@@MarineBiologyMel currently trying to figure out how to get an associates in marine or wildlife biology while living in Thailand but getting a degree from the states. It is a challenging step as most schools do not give associates in this field online. :( I will continue to find a way though as I am in the perfect country for this field!
Thank you for this video! It's been a long standing dream of mine to study marine mammals. I am landlocked, but I do live within walking distance of a pool and my parents always say I need to be a strong swimmer for my line of work. What kinds of swimming skills should I work on specifically? Should I swim with flippers like marine biologists do? Should I become CPR and/or lifeguard certified?
Sorry for my delay Nature Bird! Yes, swimming is a great skill to keep developing. I was a competitive swimmer and a life guard in high school and into university. These are great skills so you are comfy in the water. Swimming with fins is easy once you are super comfy in the water. I would start without fins. Scuba diving and free diving are also good things to get into if you are comfortable! Good luck! Keep at it!
I am coincidentally in the same position you were in! I’m in Ontario and planning to go to The Memorial University of Newfoundland. I’m in Grade 12 and taking a Grade 13 to get a few more credits. But I’m not quite too sure if I need to take both Calculus and Advanced Functions. Do you know what courses are the mandatory ones?
I have another question what course did you get in college? And how many students? Help me please I'm still hesitating😭but I want to become a marine biology
I got a marine biology degree from university. My first year classes were very large, but by year 4, they were close to 30 people in each. It is ok to keep exploring this option in parallel to other goals or studies you might be interested in. Have you seen my How to become a marine biologist 10 part series?
@@MarineBiologyMel No problem!!! I am 13 and didn't really know where to look so I just searched "tips if you want to be a marine biologist" and you were the first person that popped up. ❤
I have a question maam. Is it fun to become a marine biology? I want to become marine biology because I love Ocean but I'm still hesitating, because what if the salary is low in our country? And marine biologist is a rare job. And are you always in the field? And are you always away in your family?
Hi Arise! YES! it is fun and rewarding to become a marine biologist. Different jobs have different salaries so that is hard to answer but, generally the starting wage can be low but will grow with experience. Marine biologists WISH they were always in the field, but no, they are not always away from their families. There are so many ways to support the oceans - what interests you most about the ocean?
@@arise6164 It depends. When I was working at the Vancouver Aquarium, I would dive in the tanks 5 times a week. When I was collecting with the mini aquarium, I would dive 10 times over the course of a month, then not again for several months. Hi Jennifer, you are in a GREAT position to achieve your dream! Good for you for taking all those hard courses. You may be required to take prep bio before getting into uni/college or a catch up course in 1st year. But you will be fine! You got this!! Go after your dreams!
how can i start volunteering and getting things to put on my resume if I don't live near a ocean and there is no groups to help clean the lake I like by
Hey 🌊 chris! Maybe start our own group to clean the lake! Get a fish tank and join some fish hobbiest meetups. Reach out to any environmental non-profit in your community and offer to help. Look into lake, stream, river ecology programs around you- is all great experience too! Hold a fundraiser and give the money to a local environmental charity. Give your birthday money to a charity of your choice. What other ideas do you have? You got this! Keep at it
I've got a question I live in England and you can pick between triple science and combined science in gcse so would I still be able to do it without separate science grades?
Hi Yeh, Thanks for writing and watching! I’m not familiar with the England school system but that is a great question for your guidance counsellor or a teacher you trust. Ask a lot of questions and let them help you navigate how to best prepare for your undergraduate schooling. You got this!! Keep it up!
Hi! I have a question. I've been interested in marine biology for some time and I think it's my dream job! Unfortunately, I live in Poland, and I know that if I wanted to achieve something more, I would have to move out. I'm 13 now and I'm thinking about choosing a high school. The profile with the extension of biology and chemistry is supposedly very difficult, so I'm wondering if you think it's worth it?
sorry, I forgot to mention that high schools in Poland have profiles in which you have to choose 2 subjects to be extended, or go to a general "profile"
Hi Rubi, Thanks for reaching out. This is a big question! I would suggest you first talk to your parents so someone who you know and trust to seek their advice and support. I definitely encourage you to follow what you feel is right, even if it is hard. You can do hard things and you can always change your mind. If you go into bio and chem now and you find you don’t like it, you can always stitch. From my experience, it can be harder to go the other way, from a general stream to a more specific stream. The benefits of going into science are immense! It will open a lot of doors and makes you a stronger thinker and problem solver - I think! I don’t know what it would be like to have to make such a big decision about my future at the age of 13. That must be hard! The saying goes, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” Norman Vincent Peale Best of luck to you, Rubi! Keep me posted. Cheering you on.
Hi Anna, yes! you totally can purse marine bio without being a diver. Hey - I get sea sick and am not the best on boats! You can absolutely find a good fit for yourself in the field. Are you open to learning to dive? It is really fun if you are able and willing!
