There's just something so nice about repairing a poorly loco, and have it run on the railway with a fellow classmate or another engine it would have worked alongside with

I have a little book of British steam locomotives in 1958 and the J83 is in there.
Origin: North British Railway Introduced: 1900 Driving Wheel: 4'6" Purpose: Light Freight and passenger shunting at Waverley Station. Power Classification: 2F. They were at former North British sheds in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas so it's no surprise that OO Bill already has one. In 1958 the numbered series was 68442-68481 with gaps due to scrapping with the Hornby engine shown here as one of the later built ones.

Another great repair video Bill! Enjoyed the view of Mallard in the siding along with the other shed at 14:50 👍

I must say that your layout appears more complete and great looking every time you show it. Such a basic repair, makes you wonder about whoever took it apart the first time. Still, at least it gave you the opportunity to finesse it and show it running nicely. 😊

Really appreciate these repair videos, they have recently helped me with a badly running jinty and some non working lights on a Class 158 👍🏻

A simple rebuild for you Bill, I do like the tower on the the hill, looks great and a bit different to to the housing estates which most modelers try to make.

Hi Bill ,, I got 1 of these J83's the other day along with a battle of britain spitfire and a couple of carriages ,, 1 being a green southern railways coach with guards compartment and a morone lner carriage with guards compartment too.
The spitfire only needed a clean up and runs like it is brand new and these rarely are quiet but this one is quiet compared to the other spitfires i have.
When it came to getting the J83 going it needed a good thorough pull down and cleaning.
There were also brass bearings on the axles and these were actually stuck hard on to the axles and all 6 were seized solid.
I give them a good swoosh of wd40 contact cleaner and with a small grab with the long nose pliers they all come free.
They all made a small crack sound when they freed up so im presuming maybe that someone may have glued the bearings together onto the axles possibly.
The axles and bearings freed up good but wanted to check if they were glued or not so I ended up pulling the wheels of the one side of the axles and pulled the bearing off to check the inner side of the bearings and even took pics with a magnifier app i have on my phone and I could only see a small bit of conjealed grease or oil but no superglue remnants anywhere and the axles themselves looked brand new and shiny. Maybe the crack noise was just the bearings freeing up from not being run for over 40 years. Anyhow its all back together and runs quietly too just like the spitfire does. The only trouble was i had to get them silly copper wipers pickups that hook into the plastic base plate underframe that screws to the chassis was a bit a pain to sort but was all good in the end.
Yet another good and informative video. Thankyou.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

This may be a stupid question but how did you immediately know that the wheel set was on upside down and back to front?

The oiling points (wee bits that stick up on the rods at each axle) were pointing down not up.

I got a hornby b17 that uses a ringfield motor and the motor releases allot of smoke when turned on is that fixable or is the motor done for buying a new one from britain would take a extremely long time cause i live overseas

    • @oobill
      @oobill  11 місяців тому

It probably just needs a good clean. It's the dirt that smokes not the motor itself.
