Yes-the distortion is one of the reasons I haven’t made an attic window yet-plus most attic windows have a hideously large “window frame” which distracts from the panel. This is how I am going to do my attic window. Thank you.
Wow, what a great tutorial! Clear cut, easy to follow and relate to my own projects. Nothing drives me crazier than having to listen to a 20 minute video tutorial for something that could have been demonstrated and done in less than 10 minutes. Thank you, I'll be checking out your channel for sure!
This window scene is just gorgeous. I would love to have one. Thank you so much for the video. I really like the way you did the window panes and the way about taking the 1/2 inch off. Makes a lot of since.
Love this video! You made it much clearer then other window panel videos I have watched. Is there any chance you have this written as a pattern we can access? I am bad at quilt math and would love to know how much fabric to buy and have the sizes written down when I go to shop!
This is the best attic window tutorial I have ever seen! Makes so much sense now!!! So glad I got to meet you and your husband this week and found your channel!!
I took a class for this and the instructor said “Oh you can never get it all to match”. I was very dissatisfied, but I took it home, took some of it apart and cut off some and resewed it. It’s better, but not as close as I would like. Thanks you so much for this. No more classes at that place. I could’ve don’t that bad on my own.
Sorry you had a bad experience. I don’t believe I’ve seen it done this way before. It was my husband’s idea taking out the amount we put in and it worked 😀 Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the instructions to "take out what you put in" . Working on a snowman window panel. I live that it is not distorted. At first I thought his hat wasn't looking right and I had cut it wrong. So on my design wall,, I laid in what I had cut out and it was right. Now that it is sewn it is looking right. THANKS!!!!
Thank you so much for the great tutorial. I just finished a beautiful attic windows for this fall. I wish I could send it to you. You have been very inspiring! Thank you again
I love your tutorial of the attic window, makes so much sense by trimming your panel so it does not look distorted. I see the frame is 1 1/2" and how wide would the sashing be ? 1"?
Thank you for a fantastic tutorial and thank you so much for the advice re cutting extra off the blocks- this is something I wanted to do and would have cut it wrong had I not seen this.. I want to make my 2.5 inches wide so would I need to cut .625 of an inch from the 3 sides ?
Looks beautiful! If I do one using this technique, because I'm just beginning to be more adventurous with my quilting, would I need to also remove a half inch from subsequent rows, to keep the pattern of the panel from spreading? I don't think k I heard that part in the video. And does the half inch removal also account for the black sashing? If I have an inch and a half frame on one side and bottom and a oneninch sashing on the other side would I need to remove 3/4inch from the panel sections?
Wendy, I'm finally getting ready to cut the extra material on each individual panel in order for the final product to not look wonky...you are the only video out there that addresses this glaring problem!!! Kudos to you. Anyway, as I see it, when I cut 1/2" off each side that intersects a window, it looks like the middle panel is cut on both sides, since there is an intersection on each side of the middle panel. Is this correct? If it is correct, do you cut 1/2" off the outside panels so all panels have the same width? Thanks for your help.
Hey Annette, You are correct, you would cut off both sides of the middle. It is not necessary to cut the outside pieces because they will still match up on the outside edges. Let me know how it goes!
@@TheBrokenNeedle Thanks for your response. Color me dense, but if I don't cut the outside pieces, the two middle panels will not be as wide as the outer panels. Is that correct? If that's correct, will the finished piece be compromised?
@@annettesweeney4444 in a technical sense you are correct but it is not necessary if you want to cut the outside you can, but we wanted to cut as little as possible off our panel. It’s not noticeable that they are slightly bigger.
I love this technique. Does the rule of removing 1/2 inch around the sides that connect to a corner work for any panel? I have a haunted house panel, and I want to apply this technique to your panel. Thanks in advance. And thanks for this video!
Hi! Do you take a half inch off the bottom of the bottom blocks too? Or just the three intersecting points? Basically just where the picture would be affected?
You could do that by appliqué but it would not be an actual pieced attic window. I think it would take more time and depending on your fabric choices your panel could show through the lighter fabric and keeping your panes straight might be tricky ☺️
Buenas tardes, me ha encantado está explicación fácil de entender, ya estoy preparando mis materiales, pero tengo una duda, las tiran de la ventana que medidas tienen de ancho? Me refiero a las tiras claras y la negra, gracias
@@TheBrokenNeedle Thanks, just want to be clear about it.... so if my frame is 2.5" wide, I should cut 1.25" on the left side and bottom of each square?
I started an attic window quilt using a digital panel containing a Victorian Mansion. It didn't take me long to discover the house was distorted as you've mentioned in your tutorial. Totally unsat!! I'm fairly new to quilting (a little over a year), but I knew there had to be a way to eliminate the distortion. Thank goodness I found your video. However, how do you determine ahead of time how wide your total frame is going to be so you know how much of the panel pieces you need to cut to eliminate that distortion? This may be an absolutely dumb question, but I am a beginner and am allowed a few!! :)
Hi Annette, it does not matter how many blocks that you cut. The MOST IMPORTANT part is the sashing between the blocks/windows. I used 1 1/2" sashing in mine. So I had to reduce the size of each block by 1 1/2" on all sides that had sashing. Another example if you have 2 inch sashing you would have to trim the blocks by 2 inches on each side that you are adding sashing. Hope this helps :)
@@TheBrokenNeedle Thanks for your quick response. It does indeed help. One more question: Why didn't you cut more of the blocks to account for the sashing you added? Thanks so much for your help.
I think she meant “why didn’t you cut more OFF the blocks to account for the sashing”. You only cut off for the width of the window frame but not the sashing.?? Help please
I have thoroughly confused myself. first thing I want to confirm are your frame strips cut at 1.5". Second thing is about cutting the sides of the panel pieces. Am I always just cutting the left and bottom side of each panel square on all rows and also the top side of all squares except on the first row. Hope that makes sense. I did read through all the other comments but I just got more confused.
@@TheBrokenNeedle I just did one with Aliens for my son. My sashing is black, but the scenery is a taupe and teal. I’m having a hard time trying to figure out how to quilt it.
@@Alisapao You could use a variegated thread with taupe and teal and maybe quilt simple stars. I wouldn't over quilt it the star of the quilt would be the panel :)

The frames are 1-1/2” we cut out 1/2” off each panel = 1” The last 1/2” is lost in the seam allowances = 1-1/2”
