Story time: I was 4 years old when this song hit the airwaves from WAFT in Valdosta Georgia and I was BLOWN AWAY by that bass singer! Mom said I walked around for months growling out “step into the water”. Fast forward about 10 years our family had moved to Virginia, I was just a lonely farm boy who was not good at making friends, but I built a tree house waaay up in an old pine tree. I had saved up a bit and paid $1.25 for an old Casio radio from the Salvation Army. I got it home and put new batteries in it and took it up to my tree house. Low and behold, THE FIRST sound I heard over my ‘new’ radio was “Step in to the water…” from WKDE AM 1000 out of Altavista!!!!! This song will be my forever God-kiss.
Kirk Talley was such a great tenor. He and Mark Trammel (and probably Roger Bennett) totally changed the way the Cathedrals stacked their vocals. Glen Payne had trouble singing the usual part under the tenor, and Trammel filled that bill nicely. Worked with these guys a lot back in the day, and could go on forever. Great people.
Was John Malone with the Cathedrals? He was a friend of my dad. And I remember when I was a kid, he sang this song and How Great Thou Art ! And when he did, the windows of the church rattled !
