This is the perfect explanation of jacking this car. Really nailed the theory and practice. I had mine already up on the front and decided I wanted the rear up as well, and though that was outside the procedure detailed here, you gave me enough understanding of how the car moves and balances that I had no problem and was comfortable with what I was doing the whole time.

    1) back the car onto two ramps.
    2) place floor jack under RIGHT REAR jacking point and raise high enough to place a jackstand under the RIGHT FRONT jacking point. (same as suggested in the video)
    3) lower floor jack.
    4) place floor jack under LEFT REAR jacking point and raise high enough to place a jackstand under the LEFT FRONT jacking point. (same as suggested in the video)
    5) lower floor jack.
    6) the car is now supported in front by two jackstands at the jacking points and by two ramps under the rear tires. the car is solidly resting on four points on a slight incline from back to front.
    7) place floor jack under RIGHT REAR suspension point as noted in video and jack high enough to place a jackstand under the RIGHT REAR jacking point.
    8) lower the floor jack.
    9) place floor jack under LEFT REAR suspension point as noted in video and jack high enough to place a jackstand under the LEFT REAR jacking point.
    10) remove the ramps or leave in place as a safety precaution.
    11) lower the floor jack.
only one jack is necessary and the car remains solidly on four points at all times. not necessarily better, just a variation on a theme, although there may be some weight distribution benefits doing it this way....or not. :)

Better/safer method: Jack from rear on one side and set stand under front jack point. Place block under rear tire so you don't drop it all the way back to the floor. Move to other side of car and repeat. Now you have both front jack stands in and both rear wheels sitting on blocks 4" or so thick. Now lift from rear of car and set 2 rear stands at once. At no time will the opposite front wheel come up from the ground or stand.

Yes did it this way on my 997. Less laborious and safe. Also I have stacked 2x6's attached to each other with metal plate on top and just high enough to raise car and take wheels off. Solid, wide footprint and reduces cost of expensive jack stands all around.

Very interesting demonstration and analytics..... I found all this very helpful as it is confusing and can lead to safety issues if done incorrectly...good information on precautions to take ... well done....911 997 ... with the weight distribution and lack of floor jacking points is not the easiest car to jack up as I have found..... stay safe everyone

I’ve always done the lifting procedure exactly as you’ve done except I’ve used the twist in plastic pucks into the car’s jack points. A month ago, on level concrete, car chocked properly, the rubber pad on my jack, somehow slid off puck, when lifting first right rear point. Huge damage to car as weight crushed area just outside jack point. I like your idea of wood with bolt extending up into jack point. On that first lift, if I’d just slid some wood blocks under rear tire, as it came up, I’d not have this damage, as it would not have much distance to fall. Something I’ll always do in the future.

Just finished this job on my new to me 911. This is really no different than any spark plug job on any other car except for the tight space. The pivoting ratches and extensions are critical. Get at least one small pivoting ratching. I would add to make sure the 5/8ths pivoting spark plug wrench is magnetic, which makes this much easier. I got one with a built in short extension. Also very helpful is a very small/flat finger ratchet and a T-40 extension. If you've done plugs before don't be intimidated by this work. Fairly painless and save $600-800 above an independent.

If you only had one jack, couldn’t you just put something under the rear wheels when lowering it back down so it doesn’t lean so far back and the front may not lift so high to come off that other corner jackstand?? Also, that fourth jackstand you had at a different height than the rest, so it was leaning. 4:03

    • @CarFanatic

I did it when I had my wheels refinished. Additionally, you would put it on all four for a transmission fluid change, coolant flush, and front differential fluid change. A lot of the fluid changes need to happen with the car level.

Also when doing a brake bleed on all four wheels. Depending on the car, there is no room to get a hose and wrench on the bleeder, at least not easily. And if the hose pops off, the last thing I need is brake fluid on the rim or other components where I cannot easily clean it off with the wheels in place.

    • @CarFanatic

You cannot lift the rear up using the front lift points. Because of the weight in the back, only the front will lift up. So you do have to use the rear suspension sub frame.

The whole raising the whole car due the chassis being stiff thing is a common misconception. It’s just a matter of suspension travel. I’m not saying your Porsche isn’t stiff, it’s just not the reason the whole car “lifts.” A normal car bending 3-4” would start cracking glass and paint.. you’d know it. Normal cars just have a lot of suspension travel
