  • Some guests at parks are awesome! Some you wish would just leave. What's the difference? How can you be a good one instead of a bad one, and what shouldn't you do?
    A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a PhotoPass photographer at Walt Disney World and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and train robber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at Silver Dollar City. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...

    We recently went on my daughter’s wish trip to Disney, Universal, and Sea World. My heart was warmed by the kindness of most of the cast members and employees. However, we felt terrible in certain situations by going in the front of the lines. After expressing this to one of the cast members after getting many dirty looks, she very kindly told me, “your sweet girl has to wait hours and hours in waiting rooms, for test results, in therapies, etc. She often has the lower hand, and she deserves to have the upper hand for once.” That meant so much to me. I know other guests don’t understand, but during that trip, it didn’t matter after that. So I appreciate thoughtful, wonderful people such as herself, and that is something I will always remember.

      That cast member did a wonderful job explaining why we were very happy to allow Make a Wish and similar kids skip the lines. The grumps can stuff it. When I would occasionally have one complain, I'd tell them that if they really want their kids to go through all of the stuff the Make a Wish kids go through because of what they are dealing with, just so they could skip a line, then they really had their priorities out of whack. That would usually shut them up. Thankfully those are really the rare minority. The vast majority of guests I dealt with were very happy to step aside and wait a little extra for them.

      SirWillow, that was a wonderful way for you to handle them, and I completely agree! Thank you for the encouragement. I think many of them didn’t realize why we were going ahead of everyone. The majority of flack was at character meet and greets. We were actually there when you were in January, but unfortunately didn’t get the chance to meet up. My policy is: you never know what someone is struggling with, so it’s just best to be kind. It takes nothing away from your flame to light another’s candle.

    One tradition that I've made with my daughters is to say thank you a TON at Disney. We thank the people watching the line. We particularly thank the clean up crew for keeping the park magical and clean. We give specific reasons for our thanks - and sometimes end up in conversations with the workers. At the very least, it clearly makes the cast members feel appreciated and it allows my daughters to learn to appreciate the hard work that goes into their trip.

      wanupgurl we do it everywhere but make a extra effort at Disney. My three daughters almost have a competition going. When they see someone picking up trash they get all excited to run up to the person and give good reasons to thank them. They've been given pins and stickers and things, but that's not the point. We talk about the smiles we bring to the cast members c: and how we help make it magic for them like they do for us.

    I ran into a lady who thought Disney controlled the ducks. We were waiting in line to see Tinkerbell and friends with the kids. A lady behind us had her daughter who was about 3-4. It just happened a momma duck just came through the fence and was walking across the pathway with her ducklings following. We stood back and admired them “aww how cute!” Her little girl ran up and tried to grab one of the ducklings. My friend and I both shouted “no! Don’t touch them!” The woman was angry we had yelled at her daughter. We told her that the momma duck might have attacked if her daughter had managed to get a duckling. The mom then told us that they were Disney ducks and would never attack a guest. She stayed huffy at us the entire time we were in the line.

    • @WPUpioneer
      @WPUpioneer 5 років тому +3

      Wow. Lady wasnt too bright. The ducks are still wild and will attack if they feel threatened like any other creature! And taking one of their babies as pets wont help! They wouldnt do that to the tiger in animal kingdom! "Disney tigers would never attack a guest" *tiger mauls guest* to quote George from another of his videos "I really dont wanna see you get trampled by the elephant, stomped by the rhino, gored by the water buffalo, bit by the nile crocodile..."

    We visited WDW a lot with my mom and dad. They loved it and the time they spent with my kids. My mom always had to shop usually when we were all dead tired, to buy gifts for Christmas. So, we would have to waaaaaait, forever, while she would look at every single item in a gift shop. We were in one of the Epcot countries and she bought quite a lot of souvenirs, gave the heavy bag to my Dad who put it on the seat of our stroller. It was a double with a canopy. I was off somewhere and as I walked back to them they were frantic. The bag was gone. What? Are you sure? Who would steal in Walt Disney World? My mom hoped maybe it was lost and somebody returned it so she went back into the shop. No dice. Then something happened that blew my mind. The cast member asked her if she had the receipt. She gave it to them, the CM went around the shop and replaced every item she bought that was stolen. Hundreds of dollars in merch. And the CM apologized for what happened. Which, my mom told her was unnecessary and not her fault. She still tells that story and that was probably 25 years ago.

    This isn't Disney Related, I too was an amusement industry worker, a ride operator. A couple of questions from people we heard all the time. "How many tickets is this ride?" Really?! I worked on the really big major, spec. Rides, so here's another one, "Will I lose all the stuff out of my pockets?" My reply, "The things you see and hear hitting this deck are not sound effects for your enjoyment and ride experience." Or just look at them and point blank tell them, "Get On!!" Then watch the rain of items hit the deck. I totally agree with you in your comment of "Ask" and "Ask nicely." Will get you way farther than being a jerk about things. And of course the Golden rule, do unto others as they would do unto you."

    We drove from Arizona to Disneyland last year for a family trip. When we got back to the hotel one our 2nd night, my husband realized he had lost his key fob. We went straight to town hall the following morning and explained what happened. They were super friendly and helpful. They made a few calls and directed us to lost and found. Fortuantely, a cast member found the key fob on a ride and turned it in! They truly made a really bad situation into a good one! Super awesome, friendly, and helpful people!

    I wish park employees enforced line cutting more than they do. So many kids/adolescents line cut brazenly, and then there’s another huge category of people who line cut all the time because they don’t realize that having someone hold a place in line for them is line cutting.

    the whole waiting until you get to the counter to order food drove my mom crazy! the only issue for me is I am so nearsighted even with glasses I just can't see the menu unless i'm up close to it. but yeah if it's not a vision issue and you're just chatting then that annoys me. like i worked in fast food and I would see it all the time when it wasn't a vision issue.
    also i seriously think everyone should be required to work in some form of customer service at some point in there lives! people would be so much nicer!

      @StamfordBridge 6 років тому +5

      Kitty Starr Hear, hear! As for the vision thing, I usually start by trying to go up to the side of food lines in hopes that I can see the menu that way. I just wish all park food places posted menus outside the front door. It’s what almost all restaurants here in NYC do.

    I would like to mention obeying park rules, and also not spoiling the magic. A few years ago a friend and I were riding Big Thunder Mountain and it had a breakdown while we were on the third lift. Since it was not something they could fix quickly, they had to evacuate the ride (or as Disney calls it, an in-show exit). This meant walking through back-stage areas inside the mountain and the cast member asked us to not take photos or video, so we respected that.
    Other examples would be characters and special effects - I once had an interaction with Push, the Talking Trash Can in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. Although I knew who the operator was, I continued to interact directly with Push - all I can say was that he (she?) was very excited to be on UA-cam.

    You mentioned theme park cast members being happy to take a picture with your camera if you asked politely, and it reminded me of one of the best customer service moments I've experienced (albeit at Universal instead of Disney, sorry if that's a faux pas on the channel); my mom and I were trying to take a selfie in front of one of the signature items at one of the restaurants, and one of the hosts (? it was long ago enough that I can't really remember the role) saw us struggling to get everything in frame and offered to take the picture for us. Not really related to anything in the video, but it was really meaningful how above and beyond these people go to make sure guests have a good time and it baffles me why anyone would intentionally not be polite to them.
    Also watching your bad guest videos reminds me of my mom because both of y'all have similar complaints (I mean this as the highest possible compliment).

    While waiting for the Main Street Electrical parade I had my grandson sitting on the curb with me when i saw a lady with a little girl that was so tired that she was crying. I told the lady that her little girl could have my seat and I would stand behind my grandson. When the parade started all of a sudden her husband and 2 little boys showed up, and I got pushed back almost to the shop we were in front of. Her 6 foot tall husband had no qualms about pushing me aside and standing in front of me. I'm 5 feet nothing inches tall. My grandson kept calling for me, but they wouldn't let me get to him. He finally got up and came to me and we just left the park. Sometimes being nice to people just doesn't work out.

    I got a first class upgrade and a hotel stay in Vegas because I was so understanding and nice to the ticket agents at the airport when my flight was cancelled due to the airplane being broken. I felt bad because people were so mean and angry at the ticket agents for something that is out of their control. I wanted to make things easy for them. I told the ticket agent that my college dorm was open for two more days so I need something to accommodate that closure date. I did not expect to get bonuses by being nice. But I was so easy and accommodating that the ticket manager hooked me up. I did not plan on having a day in Vegas but it was a fun adventure.

    Okay, I'm blushing a little bit now. Back in 2009, we went to Disney World and decided to visit all four parks in one day because we were only in Orlando for a couple days and we wanted to check out Sea World as well. I was kind of looking forward to seeing something specific in Epcot, and I didn't notice anything about specific times. I knew when the parks opened, and I knew they were open kind of late, so I figured we could save that for last. We get to Epcot, and realize that the place I wanted to visit literally closed a half hour before we got there.
    Not really a big deal, I was a little disappointed, but I think it might have even been on the map and I just missed it. I don't quite remember, it was several years ago, but I remember we had one of those, "Oh, wait, it says it right here, my mistake" moments. In my defense, I'd never been there before and was kind of overwhelmed. XD Other than that, I think we did pretty good!

    A good tip to help save a little bit money: If you go to a quick service food station in the park, and ask specifically for a cup of water with ice (Not a bottle, but a cup), most, if not all theme/amusement parks are required by law to give that to you for free.

    At silver dollar city I rode my first loop roller coaster. I probably rode it about 4 times before someone stopped me and informed me I was too short to ride (we didn't notice the measuring spot for some reason). I was like 11 so I was pretty sad about it but the guy gave me a t shirt to make me feel better. This past year, we took our church youth group to SDC and one of the girls was too small to ride outlaw run so the guy that checks the lap bar gave her a coin to bring back when she was tall enough to get her and her party to the front of the line. Sometimes theme park workers are the nicest people.

    A little kindness and civility really does go a long way, and I'm glad you're reiterating that point. I remember one time in an Applebee's, our orders were taking a really long time to come out, and my Grandfather, a former HS teacher, let a server know, being as civil and calm as possible about it. Well, the manager, who turned out to be a former student of his, ended up having our entire meal comped.
    I've never seen the value of pitching a hissy fit just to get free stuff. This seems particularly unwise when dealing with people who serve food, if you get my meaning...

Thank you for this PSA, my dear departed Granny thanks you too!

    My one HUGE recommendation for any Disney trip: DOWNLOAD MY DISNEY EXPERIENCE ON YOUR PHONE!!! You can make your dining ressies there, you can get three Fastpass reservations a month before you go; you have maps, times, EVERYTHING there! It's so helpful, especially if you're staying on-site!
    Another suggestion: If you have kids, DO NOT drag them to places they don't want to be! We were on the monorail with a couple of jackwagons who dragged their kids to the Extra Magic Hours at Magic Kingdom. One was fine with it, but the other one was very pale and didn't look very happy. He absolutely wanted to be back at the hotel and resting. I'm pretty sure they had a sick kid on their hands, but they dragged him to MK anyway. Betting he got his revenge that night...all night.

    • @rainyrouge5123
      @rainyrouge5123 6 років тому

      Don't drag your kids around and force them to do things in general.I feel like some parents go to places like Disney with the attitude that,since they're having a fantastic and exciting day in the most magical place on Earth,their kid won't get tired or cranky or overstimulated and won't want to not do anything.In reality,kids get tired really easily,yes even at a theme park,and sometimes they don't want to or are scared to do certain things,yes even at a theme park.Shoving your kid from attraction to attraction and character to character is not making the day more magical.

    These are all good things! I know when I was at Disney world there was a family in line that sneered at us because they were in the normal line and we were using fastpasses. They loudly started talking about how "Disney doesn't tell you at all about those fastpass things or how to use them so how are you supposed to know?". We just moved right on by. If they'd been nicer I'd gladly have helped them (As I did with a few people there) but I just don't see how you can spend all that money to go somewhere so cool and not prep yourself a bit with some knowledge and tip sites! A fast Google search does wonders. :D
    Later that day we were almost run over by a group fleeing down the Flight of Passage fastpass line while we were going up. I think they hopped over the line, walked all the way up and then realized there was a second checkpoint. XD

    Be nice to the park employees. Kings Island doesn't have a single rider system in place. Mostly, we don't need it but last year was the debut of Mystic Timbers. I got so many front seat rides because I told the station attendant that I was single rider and was willing to pair up. I use this as an extreme example, but in any service industry you get the attitude you give.

    Great video! It is not in my nature or my family's nature to complain. However, at one of our trips to Disneyland Paris we had a couple of mishaps in our cabin. Two pieces of furniture broke because they were unstable and the electricity went off twice. So we called up to the front desk to see what could be done and they immediately offered to move us to an upgraded cabin. A cast member came out to help us collect our stuff and he was so kind! When we arrived at the new cabin they had put out souvenirs for us. They were just two pens and some mugs, but it was so lovely! We still talk about that to this day and it made it one big fun adventure rather than a problem!

    this video literarily made my day, lol!; thank you for another great video! : ) my pet-peev as a long time disney world guest, i even get extremely irritated by dumb founded other guests of a theme park visiting a park, i feel sorry for those disney world cast members for example that has to deal with those type of guests that do the dumbest stuff, lol! : ) that is also my pet-peev as a guest, were someone stands in line for so long when a bunch of other guests are behind them trying to wait patiently then those end up either leaving the line having to go somewhere else as to were they wanted that particular eating place inside the park in the first place; SOME PEOPLE CAN BE SO SELFISH OR/AND SELF-CENTERED!

    13:30 --> I'm also a employee in a themepark on the rides department. This is something I see daily and it can be frustrating.
    One of the rides I work on is a logflume ride where there are 6 seat in each boat. Sometimes people wait 10+ minutes in a line to start deciding who is gonna sit in front/middle/back when they enter the loading area (which is a non-stop conveyor)... There are also sometimes bigger groups who need to decide how to split up after they reach the loading area.

    I've found, at Disney world, being nice to Cast members is EVERYTHING. If they tell you no, it's usually a no and drop it. The exception MAY be if something requires a reservation, and even then it isn't guaranteed but they can TRY to find an open spot last minute if youre nice to them. I've gotten lucky this way with Oga's cantina and Savi's workshop in Galaxy's edge. Usually if you phrase it as "I didnt remember/didnt know this needed a reservation, I apologize. Is there anything at all you can do? If not its okay" usually they will try and accommodate as best they can, as was what happened to me with building my lightsaber (Sidnee, you are AWESOME and I will never forget that if youre reading this!) And usually when I go down there, my fiancee calls me "Mr Kudos/Mr. Cast compliment as I will LITERALLY hand them out like crazy! I try to make everyone's day when I'm down there, even the characters. I am very into pin trading and usually if I get a duplicate pin of one I know I have already (common in mystery packs and even though I have over 200 pins im pretty good at remembering what I have) ill give those to characters or cast members I like. It goes over very well. Rey even got one of my R2D2 pins on my last visit and spent extra time interacting with me even though it was a socially distant interaction. There was even a cast member in magic Kingdom that wound up doing something for me that usually they only do for passholders. I wont mention the cast members name or what they did in case Disney management reads this and I dont wanna get anyone fired, but that was all because I took a minute to ask about her day and have a conversation with her. Being nice to cast members DEFINATELY gets you far in Disney!

    Sounds like good guidelines for living! Follow the rules...do your research....be mindful/considerate of others...ask for help...be kind. As a former (now retired) staff member at a university, I dealt on a daily basis with "my kid is special and you should break or bend the rules to accommodate him." No. Not happening. Oh please write to the President because he will just kick your complaint back to us. I remember several years ago, a man was killed at Cedar Point because something fell out of his pocket on a ride and he hopped the fence to retrieve it, only to be hit by the Iron Dragon and killed instantly.

    i just remembered one story from six flags magic mountain, was working main panel at the roller coaster i was assigned to, and while waiting for the train to come back, we were only running 1 i think, i saw a kid at the gate on the load side, well we have markers to indicate height of people and i noticed this little girl was not quite tall enough. so over the pa, i called for a height check for that row, and sure enough, not tall enough, she came all the way across along with her father (im guessing) and the father started to pitch a fit, so instead of my normal cheer filled attitude i got really serious really quick and explained about 3 or 4 times why she couldn't ride. he even went as far as to say he wouldn't hold the park responsible for anything that happened. course in the back of my mind, i knew that would not happen. so i literally put my foot down, and told him. I can't allow it. and told him such. and told him i would not budge an inch. he accepted that, and they went on their way and the rest of my crew looked like they had seen a ghost, they could not believe that I being a fun filled person could act like that and be that serious. i think they were more shocked than the guest was.

    SirWillow, the "silliest" guests I have ever gotten are people trying to scan in with Disney tickets at Universal. Not even joking. Most of the time I tell people to get a parking refund and then tell them to go I-4 West and get off on exit 65 (for Hollywood Studios... Usually that's what they're looking for. They confuse the two studios).
    Although one guest had Disney tickets, but came to me really wanting Universal. They asked if they could exchange them at guest services, etc. It astounds me how people don't even realize how they're two completely different competing companies, lol.

    What do you think about people who spend 15-20 minutes with the characters? I've sat behind people in line where these people had to get 20 pictures OR their kids were playing with the characters...for ever. And the character just keeps playing with them. Which is a nice experience for that family to hang out with the characters...for 15-20 minutes...but there's a long line waiting and those characters don't stay out for all that long, they have to go in to take a break.

    At Dorney Park, we would not let a line cutter ahead of us. She was becoming loud and insisted on pushing her way through. We were lucky enough that the several groups ahead of us were also not letting her through. Park security became aware of the problem and escorted out of line. We were getting on a water slide so we were high up on the steps. Down below we could see the park security removing her from the park. As they were leading her out, she was yelling obscenities at us! Very bad guest behavior!!

    In leu of the recent Disney cruise incident...I can not emphasis this enough of you have booked a theme park package like Disney. I don't care who books your vacation..read the information provided for you. If you have questions..call and ask.in advance. And don't think you are exempt from the rules.
    And even if you are just going for a day trip to a theme park and someone in your group has medical or physical limitations. Contact the park in ADVANCED!!! That way the park can be prepared for you and they can decide if your issues is to much of a liability for them. And then be understanding. It's up to them to decide not you!!

    At Disney I had an issue with the app. I could not see when my fast passes where or use the map part. The cast members at guest services where eager to help. I did make a point to shoot an email to let them know later as well. I also had a hard time finding my car because the signage in the lots at Magic Kingdom was not as good as animal kingdom. I made a point to tell them that these two issues did not ruin my trip but were slight inconveniences that could be improved. I also made a point to give kudos to the face characters and attendants especially the people who close the line.
    My experience at Sea World was slightly different. I ask two employees where I was according to the map. Neither knew. Or where lockers where or an atm .... security guys were real nice. I had asked if it was ok for me to have food in the stadium (yes) and we chatted about the long closed Ohio location.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  6 років тому +1

      My first recommendation- DON'T go the two weeks around Christmas/ New Year's. If that's what you are thinking, get that thought out of your head right now. They are the busiest weeks of the year at the parks and they will close most of them by noon because they reach capacity. You don't want to be anywhere near them. 45 minute long lines for the bathrooms are not something you want to experience.
      As for where to go, see what fits in your budget and time plans. Disneyland in CA you can plan 4 days, maybe 5 to see everything, and then if you want more days to see the rest of the area. If you're thinking Florida then you're really looking at least a week just for Disney.

    A lot of these also apply to your travel to the park - especially on your flight! A tip I learned was also from a former cast member turned UA-camr. If you have young kids and you're flying to go on your vacation treat the flight crew extremely kindly because when your kids start screaming or your baby's diaper stinks up the plane everyone will be looking at you. When boarding, have one of the kids hand the greeting attendant on the plane (not at the gate) a small bag of treats. Even if it's just $10 worth of chocolate from the airport. It makes a huge difference! Our flight to Disney was great and once in the air every member of the flight crew stopped by to say hi and thank my 2 year old nephew. They also provided some 3D puzzles of airplanes for him to build. They were also nice and joking when his brother decided to fill his diaper and caused a few rows of the plane to start gagging.
