  • Elvis Presley’s historic satellite broadcast from Honolulu in Hawaii and the rehearsal back up show took place on 14 January 1973 and 12 January 1973 respectively. Such was the historical significance of the event, assuming that everything went according to plan, ensured that the advance publicity was put into full swing as soon as the event had been privately confirmed.
Such was the magnitude of what was being announced, Elvis himself would be present and actively taking part, this in itself was almost unique, with such stuff usually left to Colonel Parker and his staff. This began with the public announcement, which took place on 5 September 1972 at The Las Vegas Hilton, just hours after Elvis closing show at the same venue the previous evening.
The second part took place at the conclusion of Elvis’ final tour of 1972, which just happened to have taken place at Honolulu’s International Center, the same venue that would host the satellite broadcast. The tour had concluded two days earlier but Elvis took a short press conference at The Hilton’s Hawaiian Village Hotel on 20 November 1972.
The majority of the footage filmed at this press conference has been lost and only a small portion survives and the full audio of the event has not been released officially either. Sony/RCA released the announcement from 5 September, although not in the correct running order. and what footage of the press conference that could be located as an “easter egg” on the single DVD version of the “Aloha” Special Edition.
This video contains both events with the only known source of audio from the press conference filling the large gaps where no video is available. It should be noted that in many places the audio is very poor so one can only hope that a decent version is released soon of this historic event.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
