Elvis' press conference held in the New York Hilton on the afternoon of 9 June 1972, has become the stuff of musical legend and folklore, and remains not just his final press conference but one of the most frank and honest public appearances of his lifetime. The conference took place just hours before Elvis' first of four consecutive shows in the city's Madison Square Garden Arena.
Much of the footage remained unreleased for many years apart from some excerpts seen in "This Is Elvis", but it's authenticity was depleted by the use of the overdubbing of actors' voices with the questions asked of Elvis, and some of these were only paraphrases of the original questions. In 2012, as part of the "Prince From Another Planet" some of the video footage of this press conference was released officially by Sony, but only around half of the event was seen on the DVD.
The audio of the press conference has never been released officially and as such some questions from the press core remain inaudible, and many of the transcripts show some guesswork has taken place and even in parts where the sound is clear still have wildly inaccurate depictions of the questions. In this video I have tried to place subtitles over the parts which are difficult to understand and have written what I believe to be the questions being asked, but in some points are too difficult to hear so in those cases I have just placed "inaudible".
I love it when he say "The image is one thing, and human being is another... it is very hard to live up to an image". That is so true! People forget that he was just a man, a human being like you and me. What a humble, sweet and polite man and his voice just melts butter...

I think that was part of the reason he did the drugs, he tried so hard to stay a legend. Too bad he didn’t realize how loved he was and how much entertainment he brought us and still does💕

Elvis was the BEST. I saw him on my 16th birthday. I followed him until he died. He was the most humble, kind person, especially in this industry. He never put anyone down. He was so handsome and never will be another like him. His manager took so much advantage of him. It is a shame he died so young. RIP Elvis, we love you.

I am a man and I say it openly (as a fan): "I loved Elvis Presley when I was 13, I still love him at 60......and I will love him until the last minute - no matter when this last minute comes, Elvis was and is a king from another universe!

Elvis did a great interview, he kept his integrity, sincerety, politeness and wonderful sense of hunor during the entire interview. His father Vernon was humble and honest. The manager "col." Tom Parker is also being himself, showing off and being the rude, crude, clumsy and over-the-top bossy clown he was so infamous of being. This is a valuable piece of history. Just love Elvis.
I don't think Colonel Parker was rude and bossy here. He was just trying to keep order. At the beginning, he was trying to keep people from walking and standing in front of the people who were seated, and evidently in the middle of the interview someone was out of place again and he was asking him/her to move. Someone had to keep order. At the end of the interview he at least tried to implement a bit of humor when the allotted time was over and he had to cut it off. Maybe we do have reasons not like Colonel Parker, but not from this video.
Fascinating. He really knew how to pitch it and stay neutral. Effortlessly. I guess this is why he was so successful. What a legend. The Colonel on the other hand... Elvis would have been unstoppable if he'd have been allowed to tour Europe and the world. Anyway, what a man.
What if Elvis had toured oversees and something actually happened to him, as the Colonel feared? Elvis belongs to the world and history now....but was FIRMLY a product and representation of America, the country he loved and respected foremost. It's kind of fitting that he only performed....for US. Not performing overseas probably AMPLIFIED his gravitas....AS an American phenomenon and UNIVERSAL entity. Let the McCartneys and ABBAs, etc. tour Japan and wherever else.
But Elvis wanted to tour overseas. He wanted a challenge, and a change. He said he wanted to do it. But Elvis’s needs were not put first, unfortunately.
Elvis wanted a change. He wanted to be challenged artistically. Look what happened with the 68 special.🥰 I believe, he would have reinvented himself with worldwide tours again and probably not spiralled into total drug abuse and misery.
Same goes for the films. If he had been able to get better scripts that would have challenged him (again something Parker mishandled), things might have been different. (I think he was really good in his last two films despite the scripts being far from great!)

He used his wit and humor to disguise his self consciousness and he did a great job as always. He has such a vulnerability that comes through.
He was a simple man at heart. Just a poor kid who deservedly came to incredible riches early in life and had no clue had to handle it really.

Watching this 72 interview makes his fall just 4-5 years later even more unbelievable.
He still looks and sounds very good here. After '73 is when he really started going down hill, after the Hawaii special. 4 years is all it took, makes me terribly sad just thinking about it.
There's a picture of Elvis and Ginger in December of 1976 at her Grandfather's funeral and he looks pretty good in that time period. The end came pretty quick and by June 1977 he was looking really bad, and didn't make it but a few more weeks.
He did not fall...he was pushed. His manager used him..lied to him and no one cared as long as he kept paying the bills.
He was a sweet, careing man..who needed to be in the hospital. He was ill...he needed rest.
People failed him.
I saw him cloae up in November 1976 and he looked fabulous, in good health and full of energy. Linda T. was nearby and told me he had just been to a health spa in Palm Springs for six weeks.

A lot of celebrities and athletes should take a long look at how this man conducted himself his entire career in press conferences up till the very end he remained humble, respectful and polite he was smart enough to know both sides listen to music and proud enough to keep any opinions on political or controversial topics to himself knowing full well he had the potential to influence millions by answering questions like that a certain way I think that’s very admirable sadly people like him are far and few between these days

Elvis was indeed political and was hounded, degraded, hated by the republican party...the way they treated him was outrageous, degrading to him because he employed and had 'negro' (using the nice word here) friends. Elvis sought out Nixon b/c he wanted a drug narc badge (he was a drug addict and thought with that he'd be able to transport any all drugs where ever he wanted). You certainly could tell by his face and snicker how he felt about the women's right movement question. He wasn't for it! Most men at that time were intimidated by women becoming more equal. I like to think Elvis would have eventually embraced it...

He seems so nice, so genuinely humble. It’s interesting how he addresses the female reporters with such endearments as “honey” and “dear” but the men are “sirs”. It’s his way being nice and, oddly enough, respectful, though that seems strange to people born and raised well after this era. No one seems to take offense but he’d be excoriated today. Overall he seems like a kind, simple country boy made good. I just wish he’d realized that he didn’t need the Colonel; the Colonel needed him. Elvis seems like he was decent to the core; too bad he wasn’t made of stronger stuff.
He was a Southern gentleman and those terms are what older men will use to address a woman in the South to this day. It is not as PC today than it was then but, placed in the historical context of this interview, it was fine.
I love how you describe him, "a kind, simple country boy made good". Even he confirms it in a way when he talks about his overnight rise to fame. Being the first superstar of the television era and having to navigate that without any kind of blueprint or safeguard or even peers, geez...it is sobering to even consider.
Man, he was just so polite and measured and respectful -can you think of anyone in the public eye who says "I beg your pardon" nowadays? And it is jarring to realize how clueless he was when it came to the "business" of Elvis Presley, always deferring to Col Parker for an answer/explanation. Knowing what we know now about their "business" relationship, it is infuriating to see it happen in such plain view.
It pierces my heart to see what we lost when he died. There is a theory out there that what led to his death was way more complicated than simple drug abuse and/or heart failure btw. in the north of England men some times call women love etc and the women do that to the men as well. Its just being nice and nothing sexual in it- the get this terminology from the British.
RESPECT - he had it in bucketloads. He had respect for everyone that's just another reason that makes him so personable. He had respect for any individual, their opinions, their questions, their time and their demands. How sweet was it when he bent so far forwards to see the person he he was talking to.

Elvis was a humble, intelligent person and He handles the press very well. He talks of going to Japan and Europe how wonderful that would have been, I think a tour like that would have energized him and really brought out the best of Elvis. He always could rise to an occasion! the 68 special and the 73 Hawaii concert are perfect examples off Elvis showing the world that He was on top of his game! TCB!
Contrary to the movie, in real life Elvis never knew Colonel Parker's real name was Andreas van Kuijk, nor that he was in America illegally. That's why he could never leave the states to tour, but also that as seen here Elvis had no idea that there was a sinister reason why he could never tour outside of America.
The facts about "The Colonel" didn't come out until Priscilla sued him in 1979.
That's the thing....he was ALREADY super energized (he even eluded to this in this press conference where he said he'd 'never retire because he had so much energy'....never heard THAT before from anyone!) and we got MORE than 'the best' out of him. I kind of like that he never went 'over there' and shared what is/was OURS! Though the world gets their 'piece'....Elvis was AMERICA'S!! I'm/We're SELFISH about our King! They were in the process of planning a tour of Europe when he died.

Of course I knew who Elvis was when I was a kid we used to watch his old movies on the 4:00 movie. But when I was a teenager I saw him in an interview he was dressed in blue and it was around 1972 he came across as a very nice person and humble. I remember him saying I'm just an entertainer... And I thought it was the perfect answer. I realize now that this was the interview. I remember at the time I thought he was really cool.

Through his very short life he reinvented himself and the start of the 70's when i was a kid things were so different again from the 60's. Even more outrageous and colourful with things like Bell Bottom trousers. and jumpsuits.
How different the Press were as well back then and we are really talking about 50 years ago. There must be thousands of people still alive that were so lucky to have gone to his shows and just had that life changing experience.
We can all look back at this interview with happiness and sadness at the same time. He just loved to entertain the fans and GAVE HIS BODY AND SOUL to the END, YES TO THE VERY END OF HIS LIFE.
I think the music industry today is SO FICKLE. Big tour LIVE CONCERTS seem to be a thing of the past for the so called artists of the last 15-20 years

The colonel's job was to keep the millions rolling in as elvis bought jet plane after house's for everyone cars also house's for kitchen staff gardener's jewellery everywhere everything, elvis contracted the colonel got a third of the earrings negotiations, which was about normal considering the times an big contracted deals involving millions of dollars, some believe otherwise rumours are hard to dispel especially since nobody knows for sure and elvis has passed away including his father, the 50% talk was probably the merchandising, toys, teddies, mugs scarves, nick nack ect ect. Which again was about normal, no the bad talk about the colonel making elvis work is all baloney, as for the colonel not having a passport, rubbish elvis would have got him one from Nixon that time he called in tha oval office to get his federal badge an gun licence, also the colonel was married to an American lady, also elvis kept putting it off (girls guns pills) couldn't be found in Europe, he wanted to go granted, however it's like giving up on the dope I'll clean myself up next week year ,then it just was to late, he should have went over in 1960 before he got dragged down!..

Did anyone notice how his master sorry manager dictates everything from the side lines, I've always had the impression he put the fear of God into Elvis, he definitely pulled all the strings. The part where Parker tells people to come forward its like he's got Elvis displayed on show in the ring of a cattle market, horrid greedy man, he controlled Elvis,s life, and Elvis couldn't see it.
Elvis is always so polite and charming, never disrespectful to anyone or anything, just wished he,d stood up to his master, even his very early girlfriends said they told him to him to , or he,d pay for it, and he sure did,
Elvis should have been allowed to spread his artistic wings, he was caged and sanitised from a very young age, its no surprise he chose some of the paths he chose, Gladys saw the shark in Parker from day one, he tugged and tugged at Elvis till he took him under.
Parker should have been got rid of after the movie noose, Elvis would have been happier and content both professionally and personally.
This was 72 and the beginning of what was to be a very preventable sad decline, such a travesty. .

The MSG gig was the first time I saw Elvis. And he did come back to New York to Long Island the following year.
Col Tom Parker was his downfall..He took 50% of everything Elvis earned..locked him into all those movies he didnt want to do..Its a shame he never got to travel and tour abroad as he wished..Such a lovely person..so kind..so funny..sweet..and my God was he gorgeous in every way...Inside and out. He did not take 50% of everything...Parker got 50% pf promotional and merchandising and 25% of Entertainment (Recording, Concerts and Movies)..This was from 1955 to 1976 when he did resign a new contract for 50% of everything...
Parker did some good things also. He kept Elvis’ fame from 1958-60 he was responsible for the 68’ comeback , he did well for Elvis’ security also considering he was at security for Lyndon B

To the person who said "This is not Elvis in this video, it is his brother Jesse. You can tell this by looking at his eye color." does not know of what they speak! Even Marilyn Monroe's blue eyes showed up as brown in most closeup still shots; her true color showed only in movie film; it's all dependent on camera, camera settings, lights & other reasons; AGAIN - see Marilyn Monroe.
Good to see the press conference in its entirety, thanks! Interesting to see his interaction and body language when his father answered a question at the end. I wonder whose idea it was to bring Vernon onto these press conferences I've seen? Maybe having family around made him feel less nervous in public situations.
This interview just shows that the press has not changed in 50+ years, they still ask such idiotic questions.

It's sad that we live in a world where a man can't share his views on certain topics for fear of being cancelled. Elvis handled the question very skillfully but still, its Shameful that this is the world we live in.

Elvis handles this interview very well, considering the stupid questions asked by the press. Elvis is very honest, not a bad word said against anyone, no political crap, dispite the press trying to catch him out. Love this man with all my heart ❤❤❤

That Colonel Parker sure was a piece of work, Elvis could've been even more without him.
Not true. The Colonel was responsible for his financial success and it's extremely unlikely that Presley would have been as successful without him. Every step of the way the Colonel negotiated with RCA, hollywood studios etc to ensure that Elvis had the best deal possible and some of the deals he wrangled for Elvis were truly astonishing (I am currently reading Elvis' bio by Peter Guralnick, early '60s years, and this is all documented there)
Monetary wise and his fame I sort of agree. But as a manager he didn’t take interest in his personal growth as a Entertainer.
Elvis out grew his manager by leaps and bounds. Presley needed a music manager not a carney manager.

I had read Elvis didn't appear in msg earlier because he had thought people in new York wouldn't like him as much as in other cities so he waited until the time was right or when he was good to be there

Also, if you know anything about southern vernacular, when someone starts an answer to you with the word "honey", it ain't because they love you I can guarantee you that.
