I'm surprised to hear that you could haul a partially filled tank. Even with relatively small tanks in a pickup bed, the sloshing of the liquid makes it more difficult to drive.
9-13 is all u need, u just cant feel the liquid i assume , The only problem with 10 speed i got is . long UP Mountain ...Thats where u need to split 10 speed thats ALL !!!! if you dont pull 60k pounds---u dont need it

It takes a little more lol.Unlike a car a truck will not go in gear unless it's the right rpm and road speed!Also u have to give it fuel when down shifting.
I used to watch this video back when I was first starting highschool I loved the way he teaches and thought his truck looked really nice I’m 18 now bought my own place just had my son and started my first trucking job a few weeks ago and have plans of owning my own business and fleet someday I went from dreaming about driving these awesome trucks to doing that so thank you to the guy who made this video it’s what inspired me to keep chasing that dream

Much nicer than the way my stepdad taught me. He took me to the top of a hill had me pull into a driveway for a radio tower. He then had me reverse out on to the road and would yell THERE'S a car coming. I think I dumped the clutch and killed it about 3 times trying to get into first and the fourth time I got it. I don't think I've ever killed a stick after that.

In the Netherlands the current generation Truck drivers can't drive a manual truck anymore. Most Trucks from the last 10 years are automatic. My colleague ruined a manual transmission in 2 weeks from a almost new rental truck. Why isn't almost everything automatic like the USA cars?
I’ve been a trucker for 35 yrs and I never got a chance to drive a truck with an 18 speed trans in it. My fav back in the day was a 15 Over with 5 deep reduction. I tried to get others who had driven an 18 to explain it but it didn’t make any sense until watching this guy demonstrate. I got it now, it is basically a Super Ten with a range selector. Super 10s we’re nice, not as much moving the stick. Thanks for the demo! It’s sad that most everything on the road now has an automatic in it.

I know. I try to be respectful to truckers. When I was younger, I wasn’t as much but I’ve made friends with one at my work about 7 years ago and I realized what they go through.

Learning how to float through the gears as he did is actually pretty easy. It's a rhythm and you can pick it up pretty quickly. It's the downshifting that is harder to master. These transmission's are not synchronized. So you you can't push in the clutch and just drop it in a lower gear. So typically you only split 18th back to 17th and then you drop a full gear at a time. So you bring engin down to about a 1000 RPM's it's 450 RPM's between gears so when you come out of gear to down shift you have to rev the engine up to about 1450 RPM'S before it will go in gear. Your RPM'S have to match the speed for that gear
yea id say its way easier to float gears in a semi than in a car bc if the synchros. it took so many weeks of careful attempts in my pickup to float her gears. i floated gears in a semi the first time i ever tried. i promise its the easiest thing ever you have so much room to shift its so nice.

Not really once you master upshifting and matching the revs to the gear ots easey down shifting is a little harder but the truck will tell you when you can shift lol In a short time it becomes 2nd nature along with double clutching. This guy explained it preaty well
@@anthonyaubuchon765 Best comment that I have seen so far. These twin-countershaft transmissions do not have syncros except for the range and splitter, and those 2 are shifted by air. You must match up the speed of the input shaft to whichever gear that you are trying to go into.
@@DoeZeo it’s because of how far away everything is and because American drivers are notorious for wanting nothing but a luxurious drive. It would be kind of a pain to row through gears everywhere you go when town is half an hours drive away, and it’s nice to just get in and go and not have to worry about what gear your car is in
Ever see the gears used on a big truck? Gears on a automobile are toys in comparison! Also, automatic transmissions use what is called a planetary gear system. The gears must be small, or the transmission would be enormous.
My stepfather drove 18 wheelers for 30 years. He passed away Nov. 29th 2018. I used to go with him over the road up and down the east coast. I was always fascinated by the shifting through all the gears. He explained it to me but I was too young to understand. This video reminds me of the good times I had riding with him. I miss him a lot.

It's all the " new generation" of big rig drivers with auto trannies . I used to drive 10s and 13s. Once you get the hang of it, it's just pure pleasure to drive them. Also my car was a stick 5, at the end of the shift when I had to drive my car I kept forgetting to use the clutch, it was funny. And if you had to drive auto, oh man, looking for the clutch pedal, popping the stick shift into neutral, good times, man. Good times.
I don't either, I think it's great that someone is willing to make videos like this to help others. When I was young, videos like this would have been helpful, I had to learn everything on my own.
It’s strange to me that jobs like this aren’t considered worth while by many people. Many people look down at plumbers and trucker drivers and electricians as being too dumb to get a “real” degree or education. But shifting and 18 speed transmission, while driving a 18 wheeler is a seriously valuable skill set. This is some serious business doing a job like this. Bravo.
I’m in an apprenticeship to be an electrician. I agree that most people think that there’s not a whole lot of brainpower that goes into the trades but there’s so much damn math in learning how to bend conduit and DC and AC theory that I never used in any other job. The journeyman I worked with for the last 6 months was smarter than anyone I worked with in my office jobs.
Anthony Flournoy Exactly right. It may not be some glamorous, upper class job. But without these career fields our society would go down the drain pretty quickly. Some people may have degrees and be extremely smart in that particular “hands off” field of work. But plumbers and electricians know an actual hands on trade. And it’s just as valuable or commendable as any college degree.
Well there is an old saying that goes: “if you bought it, a truck brought it” it’s crazy how easy it is to overlook the fact that trucks keep the stores everyone shops at stocked with product for consumers to purchase. The people who look down upon truck drivers and tradesmen fail to realize that nobody else will keep stores stocked or at least as efficiently as truck drivers and nobody else will fix their toilets but plumbers when they break it by putting a turd too big down there. Perhaps if people and kids these days are exposed and shown the purpose and importance of these roles, and what these people go and can go through on a daily basis, not only would there be more of an understanding and more respect of how essential these people are, but maybe there wouldn’t be such a big shortage of new people in these industries in the United States.

I’ve driven cross country in a passenger vehicle multiple times for work. Those drives instilled respect for truckers out there. Being away from family, dealing with bad drivers, weather, and cops constantly wanting to pull them over to rack up fines for ridiculous violations.
And don't forget it's all to bring every thing that you can touch around you all the way to the slab foundation you walk on so imagine the world with out them

Imagine back in the day when there were 2 sticks because of no splitter, how you had to deal with it, and to top it off no power steering and go back far enough no AC, and that no AC is a true deal for many real world local truck drivers and go back further they unloaded the truck as over the road drivers.

Just curious, I don't know much about trucks, but manual cars you have to use the clutch every time you shift ( pretty much) otherwise you fuck up the gears. So is there some weird reason you can shift clutchless in a big truck/lorry?Maybe something to do with the synchros or rpm?
@@tomahawkANDscopZ Some trucks don’t have synchros so the driver will have to Rev match each gear to allow a smooth gear change using the engine (hence no clutch for change and only when stopping and starting). I believe this is done so that the driver cannot accidentally overev the engine (think 4th to 2nd) as the results in such a large engine vehicle would be very damaging for the engine and components.
@@tomahawkANDscopZ NP, as for cars, you can shift without clutch even with a common synchromesh gearbox, even if it is awful for your synchros (think only using it if your clutch went for example and you needed to get home). It’s all down to matching engine speed with that of the output shaft for the desired gear, assuring that the output shaft and desired gear are spinning at the same speed, allowing for a smooth gear change. A good example of a transmission that only uses clutch for stop and start in a car is a dog box, there are plenty of videos out there.

Don’t forget the many buses like ESP old school greyhound snd Crown built school coaches looking like hot dogs which, though just single stick initially - though eventually, Crown factory built buses got ten speed Fuller Roadranger transmission.

Downhill? Probably using the Georgia overdrive. Trucks have a limiter... But downhill in neutral, they can roll faster. Remember, When accelerating they are burning 1 gallon a minute. Always trying to get back some of what they burned going up the hill, on the way down.
See if i have the room and i see the signal and this is for anyone not just truck drivers i prefer to go fast so i'll speed up ASAP to get out of the way if i can otherwise i will drop back. The only time i dont like being behind a big truck is if its raining cause holy road spray

I am a student and I have always had more interest in trucks than cars because they're a lot more powerful. Now after watching this video, I am impressed by the extent of technology and engineering put into these rigs and the effort drivers have to put in for getting us our goods on time. Exactly. Try going up against an 18 wheeler while driving a Honda Civic. The Honda and driver will be scattered across all 4 lanes of the highway or one big ball of crumpled metal. Got to respect the power of 50000 pounds of truck. You won't win against it.

Awesome video! I got my CDL 20 years ago. The hardest part of the road test was having to use the clutch for every shift, and using all 18 gears. Something you almost never do when driving in the real world.
I gained a lot of respect for OTR & heavy haul drivers when riding along with my brother in his Peterbilt “Michigan special” gravel train. He went thru all 18 gears like it was second nature. I was most impressed with backing up 2 trailers over 100 yards in the pit while keeping the whole rig straight.
I’m not a trucker, but I’ve always had a stick, and I can’t WAIT for an opportunity to get to drive an 18-speed. Plus I respect trucks so much, when I was living on the road, trucks and truckers became like my bodyguards and family. Love y’all
Worked and drove one of these thing 37 years ago, have to constantly shift for even the mildest climb or descent, and every little bump on the road is enough to break your back. Have a lot of respect for truck drivers. Back in the 50's and 60's truckers were saying didn't like their boss peaking over their shoulder in a factory job, that sure changed with electronics.
Seriously, when I see people cut in front of a trailer just because there's physical space, I shake my head at them not considering the momentum the trailer needs to give up and might not be able to make back for a while
The newer Rig’s are a lot nicer and pleasant to drive especially with the air ride seats and stuff... The ride is alot softer but it really varies between trucks, for example a dump truck or a concrete mixer will probably have spring ride suspension and maybe normal seats, and then a actual Tractor Trailer with a sleeper will probably have air ride suspension and nicer seats, not every truck though. Nowadays it’s a toss up between how deep your pockets are... If their deep enough You can have a Cadillac pulling a Trailer for example hahaha, or you can have a spring ride truck a little cheaper but it’s pulling your trailer and putting that hammer down 👍 Git Er Doneee 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
When I started driving tractor trailers in the late '70's, I did it for the freedom, I didn't want my boss looking over my shoulder in a factory and scrutinizing my every move.....fast forward 45 years....my new truck has driver facing Lynx audio & video surveillance, and sign reader technology, that reports stop sign, speeding, R.R. crossing violations (we're haz-mat) Technology allows it to prompt markers for "actions" that resembles bringing a cell phone up to your ear, etc...the camera footage is reviewed by a third party who then labels the violations, ie: eating, cell phone, no seat belt, etc...also our own safety dept can bring camera up live or review120 hour prior history before needing to have 3rd party find date time of "event"....."We are in the truck with you" is what we've been told.

guys born in the 70s/80s would know what rewind means. Before CD ROM, LD, DVD, BD, HDD, USB....we had VHS tapes, playable on VCR/VCP (Video Cassette Player/Recorder), rectangular shaped box and had about thousand feet of reel in it. And after viewing it, you had to rewind the reel to the see from the start again.

And yet, I have worked Part-Time at Taco Bell and seen the merchandisers bringing the goods in for resupply the restaurant. And is a heavy load to move around with equipment. Driving miles after miles is exhausting too.

good lord don't give me an automatic!! i will roll back into someone since you don't have a clutch to hold you in place anymore. only wheel holders use automatics, not truckers!!! not only with the shifting of gears, but you have to take into account the fact that you are about 75' long and most 4 wheelers will jump in and out of lanes at a whim.
also a good reason why "billy-bob's" shouldn't be on their phones, tablets, computers, pecking at their GPS (which is frequently wrong), watching TV/DVD's.. yeah they do, among other things. just too many worthless electronics and gadgets inside all vehicles today... years ago people only wrecked because they fell asleep, were drunk/drugged up, having medical issues or driving stupidly beyond the means of their vehicle and ability :)

Daniel Cannata mainly in Asian countries Japanese heavy trucks like FUSO or Isuzu trucks are smaller in length because they dont come with cabins but had the same hauling power they also vary on how many gears but most are 6 or 12 all manual transmission

I used to drive a 1952 Mack with 30 gears using three gear shifts. One was five gears, the next split those into 3 each to make 15, and the third stick split all that into 30.
@ Andrew: When you have a powerful, torqey engine, you'd need less low gears than if you had an older, smaller motor trying to move very heavy loads. The lighter a vehicle is, the fewer gears you need, as well as if you put a powerhouse motor, like from this truck (if it were possible), you wouldn't need any gears.. just final drive / even ratio. Could even have a few OD gears in that scenario. Today's semis are gigantic, heavy and haul a lot of load, so even with big motors, you need more gears to get a heavy load moving. It also lets you put in a smaller motor (relatively) than you'd otherwise need, giving the truck better range.
I've always wondered how many gears they skip when they're unloaded. At a red light with a load it's like BWAP BWAP BWAP BWAP BWAP and they hit 5mph lol

Myself as well. I'm getting up there in years and I still ask questions about how things work. I may come off as ignorant at times but I am not arrogant. I don't know how everything works or act as if I do. I am truly curious. Just keeping myself humble and asking stupid questions enlightens me. I have found over the years that I have more knowledge than most (there's that humble thing again). Every day offers learning opportunities if you are willing to be observant and not too proud to ask stupid questions. I could make it a lot easier and just ask my Wife anytime I have a question about something, apparently she knows everything.
It apparently is simple to adapt to a higher number of gears though. People are always concerned when I tell them I start my truck off in 2nd gear - wait til I'm starting in 5th gear boys

Little tip for everyone struggling with shifting: try playing Euro Truck Simulator 2. I drove with a 12-speed for a while and now it's just an automatic movement of my left foot and right hand, everytime I hear the rpms go too high
In the old days, we monitored a lot of shit. Exhaust temp, the temp in each differential, oil temp, oil pressure, primary/secondary air pressure, air ride pressure, applied brake pressure, and many more besides. New trucks have an idiot dash: Fuel/DEF, primary/secondary air pressure, oil pressure, water temp, tach, and speed.
I dont even own a truck, and i drive regular stick.... i dont know why i am watching this BUT! The way you explain everything and the way you go about the video it top class!!! Thank you ! You're one of the best teachers out there !!! Edit: from a while of debating I actually became a truck driver!! This came in useful as I learned how to drive with a manual transmission. Even though most trucks are automatic nowadays. It's good to know. Trucking is a hell of a job with lots of responsibilities and a whole different than the world people think you live in. For every trucker out there I say thank you! I drove trucks for a short while and might be getting back into it soon. Driving rigs is a lot of fun most of the time and anyone can go to a training school to learn the ropes and within a month or 2 you could be in a rig hitting the road. But it means a lot to me and other drivers when people give us room to work. Many dont and sadly a lot of lives are lost simply because people dont know how to drive around us. So again thank you for understanding what we are trying to do!
It's not just the regular drivers. Many truckers don't know the flash codes anymore, and are downright dangerous. I watched one go through a lane merge zone (two lanes to one), driving over 100 feet of turtles, to drive straight into the lanes that were joining. (Freeway intersection) I'd say that the rig drivers now are mostly much more ignorant and rude than the ones from the 80's and 90's. They're not necessarily worse drivers - just what I said.

Down here in Australia we have 32 speed road trains which are trucks with more than 2 trailers. I drive a 1968 Mack with night cab and I have up to 6 trailers. My transmission in my Mack has 28 gears.
I'd be really interested in understanding in how you drive a 32-speed road train. I am familiar with the Aussie road trains but didn't realize how many more gears you had to deal with.

I used to drive an old 230 Cummins ten speed with a two speed single screw rear end. It was driven the same way. Nice explanation of low side, high side and splitting gears. Top speed was 68 miles per hour.

@Ryan Couchman Well your arguments with Mr Sasnak since I drive a 17 year old Hyundai Getz,and I'm not all that good at that( I hit things a lot, kerbs,posts and the odd pedestrian).
An 18 speed is also very handy when pulling a smooth bore tanker. The short shifting helps mitigate the surge that comes with a partially loaded tank.
I'm surprised to hear that you could haul a partially filled tank. Even with relatively small tanks in a pickup bed, the sloshing of the liquid makes it more difficult to drive.
9-13 is all u need, u just cant feel the liquid i assume , The only problem with 10 speed i got is . long UP Mountain ...Thats where u need to split 10 speed thats ALL !!!! if you dont pull 60k pounds---u dont need it

I used to watch this video back when I was first starting highschool I loved the way he teaches and thought his truck looked really nice I’m 18 now bought my own place just had my son and started my first trucking job a few weeks ago and have plans of owning my own business and fleet someday I went from dreaming about driving these awesome trucks to doing that so thank you to the guy who made this video it’s what inspired me to keep chasing that dream

Much nicer than the way my stepdad taught me. He took me to the top of a hill had me pull into a driveway for a radio tower. He then had me reverse out on to the road and would yell THERE'S a car coming. I think I dumped the clutch and killed it about 3 times trying to get into first and the fourth time I got it. I don't think I've ever killed a stick after that.

In the Netherlands the current generation Truck drivers can't drive a manual truck anymore. Most Trucks from the last 10 years are automatic. My colleague ruined a manual transmission in 2 weeks from a almost new rental truck. Why isn't almost everything automatic like the USA cars?

I’ve been a trucker for 35 yrs and I never got a chance to drive a truck with an 18 speed trans in it. My fav back in the day was a 15 Over with 5 deep reduction. I tried to get others who had driven an 18 to explain it but it didn’t make any sense until watching this guy demonstrate. I got it now, it is basically a Super Ten with a range selector. Super 10s we’re nice, not as much moving the stick. Thanks for the demo! It’s sad that most everything on the road now has an automatic in it.

He makes this look easy, but something tells me it take YEARS to perfect this technique. Awesome video. Makes me wish my little Saturn was a 5 spd manual instead of the slushbox it has!
Learning how to float through the gears as he did is actually pretty easy. It's a rhythm and you can pick it up pretty quickly. It's the downshifting that is harder to master. These transmission's are not synchronized. So you you can't push in the clutch and just drop it in a lower gear. So typically you only split 18th back to 17th and then you drop a full gear at a time. So you bring engin down to about a 1000 RPM's it's 450 RPM's between gears so when you come out of gear to down shift you have to rev the engine up to about 1450 RPM'S before it will go in gear. Your RPM'S have to match the speed for that gear
yea id say its way easier to float gears in a semi than in a car bc if the synchros. it took so many weeks of careful attempts in my pickup to float her gears. i floated gears in a semi the first time i ever tried.
i promise its the easiest thing ever you have so much room to shift its so nice.

Not really once you master upshifting and matching the revs to the gear ots easey down shifting is a little harder but the truck will tell you when you can shift lol
In a short time it becomes 2nd nature along with double clutching.

@@anthonyaubuchon765 Best comment that I have seen so far. These twin-countershaft transmissions do not have syncros except for the range and splitter, and those 2 are shifted by air. You must match up the speed of the input shaft to whichever gear that you are trying to go into.
So this is why all passenger cars in America are automatic... the friggin' trucks use up the entire US supply of gears!

It would be kind of a pain to row through gears everywhere you go when town is half an hours drive away, and it’s nice to just get in and go and not have to worry about what gear your car is in
Ever see the gears used on a big truck? Gears on a automobile are toys in comparison!
Also, automatic transmissions use what is called a planetary gear system. The gears must be small, or the transmission would be enormous.
My stepfather drove 18 wheelers for 30 years. He passed away Nov. 29th 2018. I used to go with him over the road up and down the east coast. I was always fascinated by the shifting through all the gears. He explained it to me but I was too young to understand. This video reminds me of the good times I had riding with him. I miss him a lot.

It's all the " new generation" of big rig drivers with auto trannies . I used to drive 10s and 13s. Once you get the hang of it, it's just pure pleasure to drive them. Also my car was a stick 5, at the end of the shift when I had to drive my car I kept forgetting to use the clutch, it was funny. And if you had to drive auto, oh man, looking for the clutch pedal, popping the stick shift into neutral, good times, man. Good times.

It’s strange to me that jobs like this aren’t considered worth while by many people. Many people look down at plumbers and trucker drivers and electricians as being too dumb to get a “real” degree or education.
But shifting and 18 speed transmission, while driving a 18 wheeler is a seriously valuable skill set. This is some serious business doing a job like this. Bravo.
I’m in an apprenticeship to be an electrician. I agree that most people think that there’s not a whole lot of brainpower that goes into the trades but there’s so much damn math in learning how to bend conduit and DC and AC theory that I never used in any other job. The journeyman I worked with for the last 6 months was smarter than anyone I worked with in my office jobs.
Anthony Flournoy Exactly right. It may not be some glamorous, upper class job. But without these career fields our society would go down the drain pretty quickly.
Some people may have degrees and be extremely smart in that particular “hands off” field of work. But plumbers and electricians know an actual hands on trade. And it’s just as valuable or commendable as any college degree.
Problem is trucks are becoming more automated and computer controlled, soon they will be self driving. Its a shame
Well there is an old saying that goes: “if you bought it, a truck brought it” it’s crazy how easy it is to overlook the fact that trucks keep the stores everyone shops at stocked with product for consumers to purchase. The people who look down upon truck drivers and tradesmen fail to realize that nobody else will keep stores stocked or at least as efficiently as truck drivers and nobody else will fix their toilets but plumbers when they break it by putting a turd too big down there. Perhaps if people and kids these days are exposed and shown the purpose and importance of these roles, and what these people go and can go through on a daily basis, not only would there be more of an understanding and more respect of how essential these people are, but maybe there wouldn’t be such a big shortage of new people in these industries in the United States.

I’ve driven cross country in a passenger vehicle multiple times for work. Those drives instilled respect for truckers out there. Being away from family, dealing with bad drivers, weather, and cops constantly wanting to pull them over to rack up fines for ridiculous violations.
Those two gauges on the left are for making sure the other gauges are working properly!
And don't forget it's all to bring every thing that you can touch around you all the way to the slab foundation you walk on so imagine the world with out them

Imagine back in the day when there were 2 sticks because of no splitter, how you had to deal with it, and to top it off no power steering and go back far enough no AC, and that no AC is a true deal for many real world local truck drivers and go back further they unloaded the truck as over the road drivers.
Gosh I miss my dad. He taught me to drive a Roadranger, a Mack and a Twin Stick. Always told me I better only touch that clutch if I'm coming to a stop or takin off haha. Kinda like dancing. Thanks for the memories man.
Just curious, I don't know much about trucks, but manual cars you have to use the clutch every time you shift ( pretty much) otherwise you fuck up the gears. So is there some weird reason you can shift clutchless in a big truck/lorry?Maybe something to do with the synchros or rpm?
@@tomahawkANDscopZ Some trucks don’t have synchros so the driver will have to Rev match each gear to allow a smooth gear change using the engine (hence no clutch for change and only when stopping and starting). I believe this is done so that the driver cannot accidentally overev the engine (think 4th to 2nd) as the results in such a large engine vehicle would be very damaging for the engine and components.

@@tomahawkANDscopZ NP, as for cars, you can shift without clutch even with a common synchromesh gearbox, even if it is awful for your synchros (think only using it if your clutch went for example and you needed to get home). It’s all down to matching engine speed with that of the output shaft for the desired gear, assuring that the output shaft and desired gear are spinning at the same speed, allowing for a smooth gear change. A good example of a transmission that only uses clutch for stop and start in a car is a dog box, there are plenty of videos out there.

Downhill? Probably using the Georgia overdrive. Trucks have a limiter... But downhill in neutral, they can roll faster. Remember, When accelerating they are burning 1 gallon a minute. Always trying to get back some of what they burned going up the hill, on the way down.
See if i have the room and i see the signal and this is for anyone not just truck drivers i prefer to go fast so i'll speed up ASAP to get out of the way if i can otherwise i will drop back. The only time i dont like being behind a big truck is if its raining cause holy road spray

Awesome video! I got my CDL 20 years ago. The hardest part of the road test was having to use the clutch for every shift, and using all 18 gears. Something you almost never do when driving in the real world.

I gained a lot of respect for OTR & heavy haul drivers when riding along with my brother in his Peterbilt “Michigan special” gravel train. He went thru all 18 gears like it was second nature.
I was most impressed with backing up 2 trailers over 100 yards in the pit while keeping the whole rig straight.
That's incredible. It's hard enough to back 1 trailer but backing 2 is very impressive

Worked and drove one of these thing 37 years ago, have to constantly shift for even the mildest climb or descent, and every little bump on the road is enough to break your back. Have a lot of respect for truck drivers.
Back in the 50's and 60's truckers were saying didn't like their boss peaking over their shoulder in a factory job, that sure changed with electronics.
Seriously, when I see people cut in front of a trailer just because there's physical space, I shake my head at them not considering the momentum the trailer needs to give up and might not be able to make back for a while
The newer Rig’s are a lot nicer and pleasant to drive especially with the air ride seats and stuff... The ride is alot softer but it really varies between trucks, for example a dump truck or a concrete mixer will probably have spring ride suspension and maybe normal seats, and then a actual Tractor Trailer with a sleeper will probably have air ride suspension and nicer seats, not every truck though. Nowadays it’s a toss up between how deep your pockets are... If their deep enough You can have a Cadillac pulling a Trailer for example hahaha, or you can have a spring ride truck a little cheaper but it’s pulling your trailer and putting that hammer down 👍 Git Er Doneee 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
When I started driving tractor trailers in the late '70's, I did it for the freedom, I didn't want my boss looking over my shoulder in a factory and scrutinizing my every move.....fast forward 45 years....my new truck has driver facing Lynx audio & video surveillance, and sign reader technology, that reports stop sign, speeding, R.R. crossing violations (we're haz-mat) Technology allows it to prompt markers for "actions" that resembles bringing a cell phone up to your ear, etc...the camera footage is reviewed by a third party who then labels the violations, ie: eating, cell phone, no seat belt, etc...also our own safety dept can bring camera up live or review120 hour prior history before needing to have 3rd party find date time of "event"....."We are in the truck with you" is what we've been told.

Before CD ROM, LD, DVD, BD, HDD, USB....we had VHS tapes, playable on VCR/VCP (Video Cassette Player/Recorder), rectangular shaped box and had about thousand feet of reel in it. And after viewing it, you had to rewind the reel to the see from the start again.

I had a co truck W900 13spd and everything from a 9spd, Super10 to a couple of 12spd autos. I always enjoyed the manuals until I get to LA and then I'll take an auto any day. I see you are out of OK, I have family there (Choctaw on my dad's side) in the Indianola/ McAlester area. Our family has our own exit on 69. Exit 106 Nale Rd.

And yet, I have worked Part-Time at Taco Bell and seen the merchandisers bringing the goods in for resupply the restaurant. And is a heavy load to move around with equipment. Driving miles after miles is exhausting too.
From now on, I'm gonna be patient and calm if my Amazon order is delayed.

not only with the shifting of gears, but you have to take into account the fact that you are about 75' long and most 4 wheelers will jump in and out of lanes at a whim.
It is complex to stop the dang truck, and nt to mention the load want to jack knife.
also a good reason why "billy-bob's" shouldn't be on their phones, tablets, computers, pecking at their GPS (which is frequently wrong), watching TV/DVD's.. yeah they do, among other things.
just too many worthless electronics and gadgets inside all vehicles today... years ago people only wrecked because they fell asleep, were drunk/drugged up, having medical issues or driving stupidly beyond the means of their vehicle and ability :)

Japan has tiny trucks. They're like minivan size but, somewhat truck shaped.
Daniel Cannata mainly in Asian countries Japanese heavy trucks like FUSO or Isuzu trucks are smaller in length because they dont come with cabins but had the same hauling power they also vary on how many gears but most are 6 or 12 all manual transmission
Isuzu, Hino, UD(Nissan) and Fuso(Mitsubishi) all make trucks big enough to option this style of gearbox into. If you REALLY wanted to.

I used to drive a 1952 Mack with 30 gears using three gear shifts. One was five gears, the next split those into 3 each to make 15, and the third stick split all that into 30.
why 30 gears though? like what are you hauling that requires that many gears? were you in a mountainous area?
@ Andrew: When you have a powerful, torqey engine, you'd need less low gears than if you had an older, smaller motor trying to move very heavy loads. The lighter a vehicle is, the fewer gears you need, as well as if you put a powerhouse motor, like from this truck (if it were possible), you wouldn't need any gears.. just final drive / even ratio. Could even have a few OD gears in that scenario. Today's semis are gigantic, heavy and haul a lot of load, so even with big motors, you need more gears to get a heavy load moving. It also lets you put in a smaller motor (relatively) than you'd otherwise need, giving the truck better range.
\\you wouldn't need any gears.. just final drive \\\ Larry, you'd strip the teeth off the gears before you got it moving.

Myself as well. I'm getting up there in years and I still ask questions about how things work. I may come off as ignorant at times but I am not arrogant. I don't know how everything works or act as if I do. I am truly curious. Just keeping myself humble and asking stupid questions enlightens me. I have found over the years that I have more knowledge than most (there's that humble thing again). Every day offers learning opportunities if you are willing to be observant and not too proud to ask stupid questions. I could make it a lot easier and just ask my Wife anytime I have a question about something, apparently she knows everything.

Little tip for everyone struggling with shifting: try playing Euro Truck Simulator 2. I drove with a 12-speed for a while and now it's just an automatic movement of my left foot and right hand, everytime I hear the rpms go too high

In the old days, we monitored a lot of shit. Exhaust temp, the temp in each differential, oil temp, oil pressure, primary/secondary air pressure, air ride pressure, applied brake pressure, and many more besides.
New trucks have an idiot dash:
Fuel/DEF, primary/secondary air pressure, oil pressure, water temp, tach, and speed.

For every trucker out there I say thank you! I drove trucks for a short while and might be getting back into it soon. Driving rigs is a lot of fun most of the time and anyone can go to a training school to learn the ropes and within a month or 2 you could be in a rig hitting the road. But it means a lot to me and other drivers when people give us room to work. Many dont and sadly a lot of lives are lost simply because people dont know how to drive around us. So again thank you for understanding what we are trying to do!
It's not just the regular drivers. Many truckers don't know the flash codes anymore, and are downright dangerous. I watched one go through a lane merge zone (two lanes to one), driving over 100 feet of turtles, to drive straight into the lanes that were joining. (Freeway intersection)
I'd say that the rig drivers now are mostly much more ignorant and rude than the ones from the 80's and 90's. They're not necessarily worse drivers - just what I said.

Down here in Australia we have 32 speed road trains which are trucks with more than 2 trailers. I drive a 1968 Mack with night cab and I have up to 6 trailers. My transmission in my Mack has 28 gears.

I used to drive an old 230 Cummins ten speed with a two speed single screw rear end. It was driven the same way. Nice explanation of low side, high side and splitting gears. Top speed was 68 miles per hour.
And here I am again, a year and some later, commenting once again how I come back and watch this video every year just for kicks. It’s just so damn good. You can tell someone who is intelligent versus just experienced, and the OP is definitely intelligent just from his speech and explanatory ability alone. I would trust this guy with my wallet.
