    I feel so lucky that when I'm struggling for a practical way to work up to my dream, I come across your video. I didn't know there was an oceanographer job, too! Not until recently when I started to gain interest in marine field and did some research and happened to know it.
    I subscribed your channel and followed you on Instagram right after Part 1. Thank you for useful advice!

    School failed me,, see,, im in Canada and was stuck in a very abusive class for troubled kid,, somewhere i was not destined to be because im just really emotive,, (actually in the autism spectrum),, and im really really obsessed on Nudibranch but i also know a lot about the different Echinoderm and Cnidaria and other Gastropod,, i even know some about Arthropod (hate spiders and yes i know about the Pycnogonida but i like them)
    but i really dont know how to go back in school,,, its really draining for me and stressful,, and everytime i tried to go back they were kinda,,, not really accepting of my multiple problems,, plus the fact that i finished my primary school and thats all (21 years old),,, actually everything i learned was from TV and internet research,,, School really failed me,,, i live in Lanaudiere and the closest place where i could really learn Marine Biology is in Montreal or Quebec,, i cant live all by myself,,, i cant even cook and its impossible to get an appartement in big city ! i feel really stuck,,, i took so much time finding what i wanted to do and end up not knowing where to go,,, or how to go

    Thank you very much for these videos. I love the ocean and I want to study marine biology and work in the field so bad, but unfortunately I didn't know that until half way through my bachelor's in art. I've graduated in art since then, but I don't know where to go from here.
    I have a full time office assistant job and my grades were just average in college, but this is something I REALLY want to do. Nothing has excited as much as learning about the ocean. It's just like instant fulfillment. It's kind of embarrassing how happy it makes me, and it feels so right for me.
    But I don't know what to do in a situation where my bachelor's is completely unrelated to what I want to do. Do you know anyone that found out they wanted to be a marine biologist post education? Or do you have any advice in that situation? Thank you

      Hi Kaylee, Thanks for being so open and for your passion for the ocean - it's infectious! I know lots of people who are active in the field of marine biology without a MB degree. What got you interested in the arts? Can that passion be combined with your passion for the oceans? What came up for you when you did the venn diagram (two overlapping circles) exercise? Also think about the intangible skills you learned from your arts degree (communications, creative problem solving, design, etc) and think about applying those skills to the oceans. Oceans organizations need more then scientists, they need people to be able to get the message out, fundraise, attract media, make presentations, coordinate projects. There are so many ways you can apply your degree to ocean conservation! Get creative! Let me know what ideas you come up with! Here to help.

      Hey Kaylee, checking in! It’s been a while. I was just re-reading your comment and wondered how you are doing. Hope all is well with you and have found some clarity in your path.

    What about Marine Biologist documentary film makers or interview style like a documentary? History & Education?

    I always had an interest in the aquatic life and the ecoystem of those living in the ocean and i keep mutiple fishtank in very natural environments that mimic thier real ecosytems and i feel like I should have studied marine biology, and now Im in the last year of getting my Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and even work in an Electrical Engineering Company and am feeling an immense sense of dread but i appreciate your videos and they give me hope that I can maybe pursue my real passion someday

      @MarineBiologyMel  Рік тому

      Hey @litluna! You are so accomplished! In your last year of electrical engineering? You are doing great, no need for feeling dread! Did you know that electrical engineers are needed all over the marine industry? You are so valuable to places like aquariums, for drone operations, as a boat mechanic, submarine pilots, remote operated vehicles (ROV), all of these plus more! We need talented electrical engineers like you to help with ocean exploration, do research and science, go to places we have never been before. You got this. Keep it up! Keep me posted if you need more encouragement. :)

      @@MarineBiologyMelhey mel, I’m actually in quite a similar boat doing electrical and computer engineering (junior, sorta, still have two years left) and doing internships in aerospace and defense, but I really want to work in marine sciences. You mention some great jobs; do you know where to find jobs on, for example, AUVs, ROVs, technician, etc? I’m interested in remote sensing as well, any intersections where I can apply computer science to marine biology really. Do you think it would be worth going to grad school for marine biology after an ECE undergrad (assuming I take a few biology classes in college + general chemistry)? How would I gain the experience to be accepted? Thanks!!

    Hi Melanie:) I was wondering how you coped with people telling you that Marine biology does not offer enough careers and is a highly competitive field in order to discourage you from going into that field?

    Is it too late to go back to school I'm 31 years old and want to change my career I love the ocean and I really want to work on helping clean up our environment. Do you think it's to late to pursue this kind of career?

    • @MarineBiologyMel
      @MarineBiologyMel  5 років тому

      Hi Hannah, Its never too late to learn about something you are passionate about and try something new! It's hard to offer advice without knowing your situation but maybe you could try taking a class or two would be a good place to start. Try finding a place to volunteer to get some experience to see if you like it. There are also free online courses you can take through EdX or Udemi which you can try before diving into a full degree. All the best! So glad you found the channel. :)

    Am a grade 11 student and I would like to become a marine biologist.
    I would like to ask you a few questions regarding the steps and courses to achieve my dream if you'll allow me to do so.
    What do I need to study at university or which course should I take?

      Hey Samirachagla! Congrats on graduating with your BSc! A Biotech focus degree is very cool! It could be applied to aquaculture (farming fish), ocean based pharmaceuticals, plastic alternatives (kelp based), biofuels for the shipping industry and more! What are you most interested in? Is there a professor you can speak to who might have some interest or colleagues in marine biotech?

    Hi Mel! I really want to pursue my dream in oceanography or marine biology but I've always thought I wasn't smart enough. Would you say that it's a huge amount of math involved? I suck at math 😢

    • @MarineBiologyMel
      @MarineBiologyMel  Рік тому

      Hi Angie! Thanks for watching and writing! Listen, Math is hard - I totally get that - but it is figureoutable! Keep at it and work hard. Ask for help and stay focused. You got this. Math is needed no matter where you go in life so it’s important to stick with it. Try changing your story about math. Instead of saying “I suck” maybe say, “I work hard at math and I can figure it out”. Keep me posted! I’m cheering you on, and so are the whales 🐋 !! (And 🐬, and 🐟 and 🦀 )
