- During our Malaysia roadtrip we found roadside street food in Malaysian village with nothing but friendly locals - Let’s check out Malaysian street food in a village
Welcome to episode 73 of my trip all around Malaysia. If you haven’t seen the previous episodes you can watch them here:
➡️ • Traveling Malaysia - A...
We are currently on our Malaysia roadtrip and what I really like to do is to stop at random roadside street food stalls to check out their Malaysian street food. Its always super interesting to see their offers and how much it costs in these Malaysian villages. We stopped in a small town called Bekok, in the Johor state in Malaysia. A state that a haven’t visited while traveling Malaysia yet. Beside nice Malaysian street food I found nothing but super friendly locals there. Everyone is always so welcoming towards us foreigners here, especially in these small villages. Amazing!
When you travel southeast Asia, make sure to stop at small villages like this. The experiences there are totally different than travelling southeast Asia just in the popular big cities. If you want to get to know the real side of the countries, travel off the beaten path.
What’s your favorite street food? Let me know in the comments ⬇️

Bekok pronounce like ' Bur (like burger, reduce the 'r') cook'.
keladi = Yum... fried Yum
Keledek is sweet potatoes, and Keladi is yams. The purple water is made from the yam actually 👍
Ken , the 'tauhu begedil' is not a burger. It's actually chicken and potato filling wrapped in tofu and then dip fried.
Are you gonna visit perhentian islands Anytime soon?
meow.... meow 😀😀😘😘😘😚😚😚.... so friendly Malaysians 😀😀🙂🙂🙂
Ken those girls were full of giggles. They loved chatting with you as you did with them. Love following your journey. You are a gentleman. Keep safe and healthy.
"Isn't it nice to do your living in the world where a guy from a small village in Germany can walk around a village in the other side of the world in Malaysia and meet nothing but friendly people" Ken Abroad.
Ken, you maybe from a small village in Germany but you have a very big heart. An absolutely decent human being.
That part made me a bit teary eyed.
A most beautiful sentiment.
I feel touch too
1:48 The girl is FUNNNY 😂 "cat cat...meow"
I was smiling by myself watching this video because of those people friendliness. 👍
Wow, people in bekok so cheerful. The makcik very cute. When Ken asked. How many people live here. Makcik look at sky and start thinking. Hahaha. This video made me feel Happy .
Indeed..🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This video makes me feel happy too
Chee Lee..she was counting without any answer came out from the sky..hahaha
Air mata kucing literally translated as cat tears but its actually longan..the fruit itself when you look at it resemblance cat eyes for us thats why its name as mata kucing ( cat eyes )

I think this video truly captures the kampung vibes. Laid back, friendly kampung folks. Lovely smiles, good, affordable food and i could genuinely feel the warmth of the people and how much you enjoyed yourself. Hope you’re not feeling too homesick!
No I'm not feeling homesick, I love being here 😊
This takes me back to when I was young and I woke up one morning deciding I was going to drive around America. I did it with no plan. I just drove randomly around America. I also loved stopping in small towns in the middle of nowhere. Even though I'm American, often the locals' reaction was "You're from California? What are you doing here??" A lot of great memories. "Kampung Boy" is a great name for a band.
Sounds like great memories
Yep... Kampung Boy. is a nice name for a Band. All SE Asian country especially Malaysia, Sngapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand will know you if you use Kampung Boy as your. band name.
Kampung Boy from Germany goes wandering in a kampung in Malaysia.....What a story...
.Ok Nasi Ambang ...Ken tries something new finally .. LOL .... Keladi is Yam. ..Kudos..Malay proficiency getting better... NICE!!! "Tiada Masalah" ... Ken's new meme.... Mersing .... The gateway to Tioman island ..Stay safe, happy exploring..
What a coincidence, I also had nasi ambeng today for lunch, a typical Javanese dish during jamuan ... 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Keladi is Taro not Yam...
@@zimasham3891 malaysia selalu sebut yam

Wow from kenya, greetings to Africa ✌
Next time kindly try nasi lemak ayam berempah.. U will loved it.. 😊😊
Woke up to a random recommendation by UA-cam. This video made me smiled all the way through.
Glad it made you smile 😊
The vendor girl's english is pretty decent indeed, considering the kampung location of Bekok town...Big Shoutout to her ✌️👍😍
Wow so nice of you, buying from so many vendors instead of buying from just one, this is very Malay way of shopping, buying from more people ensure more business is supported, good job man 👍👍👍
Your Malay is getting better dude. Good job! Keep it up, you will understand Malay in no time.
Tip : Try listening to Malay radio station. That was how I improved my English. By listening to English radio, time to time.
Yeke selalu blackout 😂
English tv is easier kot!

@@flyingfox3766 pernah baca komen dia kat channel lain dulu. Dia kata memang selalu blackout. 😂

Keladi is Yam
Keledek is sweet potato in English
But in some English speakers do say sweet potato as yam... Better word to say keladi in English is taro
I love the honesty of your videos. Also your positive attitude. Super.
Thank you paul 😊
intresthing... people of malaysia..so frendly...
It seems everybody in Malaysia can speak simple english.. its easy for foreigners to travel within Malaysia.
Yeah ,its kind of strange to find a foreigner in a small town as one will expect they spend mostly in big city and nice to know that you able to communicate with local so well, enjoy and have a safe journey
#teamabroad 🇲🇾 ❤️ 🇩🇪 .
Malay language is like second South East Asia language after English language, because most people in Malaysia 🇲🇾 , Singapore 🇸🇬 , Indonesia 🇮🇩 , Brunei 🇧🇳 , South of Thailand 🇹🇭 & some place in Combodia 🇰🇭 can speak Malay.
Even many of shop owners in Mecca, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 & Istanbul, Turkey 🇹🇷 can speak little bit of Malay language, because most Malaysian 🇲🇾 & Indonesian 🇮🇩 like to travel there.
Malay is official language of Malaysia. English is as well and now everybody wants to
learn and speak English because it is the Common language. It makes sense in business as well. I love the Dragon fruit and durian, missing them...
Malay is first language for melayu&malaysia...inggeris is second...because in malaysia&sarawak school them study BM/BAHASA MELAYU first
Fadzil hashim Malaysia and indon is different language okey?

14:40: nasi ambeng a unique dish from the javanese comunnity in Malaysia
You are truly a kampung boy Ken! Respect! 👏👍🤗
I totally agreed that living in a kampung is in fact very interesting...no traffic jam, lot of fresh air and kampung people are nice n friendly...
Even though l'm a Malaysian, this is the first time l come across " nasi ambeng" ( rice plus noodles )
Very interesting...😂😂
Keladi is yam, keledek is sweet potato...so that makcik ( we addressed aunties as makcik n uncles as pakcik in the Malay language ) told you that the food were fried yams n fried sweet potatoes.
Wow, your Malay has improved tremendously..well done Ken !!!
It's my first time being so early. Everything is sedap to you Ken. Mata kuching drink. You should try it.
Tauhu berlauk is fried firm tofu with some chicken/beef/fish inside. Usually it's not spicy.
Nasi ambeng usually a combination of rice, fried noodle, tofu dishes, coconut dishes and some chicken/beef/fish. It's a traditional food for Javanese society in Johor. Usually it's spicy🌶
wakakakakaaa.. sakit perut gelak gelagat si ken ni... 😂🤣
🤩Foods taste better when shared🤩
The more we give, the more blessings we will receive 🥂🌞
This episode is hilarious especially the communication with the food and drink traders. I was laughing 😂 so hard.
like the super sedap for chicken and fried banana 😂
Ken : what is kucing?
the girl : meowww
me : XDDDDDDD
Asam means sour in Malay, and Asam Boi means sour plum(usually dried).
Mata Kucing (literally 'Cat Eye' in Malay) is a type of fruit, called Longan (from Cantonese lùhng-ngáahn 龍眼, literally 'Dragon Eye').
Keladi means Yam, Keledek means Sweet Potato.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longan
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yam_(vegetable)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_potato
The girl with air mata kucing was so cute. Miow! 😆
We usually share one pack of nasi ambeng with 2-3 people. It is a grand dish which is usually served during special occasions like Ramadan, weddings. The standard practice is few people to sit around the platter on a mat eating together, but nowadays we may find it packed at pasar malam (night market) or road side like what you did.
The girl how selling that foods so pretty with sweet smile😘😘
Gatal

6:15 Keladi is yam.. keladi goreng is fried yam. Keledek is sweet potato. Keledek goreng is fried sweet potato 😆😆😆
And purple Keladi water is purple yam water
Nasi ambeng - special dish originated frm Johor. Basically its started when there is gathering or any special occasion when they serve a big plate dish mainly white rice, chicken soy sauce or sweet sour, fried coconut, dried fish, dried vegetables and noodles. Mix it together and take it away by the visitor.
Glad you choose Nasi Ambeng.. Johor's Special Dish.. i love it.
Kampung life is certainly interesting , so much so, that you can probably stay there for a while Ken! 😁
Karipap means curry puff.
Pisang goreng means banana fritter.
Yam means keladi.
Nasi ambeng is rice mix with noodle, crispy fried chicken and some other condiments.
Gladly you went to tiny village and met a lot of friendly people from different background checks live together.. that's so diversity.
I love both western food and kampung food....
Love Malaysia ❤❤❤❤from nepal
Loving the content. It's nice to see you have a good time here during this pandemic. Anyway stay safe 🤗
Thank you 😊
That’s the beauty of Malay kampung people. Amazing friendliness and politeness.
you had another form of Keladi before, Ken! remember the upside down Yam ice cream that you in front of the school? 😁
Didnt know yam = keladi 😅
@@KenAbroad next to the 'keladi' is "keledek" which is sweet potato.
At roadside stalls offering pisang goreng, you will usually find keladi and keledek.
At Chinese street stall, you will also find "fried ti-kuih ", a sticky sweet glutinous rice cake sandwiched between keladi (yam) and keledek (sweet potato) fried with batter too. Have fun learning. 👍

Nasi ambeng is javanese influenced cuisine. There's a large javanese community in Johor, Selangor and southern Perak...

Real people, real food, n good living
@Ken Abroad - Usually you will see this fried snacks & drinks in Malaysia :
1. Karipap Ayam, Kentang, Sardin (chicken, potato, sardine curry puff)
2. Pelbagai jenis Pisang Goreng 'abu, tanduk, awak (variety of banana fritters 'abu, horn, you'). Keladi Goreng (fried taro), Keledek Goreng (fried sweet potato), Sukun Goreng (fried breadfruit), Cekodok Pisang (Banana balls), Cucur Udang (shrimp balls), Cucur Ikan Bilis (anchovy balls)
3. Pelbagai jenis minuman 'Teh Tarik Etc, Teh Hijau, Mata Kucing, Oren, Jagung, Mangga, Asam Boi (variety of drinks 'etc pulled tea, green tea, cats eye 'Euphoria malaiense (Sapindaceae)' - because the fruit flesh & seed looks like cats eye), orange, corn, mango, sour plum)
This reminded me when I backpack Europe a short while visiting friends when I am the only Asian and everyone else around me was Caucasians 😂😂😂
I think you have grown to like coconut bun a lot! 😁
By the way.
Mata kucing = longan (also means dragon Eye in Cantonese)
Keladi = yam
Keledek = sweet potato
And I always love those deep fried roots.
Really happy that the locals are nice to you. They don't see a Caucasian and they are equally excited like you.
#teamabroad
Mata kucing a type of fruIt from thailand called Longan or lychee.. sold in supermarket in canned.. we call mata(eyes) kucing (cat) cos the fruit is round shape n inside the fruit black seed, resembling cat eye...
@@niktajuddin2012 laichee and longan are totally two different species of fruits.

you realize how tall ken is when he's about to enter under canopy lol

sideways stall such so nice for small village... very nice..
very so friendly people there... excellent...
nasi ambeng is rice +fried noodle, it is javanese origin, the story behind it is during the hard days, poeple does not have money to buy chiken so they use the fried noodle as a replacement for ciken/fish/meat....that was my late father told me....
now it is traditional food found on java people area like johor/perak/selangor....nasi+fried noodle+soysoschicken+coconutflake.....feels n taste like no others
It's a simple but fun video Ken! Your malay language is getting better day by day. Good job Ken. Glad that you like Nasi Ambeng (nasi + mee + ayam).
The combination of rice, chicken, fried noodles, some vegetables plus spicy coconut shreds are called Nasi Ambeng.. Its a delicacy normally found only in Johor. You oughtta go travel to other parts of Johor as the districts normally have their own signature food.
Mee Bandung in Muar
Nasi Beriyani & satay in Batu Pahat
Kacang pol in Johor Bahru
Hi Ken, I'm a new subscriber and enjoying yr vdos. You have a great attitude, open mind/heart and genuineness. Love yr smiling eyes. Enjoy yr travels in Malaysia. It's a great country, beautiful land with friendly people, wonderful culture and fantastic food. Take care, stay safe and have fun!

Nasi ambeng = rice, fried noodle, normally soy sauced chicken, veggies and dried coconut is traditional food of javanese community in johor and some parts in selangor.
Keladi = yam (the ice cream you ate), air mata kucing = cats eye drink is made of longan
aduh pagi2 kena nasi ambeng sedap beb, kt johor pon kne pndai cari port kalo jmpe
@@MrLifeIsAwesomeForUs yeah not that easy to make, but very hard to find
Keladi is Yam, like the ice cream (upside down) that you had before
FYI, tahu begedil is dried tofu stuffed with chicken/beef and/or mashed potatoes mix with some seasoning n herbs dipped in egg and fried... The tahu begedil is usually not spicy, but you have to dip in sambal kicap (a dip made with soy sauce, birds eye chilli n some have garlic in it) which is the spicy 3lement of the dish....
Ken .. you are super cute and funny ... I laughed out so loud .. you asked something else but the girl at the pisang stall said something else and you thought she said something else .. ha ha ha .. the rice is called nasi ambang a special dish just for johor .. and the fruit juice 'air mata kucing' .. air is water and mata is eyes and kucing is cat ... mata kucing is a fruit which is longan fruit .. and keladi is yam in english and keledek is sweet potatoe ... anyway you are getting more confident speaking in malay now and that is super awesome .. can't wait to see your tomorrow's vlog because I am sure I will have a good laugh again and this is good to drive away all my stress for the day .. super like you 👍😊👍
when she said to you, " Datang lagi" that means pls come again.

The second stall sell keladi or yam and keledek or sweet potatos. Both were fried similar to fried banana. The purple drink is yam flavor, the same like the ice cream you ate in previous video.
Woooo .the shirt roaming in south of Malaysia! Proud of it!
Next brown food to Nasi Ambang actually called Tauhu Bergedil. It's a fried tofu with meat inside either chicken or beef. Really delicious. Come with soy sauce dipping sauce.

nasi ambeng (rice + mee ) its a traditoanal java dish..
D fried noodles wrapped in banana leaf looks appetizing.
Next time u saw a shop selling air mata kucing please try. It's a fruit called longan. Keladi and keledek is sweet potatoes. Keladi is yam. Keledek is probably tapioca
Tapioca / cassava = ubi kayu
Yam = keladi
Sweet potato = keledek
That rice, mee, chicken meal is called Nasi Ambeng. It is Jawanese dish and quite popular in Johor state. I really like nasi ambeng. The usual component of the dish are White Rice, Fried Noodles, Chicken in SoySauce, Coconut shredded (Serunding), Salted fish. It is best to eat all the components together after mixing well.
Welcome to Johor and you are very much welcome to visit Kluang which located exactly center of Johor state. If you happen to visit Kluang, do visit the coffee shop at railway station. I guarantee that you will enjoy the food and the classic environment there.
