13 years of driving around Chicago. My advice, do it fast like a bandaid. Just make the turn using the entire road. And I mean all of it. But do it quick enough that no one even has time to cut you off on the inside. Works like a charm.
Definitely necessary the closer you get to downtown. Sometimes there is too much traffic, though, and you just have to make the best of what you’ve got, and try to at least not take out a street sign or lamp post on the corner🤣
I used to watch these videos when I was in cdl school.. Helped out a lot.. Thank you so much.. I saw this video in my feed and just smiled.. How far I’ve come.. thanks again.
I did it twice. Once in the Bronx and once in Brooklyn. Never again. You guys that run through the city are amazing. I do Boston and it is Mickey Mouse compared to NYC.
@@thegamingtruckdriver I appreciate the kind words. It’s not too bad once you know where you’re going (map it out fully ahead of time with Google maps and truck GPS). Always have a backup plan in case of construction and only give people so much room. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, get a dashcam. Too many people trying to get those insurance claims! Safe travels, driver
In school, I was taught to use the spot mirror and flat mirror for turns, but after 6 years behind the wheel, I find that the hood mirror is best. I have a much wider field of view. However, I still use the spot mirror as a backup
I'm in a daycab so I can cheat and look out the back window. I hit something once when i was a rookie in a condo turning right onto a narrow road from a somewhat narrow road. I was turned sharp enough that the trailer wasn't visible in my convex and the truck didn't have hood mirrors. Not blaming the truck, I was the guy driving it, I should have gone wider.
Goin for my p.t.i. an driving skills test next month, appreciate all the skills lessons an parking manuvering advice u give, much better than what I get on the yard or the simulator at school... Keep em' coming!!
There’s a few spots in LA where you have no choice but to ride the curb to make a right turn and your trailer will get super close to the traffic light, I always get paranoid that I will take out the light.
When I drove OTR I started out on the east coast and I'm from the midwest. Never drove a rig before and I learned driving a rig really quick... Lol. That east coast sucks and those 4 wheelers are nuts. Watch those mirrors at all times, especially on right turns. What I learned was to hug that curb with the trailer keep those idiots from trying to get past you during a turn. On right tight turns I turned into the curb, then swung left just enough to make room for the turn keeping my trailer on the right as far as possible. If you can drive that damn east coast you can drive just about anywhere. Good luck to all you new drivers, stay safe and watch those mirrors and keep them clean. Your mirrors are your best friend.
30+ years. Angle into the intersection at the light so your trailer is close to the curb (so a car can’t sneak in there) and your truck is to the farthest left you can go. Then follow his instructions making the turn. Go straight out then turn hard right. With a 53 foot trailer today you might want to move slide trailer axles/tandems all the way to the front. Hope this helps anybody today.
I was well trained to do bottom hooks for right turns safely with respect and courtesy for others drivers at the intersection and people love it when a perfect set-up can be done to perform that right turn without bother them to backup. His advices are good but never think the turn that you already know it woul be always the same like he said never take your eyes away from everything while performing a turn. I woul say never move faster than you can see.
Not sure why I’m still watching after 8 mins lol. I’m using the entire road to make a turn if I have to lol. Been doing it for years and will keep doing it because it’s safer and practical. Better to go more wide than be too tight... obviously after making sure the lane or lanes your gonna use aren’t occupied.
Thanks a lot! I just got my permit for class A. I’m about to start school 🏫 learning about the in cab inspection and out inspection. It’s good to learn early what you was teaching and it was very helpful. Thanks again!
This helps a lot looks simple and easy when someone who know how to do it but all these small details is you making that turn or not good details , backing is the hardest but still you need to know how to drive the truck In city
advice to new driver here training for license, hitting curbs is fine just don't panic, take your time and learn things, once you get grab of things it will be lot easier. Just be patient in driving, take your time even when you have become experienced driver
Awesome simulation and explanation not difficult to understand, the vision when behind the real steering wheel is a little different. But great for a learner's. Thanks for this tutorial. Truck on Safely. 🚛
These turns you demonstrated reminds me of the extreme button hook right turn from northbound cicero to Armitage or 130° left turn from division to Elston in Chicago☹
@@OtherworldlyTV haha! Most streets in Chi-town is not semi truck route. Any can best believe that. The company I drive for is Connors Transportation, with the Central American account. Shultze and Burch at 35th & Racine is where I usually drop and hook. The trailers we pull are mostly pieces of shit. Most of which cannot have the tandems slid back and forth.. The right turn from 35th S to Ashland W is very challenging when your tandems are all the way to the back.
Yeah I delivered a load from RDC Joliet to a Home Depot store near Armitage and Cicero and I lost 10 pounds of body weight by the time I got to the store
If you want to make right turn,go straight to next block. Turn left,go a block, turn left.go a block, now you are back to street you wanted to turn right on, but you can use ALL lanes to turn left now,end up going way you wanted.
I know that sounds safe but you are pretty much getting into 4 intersections instead of just 1 .. so I feel like it would be maybe more dangerous.. I’ve driven a bit in cities.. Dallas .. LA .. Salt Lake City .. Chicago.. Portland.. and they’re all different but I realized that a lot of people see you and try to get out of your way or give you space to get by safely too .. or you can wait and turn when it’s safe to go ..

I had to GOAL during a right hand turn. I was so embarrassed, but I took it too wide and had to back up. Had to ask the car behind me to back up a bit so I could back up a few feet.
I've even had another driver get into my truck and back into the space for me, because it didn't know how to. I've even done that for other drivers too, no shame in it.
In Europe, the trailer overhang is usually longer. You have to be extremely careful in the narrow lanes so as not to damage a car with the rear of the trailer.
Thats interesting now for me they taught us to turn right when your body's shoulder reach the top corner of the curb where it goes straight. It works great but just gotta be cautious as some top corners are tricky or at an obtuse angle which means turns even later or narrow so you gotta turn left then right
Stay straight turn late...and get all the real estate you can in setting up before you turn and when you see the opportunity...also if you see you're blocked sit still with your signal on honk and motion that guy stopped across the intersection to come on out, you have to wait for him in tight situations sometimes, no other way to make some of those right handers especially in older cities. I've gotten out with the hazards on before to splain it... everyone can wait, or you will twist metal and really screw up everything.
10:40 bad advice. It is illegal for anyone to cross the center line, and honking at the car waiting in the oncoming lane to back up puts the car in a dangerous situation if there are other vehicle behind it. Basically if the truck can’t make the turn safely, they need to continue straight and find another way back

It's a shame only six hundred or so people have seen this..... The amount of shitty drivers that Canada is putting on the road right now, its ludicrous. They all need to watch this video and kudos to you for trying to teach people.👍
I was the car that took the inside one time, for the right turn. As soon as I was making my move three different other drivers started honking at me. Fortunately I stopped and let the trucker do his thing, taking up the left two lanes and into a single lane on the exit of the turn. All turned out ok and I had to endure some cat calls (stupid #ucker) and nasty looks. It was a tight turn though and the trucker was taking all of the two right lanes at the beginning of the turn which is why I originally ‘thought’ I had the free right. That was 25 years ago and I am still a little more watchful.
When I make a right turn in to two lanes and it’s real tight no extra space I take my whole left lane, signal and slow down once I’m clear I take to turn. If it’s nice and wide two lane I just make it from right lane.
Though it depend's on the various truck length's. A forty five foot trailer tandem's track in a turn, eight feet. The CDL manual says never back up because you might hit someone behind you, Wait for the the vehicle infront of you to move
Exactly correct! They back up to allow you to make the turn or we can sit there all day and look at one another. 32 years and I don't back up.
Smart car drivers watch thr truck because of one simple reason, truck v car...truck always wins.

To make a right turn its best to use a Jug Handle turn... the trailer will block the four-wheeler from getting between you and the curb.
