I was 11 at the time. We moved to America and I didn't speak a single word that I could understand. Daytime TV, Jerrry Springer, Jenny Jones, and Saturday Morning Cartooons. That's what made me be accepted. And THIS song. This was my first CD my brother gave me to play on my Phillips BoomBox I bought with my own money I earned delivering news-papers.
This was filmed at the Staten Island Mall. My friend Kenny is the guy at the beginning with the blue hat and eyebrow rings. I was delivering Snapple there the day this was being filmed. So many memories. Some things are still identical but the food court is completely relocated and now there’s stores in its place. That Cheesesteak place still exists in an updated form at the new food court. Sorry just wanted to drop some fun facts, all love ❤️
My question is-- the kids sneering at the older adults---how old are they now and what are they doing? I'm so curious. PS--That's cool that you were there during the filming!
I've actually been there. Go figure. I stop to visit in-laws once a year while traveling north--and I've been there a grand total of once. Hmmm...will be up there again this summer. I may just have to visit the mall.
Disagree. This song was actually ahead of its time, it sounds like the foreshadowing of the '00s... I'd be honored if you guys would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE by the New Radicals and BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY by the Verve in tribute to 2 of the most iconic anthems of the late 90s era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.

You probably know this, but Gregg Alexander got tired of the exhausting promotional rat race and split the band just before their gorgeous ballad second single "Someday We'll Know" was released to focus on writing hits for others.

Fisher Sam Fisher My sister gave up on life in 2016. She was a loving person, miss her every day. Gregg Alexander has written many songs including Lost Stars, music helps me..
Karen Demetrio I am so sorry beyond words. My boyfriend of four years and many loved ones died unexpectedly last year...I'm glad you're watching and hearing this song right now. Even in the midst of the darkest times we shouldn't give up. To those we loved and lost....we have to pick up the torch for them and live for them always keeping them alive within us. I know you can, and your sister is with you. Much love....there's not enough of that these days in the world.
The 1990s were like the quiet, well behaved younger sibling who did well in school and made his parents proud compared to the 1980s. Those of us who grew up in the 1980s understand exactly what I mean. 😁
Agreed. I wish the video was as lighthearted and buoyant as the song. It almost makes it… but for that streak of meanness towards others that runs through it. I blame the video director/writer. I won’t watch the video again… but I’ll crank up the tune!
@@sunndog5715 You mean the "streak of meanness" towards the money grabbing, greedy, egotistical, self-centered Yuppie's? I guess they're people, too! Lol
That just hits me in my soul! Music is universal divine energy from the almighty. If someone can't feel this vibe then they need help and resuscitation
Well said Martin. I have often comment to friends about that very thing. Little did we know that the craziness of the past few years was in our futures. It was a good time with a cool vibe. Cheers!
@@DomPeriod I remember sitting around a fire with my friends in late 2000 or early 2001, drinking and hanging out. We were all 17, 18, 19 years old. I looked around and said, "You know, we have all these problems with money and jobs and grades and relationship drama and the rest. But one day, we're going to look back on this as the good old days and wish we could go back." They mostly just laughed, because our problems were oh so serious. But I was right. The years since have just gotten worse and worse. American society is sick. Poisoned, really, since it was deliberate. And, once my generation dies, no one will remember what it used to be like. The optimism and good feeling. The laughter and jokes and humorous takes that no one is 'allowed' to have anymore, because of woke Twitter lynch mobs and crybullies who want your life destroyed if you make them feel bad. Going more than two years without another ginned up batch of race riots, coincidentally always in the summer before elections. God, can you remember back before everyone was fat and diabetic?! I loved my country, and I enlisted in the Army to protect her after 9/11. I felt compelled. But now? I can't imagine feeling that way anymore. Everything is polluted with lies and hatred and insanity. Many openly wished us to die because they were mad about politics. Remember 'we'll support the troops when they frag their officers?' I do. I was one of those troops. It's sad. But when I hear this old, good music, I can feel like I did before it all went wrong. I can forget that there was just a Congressional hearing about whether 12 year olds should be able to cut out their genitalia and pretend to be the opposite sex, or if they should be made to wait until they're the ripe and mature age of 16. I can forget how much I've come to hate this culture. Though it does make me feel sorry for today's kids, who have known nothing else and think this shit is normal.
Martin, you speak total nonsense. MANY more people were racist, homophobic and transphobic in the 90s and 2000s than now, you clown, and you know it. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. People are LESS REPRESSED now than 20-30 years ago. FACT!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
_I feel the music in you_ It's encouraging, supportive. It reaches out and puts a friendly hand on your shoulder to comfort. Have you ever been to a bus station, park, coffee shop, where ever, and saw someone whose shoulders are slightly slumped and looking out a lonely window. Then there's all the people who walk right past that person. They might even rudely bump into them. Well this song is for those people. It pushes back and protects. It believes for you, when you can't _Your in harms way_ _I'm right behind_ There's solace in sound
@@srimaddukuri No that would be the 60's. 80's were about the coming Armageddon, Cold War remnants, Gen X disillusion, robots taking over, and nihilistic yuppy culture.
gotta say, this song is about my own personal liberation. 10 years ago i was a complete junkie...homless, messed up, and wondering when i would eventually die. Fought many battles since. Grew up on this song and 184m views is grossly understated 😅😅😅😅 If people listen and take the message into their hearts, we will live in a merrier and more peaceful world❤❤❤❤ Thank you for this song!!
I used to HATE this song when it came out. It was so overplayed and I personally thought it was so corny. But being in my mid-30s, burned out, jaded, in debt to my eyeballs, and depressed beyond measure, watching this video of the band and people running around a mall in the late 90s gives me this really sad yet joyous nostalgia
If I wasn´t so depressed this song would be able me feel nostalgia. I just know nothing will shine as brigh as before ever again and I've allready forgotten what brightness was like... (there were tremendous bursts of dark moments back then too, mind you, but the weigth is so much more gigantic now...).
Think this song came out in the mid 90's , but you were close enough. Yeah, back when going to the mall was the thing to do. I always thought this was kind of a weird - but good - song. I don't find it weird anymore and I really enjoy it now.
This song is what you call a guilty pleasure. It's total cheese, but it's a peppy, feel-good song that can change your mood for awhile if you're feeling a bit down...
Hey, when a legend like Joni Mitchell says she was impressed by this song in an interview with _Rolling Stone_ back in April of 2000, you know it's more than just cheese. She said: "The only song I have liked in a long time is The New Radicals' song. I love that song. That's the first song since I was a teenager that I rushed to the radio to turn up. I like the harmony. I like the passion in his voice. I love the song, you know, 'You got the music in you,' and I love the punk irreverence of it. Now, that's my kind of punky white boy."
Same here ... Yesterday I drove home from work and it came on, I took a detour so I could listen to it properly and it's one of just few songs that actually make me cry. I've been sick of modern reality for years now.
When I was a child I was molested by a evil force and this song saved my life. I remember locking myself in my bedroom closet and I NEVER wanted to see the daylight because I thought no one would believe me. I would play this song over and over on my walkman and finally mustered enough will power to put it behind me and carry on with my life. This was 28 years ago and Im proud to say I never gave up and I have a family of my own. Moral of the story........ You have a reason to live and NEVER GIVE UP.
I'm so sorry you went through that I was a victim myself no one did believe me or listen to me my own parent knew what was happening to me and didn't care they wanted to keep the sob around I was 12 and wanted to end my life I felt dirty I hated myself all though it wasn't my fault there's some sick ppl in this world I still wanted to end it this song helped me that 1 lyric don't give up you got a reason to live literally helped save my life I thought no this isn't worth I would be putting the end of my previous life over something I couldn't change I thought maybe I could help other ppl that have gone through it may be that's why I've lived a life of hell to help others through their pain and problems your strong your still here and I'm proud of you your a strong person and a fighter that's amazing be proud of yourself for being strong if you need someone to talk to I got you I wish you peace love and good things to happen to you
good for you ..so inspirational . I too experienced alot of issues in my childhood and I never made it to your level of having a relationship and a family.
This song for me is like the closing song of the 90's for some reason! It makes me somewhat emotional. It's like a great period of time is over and now we going on the next phase.
@@mike47734 i like how the older generations always lumps all music made in this decade into "music nowadays" pretending like music isn't a diverse category, not just mumble rap
The New Radicals, no doubt a 'one hit wonder' but when you're one hit is one of the greatest songs ever made...that ain't so bad. I'll still be listening to this in the year 2100.
I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when this song came out. I was in my final stretch of college and 1000 miles away from home. This song put the smile on my face and gave me the motivation to make it all the way through graduate school in a successful career. This is one of the great songs of the 90s.
This song helped me get thru one of the worst times of my life, after a great friend of mine was killed. I listened to it constantly in spring of 1999. A one hit wonder maybe, but a damn good one and one that I will always be happy exists.
This song saved my life about ten years ago. I was so depressed I was thinking of running into a tree while I was driving home. All of a sudden your song came on! I started crying...Thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️ I won't give up!
I have the same damn story! By chance, heard it on the radio and it yanked me out of a deep spiral. Sounds a bit corny now, but I've loved it ever since.
Your stories touch me. I had a bad accident and died. I found Jesus! And asked to come back to my family to take care of them, Christ told me I had to live for him and He would heal me. I'm so glad I found God!!!! He's not to far away. Just reach out to Him, He would love to hear from you!!! Shawn I.
Timeless indeed. When I saw this was uploaded in 2009 I told my friend I couldn't believe the song was already that old. He laughed and said it was from around 1980. Turns out it's 1998. We had no idea.
Haha, funny you say that. This is the third version ive listened to in a row. I heard it for just a second on a commercial and looked up. I hadn't heard it in years and i dont remember likingbit so much. Definitely a good song.
Chic’s ‘Good Times’ has that same melancholic quality you describe. It was also a song written just before the end of a decade with BIG changes just around the corner (Reagan/AIDS era and Bush/911/Iraq era respectively). Coincidence?
It does something that not a lot of songs do these days...it has a buildup. Pop songs today go straight for the hook, I guess to keep the listener from hitting skip.
@@superscottochristie Now you don’t really spend the entire day at the mall. Back in the 90’s, I would get dropped off and spend 6 hours causing shenanigans with my friends. Most of the time we didn’t even buy anything.

No joke this song is the reason I’m still here. Heard this on surfs up as a kid and it’s just always been one of those songs that I go back to when I lose hope. Wish I could have been born just a little earlier to fully appreciate this.
Dude. Thats why i like this song so much. Fucking surfs up. That movie is so goddamn good i cant even. Dont even surf, never surfed, nor will i ever. But that movie brings me to tears, at this song especially. Im glad you get it
One of the best songs ever written, whenever I feel down I hear these lyrics and they mean so much. I remember when it was released and whenever I heard the intro I already had a huge smile on my face!! You got a reason to live..
I had no idea how incredible and how well constructed these lyrics were as a high school kid. I graduated in 2003. Never realized how deep this song is. What a great masterpiece
Correct 1990s-late 2000s. For the people that were born in the Mid 2000s to early 2010s the song means to them the Biden Inauguration Day January 20th 2021
Must be roughly the same age as you. Played it to my kids (9 and 6) cos I thought they might like it, and they noticed how brilliant the video is. "Look, the police (actually security guards but nvm) have come to try to stop the party, and they've caught them in a net"
Same 2005 graduate here. I did not appreciate this enough when I was teenager when this was brand new. Now I'm 36 and like ooohh...damn that's gooood! Haha
Its happening! We are bringing back the 90s!!! Have u noticed commercials playing 90s hits? The 2010s saw alot of 80s style and hits...."I love the 70s show" before that.....time to reboot the 90s since u know they have no original ideas etc anymore....i live in the 60s, 90s, 80, etc music in my mind always anyway
@@chrisdardar9445 People always tend to think their era was better, but regarding music there is no doubt that the 90s were far better than the 2000's and 10's, and I really think better than the 80's. "Music" now sounds like bad porn.
The track is an anthem encouraging resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics address the struggles of growing up in a world of opposition and how they can be overcome. It is a reminder that hard work and dedication pay off, and that you get out of life whatever you put into it. The theme of the song is that if you want to make it in life, you need to take chances, push through difficult times, and never let go of your beliefs.
I agree but it also warns us about the dangers of consumerism in a capitalistic society obsessed with instant gratification and worldliness. In a way, the song is also saying “be real, and don’t worry about keeping up with the jones”. In essence, the theme also states-don’t loose your true self for what has no substance, don’t loose your essence. “You got the music in you”
This song is two minutes too long, a precursor of the whining generation of snotty asshole kids and the pussified adults that cater to these retards. Grunge and whatever this crap is defined as, ushered in the first wave of pouty and moody kids that prove that, maybe class systems exist for a good reason.
Listening to this in 2023 with a renewed appreciation. My goodness, it's a good song, isn't it? Great chords, great sound, splendid lyrics and wonderfully sung. Takes me right back to the 90s, but even better now. We didn't realise how good we had it back then, and we need optimism like this now more than ever.
Was having a bad day, thinking about all thats bad thats happened this year, went to have a nap, woke up like adam sandler in click and this song popped in my head, realized im still alive and still have so much potential 😁 Great comment, this song is timeless and so valuable helping someone shift their mindset to a more positive one!

Crazy how it's been 25 years for this one already. The '90s were such a wild time to be alive as a teenager! Best days ever.

Agreed. I wish the video was as lighthearted and buoyant as the song. It almost makes it… but for that streak of meanness towards others that runs through it. I blame the video director/writer.

Yep. Class of 99. Man if only we knew
Same here. Going to my 25th reunion this weekend. I feel a sense of grief any time I see videos from that time.
The song, lyrics and the video really shows that coolness and sense of optimism we all had in the late 90s and early 2000s
September 11th, 2001 was the end of the 1990s.
Well said Martin. I have often comment to friends about that very thing. Little did we know that the craziness of the past few years was in our futures. It was a good time with a cool vibe. Cheers!
I Really Miss those days but as ti,rs goes on life just keeps getting Better ! BUT Indubitably a Fantastically GREAT Song ! Wow !
@@DomPeriod I remember sitting around a fire with my friends in late 2000 or early 2001, drinking and hanging out. We were all 17, 18, 19 years old. I looked around and said, "You know, we have all these problems with money and jobs and grades and relationship drama and the rest. But one day, we're going to look back on this as the good old days and wish we could go back."
They mostly just laughed, because our problems were oh so serious.
FACT!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Idk why but this song ALWAYS makes me cry. It never fails.
goldmineken other songs on the album used to do that to me
Why is that ?
_I feel the music in you_
It's encouraging, supportive.
It reaches out and puts a friendly
hand on your shoulder to comfort.
Have you ever been to a bus station,
park, coffee shop, where ever, and saw
someone whose shoulders are slightly
slumped and looking out a lonely window.
Then there's all the people who walk
right past that person. They might even
rudely bump into them.
Well this song is for those people.
It pushes back and protects.
It believes for you, when you can't
_Your in harms way_
_I'm right behind_

Chic’s ‘Good Times’ has that same melancholic quality you describe. It was also a song written just before the end of a decade with BIG changes just around the corner (Reagan/AIDS era and Bush/911/Iraq era respectively). Coincidence?

The track is an anthem encouraging resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics address the struggles of growing up in a world of opposition and how they can be overcome. It is a reminder that hard work and dedication pay off, and that you get out of life whatever you put into it. The theme of the song is that if you want to make it in life, you need to take chances, push through difficult times, and never let go of your beliefs.
wuaaaahhhh,que gran inspiracion y profundidad,me volaste la cabeza,graciad.
Spot on
you nailed it! It's a song for the ages for sure!
Agreed. I'm so disappointed the film clip doesn't reflect it.
“You got the music in you”
September 2024 here
This video is so 90's it hurts...
hurts soooooo gooooooooooood
+Turner Thompson so right
oh yeaaaaahhhh...
+Turner Thompson LOL......right on, brother!
+Turner Thompson Totally agree.
Don't give up
MAGA 2024!

This made me laugh and smile more than it should have, haha. I was a little kid during the 90’s, but these songs totally give out nostalgia vibes.
It's against the temporal prime directive! Lol. Star Trek reference.
I'm 70 and this song takes me back to my time for some reason. I hear all the great sounds from the 60's and 70's in it? Just makes me feel so good!!!
