Simple and cheap to build, I like it. Received my Penn State Turncrafter Commander 10 yesterday and bought my lumber this morning to build this. Actually using left over 4" casters, 2 swivel locking and 2 fixed. I too share a garage with the wife's van, but her van hasn't seen the garage since winter lol..
Very simple, nice, effective, and practical cart design. Plan to make a numbre of them for each of my bench-top tools (oscillating sander, band saw, drill press, scroll saw, jointer, planer, belt-disc sander, router table, grinder, and small CNC router.
I didn't even think of the cleaning aspect! Good point. I'm hoping to be able to go out into the driveway when the weather gets a little nicer. Then, I can just blow the shavings and sawdust away. Thanks, Sean!
That's great! I'm about to start doing a major shop overhaul and I'll be building several carts for my tools. Great videos! By the way, are you from the south? I live close to Houston myself.
My grandfather's old lathe is sitting in a box (unassembled with no instructions) in my shop....definitely going to come back to this one and hopefully get the inspiration to set it up soon :)
Glad it could be an inspiration for you! I am pleased that the whole cart didn’t cost more than $55, and the casters were $36 of that. Thanks for watching, Mike!
thank you for your time in sharing this video. I am just getting back into lathe work after 30 years ( back in wood shop class ) and looking forward to building this for my lathe I just ordered. This is just what I was looking for as starting on a budget. Subscribed.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I appreciate it! I’m very pleased with it. I’ve turned quite a few things since completing this cart and I think it will work just fine.
Bruce, I made a cart for my new thickness planer today. Super simple and only cost four 2x4s. I had some plywood that worked out ok. I didn’t get as fancy with the trim on the top but I will probably replace the top and then add the trim and drawer. Thanks for the idea!
Nice build! Pop those feet off the lathe and shoot four 2" lag screws into the top to lock down that lathe. Also, a great way to store a dust mask is with the inside facing down; keeps dust from collecting inside it. A short dowel with a tennis ball on the end (like a wig stand) works really well for this.
Good Job oaths build sir, I built a lathe cart a few weeks ago. I like the added drawer you made for yours. I will more than likely add a drawer to mine, looks easy enough and like you say, it don't take long and you have a bunch of extra parts and pieces that a drawer would be handy to have to put them all in. Enjoyed your video, looking forward to seeing more from your channel so you have a another new sub here sir. Thanks again and have a blessed week. Dale
Hey Bruce! Turned out good.simple is good.especially for shop stuff..you'll prolly cover that shelf with blanks in no time. Tool holder is a good idea too
Haha, I've messed up on height before, forgetting to take into account the castors. I feel your pain. Cart looks great, the edge banding is a nice touch
Thanks, Robin! It can be such a frustrating thing to mess something up so simple. Just glad I caught it at all. I thought the walnut added a lot of depth for the design of such a piece.
Hey Joe...thanks! I don't remember the final dimensions. I based it off of my Nova Comet ii that was building it to fit. The casters are 3.5", I believe. They're the heavy-duty, double locking type from Home Depot. I've had good success with those over the years.
Thank you! The stability is pretty good since I went with large, double locking casters. I’m sure you could attach it to the bench top. I’ve not done that and don’t have much issue with it moving. The only time I’m had it scoot around is when turning an 11” diameter blank on my 12” lathe. Ha ha. It was pushing the limits of what it could do.
Nice job! Did you think about bolting your lathe to the top instead of it just sitting on the rubber feet? Also, was there any problems with the lathe being on the cart that has casters while you were turning. Reason I ask these is because I have the same lathe and I like your simple design. Any input on both the pros and cons of your setup after using it a while would greatly be appreciated.
Hey Paul! I still use this cart now with the same lathe. I’ve not had any issue with it being on wheels. It might not be a bad idea to bolt it down. I’ve only had an issue with that when I’m pushing the limits of this small lathe. Overall, though, I really like it. I think I might put the tool holder on the back side instead of near the tail stock. That gets in the way a little.
If you end up really liking turning and say you like to turn bowls, the Nova Comet ii probably won’t be your forever. I had a 11.5” bowl blank on it the other day and it could barely handle it.
off by juuustt a foot . LOL. I am in process of planning to make a cart for my heat press but I thought that was too funny. I would be making the same mistakes I'm sure.
An American making something out of 2x4 - there's a surprise 🤣🤣 (They make EVERYTHING out of 2x4. Wondered if anyone has ever thought of adjusting the saw? 😊😊)
@@BruceAUlrich maybe you could make something out of 2x2 or 2x3 or do your lumber yards only have saws set to one size? Cheap good material is immaterial its ALWAYS 2x4 cheap or otherwise!

I made this video years ago & now, I have the whole garage. Ha ha. I still have my lathe on this cart. It has served me well. Happy turning!
Elegant simplicity! Good job, especially the cutie at the end..
Thanks so much!

That would be a good way to outfit your shop with a lot of stands.
Nice cart, Bruce! Being mobile makes it so much easier to clean behind it.
I didn't even think of the cleaning aspect! Good point. I'm hoping to be able to go out into the driveway when the weather gets a little nicer. Then, I can just blow the shavings and sawdust away. Thanks, Sean!
Simplicity at its best, this weekends project, thanks for sharing 🏴
Glad you found it useful! I'm still using this lathe and cart today.
simple and perfect for me ps my daughter helped me many times still talks about it years later thnx
Oh that’s great to hear!
Looks great, Bruce! Simple and utilitarian, but still has some style.
Thanks so much! I still use this even now, two years later and it works great!

Yep! I’m in central Mississippi!
@@BruceAUlrich awesome! I'd love to make it out that way some day if we can ever get through this quarantine.
Great looking cart Bruce. I love the walnut touches you added. It inspired me to add some things like that to my things.
Made by Mitch Ah, Cool! Glad I could inspire, Mitch! Thanks for telling me.

Very nice! Clean, simple lines, good proportions, looks great.
Thanks so much, Joe! I've been using it for a while now and it is still working quite well. I'm glad I put that drawer there.
Nice build Bruce! It seems to be very resistant 👌👌👌
Thank you! Yeah, it seems plenty sturdy. I’m really liking how everything needed for turning is all in one place.

Great video Bruce! I really liked the flow and dialogue. That cart looks nice and stout!

I do need to fasten that thing down.

Hey Dale! Thanks so much for he kind words! I’ve put out a lot of videos since this one so you might like some of those too. The drawer is very handy

Thanks, Joe! I’m sure you’re right about having blanks all over the place. Luckily, that bottom shelf can hold a lot.

“So I was off by just a... FOOT” haha I’ve totally done that.
YouCanMakeThisToo It’s a pain, isn’t it?
Nice job man, turned out awesome. "Off by just a foot," I laughed out loud haha. Better a foot too long than an inch too short though, right???
Oh, that’s for sure! Ha ha. It is still irritating when it happens.
beautiful but how do you find the stability? would it be attachable to the bench top?

Hi 👋🏻 I’m new to woodworking and just got a lathe. What is that pressured tool you used after gluing?
For whatever reason, I'm just now seeing this. Can you be more specific about the tool you were asking about?

@@BruceAUlrich Thank you for the quick reply. Iwill be making one similar to yours.
How did you secure the lathe to the bench top?
I actually did not secure mine. It was heavy enough that it doesn’t really move around.
where can I download the plans for this
I don’t have any plans for it. Sorry
How do you like the Nova lathe I saw one for sale locally
Hey DJ...I like it. It is a very capable lathe.
Nice I am looking for my first Lathe I am not sure what I want I think buy once cry once applies here

Of course, better a foot too long than a foot too short. Good job, i like it.
Ha ha. You’re right about that! I still had to cut one extra 2x4.
new lathe, in a while your wife will be like "stop making door nobs, we don't have that many doors" nice build
ha ha...I think you're right. The bowls and knobs will just be stacking up.

You’ve got to have some laughs so you don’t cry. Ha ha
Too bad that isnt live edge walnut banding, would have really set it off. #unnecessarywalnut
Ha ha. No kidding! Maybe next time I’ll do that.
