I am still in Kota Bharu in the Kelantan state of Malaysia. This state shares a border with Thailand. I’m always interested in visiting towns right on the borders, that is normally pretty interesting. There is a kampung (village) right on the border called Rantau Panjang. What’s really interesting here is that half of the town is in Thailand and the other half is in Malaysia. Separated by a river. So, we decided to visit this Malaysian kampung and explore around and see what’s life like right on the Malaysia Thailand border.
When you travel southeast Asia, you are going to cross probably quite a few borders. Mostly it is easy to cross border between countries in southeast Asia. But in these days, all of the borders are closed. Traveling southeast Asia is therefore not really possible at the moment. This makes it even more interesting to see what’s the border between Malaysia and Thailand looks like in these days.

I’m from Pattani Thailand. I drive many times crossing that border to Rantau Panjang. We go shopping and eating halal KFC. Often driving further to Kota Bharu. I speak my local dialect with the people there. I regard them all my relatives, easy for me to blend with unlike I was in other parts of Thailand. I feel strange there

West Malaysia used to be in the same time zone with Thailand. In 1982, years after Sabah & Sarawak formed Malaysia the goverment decided to follow East Malaysia time zone and moved it one hour earlier.

6:25 Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 split the lands owned by Malay (majority muslim) states and the lands were given to Siam (now known as Thailand) by the British. That is why Thailand southern borders have high population of muslim.
It is the other way round. Kelantan was given to British by the Siam government.

Southern Thai are mostly Buddhist, only 4 provinces have Muslim majority. I’m Muslim I can confirm it, and I love it here. No matter what we believe if we Thai we patriotic 😂

Next to Tumpat.. Another border town, they have Wat (Thai Buddhist temple) with a very big statue, Kampung at the beach, try also their rice with soup aka Nasi sup.
Oops..(edited) Not so far from Kota Bharu...Try White House (a cafe) their kaya toast and half boil egg or even Nasi tumpang, recommended.
I propose for the best lunch, try Hoover restaurant. Kelantan also famous with ayam kampung. The best.

1) The river IS the border.
2) Few decades ago, both nationality can use the river. But now for better border control Malaysia forbid use of boats on the river. The river is not exclusively Thailand.
3) People of southern Thai are actually Malay people, it was Malay sultanates, up north to the Phuket and Ko Samui region. In early 19th century, Thai conquer the sultanates in fierce battles. In late 19th century Thai force use of Thai language and brutally punish opposition's.
4) Malay language and Islam is not strange in Thailand. I can go to Phuket and survive knowing only Malay. Almoat all staffs of 7-Eleven can still speak some Malay. Even some of the airport officials (immigrations and custom) communicated with me in Malay.

I’m phuket people. Phuket originally had a mix of Hokkien Chinese and Malay language. Food, Culture and Architecture are closer to Malaysia morethan Thailand.
in kelantan there are mixed between thai and malay. in my observation person who can speak english is originally from malaysia and people that cannot speak english at all mainly from thailand. the school system in Malaysia we need to learn english for 11 years thats why majority malaysian can speak atleat basic english to communicate. for example the old man you have met by the river, he is from malaysia so he knows how to communicate in english and also the men at the tshirt printing factory, he is definitely from malaysia.
Thai people in Thailand learns English since even before the first grade through the first degree Im not sure about the 3 particular provinces in the South they seem to have their own rule and own schooling system. but well the country has never been colonized. not be able to speak English isnt effect their life much all the transcript are Thai so many Thai remain bad in English, most Thai English teacher are also cant speak proper English only those who pay enough attention in school and do some English pratice are able to speak, mostly those in tourism industry and abroad students the rest .....
I m Chinese, basically we will speak more than 4 languages for example, like me I can speak mandarin, Hakka, Malay, a little Hokkien and a little bit English.😂😂
and for me i think Malay is easier to learn than English😂😂

@@lucca_lee ....the Philippines were colonized by Spain yet they speak very well English. Indonesia was colonized by Dutch, yet they don't speak Dutch and they don't speak English. If Malaysia was colonized by French, I knew everyone will speak French. Im malaysian, I learnt French in 6 months without taking any courses. Perfect opportunity because I was in France and was forced to learn the language to survive. It surprises me country like Thailand which depends heavily on tourism yet English is not widely spoken.
I was there 3 weeks ago. The shops are crowded with people during Hari Raya though the border is close.
I was there in Rantau Panjang during my childhood days back in the 60's, you can imagine how its like living in those day without electricity and the town that you walk about was almost like a ' cowboy' town, really you can even hear gunshot across the border there was lots of illegal activities back then firearms was easily obtain cross the border,but that was 60years ago now it safer when they build up wire mesh to prevent illegal migrant and smuggling anyway your tour a lot reminded me of the past i enjoy watching love every minutes of it,do continue and enjoy with your adventure and remember to stay safe and good health

The last time I visited Rantau Panjang was 15 years ago. My recent visit to Kelantan didn't allow me go there because I was told about the changes happened since covid 19 outbreak. When I watched your video, those advice was indeed true. For many years Malaysians love to visit Rantau Panjang because of the cheap goods produced by Thais such as football jerseys, rice, crocodile brand cookware, bedsheets or toto where locals call them and some them buy Thai rice. Great, I enjoy watching this episode.

@@KenAbroad They used to be an indenpendent Malay Sultanate known as Sultanate of Pattani Darussalam established in 1457 before conqured by Siam or nowaday Thailand in 1785 and annexed in 1902. After that, Pattani was divided and fully integrated into the rest of Thailand. Islamic kingdom of Patani is thought to have been around the mid-13th century CE with an alternative theory stated that Patani kingdom (Islamic) was founded in the 14th century with history extend into the 2th Century BC as Hindu-Buddha settlement.
@@KenAbroad They are historically and culturally connected with Malaysian East Coast state of Kelantan and Pattani, especially Kelantan sometime called the brother and sibling state of Pattani. Even the current Royal Family of Kelantan came from Pattani royal lineage.

Wat Machimmaram is an impressive Thai Buddhist Temple with a giant sitting Buddha statue located in the Tumpat district of Kelantan, about 20 km from Kota Bharu.
I suggest you, to visit Tumpat district, I think the long region trip to Tumpat only takes an hour and 30 minutes.

Exactly if you know about malaysia it is not really surprising that most of malaysian can speak english well although some have limited vocabulary and not really good pronounciation but we at least can speak the basic one...it is just that malaysia is not really a famous country...that's why foreigner think malaysian is friendly because we can communicate with them...so i'm proud to be Malaysian...hehe😁

Rantau panjang is the Malaysian town whereas sungai kolok is in Thailand.
There is a train going straight to Bangkok with stopover in hatyai where you can go back to Malaysia again via padang besar, Perlis.
I used this route to explore southern Thailand provinces.

The wall you see on the Thai side is the flood barrier. Every year during the monsoon season (Nov - Jan) this area is some of the worst area affected by the flood.
I'm from Sungai Golok, Thailand the opposite side of Rantau Panjang. I could tell that it's the border of my hometown from the cover of the video. 😊

Steve wore our national team jersey 👍Never thought you'll reach Rantau Panjang, the border town between Thailand n Malaysia. Its even cheaper than Kota Bharu. From Kota Bharu, you'll have to take a bus to Kuala Besut or Merang town for you to go to the lovely islands off Terengganu.
The only time I went to Rantau Panjang was a day after our general election in 2018, on the way to Hat Yai running from people talking about politics 😂😂😂
And I'm glad you tried Barbican. It's an Arabic alcohol-free malt. It's a bit expensive. I prefer the one in bottles. 😅

The southeastern part of Thailand used to be the Malay Muslim state of Pattani. During the Anglo-Thai Bangkok Treaty the states of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan & Trengganu were given by Thailand to the British. Only Pattani remained. The Malays of Pattani waged an independence war against Thailand. But since the 1950s the war had become a guerilla war by a small group of separatists.

What the man, Sayed meant was that in Southern Thailand they have separatis groups who go against the government because they want autonomy and be independent/ separate muslim state.

Southern Thailand is ethnically Malay, and the Malays of that region are indigenous [ native ].
Old Malay kingdoms such Pattani and Langkasuka had existed for centuries in that region before they were invaded and became part of Siam.
The Malays of southern Thailand therefore consider themselves, and rightly so, as an occupied people and their homeland as being occupied by the Thais.
So they are NOT separatists.
They are independence fighters.

It’s been a while since I visited Rantau Panjang. The river is Sungai Golok (Golok River) & across it is Narathiwat in Thailand. There’s a duty free shopping zone at Rantau Panjang. Btw, great video Ken! Danke!
The wall actually to prevent water from flood going into Thailand side every flood's season which is usually at the end of the year to early month of the next year...
Barbican is said to be a style of carbonated malt drink from Middle East. A lot of fruity flavour to choose from.
Since Rantau Panjang is close to Thailand, the weather is hotter than other places in Malaysia. You should try lokcing and Rantau Panjang Ice Cream during the hot sunny day. And also Pulut ayam (sticky rice with fried chicken).
Very interesting, way off the beaten track. See only friendly people. I think the seafood was a tiger prawn, much larger than a standard prawn and certainly bigger than shrimp. I like them with crispy batter on them.
That is probably just a slightly larger prawn...
The T - shirt printing process is called silkscreen printing, the square box is a fine net with the numbers ( or Names) n u scrape the printing ink onto the cloth n then his buddy uses a hair dryer to dry the paint. Cheers

Many years ago together with my friends, I took a sampan across the river without our Malaysian passport or border pass. Once across, we took a few minute motorbike ride to a small town nearby for a fee. After, exploring we came back across the river, the same way we went. Then, the town of Rantau Panjang had rows and rows of shops selling Thai handicrafts and souvenirs. Basically, Rantau Panjang was a destination to shop for inexpensive handicrafts and goods.

For your info bro, the villages near the border are mainly Muslim population & they speak Malay rather than Thai. You can find mosques within 2km of each other although Thailand is predominantly Buddhist. And also the fact that you're in the Yala, Pattani province it's mainly Muslim population.
Ah yes, I remember the locals around that river telling me once that they used to just swim across that river whenever they wanted to go into Thailand without going through immigration. At some points along the river, you could just walk across the river to reach the other country. For some, the river is actually a divider between family members as the river separated two Malay regions, one under Malaysia, the other under Thailand.

You could try to go sebatic island on sabah, is belong to malaysia and indonesia inside one island, and sarawak place call ba' kelalan with longbawan just a sign with one petrol staff incharge on the location.

Hi Ken! I'm Din here, saw you waiting for the bus to get back to KB yesterday. I can say you only explored 5% of Rantau Panjang, sorry. But here we're famous with a variety of street foods with mixed Thai-Malay touch, as well as like the jersey's seller said; the copy stuffs eg. jerseys, bags, jeans, toys, utensils & etc. You just need to walk a little bit at the junction of signage "This is Rantau Panjang" then you will see an ocean of stall/small shop sellers. If you had spare time not knowing where to go, please come again. I will show you around, from a local perspective. Enjoy being part of Kelantanese culture for the time being!

4:28 the border is actually right in the middle of the river..the Thai side built the wall as part for flood mitigation project as the East Coast is prone to flooding during the monsoon season
5:11 the timezone difference is due to Peninsula Malaysia time was adjusted to standardize with East Malaysia back in 1980s. Previously the Peninsular was GMT+7.30.
those jerseys are mostly made in Thailand and yes, most of them are sold in Malaysia-Thailand border areas such as Rantau Panjang and Padang Besar, in west coast Malaysia
Hi Ken.. I would propose for you to go to Pantai Cinta Berahi (about 15/20 minutes from Kota Bharu) where they make Very big and traditional kites.. A songket (textile) traditional hand weave. A batik painting as well.

We were there in 1992. Got denied entry as some bloke from Penang at our hotel loaned us his car for a few days. So they made us go back. Nice drive from Penang.

I have crossed the border at Sungai Kolok/Rantau Panjang multiple times as I live on the Thai side.
Rantau Panjang is a town.. A border town to be exact. Most goods sold there are copies of the originals almost all are made in Thailand..

Sooner RP will upgrade to 'Daerah' (District) I think, due for their tourist attraction. Amazing, a lot of changes in this area and
indeed the area is well maintained and VERY clean now!
Actually if you look back to the history, Southern Thailand is apart of Malay land. That's why if you go to some of the South Thai district, such as Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, you will find that there are more similar culture between Malaysia East Coast such as Kelantan and Terengganu people with the South Thai people. The food also not much different. You can watch Mark Wiens channel for food hunting at South Thai region.

you have to go to another place which is the Malaysia / Thailand border next to Tumpat district which is the base of the grave. from there you can follow the road along the border .. a beautiful view

the wall at Golok site is a flood mitigation wall because golok and rantau panjang always hit by flood every year.
The barb wires were installed in March to avoid people crossing to and fro across the river, due to covid19. Barbican is imported drink from middle east. Thats why its expensive.
