A a dutch guy I can approve. In all seriousness I think a bike is an excellent way of getting around. It let's you quickly enter an area and also carry more items such as collected water. You could also park it in a bush somewhere, trek the last mile by foot do your job and than leave the area quickly

@@DanDannyDanielleBob honestly, get a decent bike, and convert it to electric with a wheel hub motor, the motor itself ads negligible mass, and the battery can be in one of those battery bags that you can totally ditch if you have to to lose weight.

We keep a solar shower bag. Depending on the water situation you fill the bag and let it sit in the sun or you warm up some water and hang the bag and it has a hose connected. A hot shower can be a huge morale boost, I feel like a lot of people underestimate the importance of hygiene.
Also have a lot of extra dog food. He alerts to anything on the property and when left with the wife becomes obnoxiously vigilant. Can’t even begin to say how valuable a good dog can be as a deterrent from the standpoint of security.

When the shit hits the fan the guns come out and everyone is armed! A group of friends and I went to help during the Houston hurricane mess and let me tell you... Everyone was armed. But the cops were cool about it and weren't asking questions. This was before constitutional carry. The community did come together and help each other out which was great to see.

Thats just houston normally, if you see any adult who isn't a college kid they're carrying, almost without exception. I used to work in Houston and it surprised me when even though we had a no concealed carry policy most people carried up to 3 guns on them with many people having shotguns under their desks; one even hid an AK in our server room. Our customers even showed their guns to us and almost every one was concealed carrying. It's the culture there, especially amongst the nicer or more industrialized portions of the city, where citizens are preyed upon.

I live in Houston. Thanks for helping. We had peoplethat we did not even know just show up and help salvage flooded homes after Harvey. Several even brought food. That was actually a huge help because if you left to get food or supplies looters would steal your tools. It's a gut check for a middle class, white collar person to be ecstatic at the site of the Red Cross food truck dropping off hot meals and cold water.
We drove a boat down the main street into our subdivision the first two days after the National Guard pulled out of the area. That was about 4 or 5 days After Harvey. Even with the Guard in the area, looters had already snuck in. Days 3 and 4 we drove a SUV into the area, parked a few blocks away and waded in. It sucked. And yes, we were armed.

It can happen when you least expect it. Ten years ago in Connecticut, an early snow storm hit on Halloween. The leaves were still on the trees, the snow stuck and took down a hundred thousand trees. A good chunk of the state was without power, phone, internet or cell for a week, some for much more. ALL stores were closed. Sewer systems mere backing up. I drove 70 miles out into the country to find a working gas station. Most of the AM/FM and TV stations were off the air. One lone intercity gas station adjacent to a hospital had power but 3 hour lines and multiple gunshots over several days. It was hell and not really expected in Connecticut.

I live in the southeast on the coast and can't evacuate for hurricanes due to work. About 6 years ago we had a medium sized hurricane that left me without power for 4 days. It was an experiment I never wanted to conduct, but from that I found the ability to charge my phone and a battery operated fan were my most important practical needs. It also made me wary of generators, because plenty of people have generators, but they don't regularly run them, or they don't have enough gas for them. So come time when you need it they don't work, and if they do work, it's painfully obvious which house on the block has a generator because of the noise, so I've gone with a portable solar panel battery system and I'm pretty happy with. I had one particularly unsettling night sitting on my back porch eating a hot dog that was cooked over a Coleman stove with a rifle on my lap listening to gunshots all over the city. Over an hour I heard six or seven pistol shots, a couple of shotguns, and at least one supersonic rifle. I don't think there was a lot of looting or anything going on, but I think a lot of people were jittery. My house was fine besides a fence and some lawn work, but my parents house ended up with about $130,000 worth of damage, and they were out of the house for over a year while they dealt with the insurance company in the house was rebuilt/repaired. It's not sexy, but you really should go through your entire house and film everything in annoying detail. Even if you do it on your phone and save it to the cloud, that can be indispensable. The insurance company nitpicked my parents on every possible thing, and we even had to submit a photo from Thanksgiving that just happened to show the inside of their kitchen cabinets and that they weren't particle board. That sounds dumb and pedantic, but it was the difference between thousands of dollars in the estimate to replace the cabinets.

Also related to music, during my 4-day power outage hurricane extravaganza, a little AA battery operated AM/FM radio was worth its weight in gold. For the first 18 hours the radio stations basically did wall to wall call in shows so it was nice to have a sense of what was going on, and then for the next two and a half days just having some music on in the background was great and made me feel a little less crazy

im in the southeast as well, and back in 2019 when a hurricane hit my state, i had to use my trucks battery and a dc/ac inverter to run the refrigerator. it would last about 7 hours, and id let the freezer stay col the rest of the night. id swap the batteries out in my truck the next morning and run it to charge it. i now have a simple 18w solar panel with a charge controller, and a little 300 watt inverter to charge small stuff off a car/agm battery.

Just to continue the discussion, in this scenario of natural disaster it would also be a good idea to have some kind of home based repair supplies in addition to the car repairs you mentioned. And the knowledge to shut off gas, utilities etc. Tradesmen are in super short supply and overbooked in the weeks following a disaster. Think items like tarps, nails, plywood, basic plumbing and roofing. Can also be used to reinforce fencing and build makeshift signs or continue existing fencing to maintain some kind of recognizable (at this point though still easily breached and accessible) perimeter for your neighborhood.

Good work as usual. We put our solar arrays together with tamper resistant fasteners that require freaky wrenches to disassemble and we also intend to bring them inside for nights if things get 'ify'. Low energy living is a skill and requires a lot of habit changes. A surprising number of foods can be kept outside of a refrigerator that in these times of plenty most put in it. We have also found that our very well insulated (from the surface temps) root cellar stays at 45-60f all year round. A Survival Medicine Handbook and perhaps also the Ranger Medic Handbook are musts. Composting toilets work very well and don't stink the place up if done right. This may sound a bit over the top to some, but because we spent almost 6 years sailing on the Pacific we learned and used several hand and arm signals for when we couldn't hear one another. I can imagine situations were they might be useful even when we can hear one another.

I think Garand Thumb had a good concept for water collection. Scoop and Scoot with a dirty/clean bag system [filter between], so it can filter on the move and when you get back to shelter. I've heard you disdain Sawyer filters IIRC, which Garand Thumb uses in his setup instead of the filter that comes with the kit [mountain safety research] and was wondering what filter you would use for inline bag to bag gravity [or even pump] filtering?

    • @BrassFacts

I'll have my bag system out soon (video already done).
But the short of it is. Grav/inline is great for clean water. But we get a bit complacent since American mountain water is insanely clean. But as soon as you introduce a moderate amount of sediment, I vastly prefer a pump system as you can keep muscling through it, and continue to filter.

Hell, if I could only have two guns, I'd have two Glock 19's. Concealment is crucial in all the most likely scenarios, and a pistol is still better than nothing even in all the less likely ones.
I totally get that there are 2a reasons for encouraging everyone who's able to buy an AR-15 to go ahead and do so, and I 100% support that. At the same time, I'm also a huge believer in putting way more training time, ammo, and overall effort into concealed pistols than anything else.

If water is still available you can turn all the spouts on to a drip. And finding methods in summer of keeping the house cool. An abandoned house in summer can heat up and damage flooring quickly.

I know a lot of folks think when a natural disaster hits, it's go time to get their tac boogie commando fantasy on, but it's not. I lost my home to a hurricane back in 2003, and I was in the home when the hurricane hit. Spent the first three weeks living off of our hurricane kit, and supplies that me and a few others would drive a few counties over to grab and return back to hand out to our neighbors. (Thank god for owning a truck!) The first thing the ignorant will say about a natural disaster is looting does not happen. I can tell you they are wrong, as looting took place during the storm (When the eye was overhead) and after. Looting also happens at night, since they can pin point the people who are running gas generators. If you own a gennie, you better have the means to defend it. Running a gennie means you have a way to provide creature comforts and it means you have fuel. Another misconception is the whole lone wolf gimmick. The three neighbors we banded together with made security so much easier. My brother and I were the younins with a pick-up truck so we got elected to do supply runs, while the elder neighbors and our paraents looked out for the homes. (My dad was a combat Vietnam vet, he was in his element when shit went sideways) Do not count of local or state government to help you at all. We didn't see the national guard till week 3. Police/Sheriffs could not access many neighborhoods due to street conditions. You better be rocking a pewpew because your home just became the Alamo. Many things people over look such as are light discipline at night, self care/hygiene (I live in FL and a bad case of swamp ass and crotch rot will really crank the fubar meter to a 10), even knowing where to take a crap because Oregon Trail is 100% true when you have died from dysentery! Oh and folks, don't walk through water please... You have no idea how much shit, piss, toxic waste, oils, and other hazards are mixed into that standing water. Do yourself a favor, avoid standing water when you can. You don't want to come down with a skin fungus that makes your toes fall off or the wide spread cases of brain eating amoebas Florida has to deal with.
I can continue to write pages on this topic, as I have first hand experience and it was the reason why i pursued my two degrees in the field (Disaster management). The biggest component is to do the research and come up with plans. Not just one plan, have many well thought out plans. I know life won't follow your plan, but you will be able to use elements from those plans to formulate a working plan when shit does hit. Ten mins of planning can prevent 10 hours of scrambling with your head up your ass. Just remember, when everyone is suffering and miserable, you will see how fast humanity can turn on each other.

How to build and design water systems the list goes on. I want to talk about Health, hydration, soft self defense skills, and transportation.
In this type you need your health, I feel that people should be able to walk around, fight, and labor when needed. I have labored a good portion of my life. It is never easy till you are used too it. Having weights, doing squats, and walking. Will help you be able to labor, walk, and fight if needs be.
Transportation, getting from point a too point b. But you do not have the fuel to do so. A bicycle, and boat. Will be very helpful. Each person is different I for one live in a higher elevation area for my township. With 2 ponds near by. Even when it has flooded in my town. It does not flood in my area.
DRINK WATER! Just owning a water bottle with a way to purify the water is important. Most hikers use the water cheap water bottles you get when you buy water. They put a filter on the end of it. And drink water pretty much right from the river, pissed in and all.
I also think keeping up with soft skills really makes things easier in your day too day even with this type of situation. Altruism is a thing. The people who broke into the home looking for food, situation. Could have solved their problem with talking to the neighborhood. Trading labor for food.

I'll add my opinion to the conversation, I think the best way to store water is a ton of jerry cans (plastic ones are preferable), it's definitely not the cheapest method, but it gives you a ton of redundancy, allows you to easily share water to friends/family/neighbors, and allows you to throw them all in a vehicle and go refill them wherever your nearest source of water may be, and if need be bring back home to purify. Let me know if you guys have any other thoughts on what the best way to setup a water system is. I also would pair this with a custom rack that would allow you to swap jerry cans into a gravity feed/foot pump system while still giving you a decent system volume to tap into so you're not having to swap cans constantly.
