I printed the download and plan to start this as soon as possible. But with the triangles, I sew them on first, then trim. I'm pattern dyslexic and it's very easy to make mistakes. Sewing it first makes it easier for me to be sure I have it right. Great video/great teacher.

I just found this video. Thank you for this tutorial. I have panels I want to do this technique with. I would stitch the brown squares "snowballing" the corner before cutting.
What a remarkable teacher you are, Tammy! (I was an elementary teacher and principal for 43 years so I know great teaching when I see it!) It’s a mitzvah to demonstrate precision in cutting in such an accessible way: you made it seem easy, which makes your viewers increasingly confident. The lamplight emphasis is new to me; I’ve just relied on the traditional contrast. The method for mitering is good for many and it’s an excellent strategy to teach. Personally, I prefer the traditional way because it’s easy for me and I find the diagonal seam distracting, but that’s just me. The panel is a delight. Is it just me, or is it harder and harder to find high quality panels in stores anymore? Maybe that’s just nostalgia for The Before Times…. This was such a lovely video and I enjoyed it no end. Thank you.
Love this video. I have never purchased a panel that was printed on the straight of grain. I always struggled w/ trying to figure out how to cut & straighten the edges. I like how you approach this. I especially love your technique to avoid y seams. I will try to do this w/ any y seams in the future. I always wanted to make an attic windows quilt but avoided it because of the dreaded y seams. Thanks for sharing so I can make one.
Sunflower Baby Donna Jordan has some videos where she shows how to straighten crooked panels, too. I always struggled with this as well. You might find she has some additional tips to help. I haven’t tried it yet, though, but did find it helpful.
It’s beautiful. What about taking a half inch off each side of the panel pieces so there is a smooth transition? So, you don’t have a very long leg behind the window frame on teddy, for instance. Not sure if I’m saying this clearly....

I have a panel of bird squares I wanted to do in a window frame style, but they are squares, not rectangles. I will just adjust length of the window sill border blocks I can finally do this with the excellent trick for mitered corner! Thank you!

Oh Tammy, I have SO many panels and have wanted to do this technique for years. And you have even done the math for us!! But, I have lupus and with it, I’ve got lupiebrain big time. You know, forgetting things, things don’t make sense, you can’t figure it out, etc. (I know most of us in our “beyond the hump” phase are this way, I just get to blame mine on lupus rather than aging!!!🤣😂). Perhaps you could come to Atlanta and help me in person. That way, I MIGHT be able to figure it out. 🙄😉😉
Carol Johnson I do try to do this, often. Fortunately, my new best friend is someone who was in a quilting class with me. We hang out all the time now. She understands what’s happening, and is very patient with me in trying to explain things, etc.....

Funny, but I was just wondering about doing an attic window layout for something else, yesterday. Trying to recall how to do it. I like the no miter method. Thanks. Also, just a side observation: i think both of you girls would look so much prettier in pastel colors like pink or light blue because of your skin tone. Black looks harsh on most people, especially next to the face. I can’t wear it there. Maybe print some tee shirts in those colors for your show, how about? 🌷
It's a pretty panel, but I always dislike the distortion you get on some of the figures because you had to split the panel...On this one, the milk bottle is too long. On some, an arm is too long or an antler is out of proportion...etc.. I wish there were a way not to do that....I vaguely remember one I saw that had the window pieces appliqued on, but that would be hard to do, I think and very time consuming.

I totally agree with you! I do not do videos but have instructions written up for people at my retreats. Why has no one done a video on the correct way to do Attic Windows?! This video was great for showing corners but did not address the distortion. You have to take out what you put in!
Where were you last year 😂...I had a Santa panel as well and I didn’t know about having to squaring up panel’s until I had finished quilting it ...what major headache 😂🤣 I got it done but had to cut of a bit of the boarder which was a shame . It’s hanging up again this year. I know how to square one up now thanks to you and you made it look easy. Merry Xmas from NZ 😘💐🎄

It's a great idea, but, and please don't be offended by this cause I couldn't do what you did, but the mullions on window aren't a realistic scale therefore making the scene panel parts too far apart. Like the beard, the fingers, etc. The brown and yellow parts of the window panes should only be about the size of the black grid (or smaller for more proper perspective). So basically had you just sewn the mullions together and sewn it on as an overlay, that would have looked more realistic. Look at the window in the panel behind the tree to see what I mean. My background is more construction than sewing. So as much as I love what you've done here and REALLY appreciate the skill and talent this art requires, that's how much the mullions jumped out at me. I usually hear complaints rather than constructive criticism, this isn't a complaint. Thanks for all the great lessons and ideas and a very Merry Christmas!
I have a problem with the transition. There would be parts you couldn't see so I think you would need to cut off what would be behind the window frame. I saw a deer panel and the antlers were wonky and didn't line up because they didn't cut that part off.
I understand what you’re saying as well. It was the first thing I noticed. Oddly enough, I have an architectural and building background as well. Isn’t the use of the light vs. darker fabric clever though?
@@marziahkiehn7004 I think the use of the graduated colored fabric and contrast as well as just the concept was brilliant! I've seen these kinds of big panels before and thought " big deal! Put some batting and a backing on it for what? It's not like you really made a quilt!" But in this case the panel is just one more piece of fabric being cut and sewn in! Not even like my example of a "mullion overlay" but actually built right in. I give a big 👍 on this project! I certainly haven't got the chops to pull this off quilting wise. I'm very impressed with the level of talent and ability.
The brown and gold parts struck me as a bit too thick as well, but i planned to make them thinner on my panel. I do, however, think that for a beginner, the larger pieces might be easier to deal witb for theur first try. They could make adjustments on later projects to their own taste.
Thank you so very much, as I have a deers in the woods panel and cannot for the life of me figure out how not to distort, I've watched Jenny Doan over and over but to no avail as one of her deer has an ear too long and goes into the next row if that makes sense. So I think maybe 2inches extra? Blessings 🇨🇦🌻🙏

Which ever batting you’d like to use. You can go to your local quilt shop to see if they have any suggestions or which batting would work better. Thank you for your comment! - Abby
Great video and instructions. I only have one comment. You took the time to account for the light source, but you didn't account for the width of the window dividers. For example, in row one, you have part of the ornament from the left side of block 2 showing at the right edge of block 1. Because of the width of the divider, that shouldn't be showing. The same with the teddy bear's arm in block 3. The same happens with Santa's mouth and his beard in the block below. It just looks off. I always cut 1" to 1 1/2" between panel blocks to help reduce this distortion.
Tammy what a beautiful window panel. Enjoy this tutorial very much. Also learned that I was using my Creative Grid 2 1/2"x 24 1/2" ruler wrong. Did you make a tutorial on this ruler. I'm a beginner using these rulers they are new too me and I've a brain that isn't great getting things correct. I'm a visual person any help is greatly appreciate. PS Love using the folded ruler cutting the triangles. Please make a tutorial on the what all you can do with these rulers.

Hi Thomasean Britten - We no longer have this specific panel in stock, but we would recommend finding one that suits the style you prefer, if you're able to. Some creators have experimented with using water color paints or even colored pencils on their fabrics to add shadows or create a different look (however, those things would probably wash out of the fabrics if you wash the project). Hi Glenna - We like to start by stitching around the window panels like a stitch-in-the-ditch, then we accent some of the main print by quilting around the edges. A lattice design would also be nice. The end result doesn't matter - as long as you enjoy it! -Michelle
I think an easy solution would be to have a scenery photo, and perhaps use tonal browns/greys instead of the yellows. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle
The pattern provides all of the measurements needed for the cuts of each fabric. That math might vary depending on the selection of fabrics if you are doing this without the kit. - Beth

Hi! You will want to adjust your measurements for your cuts depending on the size of your panel. I suggest dividing the size of your panel by 4 to get the measurements you need to cut the panel up into the 16 pieces needed. So if it is 40" wide by 36" long, then you'll need to cut your pieces 10" wide by 9" long. Hope that helps! - Beth

I remember when this video first came out. I loved watching her calming demonstration so much that I started searching for other videos she was doing. I looked for the pattern again because it was “free” 3 years ago. Although, it says it’s a free download now, it’s not. They want you to give them your email address first. Lovely video though.

I have a panel of bird squares I wanted to do in a window frame style, but they are squares, not rectangles. I will just adjust length of the window sill border blocks

Oh Tammy, I have SO many panels and have wanted to do this technique for years. And you have even done the math for us!! But, I have lupus and with it, I’ve got lupiebrain big time. You know, forgetting things, things don’t make sense, you can’t figure it out, etc. (I know most of us in our “beyond the hump” phase are this way, I just get to blame mine on lupus rather than aging!!!🤣😂). Perhaps you could come to Atlanta and help me in person. That way, I MIGHT be able to figure it out. 🙄😉😉
Sounds like you have a positive attitude about your condition. Maybe a friend can watch the video with you and help you figure out the steps.
I have chemo brain, although its improved a lot since my chemo in 2017. But, some things are lost forever. So, I blame everything on my chemo brain!
Carol Johnson I do try to do this, often. Fortunately, my new best friend is someone who was in a quilting class with me. We hang out all the time now. She understands what’s happening, and is very patient with me in trying to explain things, etc.....

I was lucky to find the Christmas List panel. I'm a newbie on doing window panels. How much each fabric to make the window panes? I can't wait to start! Tammy explain it so well.

I watch the video several times and printed off the download. It gives me the sizes of the pieces used in the picture but not total of each fabric.

Funny, but I was just wondering about doing an attic window layout for something else, yesterday. Trying to recall how to do it. I like the no miter method. Thanks.
Also, just a side observation: i think both of you girls would look so much prettier in pastel colors like pink or light blue because of your skin tone. Black looks harsh on most people, especially next to the face. I can’t wear it there. Maybe print some tee shirts in those colors for your show, how about? 🌷

It's a pretty panel, but I always dislike the distortion you get on some of the figures because you had to split the panel...On this one, the milk bottle is too long. On some, an arm is too long or an antler is out of proportion...etc.. I wish there were a way not to do that....I vaguely remember one I saw that had the window pieces appliqued on, but that would be hard to do, I think and very time consuming.

I totally agree with you! I do not do videos but have instructions written up for people at my retreats. Why has no one done a video on the correct way to do Attic Windows?! This video was great for showing corners but did not address the distortion. You have to take out what you put in!

Where were you last year 😂...I had a Santa panel as well and I didn’t know about having to squaring up panel’s until I had finished quilting it ...what major headache 😂🤣 I got it done but had to cut of a bit of the boarder which was a shame . It’s hanging up again this year. I know how to square one up now thanks to you and you made it look easy. Merry Xmas from NZ 😘💐🎄

Great video but I noticed that the Teddy Bears right hand paw is too far over in the third block. Is there a way around this?

It's a great idea, but, and please don't be offended by this cause I couldn't do what you did, but the mullions on window aren't a realistic scale therefore making the scene panel parts too far apart. Like the beard, the fingers, etc.
The brown and yellow parts of the window panes should only be about the size of the black grid (or smaller for more proper perspective). So basically had you just sewn the mullions together and sewn it on as an overlay, that would have looked more realistic. Look at the window in the panel behind the tree to see what I mean.
My background is more construction than sewing. So as much as I love what you've done here and REALLY appreciate the skill and talent this art requires, that's how much the mullions jumped out at me.
I usually hear complaints rather than constructive criticism, this isn't a complaint.

I have a problem with the transition. There would be parts you couldn't see so I think you would need to cut off what would be behind the window frame. I saw a deer panel and the antlers were wonky and didn't line up because they didn't cut that part off.

I understand what you’re saying as well. It was the first thing I noticed. Oddly enough, I have an architectural and building background as well. Isn’t the use of the light vs. darker fabric clever though?
@@marziahkiehn7004 I think the use of the graduated colored fabric and contrast as well as just the concept was brilliant! I've seen these kinds of big panels before and thought " big deal! Put some batting and a backing on it for what? It's not like you really made a quilt!" But in this case the panel is just one more piece of fabric being cut and sewn in! Not even like my example of a "mullion overlay" but actually built right in.
I give a big 👍 on this project! I certainly haven't got the chops to pull this off quilting wise. I'm very impressed with the level of talent and ability.
The brown and gold parts struck me as a bit too thick as well, but i planned to make them thinner on my panel.
I do, however, think that for a beginner, the larger pieces might be easier to deal witb for theur first try. They could make adjustments on later projects to their own taste.
cut extra strips out of your panel to avoid distortion. Not too much with this panel, but I've seen some doozies.

Thank you so very much, as I have a deers in the woods panel and cannot for the life of me figure out how not to distort, I've watched Jenny Doan over and over but to no avail as one of her deer has an ear too long and goes into the next row if that makes sense. So I think maybe 2inches extra? Blessings 🇨🇦🌻🙏

Which ever batting you’d like to use. You can go to your local quilt shop to see if they have any suggestions or which batting would work better. Thank you for your comment! - Abby
Great video and instructions. I only have one comment. You took the time to account for the light source, but you didn't account for the width of the window dividers. For example, in row one, you have part of the ornament from the left side of block 2 showing at the right edge of block 1. Because of the width of the divider, that shouldn't be showing. The same with the teddy bear's arm in block 3. The same happens with Santa's mouth and his beard in the block below. It just looks off. I always cut 1" to 1 1/2" between panel blocks to help reduce this distortion.

Tammy what a beautiful window panel. Enjoy this tutorial very much. Also learned that I was using my Creative Grid 2 1/2"x 24 1/2" ruler wrong. Did you make a tutorial on this ruler. I'm a beginner using these rulers they are new too me and I've a brain that isn't great getting things correct. I'm a visual person any help is greatly appreciate. PS Love using the folded ruler cutting the triangles. Please make a tutorial on the what all you can do with these rulers.

Hi Thomasean Britten - We no longer have this specific panel in stock, but we would recommend finding one that suits the style you prefer, if you're able to. Some creators have experimented with using water color paints or even colored pencils on their fabrics to add shadows or create a different look (however, those things would probably wash out of the fabrics if you wash the project). Hi Glenna - We like to start by stitching around the window panels like a stitch-in-the-ditch, then we accent some of the main print by quilting around the edges. A lattice design would also be nice. The end result doesn't matter - as long as you enjoy it! -Michelle

I think an easy solution would be to have a scenery photo, and perhaps use tonal browns/greys instead of the yellows. Hope this makes sense! 💖 -Michelle

The pattern provides all of the measurements needed for the cuts of each fabric. That math might vary depending on the selection of fabrics if you are doing this without the kit.

Glad it was helpful! Your cutting measurements will vary depending on the size of the quilt. You just want to make sure that your window panes are spaced the way you prefer.

How much fabric will I need of the dark brown for the sashing?

Do you cut into rows by the width measurement first? Then lay open into rows then cut the length measurement?
If you are following along with the Free Download instructions, then you will cut all of your fabrics first. Hope that helps!

Love this does it make a difference if panel is wider than length? I have a 40” wide by 36 long
Hi! You will want to adjust your measurements for your cuts depending on the size of your panel. I suggest dividing the size of your panel by 4 to get the measurements you need to cut the panel up into the 16 pieces needed. So if it is 40" wide by 36" long, then you'll need to cut your pieces 10" wide by 9" long.
