    As a budding machinist/toolmaker/lathesman under the wing of my father in his manufacturing shop, I have to say I am truly inspired by your workmanship. My heart skipped a beat when you installed those step-down casters and relished in their glory at 4:35. Your reaction is the cutest damn thing. I feel your passion for the trade; it's absolutely infectious. SUB'D :)

    Hi April,
    Great build. That stand should serve you well. I noticed a thermostat on the wall. You might want to build a removable cover to keep dust out of the workings while you're turning.

    Great video. I've been turning for about 5 years and have always promised to build myself a decent cabinet to hold my tools. I finally stopped turning about a week ago and have knuckled down to making my cabinet. Your upload has given me some fresh ideas so many thanks.

    April, I just found your most informative postings while searching You-Tube this weekend. Your practical and clever solutions are great. I've been doing remodeling for over 30 years and recently many Habitat for Humanity efforts. Yet I am learning a lot from watching your down-to-Earth approaches. Having raised 2 in the Chicagoland area, I encouraged them to be resourceful. You are a model for many women to follow their passions, no matter what. I've subscribed to your You-Tube postings and look forward to future ones. Your detailed plans, material listings are very helpful. Thank you. John Lorens

    I am so pleased to see a young lady , not only interested in, but excelling in this area. Reminds me of my daughter. I taught her to be self sufficient and not be afraid to tackle anything. She has been changing her own oil since she was a teenager. She now remodels homes, builds her own crafts and all while raising 4 children as a single mom. April, your skill and enthusiaism really stand out. I am subscribing to your channel. Keep the videos coming!

    Might want to consider putting something over the front of your stand to keep the chips out of the shelves and grinder. I have a open stand too and it turns into a huge catch all for dust and debris.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 років тому +3

      Yeah we'll see, I might end up adding a door but I would prefer to have it open so I figured I would leave it as an open cabinet to start and see what I think about it. I can always make mods if the dusts creates too much of a problem in the shelves or grinder.

    Hi April,
    You know there’s many a man who think they can do anything but this bench and the design details would blow them away, you done a fantastic job, especially building it so strong because once its built you will want this bench cabinet to be ultimately super strong!
    I love the thinking outside the box of fixing the grinder actually on the bench used for your intended work. How many times have you seen a second thought grinder on the other side of the shop and after turning it gets buried and you are forever digging it out to make the tiniest little touch-up to your tools?
    You probably already know what a dirty and WET job turning can be especially when initial hogging out a large green limb for a bowl the water it unbelievably turned into steam as you work!

    Having your sharpener that close and easily accessible should make keeping your tools sharpened very convenient, however I'm wondering if you shouldn't put a door or panel of some sort in front to be sure the lathe dust and shavings don't get into your sharpener's water bath or on the wheel?

      I agree - the mixer lift is a great touch! I'd suggest that you use the area on the right for tools that don't dangle, so they won't rattle around every chance they get. Maybe with spring clips or magnets or turnbuttons to hold them in place.

    Since that is a wet grinder, something you might think about is putting some kind of cover over it. When you are turning wood, you will get all kinds of wood chips and dust in the water tank. Other than that, you are a very talented young lady. Great project. Thanks for sharing.

    • @SteveisTall
      @SteveisTall 7 років тому +16

      Fair idea Jerry but if you store stone wheels partially in water they go out of balance. Way better to empty the water when not in use.

    • @victorjbarker
      @victorjbarker 7 років тому +3

      that makes little difference on a slow speed wheel..

    • @anthonysellick3520
      @anthonysellick3520 6 років тому

      Yes. This is very good advice. The juices from some combinations of timber will actually harm the stone, particularly some west African timbers. (speaking from bitter experience with a tormek grinder identical to yours. actually I have two.) It is also a good idea as steve james has said to empty the water between days in the shop. Lastly and most importantly..... As soon as you can find someone to make it for you, replace the chromed shaft in that grinder with a stainless steel one (somebody with a metal lathe can reliably copy it for you) Otherwise water will eventually get in, rust the shaft seizing the wheel to it and eventually break the wheel. This I know from VERY bitter experience. It has cost me two wheels and as you no doubt know, they are not cheap.When you get a slightly bigger lathe (and you will) you can put two sand bags in those bottom shelves. With lathes the heavier the better. Good luck and keep the magic rolling!Ps. there is a diamond dresser available for those grinders, if not for the triton get one for the tormek it will fit (they are identical (I assume triton bought the rights) and use it periodically. I noticed your stone is fractionally out of round. Not a problem yet but it will get worse.

    • @a0flj0
      @a0flj0 5 років тому

      @victorjbarker Makes little difference on the wheel itself, but a wobbly stone might make a difference on the tools you sharpen.

    That is by far one of the best ideas for a lathe stand that I've seen so far. I am most sincerely impressed. If more people thought about what they were doing as much as you do, the world wouldn't suck so much. Thanks for having a brain and giving us the plans for this. I'll be scaling it up a bit as the machine I have is a bit larger. I love the grinder pull out though. That was the clincher for me. I might add a linear actuator so I don't have to manually raise it but that's all I'd change.

I notice when you are driving screws in and other activities you often have your opposing hand in direct line of the other hand. You have to be careful for if you slip out of the screw head you can drive the tool piece into your hand or wrist....Hands and skin are soft and easily damaged.. You got a good sponsor adviser.The real thing is here that the design is not made from experience but of need.
    This project give a lot to think about just to keep the rumble wood chips out of your space your working in.
    A work in progress you will find out in the future. But he we all are here to learn is it not ;-)
    Good luck with your shop,the road is long, but nice to walk on.

    That is a really nice lathe stand and an AWESOME idea using the mixer brackets for the grinder, I already have ideas where to use those brackets elsewhere in my shop. I have read a lot of the comments and there are really good ideas and suggestions. The main suggestions are the safety ones, remove the rings, get a better dust mask, and use VERY good eye protection!!!!!!! I almost lost sight in my left eye from just wearing safety glasses when a chunk of wood came off of a bowl I was turning, Now I wear a heavy duty full face shield with built in respirator filters, uncomfortable yes and hot but better then going blind!!!!!!!!! one more quick suggestion, since your lathe is in the corner you will want to install plenty of light. I would hang a 4' light above the lathe and also mount a flexible light to shine on your work piece at different angles to see sanding scratches. I'm also a lot older then you and my eye sight is getting worse so I need more light but I would atleast use a flexible light

    The rule with work benches is the heavier the better. Doubling up is always worth it. Especially on something like a wood lathe where things can vibrate a lot. There is no substitute for sheer weight. Love the grinder attachment!

    That is awesome. I think I'm going to remake mine that moves too much. I love the idea of the grinder lift. Myself and my 2 teenage shop helpers love watching your videos. You help the 12 year girl realize that women can be great woodworkers. Also one tip on getting more turning blanks is a lot of saw mills will sell the cut offs as firewood. We have gotten a lot walnut and cherry blanks that are anywhere from a few inches to 18" cubes.

    Nice. That pull out thing seems to work really well. Will build something similar if (when) I get a lathe. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Those recessing brackets are totally awesome! I was just thinking about building a mechanism similar to those for some space saving features in my tiny shop. That's no on my amazon wish list. The table is a nice little build, my lathe is like the grand daddy of that little guy, about five and a half feet long, the table is a monster and I put in one gigantic storage drawer with heavy duty metal slides. It's not pretty, but it doesn't move either. I like those step down casters too!

    Nice build. I like how you make it functional with a few finishing touches; trim, exposed dado fills etc without making it a piece of fine furniture lol.
