  • So many people think that marine biology is just research or science and since that isn't their thing, they give up on becoming a marine biologist. Don't give up! We need more marine focused people in the world! Instead, pair your best talent, skill, interest or trait with the ocean to come up with your ideal venn diagram.
This is part 1 of a 10-part series of how to become a marine biologist. Don't give up on your dreams kiddos (or adults, whoever you are!).

Hey! I am 24 years-old and I'm currently in the United States Navy. I always had the dream of becoming a marine biologist since I was a little girl. But I never really believed my dream could be possible until recently. So now I have decided that I am going to use the education benefits provided to me from my service, and when I get out, I am planning to major in biology to become a marine biologist. I hope that this isn't one of those fields where you have to start super young! I have a passion for the ocean, and her animals! I love everything from corals, to marine mammals, and the fish and invertebrates that live there! But I do have trouble pinpointing my passions! I love photography, animal training, discovery and research, as well as caring for animals! I have looked at multiple paths this could take me and the things that excite me the most are filmography, aquaristry, and researching to help save the corals that have been dying so quickly in our ecosystem!

Hey Rachel! Happy New Year! Awesome that you are going to take advantage of the schooling provided to you through the Navy. Great idea! Don't worry about pinpointing your specific interests too early. School will expose you to so much great information, new fields of research, ecosystems, threats and experts - you are guaranteed to find at least one thing that excites you the most. Also, the Navy has /is doing some really cutting edge science. I would explore the opportunities within the Navy to get some experience, maybe on a research vessel or supporting dive teams?! I don't really know that much about it but the Navy were some of the first deep-sea divers and ocean mappers. PS. I love corals too - especially their behaviours at night. Keep it up and keep me posted! All the very best to you on your journey!!

I am beyond grateful to you for making this series. I am an undergrad student who just made a major career shift from nursing to marine biology and have been researching as much as I can about the field and what you can/should do. As a kid I always loved the biology section of the books, it had animals, plants and and it was full of beautiful things. The first time I went to university I had to chose whatever major that would allow me to get a job and make money, and it worked. I am now 30 year old and I want to go back to school, now I want to study something I love, not for the job, not for the money, I just want to learn something that excites me as a human being, not as a worker or student. So I am now letting my 8 year old self pick what she wants to read and learn about and this is how I start my journey to study marine biology. Btw the Venn Diagram overlaped very nicely with my curent degree, so everything just became 100X more exciting! it won't be easy, but slowly, here I start.
Thank you so much for this! Thank you for educating us on this beautiful field. I am happy to have discovered your video.

I’m bit older… I’m 28 years and I have done already three studies and been teaching music and dancing for the last 5 years, but I feel like I need to learn new skills and switch from job. It really helped hearing that I could use my teaching skills within the marine and maybe even my creative side 🤗

My parents talked me out of it because they were controlling and didn’t want me to move out of the house. They also told me that if I moved out and went out of state to college that I was on my own and they weren’t gonna pay for anything. So I was terrified at 18 years old from a very small town with zero resources for college, except for our local community college. But now that I’m 36 it’s time.

This is the video I needed to see 6 years ago when I was in college for Marine Biology. I ended up leaving that major because I thought it meant being in a lab a lot, when all I wanted to do was literally dwell with the ocean. I am also born and raised in MO and everyone told me I would never find a job. (I wanted to work with cetaceans more than anything.) I think I just thought that the passion I for the ocean(since I was a landlocked 4 year old) would go away, its not like i'm near it or anything. Fast forward 7 years and I now am a 25 year old beginner wildlife photographer with hopes to someday capture my dream subject, you guessed it, the ocean. Turns out the passion only burns brighter. I feel like I have wasted time not living out my purpose, but am working my butt off to figure out a way to get me there that doesn't involve going back to university level debt. That is where I hope my passion for the ocean, conservation, and photography will come together! :)
To whoever feels called to the ocean in such a capacity to want to make it your career: shut out the voices, even your own, and go for it. That desire will not go away, and there are so many ways you can use that degree :)

Wow… I don’t think I could relate more to your passion. I’m a graduating senior in high school who also has always lived in a landlocked state, Colorado, but even though this state has a lot of beautiful nature in forests and in the mountains… I can’t help but also feel like the ocean is calling to me as well. Hopefully I can use my youth to my advantage and make the right choices to live out my dream just like you aim to do one day too!

Get to the coast whenever you can but don't wait for your geographic location to change before you start making waves. Start now. There is a lot that a landlocked dreamer can do to set themselves up for success as a marine biologist. Swim. Learn to dive. Read as much as you can. Focus on your studies. Work or volunteer at a nature centre or aquarium. Find an internship.... I should make a video about this exact topic! :) Keep at it. You got this.

Hi 👋 lompxi326, thanks for reaching out! Some marine research takes place underwater so knowing how to swim is an asset! But, no, you don’t need to know how to swim to become a marine biologist. Most ocean research is done from a boat, in a lab or using computer programming and tech.
If you can get swimming lessons, great - it will help you understand the ocean better because then you can go and experience it for yourself!
Breathe easy - you got this either way! The ocean needs you just as you are. Keep at it.
      I agree, seals 🦭 are awesome! 😎

I was the same - growing up in land locked Canada! If you travel to the ocean for a visit and a swim, do it! You can still make a big impact exactly where you are. Being a marine biologist is a way of being, just as much as it is a job title. Keep watching the 10 part series to learn more. Let me know if you have other questions!

Hello, sooo quick question. My 11 year old is and has been saying she wants to be a Marine biologist since she was 5 she is now 11, so I want to begin to help her build that dream since she has been consistent with it at such a young age. My question to you is how and where should I begin with her age group to get her started.

Hey again! Thanks for watching! I would take art classes and all the science courses. I would also grab your phone and/or a camera and start taking photos all the time. You can practice everyday, even if it isn't of ocean related images. Once you get to the ocean, you will have more skills and comfortable to start shooting. Also, you can learn to dive in any body of water. Being an ocean photographer will mean you are super comfortable diver/swimmer/snorkeler. Let me know if this is helpful or if you have other questions. Keep at it!

Hi 👋 Meleerocker, so glad you wrote! Thanks for watching. It depends on the school you are going to and what your goals are. I suggest talking to an academic advisor at college, or if you’re still in high school and planning to go to college, speak to a guidance counsellor or teacher you trust. Generally, you’ll need a lot of the main basic science classes, including chemistry, physics, biology. The more applied marine biology course will come in your second, third and fourth year classes, and those ones will be fun like marine ecology, ichthyology (study of fishes!), fisheries management, animal behaviour, botany (study of plants and algae). These are all the fun classes you get to choose from once you’re enrolled and on your way! Does this help? Keep me posted.

Hey Melanie I am 13, turning 14 this year and I want to become a marine biologist, but my two big interests are softball and hunting/ target practice with my 22 rifle. How could I combine those?

    • @MarineBiologyMel
      @MarineBiologyMel  5 років тому

Hi Leksi, thanks for reaching out! Great question - it's a bit of a stumper! My first thought is that maybe you could do a softball tournament or even a target practice challenge to raise money for your favourite ocean charity. But generally, I would say the skills you are learning in these endeavours can be applied to your future science career. Softball is great to learn about team dynamics. Marine biologists need to work in teams in order to solve complex issues so learning to be a good teammate, communicator and leader are huge lessons. With target practice, you are learning important lessons about precision, detail and accuracy. Biologists are often working with detailed data or tiny specimens. They are also having to do things repetitively to get many samples. Being thorough and patient are great skills if you want to do research. If you are dressing the animals you hunt, you are learning about anatomy! This would help if you were wanted to become a vet! Finally, both activities are done outdoors so that is key to exploring and being close to nature. I hope this helps, Leksi! Keep the dream alive. We need more curious and committed people like you to help the ocean! Keep me posted!

Shivanjali bhosale Hey! Yes, you will need math to advance in any science degree. If you find math difficult, keep at it. I found it required practice, focus and determination and then it wasn’t that bad. Luckily, these are all skills a marine biologist needs (as well as math) so it’s worth it.
