Emo has changed a lot, but not just in fashion. The actual sound of emo music. I think the reason it’s hard for Gerard to see that is because MCR was honestly the biggest influence of that change. He can’t see the change because he IS the change.
I agree. I understand why people don't want to classify them as emo, because the genre wasn't originally that way. But for example, 80's mental vs. contemporary metal are COMPLETELY different. Genres change and that's okay.

I think they are more “overworked” that MCR is very clearly a cornerstone band in modern emo yet they (GW) push so hard to be classified as anything but. Just accept that you’re heavily associated with 2000s emo and move on.

Funny story; back in my early 20’s MCR had just released their 2nd album, and I was always a punk girl, mainly stuck in my 90’s punk, early influences of punk from 70’s early 80’s but majority ruled when it came to Horror Punk. I liked MCR a lot because of the lyrics and the vastness of the creative process put into it. I attended an underground punk show one night, it was a pretty hardcore atmosphere, serious punks, battle jackets girls with shaved heads, guys with Mohawks glued into liberty spikes, duct taped chucks metal chains connecting a nose ring to an earring made out of safety pins, more or less I was in my glory. I remember having a old beat up jacket with a shit ton of buttons and patches, one pin was a clearly marked MCR button. One of the bands that just got done with a set came over to the bar, struck up a convo with the front guy, and he laughed and pointed at my MCR pin, he says “ I can’t believe you were brave enough to walk in here with that pin on ur jacket!”.. I looked down noticed the pin and said why? Not punk rock enough? Since when has punk rock ever fit into a stereotype? Why don’t you humor me and explain what punk rock means to you, and if ur answer intrigues me, I may actually reward your ignorance with some knowledge and insight.. and if ur lucky I might even let u buy me a fucking beer dirtbag.. lol!! Long story short, I left with his number and never spoke to him again. They wer from Kentucky playing a show in my area in Pittsburgh. Placing anything especially music into a mold is nothing short of ignorance
The thing is MCR isn’t or ever really was emo. They just attracted that crowd. A few sad songs doesn’t really mean emo.

Try being a metal fan. I actually stopped being friends with two people over their constant arguing over if band X was metal core or djent or whatever bullshit genre. I’m middle aged and listened to metal all my life and can’t begin to tell you what all those dumbass categories refer to. I have two categories “badass” and “lame”.

Everyone calls me emo because my nails are black and I wear a lot of metal and my hair is dark red (I mean red not orange I dyed it) and it's always in my face and I wear black a lot but in reality I just like dressing that way I dress and looking how I want because my parents are fine with how I am and I am lucky for that because many people do not have parents who let them dress different so I am gonna do it before I can't do anything

Their first three albums may have darker subject matter, but it doesn't make them emo or any other specified sub-genre because, in a sense, that's not how they work. They take a more artistic approach. They don't just write songs that fit a specific genre (like how a country musician would write country songs), they write stories and tell them through songs so the songs are written in a way that fits the story (sorry, it's hard to explain).
Like... Bullets-Love, Cheers, TBP, and DD are all concept albums; each one more or less has a story to it and thus the album itself is the completed work, not any individual song. So judging an MCR song on its own is like judging a small section of a painting on its own or a single chapter in a book on its own. Sure, a selection of chapters/close ups from an author's/painter's works may read/look similar, but they aren't representative of the whole work and can't define the painter's/author's career. So in the case of MCR, none of their full, completed works are emo, therefore they aren't emo.
Yep emo used to refer to things such as post-punk or post-rock and nowadays even math-rock. MCR should be more considered a rock band or maybe alternative would be acceptable too.

MCR are a heavy rock band. Period. The term “emo” was created to market bands to a wider range of people. Kids trying to be cool would reject the idea of being “rock” fans, for a variety of reasons and adopt the emo label instead not realizing they’re one and the same.
Yea if anything they typical music to what was considered emo was more metalcore pretty often. MCR is more post-hardcore and alternative rock just generally. Emocore is a completely different genre

@@danic2514 Yeah I've always seen them in more of an alt light, like look at Linkin Park, similar situation with lyrics, but a lot of what was being sung could fall under the "emo emotion tree", Chester's vocals alone implies (to me anyway) the opposite though. I grew up with these bands, I still find it so odd people see MCR as emo. I guess I can get it, but feels wrong to me. As you said, Emocore is a completely diff genre for sure.

Honestly, from what I know, emo comes from a connection to sadness in a way that is expressed through outward appearance and attitude. Clothes and makeup are added to it. I like wearing darker colors and makeup, and see beauty in cryptic or unconventional things. I also still find beauty with color. The abscense of color is just as beautiful as color itself. Black, white, gray, they are just as expressive as a rainbow. It might just be a phase, but I'm glad I had it. I feel powerful, intimidating, and beautiful. So whatever I am, I kind of like it.

a lot of us who were growing up around this time call ourselves emo now, but he was right at the time.
emo was like this myspace aesthetic and a lot of it felt hugely commercial. It simultaneously felt kind of exclusionary but also like a kind of poser identity. I didn’t know the term mall goth at the time but it felt like that.
Now time has passed, it’s not much a trend anymore, we can look back to our adolescence and draw what was authentic and meaningful from it, and i think that’s what people see emo as now.

My Chemical Romance is so much more than that... They're a band with substance and a reputation that lasts way beyond the same old "handsome young man with eye-covering haircut screaming how life is unfair" trope, have you ever wandered why My Chemical Romance is the only band that, to this very day, still feels GENUINE when compared to the rest of "emo" bands of its time? (Fall out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Thirty Seconds to Mars) like all those bands you see them nowadays and they have either turned into completely different bands, changed their style drastically to the point of being unrecognizable, or outright sold out. But not MCR, even their latest song "The Foundations of Decay" feels like something new yet you feel their essence, you listen to it and you goddamn know it's MCR, not just some random "emo" song of the bunch. They were never defined by a trend or a so-called phase unlike most of the bands during those times which definitely jumped on the train of what was hot at the moment and just went with it until it was no longer cool, and when times changed so did they, but MCR never changed what they are, because their unique style and success was not defined by what was considered "emo".

Just to make your point that MCR isn't emo, you don't have to insult other bands, you know. Especially not for changing their sounds somewhere down the line, or accusing them of "jumping on bandwagons"....
And just like MCR can sound slightly different per album, all the rest of those bands can do the same. No way that anyone can say that Bullets sounds like Black Parade or that they all sound like Danger Days. But yes MCR is still unique, all those bands are unique and are their own. Any fans of those bands can tell you exactly the same things about their band as you said about MCR.
Also I've realized the term "emo" is so flimsy that you can never get everyone to agree on what is or isn't emo, but Fall Out Boy, and Panic! aren't they pop punk? 30 Seconds isn't emo either.... feels like you're just wanting to praise MCR and kick those others down.

If they want to, kind of genre hop, or do their own thing regardless of genre label, then wtf, let them...? NGL, it used to make me so fvcking mad that people would question why I or anyone would listen to this "emo shit" 😔
It was NEVER emo in my opinion and its hard not to think that maybe MCR might have lost some potential fans because of some people's misrepresentation of this band maybe stopped some from even listening and just took the opinions as the be all end all.
In my day 'Emo' was portrayed as someone who wore heavy black make-up, possibly dyed their hair black, wore all black cloths, self harmed but for pleasure and was pretty much altogether down on themselves and the world it was an overall presences, they didn't smile or if they did their face might crack, they talked in a flat low monotone, they even walked at a slower pace than most of us.
Please let me be clear, THIS IS NOT MY OPINION OF BEING EMO, but rather this was the label given to anyone who did the things I mentioned above.

Emo as a genre is just an affinity of darker aesthetic, theatrical performance, and a general "against the grain" mindset. And if you think about it, the meaning of words can change over time, so even if emo used to mean something else, MCR has shaped a newer, modern version of the word emo.

As a past emo girl, I did listen to MCR but never catalogued it as “emo”. Emo was SWS, ADTR, etc. which made us feel a certain melancholy. MCR did have some emo songs like “ghost of you”, but almost every other song was upbeat.

I think emo has changed and will always change just like music as a whole. I always believed and took that "emo" or other things like being punk or a metalhead was having a group of people who stand up against the oppressive nature of society and are called rejects or the victims of bullying. I've listen to different rock music my whole life and I've always considered it a safe place away from the world that has always been accepting. And Gerard my not see his band as emo but MCR always had that feeling of being an outcast and finding somewhere safe. That's what I love about the rock community, and the hairstyles and outfits for emo is definitely just a small piece of real emo.

Emo bands during that time (Taking Back Sunday, The Saddest Landscape, Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day, Pg.99) definitely *might* share similarities with MCR but that’s because emo is associated closely with the hardcore/indie/punk scene. If you really break it down and compare MCR to Still Life (probably the most “emo” band out there), you can see obvious differences in song structure and lyrics. Being emo isn’t everything, people over exaggerate it for no reason when it’s literally just indie-hardcore with poetic personal lyrics.
MCR played the same scene as TBS and was influenced by Saves The Day. All of those bands were playing shows together in the early 2000s and cross pollinating. That's how MCR got stuck getting called emo in the first place.
Emo, back then, was all about self harm and suicide, which is the exact opposite of what MCR was trying to promote. Nowadays it’s more about the fashion and promoting self-care. I really think they suit the modern definition of emo.

Okay but, if you're a real emo fan you have to accept that the subgenres exist and are also allowed to be called emo. Technically both Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring are subgenre of Indie Rock. They are both Midwest Emo, same as Death Cab for Cutie, for example. Hehe XD

I grew up listening to the Get Up Kids and that was always what I defined as emo. MCR wasn’t that, but I’ve come to appreciate them over the years, they stood the test of time and that’s what matters in my book ❤

My Chemical Romance are the closest thing to emo you can get without being accepted by balding gatekeepers who act like there is only 1 Kinsella, and it ain't Tim.

I thought EMO was a state of mind in the late 90s - early 2000s EMO was more than just a look EMO was something you felt inside and the music that spoke to you in a way to let you know you weren’t alone personally I never dressed “EMO” and I am a fan of my chemical romance but I feel like this guy is just playing a character because the real EMO crowd knows it’s something you have to live through not just the clothes you wear

This is old. He’s talking about what he grew up on in the 90s Emo scene. He was referring to the 2000s emo. Which is what I grew up on. And now I see “scene/emo” kids and I say the same thing. It’s not about the music. There is no music it’s about skinny jeans and hair. Same shit. The 2000s, though saw a short revival in hardcore punk, even at Warped tour before Emo and Scene bands totally took over. But Warped in 2004-2006 had a whole diff vibe then 2010. I’m glad I was front and center at Taking Back Sunday. Best band at Warped, and it was special for ME bc that was MY first Emo band I “discovered”. So it’s def a generational thing.
