Agreed!! Do your research first my daughter just finished local college and transferred to Texas A&M Galveston where she switched from marine biologist to marine science which I taught is much better. More on the environmental side. She too like many loves the ocean but realistically my concern was what they make without research funding it can become a hard challenge. Besides the math & chemistry I was happy she switched but to his his own. You ha e to also love what you do.

Kate Sarah is that all collage level or does a passing grade in highschool count

    • @katiescollection6707
      @katiescollection6707 3 роки тому +5

@@haileyl4546 It's college-level, but first year courses are usually a recap of high school in my experience. For instance, I took regular grade 11/12 chem in high school and first year chem in university and I don't remember anything in first year chem (2 semesters) being new material to me. In order to get into marine bio programs, though, most programs require high school chemistry, biology, and precalc at a bare minimum. If you're planning on a more oceanography track rather than marine bio, physics is good to have if you can.
Marine bio programs tend to have the first two years as a general biology degree, then the actual marine bio courses start in third year. I'm a third-year oceanography major with a marine bio minor and my first year was intro biology, chemistry, calculus (marine bio usually only needs 1 calculus class but oceanog requires the full year of differential and integral calc), and intro stats, which was just one class. My second year was intro oceanography, which is required for marine bio majors at my school, and all the core bio classes (genetics/molecular bio, cell, ecology, evolution, animal bio, and microbiology/plant bio). The marine biology program where I am is super flexible and oceanography is not at all, so I've basically just been picking my marine bio courses for my minor around my required oceanography classes.
If you took IB/AP courses in high school, you might be able to transfer credits. Hope this helped, and feel free to ask me any other questions!

I'm an oceanography major with a minor in marine bio. Oceanography/marine science is split into four areas: physical, chemical, geological, and biological. There's a lot of overlap between the areas (like biogeochem cycles) and marine bio would fall under biological oceanography. Marine bio is more specialized, but marine/ocean science will give you a better understanding of how the ocean works as a whole and how the different areas interact.
Also, it probably depends on your school and program, but marine bio requirements in Canada (generally) are basic calculus, stats and intro chem, but oceanography requires those and physics, so it's more intensive on the math side of things. If you took chem in high school you should be fine, and the stats requirement is usually just one intro stats class, which most people don't find difficult. It's definitely a dry subject, but it's really useful to have. If you're worried about the math and chem requirements, it's mostly just a rehash of high school, so don't let it put you off if you really want to go into marine bio! Most of the gen ed classes are done by the end of first year and tbh the only classes that have actually used my math and chem courses have been my oceanography ones.

@@k8eb4d Look at different programs! I'm in Canada and the requirements for marine bio are first year chem (basically a review of high school), one stats class, and usually just differential calc. None of my marine bio courses have really used any of those classes except stats, but my upper-year oceanography classes have. If you go to a larger school the math and chem departments usually have a ton of resources to help first years because they know it can be a struggle.

    *marine biology vs marine science:*
Marine biology is included in marine science. While marine biology really focuses on the living organisms within the ocean, marine science also includes a lot of chemistry, geography, physics, maths, mechanics etc. So if you want a broad education about the ocean, marine *science* it is. But if you want to focus on the animals and organisms especially, you should choose marine *biology.*
However with a major/phd in marine science you are still a marine biologist :)
At least this is how I understand it.

Hi, my bachelor was in Marine Science and I did Masters in Oceanography from the same institute. And now doing my second masters in Marine Biology in Ocean University of China. Your concept and the comments about the differences between Marine Science and Marine Biology are ok, but I would like to add one more topic. Marine Science also deals with the coastal management as I had a course in my undergrad as "Integrated Coastal Zone Management" which involves the livelihood of the coastal people and effect of sea level rising on their life etc.
    #Marine chemistry facts
Come on....Marine chemistry is not so hard like pure chemistry. You will just do a course to gather basic knowledge to improve your understanding. And also has many interesting research topics excluding the use of hard chemistry.

Marine science includes oceanography and marine ecology as well as marine bio. So we do more like ecology geology stuff than marine bio majors but we have our fair share of bio too :) at most school marine science majors have more chem too bleh

College of Marin (a community college in California) had an amazing Marine Biology program. I don't know if it is still ongoing,, but fifty years ago it was amazing. They had courses out at Bolinas with an old Coastguard station where the students would bring sleeping bags and sleep on the floor. The college owned a small ship for trawling on Tomales Bay, that Mr. Molina would use to take students for a week in the summer down to Baja California and the Sea of Cortez.

I have no clue what i wanted to do. I wanted to do marine biology but math is not my subject i even failed algebra 1.... I recently have started to take school more serious especially with math. On the other hand I have always been super good with science with 90s and aboves. The major is gorgeous to me to be able to interact and study with them sounds amazing but I don’t want to go to the college and than realize it might not be right for me

Okay, I know I sound complicated but I have a question. I have a BIG passion for marine mammals and also just the ocean in general. I'm not that interested in the biology part of it though... are there any jobs that you know about where I could work with marine mammals but not specifically study biology? I've thought of becoming a marine mammal trainer or even an aquatic veterinarian but I really don't know.

It seems like a tough major. I'd be willing to buckle down and try it, except I'm afraid I'd need to keep going and get a Masters for it to be worth it.

I'm only in 8th grade and I have my mind set on being a marine biologist. I've already signed up for a marine science program in high school for early college and I want to go to uncw because I've heard they have a very good marine biology course. I also really wanna volunteer at my local aquarium(I gotta be a freshman to do that tho) so less than a year for that👍

I chose this course because I'm constantly changing my mind, I just know I want to work with animals, bugs, or sealife. So where the course I'm studying is so diverse I thought it was a great fit.

Could you do a video maybe about your Internship at the Aquarium of the Pacific and what you did there? Currently i’m in high school and i’m looking to become an Aquatic vet tech. I haven’t been super successful in finding people who have this job but i have been able to do some research. I have found though that getting into that field it would be good to uphold a marine bio degree or something similar, would you maybe know anything about this?
