i remember early 2000s going to Giant in north Melbourne and a crew of older heads where hanging out in the alley across the road, as i got closer i watched a few younger kids walk out of giant and head to the train station. The older blokes straight away cornered em all, rolled em for their paint, and took off. Being young myself i was lucky i was with an older writer who knew them when i left because they hung around, but Melbourne 90s and 2000s was hectic, especially the west, being from the north you knew never to go that way on your own
When i was an apprentice carpenter, my boss had an old railway dual cab truck. I was cleaning it one day and found a railway detonator under the drivers seat. I decided to let the head chippy know my plan and i placed the detonator in front of the front door and went up to the top level. I had the carpenter on watch ready to tell me when to let go of a brick at the exact moment the huge roid munching labourer was about to walk out the doors. I dropped the brick and it was a perfect shot. Loud was an understatement. He didn't exactly see it the way we did, I'm still running!
I’m travelling Australia at the moment and I’m from the UK and currently staying in Brisbane. I started my trip in Melbourne in early October and since leaving after 2 weeks there I’ve noticed how bombed Melbourne really is 😂
I’m a former writer from Frankston. I’m 42 years old and the dress code through the 90s was jeans Nike jackets, air max, all stolen from bayside shopping centre. The Frankston line has always been a main stay in Melbourne graffiti. Great interview. Keep up the good work Spanian you mad karnt!
This dude was born in 1995. He missed the times of graf in Australia which was 88-96. The uniform is Air Structures/BW's/Stabs/Anodynes/Span. Addidas equipment pants or 501's with a lacoste/Nike supreme court/challenge court polo. Carry paint in a Caribee backpack.
This dude was born in 1995 and was crunching it harder in heavily surveilled yards and layups, often live monitored or set up with APU / NSS and infrared bush cams, did a fair whack for repping his crew hard and smashed the network and the racks harder in the age of facial recognition, dedicated graffiti detectives and social networking sites filled with fakes and informants than half these armchair experts that claim how much better it was back in the day. From '97 '98 it was Tailwinds, Dri Fit caps, stripey polos, Dri Fit shorts,Nautica Competition jackets and Nike or Nautica Competition bumbags. Sounds like you had a uniquely wack Adelaide twist on your style adlay. Stick to riding bikes and defaming your ex online you sack of washed up shit .
Remember back in Sydney graffiti days, writers wore the north face (before it was a known brand), airmax 90s or tns, we all had the city rail gate keys there was hundreds of copies going around. Ridgey (old train set) keys even though you didn’t need them you could rip the back guards door open with your hands haha. Those were the days
I'm 42 and still doing graffiti now and then. I do spray paint art on canvases but now and then , I get the urge to revert back to my youth. And no, i don't dress like a searcher! yellow round pod with a ring of caps and powder inside, looks like lead straps on the sides. sometimes called fog signals on the box. thrown bricks at them before but they are metal so the shrapnel can be sketchy. loud tho.
The style for early writers and searchers stemmed from UK hooligan culture the whole racking the most expensive shit off the shelf to wear to prove you can do it basically and also look fresh.
Styles especially street styles defined us and meant something then it gets noticed and adopted by people( squares ) who identify with the ideas and want to be associated with the style and what it represents which dilutes the meaning and the cycle continues ..we wore air max 90’s then everyone did we wore tns now everybody does we had the shoulder bags now everyone does. I know exactly what’s you felt Spanish we do to million dollar memories the squares can only lie about
Melbourne Brisbane and Adelaide have similar graffiti scenes, even WA . Think Sydney the only state that's doesn't have the graffiti culture as much, probably why the drill music comes from Sydney, different cultures
