Great to watch you work on models and repairing them so carefully and then see the model run on your layout, I am sure the young lad will be chuffed as I am. thank you
Managed to open my own Pendolino and remove the DCC chips and add blanking plates after watching this video. Mine is now whizzing around my DC layout 👍
Another great job Bill. The strange thing is that the Pendolino doesn't look out of place on your layout, even though it's not running under the wires.
It’s quite common to find a second DCC chip in a multiple unit. Take your choice as to whether it’s to provide extra functionality or it’s a cost saver for the manufacturer as they don’t pay to wire the unit throughout all the coaches and you have to buy a second chip from them. Good job getting it back to working Bill.
Some take three or more! The Japanese makes like to put the motor in one of the centre coaches. Adding DCC to a Kato set usually requires a decoder for the motor, an accessory decoder in each cab coach to control directional lighting, and an extra accessory decoder for each coach (including the cabs) if you want to fit and control interior lighting. Though AFAIK it's rare to see more than two in OO.
An interesting feature with the Alstom set is that the coach livery is back to front OOTB. You need to either swap couplings or switch the carriage top round on the non pantograph coach. On the real thing the narrow bands on the coach windows join. On this its narrow line to thick line.
The two chips are quite common on these DCC ready units with dummy cars, its so you can control the lights on both ends. I sometimes wish they'd use some kind of couplers or some kind of wireless technology that could carry the signal along the train, but then again with prices the way they are it would probably make the model cost more than just buying two chips in the first place. Interesting to see this since I've recently pulled apart my Class 395 Javelin which is causing an endless stream of issues. Its a very similar design inside except the Javelin has a visible interior so the wires are disguised better.
Good work! As for the number of decoder chips - the latest Hornby APT needs three 21 pin chips - one at each end for the lights and one in the motor car in the middle.
I was doing the Walter White screaming from the car meme as I watched this, "BILLLLL! THERE'S ANOTHER DECODER IN THE TRAILING CAR! BILLLLLL!" Knew you'd catch it though haha.
Hi Bill ,, I totally understand about not pulling quite good runners apart but with only tiny fluffage as theres no point. I recently saved some $$ and was on the hunt for some Virgin hst 125 carriages for my birthday from last week as I previoulsly bought a 4 car virgin hst set around a year ago then got 1 extra dining car only 40k's from here and only $35 and it was in near perfect in condition so that meant i had 3 carriages. On that trip to get my dining carriage i also spotted a cort guitar bag standing next to a power pole along the side the road (I thought trains first , guitar bag second haha) so called in and picked it up on the way back home and didnt even check inside the bag until i got home. I gets home opened the bag and pulled out this 3/4 size cort acoustic guitar that had hardly even been played. I ordered a set of ernie ball super slinkys and it plays like a champion😁😁😁.. Anyhoo i spotted a hst 125 virgin set here in oz on EBay & was a bid auction so i thort I'll cap my self at 140 160 max bid and do the bidding at the last minute like is the best time to bid , so I sets an alarm and when i checked it it was already at 165 and ended up selling for $276.00 There was no way in heck i was paying any where near that much for it , so at the end of the auction i noticed the "see more" under the finishing price & here was a middle carriage for £11.50 I thought oohhh wow so i looks on the guys other items and in amonst all of his items was another hst car then found a dummy virgin hstand them the virgin hst power car and got the lot of it all less than £55 with the conversion to aussie dollars was around $125 plus $35 postage. He also had a flying triang flying scotsman and tender for 28 pounds so i added that to the cart and bought it too so big hsppymbirthday to me haha. So all up was around 83 pounds and $14.50 postage to here in Australia & Guess what ,, it only took 6 days to get from the UK to here in oz. 6 days to go 16,872 kilometres yet takes 15 days to get a parcel to here sydney which is only 161 k's haha. Anyhoo the description of the power car says works but motor squeels says works and the others are in good to great condition. So gets it runs it and hep squeels likge a pig stuck in a fence. All i did was drop the loco end out of the chassis , put litterally 2 drops of oil on it and it runs like a cracker. So chuffed to say the least. Long winded comment here bit thanks for your fixit videos they are awesome and I love the addition of the endoscope as we can see what you are doing. Cheers from John in Australia.
The N-gauge version of the Azuma by Kato has 3 chips (and thier all Kato properiety chips) 1 for the front car 1 for the back and 1 for the motorcar; bit annoying but untill they come with some sort of coupling system that can share power/instructions for dcc/dc we are stuck with stuff like that
The n scale Kato ALC-42 Charger has provision for an interior light kit that I suspect can be changed out for one of their proprietary dcc light chip in addition to the standard dcc decoder for motor and headlights.
I must admit Bill, you need a large layout to run either the full 9 or 11 coach sets which the Pendolinos run as, also the First Barbie ScotRail looks more interesting to me!
Bill, Watching this with interest. As you know I have one on which I burnt out the main card and removed it thinking I would be able to purchase a new one. That proved difficult during Covid and at this point I am not sure how to proceed. Can you suggest a shop who would post to Canada? If I were to send it to you it might cost me around $30 and probably the same on the way back. It is a smooth runner as you can see and seems a shame to leave it in a drawer
Morning Bill, so would that mean ignoring any connection to that card in the powered car and only have pickup wires and lights? Sounds simple enough, I will have a look at it. Thanks very much Bill
Well done Bill, I can imagine Brodies face when its running round the track in his house. Top effort.👏👏
Great to watch you work on models and repairing them so carefully and then see the model run on your layout, I am sure the young lad will be chuffed as I am. thank you
Great work bill 👏 👍 😊 I'm sure brody 👌 will love his working pendalino 😮 keep up the good work bill 👍
No doubt you have made the wee lads day Bill, well done

Well done Bill just made a young boy very happy good on ya
Nice Investigation Bill, and a Fab Result - Thanks for Showing us that Brodie & Enjoy your Pendolino Train set 👍🏻
Another great job Bill. The strange thing is that the Pendolino doesn't look out of place on your layout, even though it's not running under the wires.
The joys of a well-crafted layout. In the Netherlands, most lines are electrified, but most modellers leave them out so you can see the trains better!

Great to see a maestro edging into the unknown!
Another excellent running session with the repaired train and your Scotrail sets. Nice touch to show FS simmering in the siding too.

Another great repair well done
Hi Bill, really enjoying your videos and they've gave me the incentive to get off my back side and get a few of my older locos repaired 👍

Nice one Bill! I would love a pendolino 👍
Hi bill check the other driving car as this might have a dcc decoder fitted as well

I have a pendolino just like this one, recently serviced it and it still runs well after about a deacde

Unless you want to run it DCC you could remove the boards and just wire it for DC and directional lighting.
Morning Bill, so would that mean ignoring any connection to that card in the powered car and only have pickup wires and lights? Sounds simple enough, I will have a look at it. Thanks very much Bill
1 have one of them it was a gift but the curves are to sharp on my laying for successful running
Haha me too. Who built this layout I wonder..... Oh that would be me...😢
looks a decent model to be fair ...do you only model in DC or do yuo have DCC locos too
Where could I find the wiring diagram for this?
What do you do with the DCC Chips?
Return them with the loco to the owner.
