Actually, The Beast doesn't have an official name. "Adam" came from an Internet rumor back in the early 2000's, but it's not actually his name. His official name is just "The Beast", sorta like how the prince in Snow White is just named "The Prince" and in Cinderella it's "Prince Charming". Source: I'm a Disney World cast member who gets asked this question frequently lmfao.
When watching this movie one of the saddest thoughts/theories I've come across is that slowly the Beast has been losing his humanity to the point that if he hadn't have been turned back he would have eventually forgotten how to speak. You notice this in how before Belle arrives he walks on all fours and roars and laps his food like an animal. He starts walking on two legs and eating properly the more time he spends with her.
Holy shit you’re right. Beast/Adam had been so isolated from humanity that his own had started disappearing, the only other company he had was his servants and probably the animals in the forest.
Fun fact: during the song "Be our guest" Lumiere states that they've been trapped for 10 years. The Beast's transformation was set to be finalized on his 21st birthday. This means that the curse was put on him when he was 10/11 years old. This child had an old woman ask to stay the night. He was absolutely correct in saying no. It's called "stranger danger" and I feel so sorry for him. It also explains why he has poor table manners & doesn't read very well. This man needs school & therapy.
It states by his 21st year, not 21st birthday, so I always interpreted it as his 21st year as a beast, that in the first 10 years the beast was hopeful that the curse would be broken but after that he became depressed and withdrawn as he had given up all hope. So going by this they were frozen in time; no one would age, which makes sense considering Chip is still a young child.
In the Diamond Edition DVD there's a segment in the Making Of addressing the whole age issue. They explained the "10 years we've been rusting" line in Be Our Guest was an oversight. When you remove the song's line off the picture, everything falls back into place: the portrait and stained glass portray him as a young adult as intended and chip still being a child makes sense, cuz they got frozen in time. The narrator does say "21st year" instead of "21st birthday".
You skipped quite possibly the best line that shows how little the Village at large cares about Belle and Maurice. "So you want me to throw her father in the Asylum if she refuses to marry you? That's despicable. I love it!"
The Beasts name is Prince Adam. Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics to the songs in this movie, he was ahead of his time, its really sad he’s not around anymore.
From what I've read, Adam isn't an official name. It was apparently from some CD ROM game but it was outsourced and apparently Disney didn't have input on that... it's probably the best option we have right now though... Oh well... I don't know why they don't just go with it.

Can't relate to people who don't understand that the Beast is a metaphor for depression and how it affects someone, and that the story is not about "stockholm syndrome".
Yep but kids won't see it that way they'll see that even if someone is horrible to you true love can change them. I don't think it's the right mindset we shoul be giving
@@Mel-jl8dt to be fair, Belle got super pissed at him and didn’t take any of his crap. She noticed his WANT to change. If he didn’t want it, the movie never would’ve gone anywhere. That’s what I saw as a child. I grew up with this movie, Belle has always been my favorite princess, right next to Mulan. I’ve run into my fair share of Gastons, the ones that are beastly without a want to change, I avoid them like the plague.
The Beast is also a metaphor for someone living with AIDS. Howard Ashman was dying of AIDS at the time where people were misinformed about the disease and the homophobic agenda at the 1980’s-early 90’s didn’t help. When you realize that most of Ashman’s songs are about his hopes and dreams of being loved and free from society, it puts a bittersweet smile on your face and tears in your eyes 😢
Fun fact: Animators back then really liked to put easter eggs in their movies, so what you saw in the beginning, was in fact Bambi`s mother and another fun fact, Belle actually shows up in Hunchback of Notre dame in few seconds, in one of their songs.
When I was little, my dad would teach me to waltz with this playing in the background. This is the only animated movie he likes, and would play it often and we’d dance during the ballroom scene. Watching this makes me nostalgic. I love the enthusiasm for this film.
This movie is such a masterpiece. The expressions of every character really adds to their humanization (like the scene Belle takes her father's place as Beast's prisoner, we actually SEE how the beast is feeling about this. He looks sad and uncertain, he actually shows some remorse.). And you of course have the Beast's character development, which is great. Belle actually takes the lead with their relationship many times, showing us she WANTS to help him, and they bond over her teaching the Beast how to do things like read, be kind to animals, and to dance and eat food. The Beast changes himself for her happiness, even giving her a library for her to enjoy. He doesnt focus on the spell anymore, he loves Belle and just wants what's best for her- which included letting her go to her father by the end. This film is such a marvel that more people should be talking about!!
My favorite Disney Princess movie 💙 I 100% agree with the idea of marrying someone after they gave me a huge library, like no joke Edit: I think a lot of people would agree with you about liking Adam's Beast form more
For nearly every version of Beauty and the Beast, there’s people who prefer the Beast form more 😁 Legend has it that when Greta Garbo saw the 1946 version (which served as some inspiration for this version) she called out, “Give me back my Beast!” following the transformation scene.
My family use to tease me and say I would grow up to only marry a man if he gave me a library or owned one like the one in the movie all my sisters went through a boy crazy faze & I never did still haven’t...but the more time passes the more I think their right.
@@minwellitsanicknamebegrate2531 Honestly, I wouldn't blame you, especially a library similar to the one in the movies. Not only are they just full to the brim with books, they're also gorgeous!
Yessss! This and Tangled are probably my favorite Disney movies, and I'm really happy you liked both of them :D Edit: Oh wow you got the special edition with Human Again! That's not normally in the movie, it was a cut scene that they added back in for the special edition DVD! It's also featured in the Broadway version, which has some other great original songs :]
I highly recommend that people go to see the off-Broadway version of the stage show as well. It came through Denver a few years back and was simply brilliant. Easily the best stage show I've ever seen, both from a production standpoint and by dint of the actors. This is my favorite Disney movie and the stage show really does it justice.
There’s a Tumblr post that states that what’s most terrifying about Gaston is that everyone loves him in spite of knowing he’s a piece of trash. And that Belle is ostracized for her interest in reading despite treating people with respect.
I haven't even started the video but I just wanted to say it makes me very happy whenever I see there's a new video from you. I'm a 3D animator so I really enjoy watching people enjoy animated movies in particular. Keep up the awesome work!!
This version is so sharp. Has it been digitally remastered? Looks so much better than when I watched it...granted; it’s been over 15 yrs, but this looks very modern.
This is the remaster. The 'Human Again' scene was added into this version (it was cut from the original to improve the flow) and the art was cleaned up. I'm guessing he's watching it on Disney+.
I also noticed the coloring in the Maurice-meets-Beast scene is different. In the original release, he was concealed in darkness right up to the point he stepped into the light and revealed himself to Belle, which in my opinion was a much more frightening and dramatic introduction which should have been preserved.
@@domi9146it doesn’t help that the Beast is in love with a woman called Belle the French version of Bella 😂. That’s what I thought of when he called him Edward.
Ngl, i would be interested in an alternative story where *Gaston* ends up being the one kept captive, and he learns to be a better person. Both he and the beast learn together to just... be better people. Doesn't even have to specifically be those characters, but maybe new characters based on em. I just find that premise kind of... interesting
Fun fact: When Gaston falls you see in one frame skulls in his eyes, to confirm that he does die from his fall. Also, the curse, not only affected his staff, but the whole town too, because you'd expect at least one person would remember a huge castle near your town, right?
I was 6 years old when this movie came out. I had a figure of Beast that I carried around everywhere. I had the biggest crush on him, even at that age. It was my terrible secret. Now I'm 36 and I have been drawing hot monster men in high fantasy stories all my life, usually about being outcasts and misunderstood and finding the love of their life. Turned out that as an autistic person, I always felt like an outcast or alien, so monsters were always super relatable. :') ♥
My mom told me when she and my dad took my sister to see this in the theater, it was the first time she had been to a movie where the audience stood up and clapped at the end.
Not gonna lie I was very confused when the scene with them singing about being human again popped up. Then I remembered that the only version of this movie I have is a VHS tape recording from the 1990's.... That whole scene wasn't in the original.
It was originally a cut song from the movie, that was added back into the Broadway version, and became so liked, that it was added back in as a extended release cut.
What’s funny is that I grew up with a Special Edition DVD of Beauty and the Beast that included that song, so when I found out many years later that it was not known to most people, I was so confused lol.
this has now become my comfort youtube video. something about seeing a scottish guy getting emotional and involved in a childhood favorite film is NICE
"That's what happens when I look in a mirror. It breaks." lol I know this was a joke but I just wanted to say that you're actually very handsome. ideal man tbh
I loved this movie when I was a kid and I still do it today. Both get to know each other step by step and see both their strengths and their weaknesses. Unlike some other movies, conflicts are not immediately resolved, but instead addressed directly. While Gaston “remains blind and deaf” to pursue his ideals, the Beast (Adam) is “woken up” by Belle holding him “a mirror. ” He even tries to understand Belle and her point of view. There’s more to this story than you can tell at first glance.
The scene where they sing Human Again wasn’t in the original movie. It was cut for time. When Beauty and the Beast became a broadway musical, they added a bunch of songs. They animated it and added it to all subsequent releases.
Okay. First things first. You are so right about the Subway cookies, my wife and I tend to get the White Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut! They're all good though! Love, Love, *LOVE* this reaction! You are so on point with this. The grin on your face when Gaston died, also the snarl you emitted when Gaston stabbed the Beast... awesome! Yeah. This is going to be one of those reactions that I rewatch, because it just makes me happy! Thank you, buddy! Was awesome!
Going to have to rain on a lot of parades here, but Beast's name is not Adam. He is literally credited in the film as "Beast." The directors have both stated, as has the producer, in interviews that at no time was the character referred to as anything by them or the animation teams other than "The Beast." Dave Smith is often cited as a source of the Prince Adam name, but he too denies this vehemently in a D23 interview and if you look at all his A-Z books, he mentions this nowhere. In fact, the ONLY place that it can be found is a 1998 PC game called "The D-Show" (I had it, can vouch for this) which asked what his name was and the correct choice was Prince Adam. This game was not developed by Disney, however. It was licensed out to a 3rd party and Disney didn't really have much of a say. Fans have just latched onto the idea and it is a myth that simply will not die. That aside, this film is an utter masterpiece.
"Human Again" was not in the theatrical release of this film, trimmed for time. It is generally thought that lyricist Howard Ashman, who was dying of AIDS, was writing about his yearning to be free of that disease and feel human again.

"it's called love, run away" 😂😂😂
This joke has been said many times on many videos but
Gaston really did win the no bell prize
Another really breathtaking Disney animated film from this era is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Really great story and music.
That’s also one of Disney’s darker movies
That movie gets pretty dark. Absolutely top notch animation. And Hell Fire is an incredible song. Absolutely suggest watching this one.
And to think.. Angela Lansbury (Ms Potts) still lives at 95 years old!
And still can sing bless her heart
@@caseyh8386: COULD sing. Unfortunately brilliant, veteran, British actress ( Dame ) Angela Lansbury passed away ( died, ) at age 96, in 2022.
@KayoMichaels: DID live. Actually to age 96. Sadly, she passed away ( died ) in 2022.
@@robertc.1958 Yeah.. died later on that year... posted when she was still alive...
@@KayoMichiels : Oh, yeah. Posted ( your post ) TWO ( 2 ) years ago. Duh! My bad!
I love the enthusiasm for this film.
the satisfaction on his face when Gaston fall and dies is a chef's kiss
Welchy being Team Edward for 28 minutes straight.
team ADAM!! Lol
Oooooooooh, please no! WRONG FANDOM. X'D
LOL I just got the joke and now I am dead! 🤣🤣
My favorite Disney Princess movie 💙
I 100% agree with the idea of marrying someone after they gave me a huge library, like no joke
Edit: I think a lot of people would agree with you about liking Adam's Beast form more
For nearly every version of Beauty and the Beast, there’s people who prefer the Beast form more 😁 Legend has it that when Greta Garbo saw the 1946 version (which served as some inspiration for this version) she called out, “Give me back my Beast!” following the transformation scene.
That title CANNOT be real! "For the first time" ?
O M E G A *B R U H*
It's Beauty and The Beast.🤯
Btw, Belle is the best Disney Princess, hands down
I never watched it either, watching together lmao
But to be fair I haven't watched most Disney movies
@@AnxiousTrixie I started watching Disney movies when I was 13. Can't blame ya lol
Some people probably just never got around to watching it, and by the way Jasmine is the best 🤣🤣🤣
Yessss! This and Tangled are probably my favorite Disney movies, and I'm really happy you liked both of them :D
Edit: Oh wow you got the special edition with Human Again! That's not normally in the movie, it was a cut scene that they added back in for the special edition DVD! It's also featured in the Broadway version, which has some other great original songs :]
:))
No lie you really have become my favourite reactor ❤️
Wow what a great compliment!! Thank you so much!
I haven't even started the video but I just wanted to say it makes me very happy whenever I see there's a new video from you. I'm a 3D animator so I really enjoy watching people enjoy animated movies in particular. Keep up the awesome work!!
little me would always get heated when maurice blamed philip for taking the dark way. like square up tiny man I will not stand this horse slander>:(
This version is so sharp.
When the princes name is Adam and he’s called Edward 😐😅
Wonder if he's seen the Twilight movies... He wouldn't be calling the Beast as Edward after that.
@@Aron_Marie yeee, name Edward was basically ruined by Twilight, as soon as I hear it I think "oh hell nah, not the vampire" :))
@@domi9146it doesn’t help that the Beast is in love with a woman called Belle the French version of Bella 😂. That’s what I thought of when he called him Edward.
Your smile when Gaston falling was priceless 😂😂😂😂😂
Cookie Monster Welchy makes an appearance!
Also my god yes, "Gaston is the real beast" yes. THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER!!
You gotta go on a Disney princess binge now 😂
I laughed all the time and I sincerely needed that. Thank you, Welchyy!
Thank you Katia for even being here! 😊
I completely lost it when you grinned at Gaston dying 😂😂😂
Ngl, i would be interested in an alternative story where *Gaston* ends up being the one kept captive, and he learns to be a better person. Both he and the beast learn together to just... be better people. Doesn't even have to specifically be those characters, but maybe new characters based on em. I just find that premise kind of... interesting
10:58 "Give her a smile" OH GOD LMAO!!!
The Beast does have an actual name which is Prince Adam 👁👄👁✌
Fun fact: When Gaston falls you see in one frame skulls in his eyes, to confirm that he does die from his fall. Also, the curse, not only affected his staff, but the whole town too, because you'd expect at least one person would remember a huge castle near your town, right?
Hufflepuff watches Beauty and the Beast and says, "I wonder what he would look like if he shaved all his fur off?" 😅😅😅
My favourite Scottish UA-camr back at it
Aww thank youuu 😄
I was 6 years old when this movie came out. I had a figure of Beast that I carried around everywhere. I had the biggest crush on him, even at that age. It was my terrible secret.
Now I'm 36 and I have been drawing hot monster men in high fantasy stories all my life, usually about being outcasts and misunderstood and finding the love of their life.
Turned out that as an autistic person, I always felt like an outcast or alien, so monsters were always super relatable. :') ♥
Mrs Pot was played by Angela Lansbury (lead on Murder She Wrote).
This was in 1991, the first animated movie to be nominated in history to Best Picture in the Oscars. Something to value!
My mom told me when she and my dad took my sister to see this in the theater, it was the first time she had been to a movie where the audience stood up and clapped at the end.
The smile at Gaston’s death says everything. 🤣
I was confused too!
I met Belle’s voice actress, actually. She’s very kind!
The scene where they sing Human Again wasn’t in the original movie. It was cut for time. When Beauty and the Beast became a broadway musical, they added a bunch of songs. They animated it and added it to all subsequent releases.
I haven’t seen this since I was little! Can’t wait for the reaction🥰
Omg! My fav. Disney movie!! NEED. TO. WATCH. THIS. COMMENTARY.
As soon as I am home!
"He's got that much gold and he can't afford socks?" XD XD I lost my shit.
Okay. First things first.
You are so right about the Subway cookies, my wife and I tend to get the White Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut! They're all good though!
Love, Love, *LOVE* this reaction! You are so on point with this.
The grin on your face when Gaston died, also the snarl you emitted when Gaston stabbed the Beast... awesome!
Yeah. When Beast/Eduard dies...I seriously lost it first time I ever saw the movie, and get choked up every time I've watched it since. Your reaction at that point was so POWERFUL! *Well done!*
Your humming at the end with the theme song, yo people!
Welchy can sing; seriously!
Last week you said you wanted to start watching more live action stuff so maybe a decent transition would be Enchanted, piece of is animated (only like 13 minutes of the entire movie 107 minute movie tho) and the rest is live action (it's also kinda a princess movie)
This is my all-time favourite animated Disney film. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I'm a relatively new member of the Umbrella Gang but I've been watching your videos for a while. Your reactions are very entertaining! I also love that you are Scottish, which is my favourite foreign accent in the world. It's the best! I wish you continued success with your channel. - From a Canadian umbrella with some Scottish blood... and proud of it!
Beauty and the Beast 2: The Trip to Bed, Bath, and Beyond because they have no dishes or candle holders or clocks. Gotta stop at IKEA on the way back too for furniture.
They didn’t originally have that big a part for Chip, but the kid who did the voice just won them over so they expanded it
That scene with Gaston's muddy boots on the book caused me to feel immense horror and disgust as a kid. This is one of my favourites too. And yes, taking to chickens is normal. I talk to dogs. Same thing. Also #SaveWelchysDebonairsmile.
Okay, going to stop now. Too much good content to comment on so I'm going to summarize it. This video is *awesome* . Favourite video so far!🤣
I love how quickly you got so invested in the story. Just goes to show how amazing the writing and animation is.
Also dont feel bad about your eyebrows, thats what eybrow filler is for
The whole thing about Belle not eating ran through my mind as a kid and still does to this day. I watch this movie all the time and just say "Wait... you didn't eat a damn thing! Hungry my bum!"
I remember watching this in vhs with my mom when I was a child. Years later, we both watched the live action version together as well. Till today, that intro scene with the music and roses gives me goosebumps.
Ps- first time noticing that when Gaston falls, for a moment, there are skulls in his eyes!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought "But she didn't even get to actually eat" during the Be Our Guest song XD I mean she nibbled on some things but that wasn't a meal!
"I'll give you a place to stay..." "MY BELLY." I went from shoulder-shaking giggling to full-on laughter, you've earned another subscription 😂😂
11:03 that was adorable 😭😭
😅
This is my favorite movie of all time. I love watching people discover how great it is!
So you want Belle to marry Edward? This isn't Twilight lmao 🤣
(I think other comments have said it before, but apparently his name is Adam).
...omg it just clicked. Lmao.
I am currently rewatching vids and I don’t know why, but this is my comfort video 🫠
Was anyone else DYING when he decided to call the beast Edward? Edward and Bell(a) anyone??? XD
😂 good I’m not the only one
22:25 or, the castle is on a high hill so you can easily see it from the village which isn't even a mile away.
This and Princess and the Frog? CHEF'S KISS.
Princess and the Frog was so good, I was actually kinda surprised.
Gaston: * dies *
Everyone:* nods in approval *
You are absolutely my favorite reactor. Adorable, funny, sweet...
Until I found out you watched this without your mum. 😉
Aww thank you!! 😄 and hahahaha nooooo I’m sorry 😭
I suppose since she wasn't home, I can forgive you this once. 🤗
We need a follow up of Welchy and his mother watching and reacting to Beauty and the Best live action.
I LOVE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TOO!!!!! I grew up with this Disney movie since I was a toddler. it's my all-time favorite Disney classic and I love how Disney reimagined and told this classic fairytale in their style.
