stick to negatives and oversee the overall beauty that this game offers.
It’s really sad that a lot of gamers trash this game because it’s not a dopamine rush to their brains. It’s a calm game (despite the bleakness) and IT’S A WORK OF FREAKING ART. And still, underneath that, the story is incredible. It’s complex. It’s Kojima. And because it’s complex, a lot of gamers think it’s ‘arrogant and boring’. They’re missing out.
I don't know why but to me rebuilding the highway in this game is like crack cocaïne, it's all I want to do, it is my main goal before anything else, I just love it for some reason
Same! As soon as I did the first part I thought “Huh thats cool”, and then another player built the next part and my part got a bunch of ‘likes’, and I realised we’re all working together. I literally stopped everything else and focused on the highway, for like 20 hours lol.
As someone who has loved Kojima's work since the original MGS on PS1, I absolutely loved Death Stranding for daring to be different and fresh in the stale landscape of boring open world checklists ala Ubisoft and....literally everyone else. The traversal of the land was your greatest challenge, the BT's slightly less so. It was an experience that made me love gaming again!
Look, it's obvious that Kojima games aren't for everyone and I'm okay with that. Death stranding is one of my all time favorite games. It hit at the right time in my life, as I was dealing with Grief and the world was falling apart so the themes were incredibly relevant. What I appreciate about Kojima's Death Stranding is how genuine the story is. There aren't enough games out there that earnestly try to connect with their players. I'd prefer a game that tries and somewhat stumbles in it's execution to just another mascot platformer or super hero action game. To me, such things are dime a dozen. Death Stranding is a diamond in the rough.
To put 'Kojima Games' under such a broad and sweeping umbrella is a bit, I don't know, reductive? To say they're not for everyone suggests that they're all of the same quality and have the same appeal to the same people. I've been a huge fan of his work on the Metal Gear series and I also loved Zone of the Enders but even within those there have been hits and misses in terms of storytelling and gameplay, it certainly hasn't been solid gold all the way through. This one missed the mark for me, I like little flourishes of Kojima's unique weirdness draped over a bed of solid writing and gameplay but this was all weirdness and no solidarity. My problem with the story wasn't that it tried to connect with its players but that it tried to force its players to connect with the themes unnaturally. The story said 'this was your mothers dying wish, you have to fulfil your mother's dying wish' but it didn't show why, apart from blood relation, we should care, not all mothers are worthy of blind loyalty. The story said 'this is your sister, you love your sister, go on an epic quest to save your sister who you love' but it never articulated the lovable parts of your sister, it never made you as the player form any emotional attachment. The story said 'You're connecting people and that's good, people like being connected and will be gracious for your efforts' and then had them treat you just like a delivery man, they say thank you and they expect you to do your job but for the most part they'd not notice if you didn't show up one day as long as someone kept delivering the packages. The only characters that had a development arc were Deadman and Fragile, they're the only ones who treated Sam like a person rather than a service. At the end of the story I didn't feel that Sam had gained anything from his adventure, he was in exactly the same position at the end as he was at the start except that he'd suffered a lot of hardship and gained some people that demanded he did things but didn't offer anything in return. This was the overall problem with the plot, the premise was confusing and never explained effectively and the writing and performances of the characters who were supposed to carry the story failed. As previously stated I'm a big fan of Kojima and his wacky ideas but he needs someone to reign in his vision and weave it into something coherent, he needs a co writer to take the strands and make a thread (to play on the themes of the game). As Luke said, Kojima tried to do it all and it became quite apparent that while he's an extremely talented individual he's not the whole package. I just hope that he learns to delegate tasks when/if there is a sequel.
@@DjDolHaus86 I agree. I liked Death Stranding for the most part. But the ending and final section fell flat for me. It's too meta and tries to bombard you with surprises. They didn't lay down much with the Mother and Sister to make any of the twists worthwhile. It was the journey that was enjoyable for the most part for me and that's what I take away from it. Still a good game, but story was trying to do and tell to much.
So you basically are the “you just don’t get it” type of guy Luke was describing in this video 😂 buddy a game like Death Stranding can be great at its core, but also deserve some valid criticisms like the ones in this video
Same. Not about the grief and everything but i played it at just the right time, actually it was my 3rd time trying to get into it but for some reason it did on the try and my god I was hooked. There was something relaxing and therapeutic about getting the materials to build roads all across the map and don’t get me started on making a zip line system that went to all the shelters, once I figured those out I was hooked!!!
I played death stranding while I was having a really rough time, I would say it's the type of game where your enjoyment is tied to your mental state. I really needed it.
I actually really enjoyed this game. I went into it for the story, knowing the gameplay might be subpar. The story got a little weird, but I still felt engaged with it, and the gameplay loop kept me eager to keep playing and obtain that next upgrade that makes exploring a bit easier. I really did like planning and building the infrastructure, trying to be as efficient as possible. The landscape was beautiful to look at and drive through. I did get disappointed near the end though, because I kinda knew the ending wasnt too far away. It made me not really care about the infrastructure as much, since it was soon going to be irrelevant. I had no interest in 'aceing' the missions after I beat the game, so I stopped caring about it a bit. Instead of building a large zipline network or anything like that, I just did the bare minimum to get to the end. I was also disappointed by the size of the map. I know others will call me crazy, but I think it should have been bigger, with more methods to traverse the terrain getting unlocked. When you start, and you find your first base, and it pops up on the map of the US, your like "Wow, this is gonna be EPIC!" As you play the game, you realize that you can drive across america in like 10 minutes. There was never really a reason to go back east, and the west was just the endgame, so yeah I dono....it felt small to me.
I loved this game, the end scene on the beach was so emotional and so well done, it was the closest to having a wee tear in my eye I’ve ever had in a game, no game has had that impact on me before or since. What a fantastic adventure and experience the game gives to the player, the gameplay is addictive and you get lost in the world of death stranding.
I honestly don't this this dude has ever watched any sort of media. Story progression and revealing more parts of a story is a way to keep the audience interested. This game has fantastic story telling, a task that should be boring that has been made fun and interesting, and a great acting.
@@AntiChris84but yet the guy in the video he says “people don’t wanna admit there’s a problem “ like bro himself can’t agree others have opinions too lmao
The cars not being able to be driven easily off-road is trying to incentivize you to build roads. Much like in real life, you shouldn't drive a car up a mountain. Similarly, it's not "meta commentary" to remark that the world is purposefully lonely. That's part of the game in-universe, not even meta-textual.
in my fucked up brain i justified 99 % of the characters in this game being and acting autistic as a consequence of them living in bunkers and shit and reconnecting them with each other is like a from software fan touching grass for the first time in years that's why i didn't mind the japanese woman speaking in gibberish bit .
To say the writing of the game is not good is one thing. I can understand that. But to play 90 hours of this and then say the story is hard to grasp is pretty wild to me. This may be imo the simplest story Kojima’s ever told, and almost everything is answered by the end. I think this happens if u dont pay attention to the emails and “interviews” Sam receives and unlocks throughout the game. Though the finale loooong cutscene at the end I feel like also just makes everything clear, but I guess the issue could be that if you dont read the stuff in the game, the game’s story will definitely feel like unsolved puzzle pieces until the end. The main point of the game’s storytelling I think relies on if the player was able to have emotional connection with BB and Clifford. Because if the player does, goddamn the ending moments and reveals of the game will hit soooooo hard. I dont think i’ve ever ugly cried like that regarding a video game story
15:00 It would be an awesome sign of progression if as you reconnect the infrastructure you get to see more people. Imagine starting with a few people you interact with and after lets say 60% of the game you now know 20-30 new characters. They do not all have to be flashed out, its ok for some of them to be in smaller groups but it would show people clustering together and forming the seeds for the new civilisation. This would be a nice contrast to the main character who is afraid of being touched and as the conclusion of the game gets near, the main guy feels the grip of his phobia getting stronger, or even getting easier depending on the message you want to send...
I think, the creator doesn’t watch a lot of Japanese media beyond the highlights.. being emotionally disconnected during high intensity. The general complaints seem to be more culture shock.
I been very sick of AAA run of the mill games. I have ventured into indies and found the passion I was looking for again from devs. I have also been thinking of death stranding since it was so different from every other game
Gaming is very much behind the times in 2022, we should have had much better games by now. And we should've moved away from stuff like health bars a hell of a long time ago. Devs are a fairly unimaginative bunch, studios need actual dedicated game designers, and not coders/programmers who also do game design because it's more cost efficient.
I loved this game.. your review was one of the few i have disagreed with your "take" on a game.. to each his own tho.. I won't ever get angry about someones opinion.. i think for me the game came along at the right time. I wanted a chill game i could take a few hits off the vape pen and just chill on.. the music/the beautiful areas of the world.. it was all just so cool to me at that time but i could see being in a diff mood and not liking it as much
Preach brother! I absolutely adore Cyberpunk 2077. I love the world, I love the story, I love the upgrade system and I love the gameplay. I can say confidently say it's one of my top 3 favourite games of the past 10 years. But I'm not silly enough to claim it's one of the BEST games of the past 10 years.
Death Stranding is it’s own thing and I respect that. I didn’t 100% it but I finished the story and I can safely say I would play it again. It’s very calming and beautiful and slowly becoming one of my favourites.
I think the filmmaker equivalent of Kojima is David Lynch. I may not necessarily ever feel like I'm totally aware of exactly what is happening in their stories but I very much enjoy the way that they tell them. Beyond that, I think Kojima has some of the best visual storytelling in any game through his cinematics...they are very well directed. I also enjoy the way he manipulates and subverts some industry tropes and expectations in really memorable ways.
When I played the campaign, I had the online component turned off. I was completely on my own. It was a difficult game, but the challenge felt somewhat rewarding once I got through it. Then after the campaign I enabled online and was shocked about how easy was to travel and avoid the BTs. There was so much stuff littered across the whole map by online players to help out. I think using online help with the campaign would have made it much too easy, and less enjoyable. Also many online players leave some of the the most useless things placed in the most stupidest places.
Yeah... I kinda lost the sense of accomplishment once an area was linked up. But since the game didn't award me for playing alone, I didn't bother doing it.
@@Hydra360cithe core point was to bolster one of the game's themes that things don't have to be difficult and can be made easier when we work together. Everyone has their own standard for accomplishment, I suppose . Also I'll note that if you're playing while online throughout the whole thing, you're more likely going to be contributing to building new structures rather than just being given a bunch.
@@effortlessfury I think it's quite the opposite. If you disable sharing (but not completely log off), you're gonna have to build it all yourself, so you'll build a several times more than if you had online sharing, and your structures will still show up in other people's games, especially after you make strand contracts and connect in the seam. If you completely log off that's not true, but there's no point either. Disabling sharing is more than enough to balance the difficulty.
@@renato360a I don't quite understand how any of what you said relates to what I said. My point is that A. Sharing (both giving and receiving) and how it makes life easier for all of us is a major theme of the game and B. Several structures in the game require a lot of resources, that end up being built via contributions from multiple players.
It's true this game it is not for everyone, and it's funny a lot of people has connected with it in someway after going through something tough... For me, I lost my job, a ton of money, my studies stopped, my 12yo dog died and my gf stopped our relationship - all of that and in November-December. I was pretty burned out, i could even think, eat, sleep and all. Some ad about PS4 games popped out in facebook and I saw Death Stranding with a 20% off discount so I bought it. Holy Cow, man... The story, the music, the feelings, the slow start, the weirdness of everything... I was amazed. I cried a few time while playing it and it showed my several points of view about life that I felt related to. After I finished the game I felt kinda empty, some weird feeling was in my telling me I couldn't be like that, drowning in sadness. So here I am, still healing after all that stuff, still listening to DS OST, remembering quotes and keep going forward. I dunno, games changing your life like that are rare and DS came at the right time for me.
I just started my 3rd playthrough of DT and I'm still just in awe as I was the first time I played it. Death Stranding isn't a video game, it's an experience.
The fact I know criticism can affect the future is the reason why I despise the abomination that are unnecessary/unfounded/unfair criticism. They can and will affect the developers/publisher choices on the future
I love Death Stranding. Love the atmosphere, love that I dont understand everyting about it right away, and love the satisfaction of delivering those damn pizzas!
I think Kojima's writing process is just thinking of cool moments and then stringing a plot between them. Certainly seemed that way with Phantom Pain at least
Check out the deleted stuff for Phantom Pain and it makes way more sense. It was originally a 3 act story about vengeance and what it does to ourselves (act 1: Snake vs Skull Face), the people around us (act 2: the clearly unfinished mother base infection plot) and the legacy it leaves for the next generation (act 3: the completely cut segment when young Naked Snake and Mantis make off with the Metal Gear and Snake goes to get it back). There are explanations of it online with imagery included in The Art of MGSV. It would have been an epic finale instead of just this odd mostly Act 1 story of Snake vs a jealous angry Skull Face.
I think the most grating part was how long the game is, and it doesn't feel like it needs to be that long. There's so many side deliveries you can do that unlocks useful equipment that didn't need to be locked away for dozens of hours.
‘I can’t play this $60 game without buying it again because I bought a digital version of the console instead of the physical media version”. This was always the end game for digital only consoles. Long live physical media
I absolutely love this game. A lot of the story and typical Kojima stuff was lost on me a lot of the time and I would zone out in the cut scenes. But the gameplay always hooked me. Man, I'm gonna reinstall it again soon.
I have a love hate relationship with this game. I love how unique it is and the risks they took with the gameplay and story. Even though it's not for me I still give it props for standing out and being different from other games.
Lol the whole concept of the story of Death Stranding I absolutely feel inlove with. I finished it and managed to understand why everything happens the way it is. And I actually believe its the game’s STRONGEST suit. I think it was the pacing that might be the tough pill to swallow. But believe me I have NEVER been so captivated by a story that purely involves walking as its main loop. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I bought it day one, put it down after about a week. Didn't beat it. Just picked it up again today (oct 2022) and I'm SUPER into it. Idk why I decided to give it a second chance, but I'm so glad I did. It's so much deeper than I initially thought
I love Death Stranding, consider it one my all-time favorite game ever and have spent over 250 hours on it but it has very obvious shortcomings and flaws.
11:41 this made me think of jojos and how araki names all his characters after musical references, and now I'm thinking how much I would LOVE a game designed and directed by Kojima but the story being written by Araki.
When this game came out and of course reception was split. Many loved it and many hated it. Classic Kojima outcome. I really liked it. I did see people asking "It's just a walking, delivery simulator. How on Earth could anyone love this game?!". At the time I had no idea how I personally could answer that question but now if I think about it, there isn't really an answer. The only thing I could possibly say is the reason people loved THIS game is likely for the same reason people who play Euro Truck Simulator 2 loved THAT game. Or ANY sim game for that matter. You wouldn't suspect there would be a market for such a game but there is. If you know you just know.
I would love for you to check out Snowrunner. If you find this delivery journey experience fun and relaxing/rewarding... That game's whole terrain and map is alive, in that the mud, snow and water as all physics based. How all the different trucks have there respective purpose etc. I actually didn't expect you to cover Kingdom Come Deliverance, and I really enjoyed that game. Was great to see you cover lesser known games 👍🏻
I know it's a small detail but on the Director's Cut, they fully use the ps5's controller new features (better and localized vibration, adaptive trigger, etc) and it also works on pc
dude you have no idea about acting if you think that scene you made fun of is bad acting.. it is just an emotional girl in misery who is trying to find hope and I haven't even played the game,it is not bad acting it is realistic, you took acting classes and in exchange it took away your empathy?
I find it amazing that you're revisiting this game once again and still cant figure out the story. It is a little confusing while you're playing, but by the end I makes perfect sense if you pay attention and buy into the reality of the game. It's really not that hard. I feel like you're overcomplicating it or you're so pre-occupied with trying to rationalize everything in real world terms. It's like, the few not super large maps are supposed to represent going from the east coast to the west coast of America. Obviously the country is not that small and far more geologically diverse, but its just representative of this physical space and distance, not a literal on-to-one scale representation. Some people just don't have the imagination to comprehend this story I guess.
The scene with the Japanese chiral artist is actually one of my favorites 😭 I understood who and what she was referencing and idk I feel like it makes sense that a lot of the characters are quirky and socially awkward because they are so isolated in this world. The music that played behind this scene also captivated me. Idk man, the acting in this game overall was spectacular. I think your opinions are leaning more into the subjective realm
Here because DS2 has been announced - I played 25 hours on PC and never finished it, I've been playing it on PS5 this weekend, sunk around 10 hours in, and I'm enjoying it. Always a fan of seeing Kojimas visions and game design. Also, bloody hell this game is gorgeous.
Just playing Death Standing (directors cut) for the first time. To be honest, I don’t remember hearing much about it and it was free to download. I love it, and I think it’s weird that I love it cause you’re just delivering packages lol. That cut scene with the chick though OMG it bothered me so much. Wish I had played it when it first came out though because I’m building a lot of roads seemingly on my own and that’s probably because not many others are actively playing
@@thebadwolf3088 It actually has a lot of replay value... if you skip all the cutscenes. The actual gameplay is surprisingly addictive, at least to some people (myself included).
I also couldn’t shake the feeling that these voice actors have no idea what was going on. So they didn’t know how to properly deliver the lines resulting in awkward dialogue.
The problem with your first video is that some of your “constructive” criticism was really bad. So disagreeing with it is being a “sick-a-fan”? Maybe some of your points wasn’t 100% spot on? Like claiming that the map of the game was procedurally generated
One of my favorite modern games, i'm on my 4th or 5th play through, my only hype with it is that there isn't a way to skip through the games lengthy tutorial for those playing it a 2nd to 5th time i mean you can skip cutscenes and tutorial speechs but i wish we had an option to skip the first 3-4 hours of gameplay with a brief clip of events leading up to traveling with fragile to the main regions that would be helpful for those who just want to dive into the game
I enjoyed this game for what it was and how different it tried to be. That being said, I really hope they don’t make a sequel to it. I really want to see Kojima go back to a more linear format, or something that feels vastly different from Death Stranding and MGSV
@@Hydra360ci yeah I had heard but I’m still in denial and hoping it becomes something else lol. Or at the very least I hope they drastically change the gameplay maybe create something more linear. I will probably be disappointed though
@@Sandstorm3313 - Sorry, but you're in the minority on this one, cuz most of the fanbase for the game, really WANTS a sequel. We want more adventures with Sam & Louise! 👊🏼😉🍼 Kojima is working on another game at the same time, and it's supposed to be a horror game I think. They are a full on development studio now, and can work on different projects at once, so we will see other stuff from him eventually...
I love the Carson Clay reference, that’s exactly how Death Stranding feels. There’s an element of pretention that’s unavoidable. Still love the game though.
Although the game has its merits eg cinematography, acting etc I think it’s overshadowed by its uneven script and gameplay. It’s a solid game but not outstanding
@@patrykzukowski7471 i thought the same untill I started to experiment!...take the maximum cargo you can with you and limit the items you carry that makes the game easy then set as many destinations as you can with the specific cargo you have!...every step is your heart beat!
@@madalindragan9569 I do that all the time. The game demands very little of you in terms of tools anyway. It's extremely easy, to the point that I almost don't have to use ladders and ropes.
Probably one of my top games of all time. So much hate was geared towards this game in the beginning but overtime I think a lot of ppl gravitated towards it and theres a very solid community of people now who understand Kojimas vision for this game and love how unique it is, especially in todays gaming market. Ever since the first trailer was released I was hooked on how dark and mysterious it was. And when I finally got to play I was astonished at the detail and story and acting, it was incredible. Yes it can be very tedious delivering tons of products to different parts of the very large and rocky map, and yes at times it can be a bit clunky. But its so calming and graphically incredible. I can't explain it but Hideo is a genius when it comes to creating moments that you'll remember forever. He takes his time to truly create unique works of art and experiences unlike any other. Can't wait for Death Stranding 2!
Death Stranding was one of my favorite stories and games I've ever played. I totally think it depends on personality and even level of maturity. Was a beautiful experience that I feel privileged to have been able to play
Her acting isn’t “bad” they did it for inclusion, because like you know there are people who speak like that in the world and they also play video games and sometimes they like to see “themselves” in said video games
I just find Luke's "critics" too often boil down to "I dont get the game." Such as the humans in the world all appearing as holograms. It meant to enforce the isolation in the world, that few people ever meet face to face anymore. But Luke thinks its just the devs being lazy so they dont have to render fully animated people. *rolls eyes. Another example, the trucks being sluggish to drive. This is how it should be, the trucks are hard to use off road. It incentives building the highway system. Even then you might still use other transport methods given the clunkyness of trucks. If trucks were smooth to drive theres no reason to use any other transport method in the game. Or complaining so much of the story is incomprehensible when the games ending goes out of its way to explain everything. Now, theres too much info dumping which is a legit critic because its just hard for players to remember everything thats been explained. But part of the joy of DS has been the online community and their discussions on the lore of the game and piecing everything together. A lot of the fans enjoy seeing how everything that maded little sense at the start be explained and make sense at the end. Its impressive feat to see what seems like, at first glance, to be a pile of nonsense reveal itself to be a coherent and well thought out story.
Everything was really amazing but i just wanted 1 thing Better Vehicles with Offroad Suspensions. This game could ve been a great offroader as well. Imagine a 4x4 , 6x6 or 8x8 with full flexible suspensions , riding around the rocks , it would ve been so satisfying just like how walking feels. I wish they paid more attention to driving
The one thing I wanted was a NG+ mode, and I assumed we'd get that along with whatever else in the Director's Cut. Instead we got a bunch of nonsense. smh.
Totally agree with you... but keep in mind that the other side of that coin is that we can enjoy your videos while also disagreeing with your critical opinions.
a quick recommendation. if you like the delivery guy gameplay loop but want a more realistic or pure experience with complex physics, particularly with trucks. try snowrunner. its pure extreme offroading truck delivery game with no story or anything. a relaxing time with some serious challenge from the terrain and physics. and it has enough content for hundreds of hours if you get the dlc
All these UA-camrs making a living critiquing games act like they’re helping video game development for the future but I’m glad people like Kojima and Hidetaka Miyazaki don’t listen to critique and make what they want. That’s what’s beautiful about art. No one wants cookie cutter Ubisoft games that try to bend the knee the current critical norms
While I agree on almost everything Luke says here, I really don't get the confusion about the story. DS's story is actually very straight forward, more so than the Metal gear series. Yes, really. My first playthrough of this game I wasn't even paying attention that much on the story since it's a Kojima game and I came in expecting to NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND, at least for a sequel or two. But nope, even though admittedly the story pacing was somehow drawn-out or slow, just reading on mails, doing all deliveries, I kinda got the gist of the story immediately as it was unfolding. I don't know if it's the modern gamer's mindset of instand gratification, Luke feining confusion, or he just plainly do not want to understand the story. It's like you play a Kojima game expecting something different from the guy that brought you some of the most confusing, convoluted stories in gaming and then expecting it to be different somehow.
I made a similar comment But I think this happens when you dont read the emails and interviews I guess in that sense I can see why someone might be confused with the story
I like how the story is written, having a storyline that causes reflection and the need to remember about previous scenes is good and interesting. This game makes you stuck to the storyline because of the many questions that are always appearing, in the end everything is crystal clear, you really have everything explained in the cutscenes or in the text documents in Sam's room.
6:40 that’s how I felt about this game. The thick but calm atmosphere was relaxing. If the game didn’t have such ridiculously long cutscenes I’d probably play it more as one of those game to just boot up and chill after a super busy work day.
I think what you're not fully getting with that cutscene is that in the story, I think in one of the emails from her mother or maybe her husband, it's mentioned that she didn't speak English at all until her mother taught her. So English isn't her first language and she's not great at it intentionally. She's translating her words in her head as she's speaking them which is why her speech feels so stilted. Idk if you've ever met someone who's learning English as a second language but their speech is very similar. So I saw it less like "Oh, she sounds that way because the VA is reading from a script." and instead saw it as, "Oh, she's trying hard to translate what she's thinking into a language that is still fairly new for her."
I was super disappointed when this game came out. It didn't meet any of my expectations between the cryptic marketing and previous experiences with Kojima titles. I finished the story twice to get my money's worth and didn't touch it for 4 years. Fast forward to 2024, I've purchased the game again for PC and I'm having a wonderful time.
This game as to be played alone, preferably at night with a nice light setup and silence. No Talking, No Voice, and you could hear everything append in the World, noise of BT's, Noise of Terrorist, its a game that has to be enjoy quietly to really get the juice of it.
The environment is the most impressive part of this game. It looks real, like a photograph of actual landscape in Iceland.
( With some exceptions.)
Anyway those enemies are pointless to fight so you avoid them.
And there is actually not much to them.... aside from some missions that force you to go into their areas they are not an important part of the game.

If KOJIMA is such a GENIUS then why did he not think to add this to the game??? So many things could be added for the main character to do to make it more interesting...instead it's wasted opportunity.
Games like S.C.U.M or Days Gone are way more interesting to play than death stranding.

It honestly made my bad mental health from not being able to explore nature so much better. I really hope kojima makes a second death stranding game although the first one was so damn good that I'm not sure what they would actually be able to improve apart from graphics.

You go through hell & back to get to Port Knot City, but then you finally make it through, and the rain stops, and the sun comes out & starts shining again, and the scenery & music... my god I don't think I've ever been so in awe.
The design and pacing in this game is in a class of its own.

i love Death Stranding so much. The atmosphere of this game is something you don't see often in video games.
The atmosphere was weirdly calming during covid lockdown when I first played this game. I loved the cloudy landscapes of the world
Exactly I first played on launch 2019 I was hooked from the get go and I found delivering packages addicting cause I was tryna get 5 stars at every location and I did just that!

I think Kojima is similar to George Lucas when it comes to his writing. He has some great ideas but his writing usually has some very noticeable flaws especially when it comes to characters and dialogue.

The story is coherent, its just actually super complicated, maybe over complicated. And its delivered in the weirdest way, but it all makes sense from A to Z
Too complicated, but it kind of makes up for it. Clifford's story is worthy of a movie on it's own
I agree that the story is surprisingly coherent, but it's delivered so poorly that most people will come away with the same attitude that Luke has here. I don't blame him one bit for reacting the way he does to the story.

Games like S.C.U.M or Days Gone are way more interesting to play than death stranding.
i love when someone tells me there will be a link in the description and then there is links to everything but what they said in the description, really shows you care. also you can think something is bad and be wrong just like other can defend things that are bad, your not enjoying something doesn't make it objectively bad just like someone enjoying something doesn't make it objectively good. but coming into a fandom and trashing it wile saying anyone who disagrees is a sycophant isn't a good argument either, it is possible you don't get things or they aren't for you and that's ok you don't need to like everything.
All I’m saying is to try and look at it in a different way, cause it read like you were saying he’s just hating on the game, and saying the people he was complaining about were just giving him levelheaded criticisms to his takes, but in reality they were being unreasonable dicks, like many who exist on the internet. Also idk if your calling me a troll, or just referring to my original comment but yea, I agree don’t feed into em.
@@valeriebasta7983 considering i never said he hated the game yea i think either your a troll or we are talking past each other doesn't really matter. people are allowed to be assholes welcome to the internet lol. anyway i'm not sure we disagree even cause it's not like i don't see his point i just didn't agree pretty simple lol
It is. I’m halfway through and it’s my favorite delivery so far. The mail they send afterword have me rooting for them too.
Yea I think he missed that even after replaying it multiple times. The delivery was good and you the subject she’s talking about is something you should 100% know about if you’ve been paying attention while playing instead of dazing off during cutscenes or dialogue. I mean she was brought up a few times before you even get to this part.
Man.. the strong suit of this game is it's story. It is all 100% explained by the end and it all actually makes sense.
Yeah it was nice to have your questions answered by the end. Was scared it was gonna be like metal gear and have the most confusing story of all time.
Bro literally played the game 3 times he said and still doesn’t even understand the basic plot of the game lmao
@@Ligmaballin aw i like deadman and heartman
Yeah, gaming needs more creative titles like this havent played yet but i appreciate him trying something totally new
It’s really sad that a lot of gamers trash this game because it’s not a dopamine rush to their brains.
Mid
I don't know why but to me rebuilding the highway in this game is like crack cocaïne, it's all I want to do, it is my main goal before anything else, I just love it for some reason
Same! As soon as I did the first part I thought “Huh thats cool”, and then another player built the next part and my part got a bunch of ‘likes’, and I realised we’re all working together. I literally stopped everything else and focused on the highway, for like 20 hours lol.
@@firstnamelastname4752 lmao I can't wait to do the same in death stranding 2
The game is very addictive and calm.
@@DjDolHaus86 ……k?
I think the series walking dead has the same geographic scaling....
Yup I agree... idk there could have been so much more content and a bigger map I would have LOVED.
One of the most underrated gems of our lifetime. A true masterpiece of a game.
I honestly don't this this dude has ever watched any sort of media. Story progression and revealing more parts of a story is a way to keep the audience interested. This game has fantastic story telling, a task that should be boring that has been made fun and interesting, and a great acting.
It’s just his opinion, don’t be so serious.
Make your own video about how you disagree. I'm not being facetious, give your points
I play this game when I wanna feel like I'm delivering Amazon packages, except I don't get in trouble for taking a potty break in between deliveries.
That scene wasn't bad at all... She's Japanese bro.
Yeah I loved playing Ryse Son of recently but would not call that one the best games ever.
Death Stranding is it’s own thing and I respect that.
I didn’t 100% it but I finished the story and I can safely say I would play it again. It’s very calming and beautiful and slowly becoming one of my favourites.
"sometimes a rope can just not be made of blood" is the summarising sentence for me
I think the filmmaker equivalent of Kojima is David Lynch.
I completed the directors cut last night, second play through and I loved it. Cannot wait for 2
When I played the campaign, I had the online component turned off.
The online structures only activate once you "clear" an area by connecting it to the network.
That moment when Kojima built his spin on Truck Simulator, but the crowd showed up for metal gear…
I think the most grating part was how long the game is, and it doesn't feel like it needs to be that long. There's so many side deliveries you can do that unlocks useful equipment that didn't need to be locked away for dozens of hours.
It's not that long. I finished it in 35 hours which is fairly standard.
They could have grounded the story a lot more
Lol the whole concept of the story of Death Stranding I absolutely feel inlove with.
This game had an incredible soundtrack
YES 😃🎧🎶
It's one of the best things about it.
The whole Mudrunner series is great. More of a puzzle game than a life sim
I agree
Thank god someone else said it. Sometimes Luke says very questionable things. Not sure what kind of acting classes he took…
what acting? It's motion capture with CGI layered over it. There is literally 0 "acting" at all. This game blows too btw
Death Stranding is the best game I've ever played that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Ever.

The problem with your first video is that some of your “constructive” criticism was really bad. So disagreeing with it is being a “sick-a-fan”? Maybe some of your points wasn’t 100% spot on? Like claiming that the map of the game was procedurally generated

I enjoyed this game for what it was and how different it tried to be. That being said, I really hope they don’t make a sequel to it. I really want to see Kojima go back to a more linear format, or something that feels vastly different from Death Stranding and MGSV

I just pissed in my cereal
Everything was really amazing but i just wanted 1 thing
Better Vehicles with Offroad Suspensions.
Literally just started watching a Cyberpunk video from you lol
👏slow👏clap👏
a quick recommendation. if you like the delivery guy gameplay loop but want a more realistic or pure experience with complex physics, particularly with trucks. try snowrunner. its pure extreme offroading truck delivery game with no story or anything. a relaxing time with some serious challenge from the terrain and physics. and it has enough content for hundreds of hours if you get the dlc
Death Stranding is a social commentary on how you don’t get it.
Lol
I made a similar comment
But I think this happens when you dont read the emails and interviews
I guess in that sense I can see why someone might be confused with the story
I like how the story is written, having a storyline that causes reflection and the need to remember about previous scenes is good and interesting. This game makes you stuck to the storyline because of the many questions that are always appearing, in the end everything is crystal clear, you really have everything explained in the cutscenes or in the text documents in Sam's room.
I know many people did not care for this game but I consider it an absolute masterpiece.
meh have you played the first 3 mgs? it's really hard to not get disappointed after coming from classics.
It's not a masterpiece. It's trash
