  • ►Replacing the mass air flow sensor, also commonly referred to as the MAF, on a Porsche 996 911 is one of the easier DIYs you can do in your garage. Before replacing your MAF, you can attempt to clean it with MAF cleaner. If that doesn't solve your problems, replacing it only requires a few hand tools.
There aren't many symptoms of a failing mass air flow sensor on your Porsche 996. While you might experience some stuttering or hesitation, typically, the most apparent indicator is a check engine light with an associated fault code. Some of the potential Porsche 996 fault codes for the MAF are:
Fault Code - P0100: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit
Fault Code - P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem
Fault Code - P0102: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
Fault Code - P0103: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input
Fault Code - P0104: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Intermittent

If the cel is on and you dont have a scanner can you disconnect the battery and will the cel go away if you've corrected the problem?
Thank you sir ! you have been a great help in teaching me to maintain my 996

Easy the MAF only goes in and lines up to the screws 1 way.

Nice video. It kind of looks like you could have removed the MAF sensor without removing the box. What prevents you from doing that?

For sure! We were shooting about 8 different videos at the same time, so the box had to come out anyways.

Speaking from experience a lot of debris finds it’s way into the air cleaner box so it’s never a bad idea to open it up and check.

Will I get instance feedback after installing new MAFs on a 2007 turbo (no error code) or is a reset or memory relearn battery disconnect needed? Honestly I was thinking about just buying 1 new one & trying it on both sides to find the bad one. Slightly rough idle but bouncy engine revs as I slowly increase rpm in neutral. Does that sound like faulty MAF or o2 sensor or intake leak or vacuum leak? Thank you

Will replacing the MAF automatically extinguish the check engine light? Or is there another procedure to clear the light?

Hi Jack, you will still need to use a scanner to clear the code after the part has been replaced!

Thanks for this! Question: my local dealer says that my MAF sensor is bad on my 996 because my oil separator is bad and oil got into the intake and ruined the sensor. Is that common? I’m wondering if the sensor just needs to be replaced and they’re trying to create a 10 hr job

I’m also curious how to clear the check engine lights + how to ensure everything is working properly, if I do this myself. Thanks!

Hi Jake, it is very possible that the system has failed, however, the feed going back into the intake typically sits after the MAF, so I find it hard to believe the MAF itself was covered in oil. It would have to be catastrophic for that to happen. An easy way to inspect it would be by removing the airbox and intake tube, and inspect the throttle body for residue.
