I will always be partial to the L1011. I flew for TWA 1976 to 1990, survived the Carl Icahn strike of 1986/87, went on to fly for another US international flag carrier until my retirement. The L1011 remains over all the other aircrafts I was FAA certified on my favorite including the B747, B767, A330, B777.
I'm a huge fan of the L-1011s and the DC-10s, I used to fly on them a lot during the 80s and early 90s between Portugal and Brazil. Unfortunately, I never got to fly on the MD-11, but it still one of my favourite airliners! Sadly they're all disappearing. Fantastic video Simon, as always!
Aircrafts. Masterpieces of Engineering. Just to see the Rudder move, man, thats awesome. The complex mechanics behind that. Truly a marvel of modern Technologie.
Rare indeed, what a show stopper; the crowd at MAN knew. Thanks for sharing. Never flew md11 but Air Afrique dc10 always looked majestic on approach. Must be the simplicity in the design and that imposing power effect from third engine.
I have been on one of these World Airways MD11s in 2005 when our plane which was taking us home from Barbados (BIWI flight) was broken! They cobbled a crew together to get us home! Not the most luxurious flight home from Honeymoon, but got us there in one piece!
Well, what I see that is RARE is the people standing around filming right next to the planes taking off!! How lucky!! I would be with you!!! lol Love your vids, Simon...they are such great quality. Thank so much...liked and subbed.
11-11 is the farewell flight for the KLM md-11 pax version. It will go for a flight from and to Amsterdam. So sad to see them go. At least we still have the martinair cargo...
brilliant simon! i was there today you might of seen me on that mound i was wearing a grey hoodie, i saw you change places shortly after to that newish big mud mound great catch!
Beauties :) I remember from childhood at home watching planes fly over my home (60-80 kms from airport), domestic flights were silent but DC-10's heading HEL-NRT were a bit noisy at full throttle still gaining speed and altitude, at good weather the tail engine was well visible :)
Man I miss seeing and hearing DC10's and L1011's so much!..you rarely see them in the USA now unless you catch a FedEx MD11 somewhere and I don't think you can even find an L1011 operating anywhere in the states these days-they're gone! It was my favorite bird to fly in & every time I traveled I would deliberately choose only Delta flights using L1011 equipment so I could still fly in one until they finally parked them forever..DC10&L1011's to me, truly are the most beautiful birds in the sky!
I was there that day flying out to Magaluf (was a Saturday morning) and seen the Luthansa Cargo MD11. Was sat in lounge with 2 hour delay to our Thomas Cook 757 which had engine maintenance delays :}
Wow thats rare!! I am a manchester spotter myself and well the Lufthansa MD-11F is rare to spot in the day and the World Airways MD-11 is just rare on its own in manchester! To spot them both at the same time would proberbly be one of the luckiest catches for any aviatior!
Nice video man! Yes, they are really some awesome aircrafts. And they sound great as well! As you wrote Simon, they are rare. Last December I saw a DC-10-30/ER on OTP (Bucharest) from "Omni Air International". But it was so damn foggy so my photo was crap. Pity - cuz' they are cool.
These are the sharpest images I've seen on UA-cam for sure. And your night coverage of the Bangladesh plane feels like you are sitting in an airport lounge watching it all ... ensconced! Amazing production value here. I didn't look yet on the details above, but I'm wondering what camera you use. Cheers!
@@Habu2 Well this was a long time ago (11-12 years). I filmed both MD-11s landing on 23R, and then moved over to the threshold of 05L to film them taking off towards me. These videos are now all unlisted on my channel.
I'm appreciating your excellent vidography. I assume you are using a really nice camera (to it's full potential) and I imagine you've done this professionally. It is certainly of professional quality.
MD-11 & DC10 both land faster than any other aircraft due to the rear elevators. All the aircraft seem to land identical, by the looks of it a pretty windy day.
Excelente video!, tus videos son los mejores!, lo felicito siga asi Simon, aqui se pueden ver en plena accion a los Spotters, tremenda ubicacion en la que se encuentran.
Amazingly beautiful. I´m counting the days now to bring my appliance to an end to become a pilot for Lufthansa. Next Summer, after my graduation, I will have to pass the second assessment test out of two. Who knows, where I will sit just in three years then... If I would have a billion Euro I would give it entirely away if they would let me fulfill my dream to fly for Lufthansa. I would do anything for it!
Zaid Zarifur Rahman I read one of my pilots' amplified checklists, and on one of the first pages it says the DC-10 is not a smooth landing aircraft. And boy was that correct.
Lovely video. I would have bet that Manchester airport would have had one MD-11 in a day, but two? WOW! Did they have a sale on landing fees? Do you know why they came in? Unforcast headwinds? I love Manchester (Old Trafford to be exact) but would have not guessed they would have been able to take an MD-11. Again, lovely video. If you're able to tell us, I'd love to hear why they routed there, or if anyone else knows why.
@GBAPCLAN ... No, no it isn't. The World Airways one was carrying passengers anyway. The rarity was in seeing two MD-11s within 5 minutes of eachother at Manchester.
How old is this video? I wasn't aware World was still around, and even less with an MD-11. Most airlines are dumping it. Too bad. Great airplane, but high maintenance. Notice on the LH take off, how the ailerons are turned into the wind to keep the right wing down. Excellent textbook crosswind take off technique. For some odd reason this model airplane was unforgiving, more so than others, for allowing the upwind wing to be lifted, especially on the landing. Great video, and great spot!!!
Awesome video Simon. Any idea what they were doing there? It doesn't seem like they were on the ground that long. I miss seeing MD-11's. I used to play with the FedEx styrofoam MD's when I was a kid, and told my parents I would fly a real one someday. Too bad they never got rid of their terrible reputation.
Was that a turbulent day? I've never been to that spot at Manchester...only to the airport pub but that's crap now the railing is there!! Never seen an MD11 there!
to everyone who is asking why they are so rare its because they have a third turbine located on the tail and they also dont carry passengers just frieght.
This "argument" about which airframe is more capable as a freighter is simple economical one. The reason so many 747's are freighters now is because the airframes have reached a maximum of flying hours for commercial passengers, and since the 747 airframe has been around a lot more that the Douglas airframes and others, they make the best choice when it comes to freight hauling. Trivia Question: What does a retired 707-320 freighter smell like inside?
Not cargo, personnel. I can tell you for a fact that the US military had a contract with them to move people into the middle east theater I know, because I was on it twice in 2005 & 2007. Just saying
Everyonce in awhile World airways have done sub service trips into Manchester from canada, I've done a few of them. A millitary flt would never go into manchester. only militrary flt would be into Mildenhall with World. Also we have several md-11 cargo for the military

In an ideal world, every pilot would have their career published.
Been on that MD-11 many times during my military days. World (ATA) was our rotator in and out of the AOR.
...same here
Me too

You really do make the simple business of watching planes take off and land a absolute joy to behold. Well done Sir with regards to the fine quality.

AWESOME videos and PERFECT sound.. yet again. Very professional.
I remember seeing Lufthansa's MD-11Fs back in 2011. Amazing Video!
Thanks Mike
I love MD-11's. Can't explain why, I just do.
same here
3rd engine possibly? That gets a lot of people’s attention.
Absolutely love your videos!
Thank you!
Rare indeed, what a show stopper; the crowd at MAN knew.
Thanks for sharing. Never flew md11 but Air Afrique dc10 always looked majestic on approach. Must be the simplicity in the design and that imposing power effect from third engine.
that third engine looks like it's ready to pop off lol
Such a pretty wing sweep. The Dc-10, MD-11 and L-1011 all had the sweetest wings.
I have been on one of these World Airways MD11s in 2005 when our plane which was taking us home from Barbados (BIWI flight) was broken! They cobbled a crew together to get us home! Not the most luxurious flight home from Honeymoon, but got us there in one piece!
You can clearly see him holding right aileron into the stiff right crosswind. Thanks for showing the detail.
Love it! That MD-11 had me nervous the whole time, first with that bounced landing and then with that near tail-strike! Love your vids! Thanks..
I have been watching your vids for some years now Simon and as usual very well done.
Well, what I see that is RARE is the people standing around filming right next to the planes taking off!! How lucky!! I would be with you!!! lol Love your vids, Simon...they are such great quality. Thank so much...liked and subbed.
Thank you vegasjill21!
Simon Lowe You are very welcome! :)
Quality! -As are all of your videos! I just love the classic looking jets, especially three-holers!
Thanks for the vid! I used to fly on MD-11 and DC10 with Varig Airlines in 94-95 years.
Love those planes... Quite only used for freight today :/
Your video's keep getting better all the time ...thanks ...Quentin
Caught a World Airways at KPHX a few years back. Great footage you have here, the last of a dieing breed.
Excellent video as usual! The World MD was doing the Air Transat run to Toronto and she flew over my house. Luckily there was some clear sky
11-11 is the farewell flight for the KLM md-11 pax version. It will go for a flight from and to Amsterdam. So sad to see them go. At least we still have the martinair cargo...
Superb work & upload! Thanks!!
I think there is a fence e.t.c, but they're standing on a huge mound so you can't see it. The UK has very similar restrictions.
Gosh, I really want to catch that Lufthansa Cargo here at KDTW, Awesome Video! Love the MD-11
Fantastic!!! Very very good video! I love it! Beautiful MD-11! Thank you my friend! ;-)

such a wonderful aircraft and great filming
well done simon!
MD11 one of the most beautiful airplanes flying.
All them other spotts filming too! Great video Simon.
Windy weather in Manchester I'm guessing. I love the MD-11 and thankyou for posting :)
MD-11s perform the best landings and takeoffs as they have to flare so much :)
Quite a frequent visitor at Manston, Kent

@1970sPlaneSpotter So you've found the joys of rolling shutter I see? Well, your fine camera work made me question if it was CMOS or CCD anyway :)

Excellent enjoyed all of it as I always do!!!
@seconds101 its because they have a third turbine located on the tail and they also dont carry passengers just frieght.
Great filming, loved the shot at 2:00 of the two MD-11s. Would I be right in thinking this wasn't filmed with your XH-A1?
Amazing video!! Thank you so much for the upload!
Nice video man!

Fantastic video showing my favorite plane
love this aircraft. was really happy i got to see one at tampa last week
Simon Thanks for This vídeo of 2 MD-11’s
This has to be the most mature comment section in all of UA-cam, no fighting or cursing
Brilliant video, that N270WA is ex Finnair MD11, great to see her, greets from Finland.

Wasn't 05L ???

I heard a message tone!, It was a nice shot and the quality though, also the landing vertical angle rate from the MD-11s :D

In Miami you do... Mostly MD-11s though, not as much DC-10s.
i've seen this airplane in atlanta before. its even better looking in person.
Saw 3 in Oakland from FedEx a coupe, weeks ago
que buen video como todos los que has tomado, felicitaciones, y abusando un poco tendras algun video de aterrizaje o despegue de airbus 380 gracias.
The mounds where this was filmed from have been flattened to make way for a carpark. Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful Eagle!!!!
These were lovely aircraft...
I want to make my next in-flight video on a MD11, does anyone know which airline flies them anymore?
