Agreed completely on the coaching thing. Between rounds, absolutely- sometimes people need a pep talk or reminders of the game plan- but mid match shouldn't be a thing.
I agree with you 100 percent. I have been doing martial arts for 15 years (Kempo, grappling and MMA), competing in my younger days and I would never want my Sensei giving me call outs during a fight. Coaches should not be able to make call outs during a competition fight. That is like having a 2nd pare of eyes feeding you information and it should be considered cheating. Imagine setting up a play by misleading your opponent and as soon as you are about to execute, his coach; who is able to see from a completely different angle says, "Ignore his X he's going for your Y!" Foiling your entire play or setup.
Guess you've never actually fought in a match, because that's exactly what they are there to do. I have been in the cage, the ring, and also have had my pro card as a second as well.
As someone who is not into competitive sports at all, I agree 100% on the coach thing When you showed that the enemy coach yelled advice in the first fight I was like "Wait? That's legal? What a bs competition" Takes out a lot of value from the actual participants

I just lost a K1 fight last night but I'm so happy I did it. Combat sports are an amazing emotional roller-coaster.
I LOVE this video. When you do fight competitions in things like BJJ, boxing, MMA, etc., you are pretty much fighting as a team with your trainer/gym vs your opponents. It's your execution that matters, not what you're told. If someone tells you something you can't do, it can't help you.

I like your style Ranton. Lacking the full-on competitive spirit is rare in champions, but there is one great MMA fighter, and Champion, who exemplified that attitude-- you already know who I am thinking of, don't you? Yes, Georges St. Pierre stated that he loved the training, but disliked the fights. He was always intensely nervous before competing. I admire him, and his/your attitude a lot, though I was extremely competitive in my youth, and it served me well. You are obviously very strong and coordinated Ranton, and you could've gone far in MMA, or whatever competitive discipline you chose, had you begun serious training at an early age. Enjoy your training, and your fights--win or lose. Cheers, Ian.

I've recently started training in BJJ after my martial art's classes. Sparring is definitely the highlight of the experience for me and running drills is always a fun time too. Its far more exerting than kickboxing, something i didn't expect. So much more involved and technical compared to throwing kicks and punches. We occasionally train with no gi's and that's a very nice change of pace, seeing as how you cant rely on fabric or belt grips anymore. I've only ever competed in kickboxing tournaments and those are always a good time and completely suck the energy out of me. But I don't think I'm ready for a BJJ tournament any time soon haha. Just a little to daunting of a task for me. Props to you for getting right into the scene like that Ranton! A very inspirational display of courage there. Another reason why you're my favorite content creator. Looking forward to hearing about your progression in the sport, I'm sure greatness lies in your future!
Couldn’t agree more about coaching. It’s great to have the support from your team and family and friends and even other fighters; coaching during matches is not something I like or agree with either. Playing basketball as a kid/high school/college has shown me great coaches and very bad ones. The bad ones are usually the most talkative and annoying during games and they take the fun out of the sport. I just want to play ball! :)

Totally with you there on the coaches. Call outs should only be permitted during training, not competition - for the exact reason you stated: it's a duel of individual skill to claim a match. Just like how you wouldn't have a coach pointing out all your chess moves at a tournament.
The legend is back BABY... I have the same issues with the coaching sound in the backgroung. It´s like fighting two people at the same time, because you have to think / react faster. Bassically I agree with everything you say.
I'm totally with you! When fighting, I want to concentrate on the "enemy" and not on his/her coach or even mine. I'm busy enough, doin' my own stuff and don't want to have to listen to somebody else... 😅
Awesome vid again rantony watermelony, congrats to u and ur wife on the silver medals. I agree completely about the whole coaches cheating thing. You explain the exact way I feel about it and it’s the thing that takes all the fun out of it for me. 👋🏽
I've done bjj for 4 years, done a ton of tournaments, and can safely say that I agree with him 100% on "hating everything except the actual match" also I have a similar mindset about a lot of the stuff so it's nice to see someone who agrees. Maybe it's because I trained Tang Soo Do for 7 years and it just gave me a similar mindset, but yeah.
I am very similar to you in your rolling style. Like one of my head instructors is known for saying, "Keep it playful". It doesn't mean you don't take it seriously, but it is a good mindset for learning.
I waited for this video! Dude thanks for this update! Not the same, but I've been an Eagle Claw practitioner for 15 years and started doing Judo some months ago. Went to my first competition and it went like your second fight but I loved it! Keep it up and I would love to see updates on your BJJ journey
Cool to see you training a competitive martial art I also do bjj used to think kung fu was real magic when I was a kid because of kung fu panda always liked ur vids keep it up 👍
Glad to see you're back man. That's awesome that you competed. I understand what you mean about not having that "killer mindset". Being a nice, smiley guy who wouldn't hurt a fly was ultimately why I gave up on BJJ (for now at least). Everyone else at the club took it so seriously but here I was giggling while sparring like a child play fighting and saying "Oops, sorry!" every time I accidently hit or kicked them.
9:46 I do agree +1 on that... Cause the oponent also hears whats being said and will be aware of it and such. what ev, u nailed the point. Also been thinking about this before.
Dude!! That’s heckin awesome that you’re competing at white belt with 4 matches! I’m at brow belt and still have zero nerves. I think it’s my body compensating for the chaotic environment by sedating me lol. But hey the best fighters in the world are relaxed and having fun! Good stuff dude, OSS🤙

i agree on the coach yelling part of competitions. at my dojo, we actually have the same opinion when it comes to testing our own skills so when we coach each other, we are giving advice on things that arent really about the match. like, one students holds his breath and we just yell at him to breathe. one student rushes too much, so we yell to slow down and take his time. basically we dont tell them what to do but how to pace.

Great effort Ranton🥋👊 Respect for doing this and keep up the great work! Always a pleasure to watch your channel.
"The one who wins a match or constantly flirts with his wife while trying is halfway to victory(in life), the one who has done neither has just begun, but the one who both flirts with his wife and wins the match has already secured victory(in life) - Sun Tzu, 500BC( probably)
I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE COACHING IN COMP!
This was an awesome video, you're such relatable nerd and seeing modern competition from your relatively fresh perspective is pretty exciting.
Totally with you there on the coaches. Call outs should only be permitted during training, not competition - for the exact reason you stated: it's a duel of individual skill to claim a match. Just like how you wouldn't have a coach pointing out all your chess moves at a tournament.
I agree about no talking from coaches during fights...I feel the exact same way. It's between two people not 4 or more...
👋🏽
I’ve missed you man your a breath of fresh air I love your editing aswell bro I’ve been watching for years
I've done bjj for 4 years, done a ton of tournaments, and can safely say that I agree with him 100% on "hating everything except the actual match" also I have a similar mindset about a lot of the stuff so it's nice to see someone who agrees. Maybe it's because I trained Tang Soo Do for 7 years and it just gave me a similar mindset, but yeah.
HES BACK AND A BANGER VIDEO AS WELL!!
I've been doing BJJ for almost 2 years and its really awesome to see this kind of content. Love your videos ❤
Yooooo, we need more of this! Luv this! Welcome back RANTONI MY BRONI
I am very similar to you in your rolling style. Like one of my head instructors is known for saying, "Keep it playful". It doesn't mean you don't take it seriously, but it is a good mindset for learning.
Coming from Taekwondo tournaments, that whole thing around the fights, traveling, waiting etc., is atrocious. 100% agree
You’ll still be our favorite shaolin monk and we will always root for you in your future fights
I waited for this video! Dude thanks for this update! Not the same, but I've been an Eagle Claw practitioner for 15 years and started doing Judo some months ago. Went to my first competition and it went like your second fight but I loved it! Keep it up and I would love to see updates on your BJJ journey
Got my first Muay Thai fight coming up, very excited and this makes me even more excited.
Cool to see you training a competitive martial art I also do bjj used to think kung fu was real magic when I was a kid because of kung fu panda always liked ur vids keep it up 👍
Love this content too, Ranton! Dying to see you continue with game reviews but fighting content and sick edits deliver too
Glad to see you're back man.
This was so relatable, I'm also a chill, lazy white belt that doesnt want to hurt anyone
"I told the ref I was having fun, and told my opponent he was doing a good job" Ranton's a real life anime protagonist
9:46 I do agree +1 on that... Cause the oponent also hears whats being said and will be aware of it and such. what ev, u nailed the point. Also been thinking about this before.
it's so cool to see you on mat... BJJ really gets bigger everyday
Bro! I'm so happy for you! Keep doing what you love!
Ranton is unique, he is the only "legit" and "real" Shaolin monk who became a youtuber, with contents about his previous life as a monk, about video games, martial arts, shaolin monks, some random stuffs, compete in BJJ and gives his great insights about these things. 👍
9:13 people learn from losing - failing - because of negativity bias. It's crucial for animals to learn and survive (exist) at all. So yea it's not "just a cliche".
10:48 uoooh cute and wholesome
That's awesome. Don't talk about all your fights or anything, but I did love this video.
going and competing alongside your wife, that's so cool man! good for you two.
Cono man, the king has uploaded again! Missed these sit down talks.
i agree on the coach yelling part of competitions. at my dojo, we actually have the same opinion when it comes to testing our own skills so when we coach each other, we are giving advice on things that arent really about the match. like, one students holds his breath and we just yell at him to breathe. one student rushes too much, so we yell to slow down and take his time. basically we dont tell them what to do but how to pace.
I love your videos !!!!! you made my day so much better!
