    For Temperature sensor, I recommend you to use the DS18B20. With it, you will have to use a 4,7 kohm resistor. This sensor is waterproof and is made by stainless steel. It is also work with Arduino using its library. There are a lot of videos on UA-cam explaining how to use it. If you decide to use it, I can show you the simple circuit on Arduino that I am using for my master degree which uses this sensor. Ah.... congratulations for the videos, they are very good! Greetings from Brazil

    This is rad, well done Jess, I remember when you were starting out with this series, this is great...
    EDIT: haha, take a measurement go back to sleep, yepppppp, real-time clock !!!!!!!!!!
    In terms of water-proofing, that is going to be a MASSIVE challenge, water finds its way into everything... I suspect the best way to achieve it would be to find a way to hold a pressure of slightly above 1 atmosphere inside the enclosure... that will keep the air/gas in and the water out if youre able to get a good seal on it

    ? remember that some materials reflect certain wavelengths. ie: hydrogen has a resonance frequency and may reflect certain IR frequencies. In measuring molecules, you can measure certain harmonies, but understand that others will be omitted based on their reflectance. Instead of using an IR LED, I recommend using RGB and a prism. You'll have to accommodate for the wave length differences. I was looking into something similar for measuring the pH and nutrient saturation in my hydroponics solution. I came to the conclusion of using a prism with RGB LEDS, and several photo diodes as 'microphones'. Some people are using 'DIY spectrometers' using a chunk of CD to spread the light spectrum, and a box with a pin hole. If I can find it, I'll post a link to a video using 74HC595's as an arrayed input device for Arduino.

      A C7 clear Christmas light bulb, aka an incandescent bulb, will work too. the light spectrum is around 2700K.

    • @KJ7JHN
      @KJ7JHN 3 роки тому

      Come to think of it, don't use the 74hc595 array for analysis. It's a digital signal and that's why I didn't use it. The atmega 2560 has many more analog inputs. A breakout board with a crystal, and two 22pF capacitors epoxy dipped for water proofing. If you do use silicone, use multiple thin coates so it is able to off gas and cure. And a GU10 Halogen will put out more IR, but also UV, 400nM - 1000nM...

    Hi, I’m a mechanical engineer 1st year and not sure if I continue with it or change to Software Engineering. I was taught C language and really liked it, so that’s why I thought of moving to Software; however I feel I have no information or don’t know if I have the abilities to be a good Software Engineer, pls, it takes me a lot of time to solve a task because I’m new to this field.
    So the only reason I chose Mechanical is because I have some background in Physics from high school although I hate physics problem solving, but I feel I can understand it faster because of the demonstrations of Phy concepts in real world.
    Right now, I’m really confused should I do Software or do Mechanical? Please give me your advice.
    Thank you.

    Hi Jess, congrats on your progress so far!! I'm glad for you. If you or one of the subscribers could help me understand this... So you're already collecting data from the rivers with a version of your sensor but, at the same time, you're still designing your sensors? I think I got lost somewhere 😅 Or are you using an available commercial sensor in the rivers for now while working on your own sensors? I've been watching your videos but somehow I misunderstood something.

    Hey Jess, I would like your advice. I am interested in studying robotics and mechantronics engineering in university, but I really like the idea of creating robots for environmental purposes. If I want to do this, do I need to specialise in mechantronics engineering or environmental engineering? Because I feel that environmental engineering is more on the chemistry and civil side, which I don't like.

    hey! i’m a prospective engineering student and to be honest i have no idea which engineering to pick because i seem to like almost all of them because all of them teach concepts that i am really passionate about. so i decided that the best thing to do for me to be able to pick an engineering field is to know where i’ll most probably end up if i went down that certain engineering field’s path. from your videos, you seem like a really well informed mechanical engineering graduate and given you have studied at some really prestigious schools, you got to learn from/ work with people who are doing great things in the field of mechanical engineering. i just wanted to ask you like the kind of future mechanical engineers will have and what kind of stuff will we be working on/ with in the future based on the type of cutting edge stuff you have seen.

      true!!! i imagine a good sealant spray that doesn't contaminate the conductive materials would be ideal, but also I was thinking that if she could get a good seal on the enclosure and try and get the inside slightly higher than 1atm (i.e. seal it in a pressurised environment) that would also help
