The sanity effects were neat but I didn’t remember any of them until I watched this video. I really wish they would make another one. Or at least a proper remake.
I still have fond memories of playing Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain from Silicon Knights back in 1996 on the original PlayStation. Recently, I recovered my old Game Cube and an actual unopened copy of Eternal Darkness - both of which I had thought had been lost during a flood. I have been thoroughly enjoying all of the suspense and mind-warps that Eternal Darkness had to offer. 👀
@@SalmonJonesTheMagnificent Even by 20s standards Lovecraft was really racist. Doesn't mean he wasn't a good writer, but yeah. Dude was really racist. Supposedly it was born more out of ignorance and isolation rather than actual hate, and that he regretted it later in life, though it's hard to find any confirmation of that beyond things he supposedly wrote to his friends.
First game to really scare me was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was late, and it was the first ceiling master I'd ever seen. Screamed like a baby.
yeah I think that was the first scare for a lot of us. for me at least the first scare in a game i _owned_ Body Harvest was probably second, that game had some really tense moments
I walked into the Ghoma fight in the Deku Tree completely unprepared at like 9 years old. I literally jumped from the couch to the TV to turn off the console lol
I never could explore the mini-dungeon down the well as a kid, just ran around until I found the monocle and rushed my way out. People who only know the 3DS version can't imagine how creepy Ocarina of Time was sometimes.
Also it took a year or two before I was able to go out the temple and through the marketplace as adult Link without playing the sun song first to freeze the zombies. x)
I still to this day remember when Eternal Darkness pretended to delete my game from my memory card. I almost broke my TV . you have to beat the game 3 times to get the real ending but I never did.
Just realized something guys isnt this the 10th year of projared? Just checked and saw that 2 worlds Review is 10 year old. Its been uploaded in september 2010. So how about a little celebration? 🎉 So I on my Part want to thank you Jared for beeing with us the past ten years and bringing ne so much Joy. I wish you all the best hope you still live creating these great videos .
I love the cthulu references and nods. Hell they use ideas from lovecraft like crazy. I think the sanity meter could be much better these days, but the scare is limited these days for me. Good at the time of its release. Id love to revisit the game. Just so damn expensive.
My experience with Eternal darkness is a classic example of “my mom sold it” I didn’t play it much because I was 7 when my parents got it, I was obviously too young for it and it scared the crap out of me, so 5 years later (without my I knowledge) mom got rid of it at a garage sale for like 2 dollars.
The first time I got truly scared from a video game? Resident Evil 4. You’re thinking regenerators, right? No. I cant remember if it’s right after you get to the island, or halfway thru, but at some point you find these blood soaked bags hanging from the ceiling/wall. Oh, sooooo spooky. But there’s one in particular... you’re walking down a narrow hallway and you see this blood soaked bag. Naturally, you’d think nothing of it and keep running past. But this one. It just fucking starts shaking *violently* when you get near it. And it stops shaking shortly after it starts. Abruptly. 9 year old me was absolutely terrified of that. You don’t know what’s in it, if something is trying to get out of it, etc. It just shakes. It seems silly in retrospect, but the mystery behind it is what got me. I would go on to not finish Resi 4 for a few months after that, it shook me that bad. That kind of horror where your childlike mind just wanders to a dark place. Fast forward 15 years. I’m now 24, almost 25, and even though I know it happens it still bothers me to this day.
One thing I actually like about the entire video you actually use the sanity effects individual themselves like the video resetting and the quality of the dropping as an example alongside a fake video removal although that one was more easy to spot because it doesn't happen when you're watching a video the one that I see a lot happen is the quality somewhat dropping it could be my eyes are just something random and the sanity effects in-game are really good as well
my favorite part of this game will always be the Dr. maximillains monster autopsies mainly for how he goes crazy in a diferent way for each of the 3 gods that those enemies are affiliated with. ulyaoth: goes mad from the implications that these creatures mere existence brings. Chattur'gha: gets consumed by his hatred and loathing for the monsters going full crazy survivalist in the process Xel'lotath: grows more and more and more and more paranoid
This is one of the best Projared videos ever! Awesome that Jared is still going strong and putting out some of his best videos after so many years of doing it! Great job man!!!
Love this video! Very true to the spirit of the game and show Jared's love for said game. I haven't enjoyed a review video like this in a long time. Excellent work! It's really nice to see this game get some proper love, too. My brother and I picked it up on release day and waited until dark that night to play. Playing in the dark with the surround sound on was just really added to the experience and immersed you in a way that many games just weren't able to back then.
Is Jerd trying to tell me I've lost all my sanity with these effects? Listen buddy, 2020's tough on all of us, especially that new wall of skulls in my house.
Make sure you use a clear enamel spray on the skulls. It will help them keep their current coloration and prevent that lingering rot smell. That was one hell of a bad Christmas.
The most terrifying aspect of any medium is the unknowable. To lose that mystique is to lose all. You step into your kitchen. Pitch black. Freezing cold. As you slowly step forward, you suddenly become aware of a nearly imperceptible hum of something unknown. You reach for a light. The hum stops. It is just you. The darkness. The room. So quiet. You can hear your own heart beat. Is that your heart beat? A bead of sweat tickles the back of your neck. You reach around to wipe it away. Your hand finds something cold. Hard. Sharp. Trembling. then nothing. Flash! The light turns on. You spin around to see...nothing. No ones there. Nothing's there. You are surrounded by the familiar trappings. The off-white countertop. The dual door fridge. Everything you expect to see. In it's rightful place. You breath a sigh of relief. Stepping over your own still bleeding body, you go to bed, ready to be rid of this nightmare.
"Do you remember the first time a game made you feel terror?" Yes, in fact. It was Super Metroid. The moment Mother Brain stood up and gained that absolutely butt ugly body and smashed Samus into the wall with that rainbow laser, taking control away from the player made me throw the controller away and not play another Metroid game until like 12 years later....i was like 7.
For me, it was a PS1 game-the name of which I don't remember-about submarines and underwater portals. The opening cinematic had a guy in a submarine go through one of those portals, and it showed him screaming in terror as most of his flesh was melted off, except for his eyes. I was also seven.
First game to make me scared? Likely Minecraft. I remember living between two mountains, fog turned up because my computer is crap-ola. Everything being heavily veiled in fog was intimidating. I think it was _more_ scary on Peaceful mode. There was nothing, and no one. No excitement, rage, whatever. Just silence.
I'm gonna say this right now, the very beginning of this video evoked an old feeling of watching the Dragonstrike vhs from 20+ years ago and I'm here for it.
Oh my God, Jared is such a good reviewers that he just dominated me throughout that entire tension segment, like, he was so good at it that I was in his palm the entire damn time.
The very first game to scare me was Resident Evil 2. It would only take a few days of playing before I warmed up to it. The first game to TERRIFY me was Silent Hill 1. Holy crap. THAT was the game I dreaded playing, and I loved it.
One thing I will say is if possible, playing Eternal Darkness on an older style of TV would make the sanity effects much more believable. This is still the best horror game to me, and I'm not always a fan of horror games
Having the sanity effects going off throughout the video was so creative! I loved that it made the video really engaging, if I wasn't terrified of anything horror related you would have SOLD me on this game Edit: I'm into a lot more horror now and Ive played eternal darkness it's absolutely amazing
This is one of my favorite videos that projared has ever done because of how he does it and makes it so startling but cool and I found myself falling for every trick he played and even rewinding it to double check it was real
I was bingeing your old videos. I'm gonna say that all your videos, old and new, blend together perfectly and they all are high quality with their own spins and original commentary. Awesome Job. BTW, Resident Evil 2 was the first game that gave me legit fear. When you see that licker crawl across the window towards the next room, with the door to it right there that you HAVE to open, was a great mid-fuck.
Won't lie, the first few times the sanity effects happened it freaked me out like no other game had before, and the forth-wall breaking ones hit me the hardest! But that didn't deter me and I played through the game in its entirety, including doing the replays to unlock the true ending. Easily one of the best games of all-time in its own right, and one of the best on the Gamecube, and one of the best survival-horror games ever! Thanks for the awesome video and stay safe out there!
Wow I'm just so used to seeing those ads in the middle of videos that for some reason I didn't even notice this sanity effect till I rewatched that part.
"Did you notice how much the camera changed?" No, I was lost in your eyes LOVED the sanity tricks, laughed out loud when I saw them, they were just so well done and super charming. Was the upload and removal of the video earlier today one of the tricks?
If I can just say, there is so much personality in your eyes. They're just so expressive and bring out so much spark. It's like as soon as I see your face and see your eyes I can immediately tell what you're trying to sell with that look. And it works. Didn't expect to be simping and analyzing a youtuber's eyes tonight. Fun.
If not, hopefully he'll be able to play a few games of it once the plague is finally under control. Though I guess he could probably play it virtually in podcast form, using something like Roll20. Does Roll20 support Call of Cthulhu?
The turning down the quality got me for a second, this video was hella unique and entertaining. Good job jared! You're still one of my favorite youtubers since i found ur channel in 2015!
Also the magic system sounds similar to blood omens magic system since you had to collect runes in that game to extend kains magic meter and silicon knights also developed that game as well!
Mom worked at a Toys R Us and would get us games based on what the nerdy folk working there would suggest. So glad someone suggested this for us, was my big first leap into Lovecraftian nightmares.
After the first couple Insanity effects I was kept in expectation for the next one through the rest of the video. Each time I burst out laughing! Well played - nice sanity tricks Jared, love your humor XD
I just played this on my Twitch channel. The game has fallen into obscurity, so you can imagine my delight to see you cover this, Jerd. 3:53 goddamn that was so good, the entire time I watched that segment i swore that it was moving but it barely felt like it was and I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me then you said it and I felt so much relief but also chills with how good it works even if you do notice the camera change
If it comes to fear in a Game: i must say, Metroid Fusion does this job really well for a 2D Handheld Game. The Moments in this Game with SA-X makes you "don't want to play anymore, but want to play more!" at the same time.
I found out about this game when I wanted to rent the GCN version of the first Resident Evil, which was unavailable. The clerk recommended this one to me, claiming while he'd never played it, looking over the back of the box, he thought it'd be a good "Discount Resi Experience." Honestly, while I love the Resi franchise, this game has stuck with me longer than any of those! Thank you for reviewing my favorite psychological thriller!
Very well done! I loved the sanity effects you put in the video. The loss of resolution and the fake ad totally got me! I really wish they remaster Eternal Darkness some time, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon…
Also, here's a fun fact. Nintendo has patented the sanity effects, which is why other games that have sanity meters are simply limited to just the screen distorting and odd noises. You won't have any fourth wall breaking. Also, I literally freaked out when the game faked wiping my save from the memory card. The only other game that came close to matching the sanity effects in this game was when you encounter scarecrow for the first time in Arkham Asylum. Remember that part when the screen glitches out? Yea, I thought my graphics card overheated and wound up hard resetting my PC. I did a clean install of all my drivers and replayed the area. It happened again, I thought my GPU was toast. I had to look it up online and found it was party of the game.
I know that Jared will probably not see this, but your channel has really made me what i am today, with your dnd December videos intriguing me with dungeons and dragons, video game reviews making me laugh during tough times, but watching this video, even though all you went through, shows me that no matter the difficulties of life, you Can tough through it without having a great change of character.
Suddenly everybody started releasing videos about this game. DaveControl, The Salt Factory and now you. Maybe even more people. I mean, suspicious... and spooky!
Dude, nice acting at 3:35, the intensity and your voice in "and THEN" really surprised me! So surprised in fact that no, I didn't notice the camera changing...
One of the first games that spooked me was Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, an old rpg on sega genesis. In one mission you explore an abandoned spaceship, and as you slowly figure out what killed the crew, your party members are infected one by one by a deadly brain parasite. Intense stuff when you're like 8 years old :D
For me, I think the first time I truly felt fear in a game was my first playthrough of Mother 3 several years ago in the Chimera lab, where it basically becomes a horror game. I never was caught by the Ultimate Chimera, but I came close a few times, and my heart was beating out of my chest every time I had a close shave.

Played thru it in less than a week and I beat it. It was awesome tho.
Those little fuckers in the school that looked like dolls or some shit, dressed in like
? A nursing outfit ?
Or some shit? Lmfao I dunno
The memorable part for me was the spell casting. I thought it was so cool how you actually had to press a button for each word of a spell and that they would start out small and get longer yet more powerful.
The sanity effects were neat but I didn’t remember any of them until I watched this video.
I really wish they would make another one. Or at least a proper remake.
9:21 alright, that one got me
Mario 3 truly is the most terrifying game out there.
AVGN proved that it is the devil, so that must be true
@@jacobcrouch9999 was just about to say that 😂😂
That sun meant business
The moment the screen turned into the “this video is no longer available” thing I got a call and it kinda messed me up
I have UA-cam Premium, so the ad really confused me for a second. _"WHAAAAT? Where's the skip button?!"_
I had a deep chill when you showed the bath.
Even empty, even after 15 years, I still remember the fear of the bath scene.
Hp Lovecraft is such a cool author, his works are some of he most fascinating and mysterious. He also had a strange taste in cat names
To be fair, his dad named the cat that. HP Lovecraft just found it easier to just keep the name.
It was the 20's man, shit was different
Yes I’m aware
@@SalmonJonesTheMagnificent Even by 20s standards Lovecraft was really racist. Doesn't mean he wasn't a good writer, but yeah. Dude was really racist. Supposedly it was born more out of ignorance and isolation rather than actual hate, and that he regretted it later in life, though it's hard to find any confirmation of that beyond things he supposedly wrote to his friends.
That's a pretty kind way of saying he was a huge racist, makes me a bit suspicious of you man.
First game to really scare me was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
It was late, and it was the first ceiling master I'd ever seen.
Screamed like a baby.
yeah I think that was the first scare for a lot of us. for me at least the first scare in a game i _owned_
Body Harvest was probably second, that game had some really tense moments
I walked into the Ghoma fight in the Deku Tree completely unprepared at like 9 years old. I literally jumped from the couch to the TV to turn off the console lol
The scariest thing in OoT, to me at least, is the Dead Hand.
I never could explore the mini-dungeon down the well as a kid, just ran around until I found the monocle and rushed my way out. People who only know the 3DS version can't imagine how creepy Ocarina of Time was sometimes.
Also it took a year or two before I was able to go out the temple and through the marketplace as adult Link without playing the sun song first to freeze the zombies. x)
It took me YEARS to realise that the name "Roivas" is actually just "Savior" backwards.
Me
Just now
XD
...Mother of God!
Took me till just now. The hell?
TODAY YEARS OLD
Whoa
Bro, you actually got me a lot with those sanity effects throughout the video
That ending was depressing.
"What did this company do after?"
TL;DR: Fail.
He actually started another company and is developing a new game right now called "Deadhaus Sonata."
This was a true hidden gem of the GameCube era that needs to be remastered or at least put on a GameCube mini. Excellent video as always!
So I on my Part want to thank you Jared for beeing with us the past ten years and bringing ne so much Joy. I wish you all the best hope you still live creating these great videos .
Yeeeeah, my guess is that he isn't celebrating because he spent roughly an year offline
I love the cthulu references and nods. Hell they use ideas from lovecraft like crazy. I think the sanity meter could be much better these days, but the scare is limited these days for me. Good at the time of its release. Id love to revisit the game. Just so damn expensive.
I remember yelling at my friend for turning down the volume.
THAT was something
XD
Damn. "Did you even notice how much the camera changed?" Was actually REALLY well done.
That sucks really bad. Copies today are super expensive.
What would life be without parents disrespecting their children's property.
@@pphead9960 Well, you could always just emulate it.
At least it was just the one game. The day my friend went to college, his mom took every game and console he owned and threw them into the dumpster.
@@Schwarzorn that’s just awful. she didn’t even get money from it. like what’s the point of even doing that?
One thing I actually like about the entire video you actually use the sanity effects individual themselves like the video resetting and the quality of the dropping as an example alongside a fake video removal although that one was more easy to spot because it doesn't happen when you're watching a video the one that I see a lot happen is the quality somewhat dropping it could be my eyes are just something random and the sanity effects in-game are really good as well
13:35 I legit thought that was an actual ad you can tell I'm definitely someone who watches a lot of UA-cam videos
my favorite part of this game will always be the Dr. maximillains monster autopsies mainly for how he goes crazy in a diferent way for each of the 3 gods that those enemies are affiliated with.
ulyaoth: goes mad from the implications that these creatures mere existence brings.
Chattur'gha: gets consumed by his hatred and loathing for the monsters going full crazy survivalist in the process
Xel'lotath: grows more and more and more and more paranoid
9:21 Damnit!
11:10 omfg.
13:35 YOU DIDN'T GET ME THAT TIME!
This is an Amazing Game. That you would cover this of all the other halloween themed ones is a dream come true Jared. Thank you sincerely.
Oh, you got one of those too? I just assumed it came with the place.
Heh.
"Do you remember the first time a game made you feel terror?"
Yes, in fact.
"After all, did you even notice how much the camera changed?"
Yes, actually - well played
Best Chutulu game without having the actual Chutulu.
Oh my God, Jared is such a good reviewers that he just dominated me throughout that entire tension segment, like, he was so good at it that I was in his palm the entire damn time.
The care you put into editing this was fantastic. Even though I knew you would be doing some weirdness, you still had me checking my quality settings
I loved that it made the video really engaging, if I wasn't terrified of anything horror related you would have SOLD me on this game
Edit: I'm into a lot more horror now and Ive played eternal darkness it's absolutely amazing
13:35 you missed your chance to use a Raid Shadow Legends or AFK Arena ad skit for ultimate immersion.
Probably would've pressed charges for not having permission to show their games
@@Cameytoe but didn‘t Jared already make an entire video about AFK Arena because he works with them now?
Wow I'm just so used to seeing those ads in the middle of videos that for some reason I didn't even notice this sanity effect till I rewatched that part.
"Did you notice how much the camera changed?"
No, I was lost in your eyes
LOVED the sanity tricks, laughed out loud when I saw them, they were just so well done and super charming. Was the upload and removal of the video earlier today one of the tricks?
6:52 Hello there.
General Kenobi
I'll give it up Jared, you actually got me with the advertisement at 13:34. Well played. I saw through every other one but that one did get me.
Fun.
6:16. Hidden subscribe button in upper right corner.
I know Jared's played D&D a bunch, but I wonder if he's ever dabbled in one of Chaosium's editions of Call of Cthulhu?
Probably not, otherwise he would have made a CoC joke during his Eternal Darkness playthrough.
@@RufusKyura Good point.
If not, hopefully he'll be able to play a few games of it once the plague is finally under control.
Though I guess he could probably play it virtually in podcast form, using something like Roll20. Does Roll20 support Call of Cthulhu?
@@GmodPlusWoW Let me look that up.
Back, yes it does.
This game not being ported on the Switch is a sin
This really was lightning in a bottle, and I wish a the spiritual successor had been funded on Kickstarter. Hopefully we can get something like this soon.

3:53 goddamn that was so good, the entire time I watched that segment i swore that it was moving but it barely felt like it was and I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me then you said it and I felt so much relief but also chills with how good it works even if you do notice the camera change
I'm glad you are still making content. Great video!!
"I hope i see a booby" thats what i say when I see a horror game cover lol. Love your new and old vids man, keep it up!
This is definitely one of your best videos yet! Haven't lost your touch
I love the sanity effects in the vid really made me feel uneasy watching this. Really hope one day we get another eternal darkness
That's not a very fun fun fact. In fact, it's quite depressing.
That sucks because I feel like some indie studios could do a ton of cool stuff with that mechanic
Wow, I've always wanted a review about this game! Great job putting in you're own sanity effects!
I've been watching your playthrough of this game and loving it, and man, watching your edits of this video is so perfect, great work!
I’m so glad to see this game getting the appreciation it truly deserves. And what a well made video to boot. Great stuff
Suddenly everybody started releasing videos about this game. DaveControl, The Salt Factory and now you. Maybe even more people. I mean, suspicious... and spooky!
And also let's mention (THE VIRUS)
Hmmm, maybe mantorok is at it?
Better use pargon

gotta get all of them bananas
Legit dude, that is also the first game that scared me. That gosh darn first bossfight
*HE*
Huh. Donkey Kong Country for me (that game over screen still haunts me...)
damn, that one scared the hell out of me back then
5:24 putting this up as the first projared illusion but also actually terrified me that I thought my IPad was broken. Thanks man
Dude, nice acting at 3:35, the intensity and your voice in "and THEN" really surprised me!
So surprised in fact that no, I didn't notice the camera changing...
This game and this video is the literal representation of the meme:
"They had us in the first half not gonna lie".
As in based on the old TV show Buck Rogers in the 25th Century?
@@shaynehughes6645 Actually, it's based on the tabletop rpg.
To this day, this is one of my favourite games. It would please me to no end to get a new game like this.
The Ad sanity effect got me, i wont lie
