@@akiradkcn Glitches, golden fleece has no damage cap, pretty boring gameplay (personally), twitch gimmick, etc. It's one of those game that might get a couple of months then no one will talk about it.

I bought it for the Switch, I had NO idea they had special Twitch stuff. I don't feel like the game is missing anything so it sounds like they did a great job implementing something that's just a little extra. I did get soft locked like four times though 🥺
I actually didn't see anyone playing this before I bought it. I bought strictly because of the cutesy artstyle combined with demonic and satanic symbolism. For me it was that simple. It's kind of astounding to me to hear about the twitch integration, it's weird to invest so much effort into something that the vast majority of the population will never interact with solely for the marketing, and it's a shame. I feel that the game does need some improvements such as being to change name and forms of your follower after they get indocrinated, more powerups, buildings and stuff to do in general. I'm hoping there will be DLC and more content continuously streaming out for this game, because otherwise it's quite short. I also hope in the future you'll be able to recruit the 4 old bishops to your cult as well in some extra hard challenge run. Also more interactions with your followers, assigning more specific roles, maybe even being able to go into their homes. Probably too ambitious, but I think it would greatly increase replayability for me.
Given the amount of money spent on marketing, just adding a few gimmicks so that others do the marketing for you is a fairly brilliant idea. Also, you say that most won't experience these particular mechanics, but I'd argue that you're part of the audience interacting with the streamer who is playing the game, you ARE experiencing said mechanics; it could even be argued more people experience these mechanics than ever actually play the game.
I had no idea about the twitch integration before purchasing it. I was sold on the cult management aspect. I think the twitch stuff is cool for those who enjoy it.
I just picked this game up today. Got the trial on PS5 and decided to see how it was. As soon as I got the alert saying I had 5 minutes left on the trial, I bought the Heretic edition as it was on sale. I have been playing it nonstop for the past 4 hours and haven't been this engrossed in a game in a LONG time. Definitely well worth the time and money. It does have some jank, but it's a ton of fun and has personality throughout every pixel.
I followed this game for a while when it was first announced but quickly forgot about it until Wanderbots started his early access preview and I fell madly in love! Pre-ordered the game and had the day off to play it, then proceeded a 14 hour playthrough until I beat the game! I absolutely LOVE this game and I'm taking vacation next week so I'll probably hop back in and try to 100% it along with Children of Morta and possibly Dead Cells!
I remember seeing a trailer for it some time ago and thought it looked neat, but I since forgot about it. That was until it launched and I drunk purchased it on a whim. Really enjoying it aside from some of the bugs
The only thing about this review I don't agree with is calling it a meme game. I waited years for the game after they showed it the first time on a E3 event. Regardless, when my great leader asked me to confess I told him (you) the truth. That night you woke me up in the middle of the night and slit my throat out of disgust. Anyway 10/10 cult would join again... except for, yeah... the poop thing.
>the twitch integration is a marketing gimmick and nothing more but i can appreciate the reason the gimmick works: it makes the game more social in a modern way, which connects people to have fun. i 'played' that little marble race thing on a random stream and it was fun for no good reason at all. just because it benefits sales doesn't mean it's amoral. i also like to imagine it somehow gives people a playful exposure to cults as systems of unhealthy social control (especially when there's magic /s). glad to see your review. thanks for the video~
I've been twitch streaming this game too, and it's been a riot. It is a smidge on the easy side esp for a Devolver Digital game, and I'm expecting them to release more Stuff To Do in the near future like they've done with their previous games, and there were several bugs that have since been ironed out (still quite a few tho). Some nitpicks: 1 - Weapon aiming. Despite being much slower, I actually prefer the hammer over the axe for this specific reason--the hammer very clearly marks where you are striking and allows you to redirect during the wind-up. Honestly, they could do this for all of the weapons and it'd be fine with me. 2 - Cult expansion is a bit thin. There's certainly enough stuff to make to fill out the compound they give you, but it's also a bit underwhelming in general. 3 - No doctrine respec. Feels like you ought to be able to! It'd be in keeping with the theme, and also since I was going into this blind I wasn't aware just how interconnected doctrines were until nearly halfway through the tree, and some of them don't really give you a clear indication of how effective they are. Maybe after you max out the devotion tree (which is also thin) you'd be able to use level-ups to give you a respec in the doctrines instead, if you want. 4 - Magic powers. I dunno, it seems to work best as an "oh shit" button, but only some of the magic has an "oh shit" effect. Others just don't feel that useful over using your regular attack.
This is the first I’m hearing about the twitch integration. I just know it’s a “phenomenon” cause of all the fanart I’ve been seeing. I’ve seen people stream the game, but none of them were using Twitch integration.
To anyone that enjoys this sort of game, I would recommend "Otherworld Legends". A free mobile dungeon crawling rogue-like very similar to Cult of the Lamb. The money only comes in if you want to buy new characters and the ads only come in when you want an extra chance each dungeon run (where the game shows you the ad only after you finish the dungeon run before getting your final rewards rather than when you get the extra life). Its insanely fun, and you should definitely try it.
would love a more deep explanation of how Twitch integrates into the game. Have only played it offline... and would probably never see this side of it. Could be the future of how online games work
This game didn't seem all that appealing to me. I'm not entirely about randomly generated games with randomly generated levels and rogue-like elements and stuff like that. But once you got into the part about raising your cult and customizing and progressing and stuff like that, it raised my interest a lot! I'm actually interested in this game now.
Mind blowing thought I had when I saw this game being played - This is functionally a new Act Raiser. Different genres for the two halfs (Rogue-lite instead of Combat Platformer, and Animal Crossing/Colony Sim versus 4x with light shump elements) but effectively it is Act Raiser.
I really like this game, but personally I find it fairly easy. I’ve died once as I’ve just entered the third biome. The only weapon I dislike is the dagger, otherwise playing games with similar rouge lite games have prepared me far to well for a game “recommended” to play on normal. I recommend at least hard for people who enjoy this genre. As Jared himself said.
Ya, its really easy. I died once in the 3rd area to an invisible enemy i couldn't hurt, but aside from that, the levels are so short and you gain power so quickly the only challenge comes from your cult being needy little bastards.
I really appreciate how much you've stayed true to your original review format. I know it must be challenging, but it's greatly appreciated, especially in the current state of UA-cam. I hope you're doing well.
I remember when this game first revelealed by Devolver. I'm so excited because it's remind me of Don't Starve and Binding of Isaac, both is my favourite indie game. Meanwhile the Twitch Chat was like "ResidentSleeper", " skip", "Hades Clone !" I'm so happy this game prove how wrong they are for judging the game before it release and even played it
I would absolutely love to see maybe a Vlad supercut of your streams for this game, I've wanted to watch but my time has been absolute junk and VODs probably are a bit big for my viewing budget at the moment. It looks like a lot of fun though!
I absolutely love this game. It can be a little repetitive yeah, but the art style and gameplay loop are fun as hell. Can't wait for them to add more content, as I've seen they have a roadmap planned.
Thanks for setting the record straight. Unlike most people in the comments I had saw twitch streamers playing it and assumed it would be sad and worthless as a single player experience and wrote it off.
I had no idea about the twitch integration lol, funny that you talked about like people would only think it was a streamer game. I think the twitch integration looks super cool.
You know what this game reminds me of? Actraiser. You fight to free your people who you then guide and care for to gain more power so you can fight and free even more of your people. Its kind of a modern interpretation of Actraiser, but using modern gameplay mechanic trends: Rogue-lite instead of action platformer, colony management instead of city-planning god game.
It sounds kind of fun, but the visuals just look too "The Amazing World of Gumball" for me to be able to find it visually appealing. But yeah, art taste is a subjective thing.
I bought this day one and I’ve been having a blast. I do agree with the combat part, but honestly my biggest gripe is that the cult part doesn’t feel balanced.. like I’m practically maxed before even beating the third boss. And a few of the rituals are a bit op… like I chose the side to get cultist to donate their money… it takes a bit of a faith hit but they have you about 500 each time… ridiculous.. and they just throw commandment tablets at you
I created the perfect farm for at least 5 hours (including grinding for mats) just to prevent ever running out of food. Also a ton of shrines for free fish and meat.
I’m glad you pointed out how the twitch integration affected your enjoyment I just can’t trust a review of someone who essentially played the version of a game with extra features to decide if I want to buy a game without those features. It’s a double edge sword of this kind of twitch integration I suppose.
Just once I'd like to meet a benevolent god that sincerely just wants to help people in a game and help him without any strings attached on either side.
big part on why i got the game was because i kept seeing it on tiktok, and it looked pretty interesting. if it's all over twitch then they did a pretty good job marketing it. whoever did it needs a raise honestly.
Honestly I do hope they add more content for the cult, since I really like the animal crossing aspect of the game which I would love to see flushed out more.😺
One of the best indie games I have ever played °addictingly fun and cute °responsive and smooth gameplay reminds me of Happy Tree Friends, Sims, Don't Starve, and Stardew Valley all mixed into one. My only nitpick would be that the combat feels great and responsive but I just wish you could lock on to enemies to make it more fluid.
I've been playing this game for the past week and I've had a blast. I started on the extra hard mode just to see what it was like since I could change it whenever, and it wasn't all that bad especially if you spend the time to completely level your base. There is one issue I have, and that is that sometimes the game just glitches out and members stop working or the game just softlocks, which happened to me after finally beating the 3rd demon and I was so salty I went from the hardest mode to the easiest just to not have to struggle with that boss again. That's the only time the glitch really messed me up, other than that it isn't too bad because you can just save, go to the main menu, and reload. If they managed to fix that, it'd be amazing. Can't wait to do another play through and try out the other rituals and stuff.
Thanks for the review bud. The last Roguelike I played was Hades. I couldn't complete it 😂 my god damage sponge got so high up I still got mauled. Quite sure it got harder despite the damage decrease
I'm really surprised you didn't mention Actraiser in this review. It's the game I see people most comparing it to--even though the action part of the gameplay is top-down rather than side-scrolling.
"They're essentially just different attack speeds... and the hammer." 😂 I think it kind of works though. Since you're always forced to use a random weapon, it's nice that they're not Super different. Still, a great addition idea for future updates.
That Twitch integration sounds like a pretty good embodiment of just one reason why I don't like streams. That being the interactivity between the entertainer, and the audience.
This game is just feeling way too shallow for me. Also, I've got a bug where only a few people show up for any ritual or sermon. It's really hampered my experience.
that would be fine if you still had access to your full cult however only people in you sermon can be interacted with. I had a quest to marry a follower however he was tending the farms on the other side of the base so he/she/it couldn't get married and i failed the quest
I have had to "prank" a follower with poop food so many times now, I'm about ready to feed them the lethal version so I can just end the madness. edit: seriously, I'm wondering if the devs are OK....
I did about 10 hours of this game and got to the 2nd boss. And then the game just sort of stops and you run out of things to do on the "building your cult" screen. Everything is built and there's no difficulty. Then I had no desire to finish the other 3 "dungeons," which are just more of the same and none of the randomness means anything. It's not Binding of Isaac. I really wouldn't recommend it. Oh, and having to go up to each cult member constantly to make them dance to upgrade them sucks.
Yeah, it stops being fun really fast once you run out of things to progress. I feel like I've barely started, and the only upgrades I have left are level 2 buildings. It's a shame really, I was pretty excited for this one.
For me The Binding of Isaac was WAY too random so if this hinges more on settlement management than obscene luck (or obscene skill in absence of obscene luck) than I'm all for it lol
I wish you would have addresses the bugs. I LOVE this game but the bugs on both PC and Console have made it worth considering waiting before buying it.
This game looks like fun, but I'll probably wait some more time until they've ironed out the bugs that supposedly occur on the console versions or maybe added a bit more stuff via updates.
Yeah, I spent a loooot more time tending to the flock than dungeon diving. Honestly, where I am now in the game, i only go on crusades in hopes I'll get some lumber along the way, because that is BY FAR the scarcest resource.
Worth noting the game was rushed out and GoG users got and are still getting screwed by the buggy rushed release combined with the lack of updates to counter this, which includes a progression softlock. Love to the devs, unacceptable incompetence on the part of management.
Pretty much my only issue with the game is that the game just stops working a ton, whether it's the game freezing, crashing or everyone just stop moving when I try to do a ritual. Idk how bad it is on other platforms but I play it on PS5 and it happens way more then it should. But other then that I find the game really fun!
Likewise. I'm on PS4pro and I've had the game just fail to complete rituals. Thankfully you can save mid failure, quit out to menu and reload without losing any progress, you just have to try the ritual again. My biggest issue though was the jumping spider enemies in area 4. Sometimes they would jump off screen for their attacks and just decide to never land, locking me into a room since there's no bombing doors like in TBOI. Having to restart a dungeon run because the game fucked something up is frustrating and since it's procedurally generated, there's no guarantee you'll get what you had before. Great game but some bug fixes are definitely in order.
@@Woodzdragon yeah stuff like that would also happen to me. Just earlier today I went to pick up a weapon upgrade and the game just froze, I couldn't even open up the menu. And it's so annoying cause I know I'm close to beating the game but this shit just keeps messing up my runs:(
Had no clue about the twitch thing, I just remember seeing mutuals play the game and just bit the bullet and just got absorbed for 5 days playing the game, still its neat its their

Its kind of a modern interpretation of Actraiser, but using modern gameplay mechanic trends: Rogue-lite instead of action platformer, colony management instead of city-planning god game.
nice review and love the addressing of the twitch integration
It sounds kind of fun, but the visuals just look too "The Amazing World of Gumball" for me to be able to find it visually appealing. But yeah, art taste is a subjective thing.
I bought this for my girlfriend because this kind of game is EXACTLY right up her alley from design to gameplay.
Was able to catch a bit of you playing this, looked like you were having a lot of fun.
I bought this day one and I’ve been having a blast. I do agree with the combat part, but honestly my biggest gripe is that the cult part doesn’t feel balanced.. like I’m practically maxed before even beating the third boss. And a few of the rituals are a bit op… like I chose the side to get cultist to donate their money… it takes a bit of a faith hit but they have you about 500 each time… ridiculous.. and they just throw commandment tablets at you
Jared LOVES making his chat give him money!!!!
I enjoy your reviews. I´m looking forward to new ones
It seems it has good difficulty settings, easy for those unfamiliar with games, normal for a casual playthrough, hard for some challenge
i missed your reviews so much, ty mate!!!! :D
Just once I'd like to meet a benevolent god that sincerely just wants to help people in a game and help him without any strings attached on either side.
Cool review. I'll check it out after I get through my backlog
there was nO management requiert, just feeding the cult...
no late game content, was finished in 10 hours...
big part on why i got the game was because i kept seeing it on tiktok, and it looked pretty interesting. if it's all over twitch then they did a pretty good job marketing it. whoever did it needs a raise honestly.
Maybe if there's a mode that REVOLVES AROUND the Twitch implementation system, then it'll be even more fun to watch streaming.
Didn't know this game, it seems cool. Tbh I'm kinda waiting on a review of Vampire Survivors, I love that game's "connections" with Castlevania.
Honestly I do hope they add more content for the cult, since I really like the animal crossing aspect of the game which I would love to see flushed out more.😺
fleshed
Nice review Jared. I'm picking it up down the road so they can squash the bugs.
I got it a bit after release, I was anticiping it for a while in fact. I love it and I just hope it's not forgotten about after the twitch buzz
One of the best indie games I have ever played
°addictingly fun and cute
°responsive and smooth gameplay
reminds me of Happy Tree Friends, Sims, Don't Starve, and Stardew Valley all mixed into one.
My only nitpick would be that the combat feels great and responsive but I just wish you could lock on to enemies to make it more fluid.
Thanks for an honest review. Thought this looked a bit shit.
Two reviews in a row, nice
Thanks for the review bud. The last Roguelike I played was Hades. I couldn't complete it 😂 my god damage sponge got so high up I still got mauled. Quite sure it got harder despite the damage decrease
I'm really surprised you didn't mention Actraiser in this review. It's the game I see people most comparing it to--even though the action part of the gameplay is top-down rather than side-scrolling.
"They're essentially just different attack speeds... and the hammer."
😂 I think it kind of works though. Since you're always forced to use a random weapon, it's nice that they're not Super different. Still, a great addition idea for future updates.
First, Love you Jared, hope you're doing good, you deserve all the views on the world
I just got this game. I hope I like it love your videos ❤ I just subscribed
That Twitch integration sounds like a pretty good embodiment of just one reason why I don't like streams. That being the interactivity between the entertainer, and the audience.
Sad my work makes me miss your streams. I wanna see those fights to the death!
@@almalone3282 Yeah, it's frustrating.
As an "old people", the idea of fighting to the death is both enticing, and the only potentially fun thing I'd do the entire year, so I'm in.
Try it in real life!
@@skeletonking2501 if you get in trouble just request trial by combat, you get to fight to the death to get off free
@@velvetbutterfly If only that was still a proper thing to do
Looks like someone had their comment deleted
I have had to "prank" a follower with poop food so many times now, I'm about ready to feed them the lethal version so I can just end the madness.
edit: seriously, I'm wondering if the devs are OK....
Trying to figure out how in the world I’ll have time for this game between Xenoblade 3 and Pokemon this fall.
The Jerd Herd, that's a cult I can get behind.
A wild Projared appears in my feed, catch it?
@@PhyreI3ird then
But for all it's faults i had vastly more fun with this game than Binding of Issac where I just have too see if rng is going BTFO my run.
I wish you would have addresses the bugs. I LOVE this game but the bugs on both PC and Console have made it worth considering waiting before buying it.
I’ve bought the game twice and played for around 60 hours at this point. I am just now learning that there was a Twitch component to this at all.
this was an excellent review! thanks jared
This game looks like fun, but I'll probably wait some more time until they've ironed out the bugs that supposedly occur on the console versions or maybe added a bit more stuff via updates.
Another review? Praised be!
Yeah, he’s making it a point to get more consistent content on this channel
>.> i make the old people fight too but the winner gets right of accession
Yeah, I spent a loooot more time tending to the flock than dungeon diving. Honestly, where I am now in the game, i only go on crusades in hopes I'll get some lumber along the way, because that is BY FAR the scarcest resource.
I was not expecting this game to be this popular
Worth noting the game was rushed out and GoG users got and are still getting screwed by the buggy rushed release combined with the lack of updates to counter this, which includes a progression softlock. Love to the devs, unacceptable incompetence on the part of management.
Playing the GOG version, I keep seeing people telling it's a buggy mess but I haven't encountered a single bug yet in 10 hours of playtime.
And it's so annoying cause I know I'm close to beating the game but this shit just keeps messing up my runs:(
This game reminds me of Gravity Falls and Star vs the Forces of Evil combined. The only two cartoon shows that were actually good on Disney channel.
Had no clue about the twitch thing, I just remember seeing mutuals play the game and just bit the bullet and just got absorbed for 5 days playing the game, still its neat its their
So it's basically the unholy love child of Animal Crossing and Binding of Issac.
jerd: it's a rogue-like
me: 👀
jerd: it's a bit easy
