I very much respect this perspective but would like to make the note that most people who are on carnivore aren’t doing it because they already feel good. Many of them first tried a plant based diet and that didn’t work or made things worse. They are suffering and desperate to try anything, even the likes of something as extreme as an all meat diet. A great majority of people aren’t thinking about how to make it to their 100th birthday, they’re thinking about how do I wake up tomorrow and feel good enough to work, good enough to take care of my family, good enough to want to keep living. As the diet wars continue may we all keep compassion for the great struggle we are all enduring everyday we wake up and realize most people are doing their best to figure this out.

@@TheProofWithSimonHill I appreciate you filling people in with the current scientific understandings knowing what the trade off might be. As someone who did Veganism for 3 years and actually stood upon your podcast with Rich Roll to back up my reasons, I can say that I was convinced that was the way, until I got injured and sick and started looking into what might be going on. I was shocked to find people thriving and healing on meat only. It kind of shook my entire foundation upon which I thought I understood dietary health. Out of desperation I’ve gone the carnivore route, being very mindful of sourcing (which is another important variable that I’m curious if the studies you quote account for). It’s too early to report on it but I will say I’m now convinced there’s a lot more to discover regarding our food. The plant world has changed so dramatically in recent decades with soil and water being compromised by chemicals and mono-cropping. I wonder if that’s partly why a lot of people aren’t doing well on plants. I guess what I’m getting at is that it seems like there are different variables in play now and perhaps future studies will unveil what’s going on here. Cause I feel like I know nothing again. I guess the last thing to do is try to listen to my body.

@@TheProofWithSimonHill Are you familiar with the work of Dr. Zsofia Clemmens? She has been treating a myriad of conditions with a meat/fat only diet, including cancer and autoimmune disease, and has remarkable results. She also did a study on intestinal permeability and the meat/fat diet actually lowered IP back into the normal range. In all my years working as a GI nurse with hundreds of Crohn’s and UC patients, I’ve never seen any of them heal completely and get off all medications like the patients treated by Dr. Clemmens, and all of my patients were omnivores with a heavy focus on eating fiber. Her work is very intriguing, and I’m hoping the medical community will start looking at it.

I've been on a 15 year journey to heal my IBS. I was raised organic vegetarian for the first 30 years of my life. I tried being vegan and gluten free for 2 years to heal my IBS, but the diarrhea never stopped. I was doing celery juice, fruit smoothies, large salads with no dressing, sweet potato, rice, about 20 supplements, etc. I finally tried carnivore 3 months ago. It's a miracle diet for me. My body is really loving it - I didn't realize how nutritionally deficient my body was. My teeth are no longer sensitive -they're actually getting whiter!! Energy is returning, I don't feel cold as often, I have 1-2 bowel movements a day instead of 4-5, lost all my excess weight, I don't wake up with a chronic sore throat anymore, etc.

I don't think any proof was provided for the assumption that a long term carnivore diet would result in negative outcomes with regard to dementia, cardio vascular disease, etc.
I tend to also like the hypothesis that a damaged or very limited, low diversity gut microbiome may be the reason people do so well on carnivore. However, it seems that some people are actually thriving on carnovire and have excellent markers of health in the areas you mentioned would suffer. If we could route just a small percentage of the trillions of dollars that flows into patent medicine research, and use it instead to study human nutrition, we would be far advanced in our understanding in as little as 10 years in my opinion.

I had similar issues (less extreme than her's) where in my late 20ies I started to experience joint inflammation in my knees and knuckles. It went to a point where I had to stop all physical activities and work only from home. Those were very miserable couple years. I saw 10+ doctors in 3 different countries and none of them had any idea what was causing it. MRI confirmed the inflammatory state in both knees, but there was no evidence of mechanical damage (e.g. meniscus tear) that could explain the inflammation. I had noticed some link between the intensity of symptoms and what I ate that day. As a last ditch effort I decided to give carnivore diet a try. I ended up working with Paleomedicina Clinic in Hungary, since I wanted to be properly monitored. My joint problems resolved within a month and I could start exercising, hiking and MTBing again. The joints felt great, but overall carnivore diet made me feel the worse I have ever felt. I lost around 10kg in muscle mass (looked like death), had a massive drop in libido, had mood swings, electrolyte issues (intense leg cramping every evening), elevated cholesterol, worrying kidney test results, etc. Those carnivore/keto doctors couldn't find a solution for the negative symptoms I experienced. After around 4 months I had enough and started introducing carbs again. It has been 3 years since my carnivore experience. I still eat meat, but I also eat lots of vegetables, fruit, wild rice and oats. My joints feel great and I don't have any of the issues that I experienced on carnivore. It turned out that the cause behind my joint issues was histamine intolerance, which was probably caused by gut dysbiosis and that's something I'm still working on now. It wasn't that plants were bad for me or that meat was healing for, I just simply couldn't tolerate high histamine foods like fermented dairy, dark chocolate, sauerkraut, etc. My joints improved because carnivore diet forced me to eliminate those foods from my diet. Mikhaila has been very public about having a damaged gut. I believe she has even tried fecal transplants. Meat-only diet helps to manage her symptoms, but it doesn't fix the underlying issues. Hopefully over time she can find a better solution for healing her gut, or at least we can hope that the carnivore diet continues to work for her long-term. From my personal experience and from what I have heard from other former carnivores, this type of extremely restrictive diet can be very dangerous.

I agree on most of your points except for the importance of fiber. Fiber has no impact on cancer of any kind. Fiber isn't necessary for proper bowel movements. Cancer of the colon is due to the cancer virus infecting damaged colon cells. Oxidative damage from processed foods, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, anything that's not bioavailable will damage cells. Fiber can actually cause constipation instead of what conventional Medicine claims. Whereas consuming adequate amounts of animal fat will keep the colon/intestines healthy and "lubed up". Too much fat will cause diarrhea. Insufficient fat can lead to constipation. Fiber is supposed to be digested in the appendix but, the appendix is a vestigial organ.

The lack of nutrition may be a driver for craving the unhealthy high caloric and addictive options, so it is a complicated issue for sure.

Not always true. A lot of long term Carnivores develop severe electrolyte imbalances and other problems, like Dr. Saladino and Frank Tufano. One of the most profound comments I read was on one of Dr. Chaffee's videos where the guy said he was a strict orthorexic Carnivore for 15 years and then he became extremely ill with electrolytes imbalances. He said it took him several years to get better. He also mentioned when he was sick he had the dark sunken Carnivore eyes. I immediately thought of Rick Rodriguez, the "supposed" 40 year Carnivore who looks very unwell, especially around his eyes. Dr. Chaffee's also starting to get that and Kelly Hogan definitely is starting to get it too and she looks anorexic she's so thin now. Compare her videos now to a year ago.

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP Місяць тому +3

Both Saladino and Tufano were eating massive loads of organ meats. That might've given them toxicity of vitamin A, copper, etc. Or in the case of Saladino, he seems to have been eating far too little protein for how many hours he was intensively active everyday.
There are plenty of electrolyes and other minerals in animal foods. The only reason they might get out of balance is if one isn't gettting enough taurine from fresh meat. That might a problem in the modern diet since few of us get fresh meat any more. But if so, that is easily resolved by supplementing taurine.
As for dark eyes, I haven't noticed any of the long-term carnivore advocates with that problem. Honestly, compare long-term carnivorres with long-term vegans and tell me with a straight face that carnivores don't look healthy.

Part of our problem is Westerners are largely ignorant of the larger field of nutrition studies and other evidence. It's not only that some tribes do fine on a diet heavy on animal foods. More importantly, research in Asia shows that high meat intake is strongly correlated to better health outcomes and longer lifespan. In fact, the longest lived national populations (e.g., Hong Kong) are those that eat the most meat.
Why Westerners tend to be so ignorant is likely because of the healthy user bias. In places like the US, particularly in the past, people who ate the most meat were also eating lots of starchy carbs, sugar, seed oils, etc, in which case most of their diet was likely plant foods. On top of that, those who follow such a diet were also more likely to be of low socioeconomic status, exercise little, not take supplements, smoke and drink more, not see doctors regularly, etc.
Yet in ignorance, it was the meat getting blamed. Until we have long-term research on the carnivore diet, we should remain intellectually humble or else ignorance will continue to rule public debate. It's unlikely that continued ignorance is going to improve health.

I never said plants are enemies. But neither are they our friends. They are simply biological chemical factories. They contain toxins, antinutrients, etc that are problematic; particularly if not prepared properly and if not eaten seasonally. But they also contain beneficial molecules. Like many others on animal-based diets, I see plants mainly as medicines, flavorings, and sometimes used for processing animal foods. Still, the fact remains that all essential nutrients can be found in animal foods. That is not true of plant foods.
Even the phytonutrients in plant foods will also be found in animal foods, if the animal ate those plants. For example, pasture-raised meat not only has high levels of vitamin A but also high levels of beta-carotene, the vitamin A precursor, along with other carotenoids. This means by eating the animal foods one gets all the nutrition from plants and in its most concentrated form but without all the problematic other stuff. The animals will filter out the antinutrients and such. Cows will even break down the glyphosate.
So, tell me again why plants are supposedly essential to the human diet? Sure, if there are many pathogens in your environment, use herbs and spices that kill them. And if you're sick, then use herbal medicines when helpful. Or if you just like variety, eat plant foods in small amounts for flavor, just as long as they are picked locally and seasonally. The point is to do what humans evolved to do over millions of years. I don't need to fear plants. They are simply irrelevant, other than as feed for the animals I eat or procure food from.

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP Місяць тому +1

By the way, 15% of the diet as plant foods is not a lot. Sure, they went to great lengths to get plant foods when animal foods, particularly the favored fatty animal foods, weren't as available. They need nutrition from somewhere.
But keep in mind that almost all hunter-gatherers today have been forced onto sub-optimal land. They've lost their prime hunting grounds and much of their best game as been driven off by encroachment, poachers, and herders.
So, with so much less high quality animal foods, it is extremelhy telling that they still manage to get 85% of their diet from animal foods. Imagine if like in the past they could obtain all the fatty meat and fish they wanted.

It's surprising to me that in 2022, we still are debating healthy diets. It just seems like something was lost in our history, or some information has been deliberately withheld from us to become this ignorant of how to feed ourselves properly. Diet seems so obvious, anyone with any attunement to their bodies knows what is healthy and what is not. Perhaps the lack of grounded, attuned, body-aware people is why we are here. It's so much more complicated than it needs to be.
Our modern lifestyles are clearly not compatible to our biology, or we'd not be seeing so many preventable, avoidable health issues, early aging, males balding at 23, women infertile at 28, flabby people the vast majority in the west, dysfunction, disease.

I believe more people need to go study the lives of the thousands of centenarians around the world, the ones who are still thriving in their nineties and beyond. What I’ve found is that they all have the exact same commonalities, no matter where in the world they are. From my research I have found that the longest living people eat little to no meat at all. We know in Asia that soy is the protein of choice, and that it is very healthy. They grow gardens, and eat a plant-rich diet. Keep their bodies moving, and have a positive outlook on life. Science literally shows that high protein diets lead to a shorter life/health span. There are actually a few groups in the world where meat is predominant in their diet, and they don’t live very long. I encourage anyone to research the lives of centenarians and see what they eat. It’s not a ribeye steak. I particularly found the Korean centenarian study quite fascinating as they expected to find low b12 levels because of their plant rich diets, but they did not. They found that they were getting b12 from a fermented soy food that they make and from seaweed. So, little to no meat and yet these people are still living alone and working their gardens at 100…
It’s sad that the meat and dairy industry has blinded people so badly to believe they need their products to be healthy when the opposite is happening. America is the biggest meat consumer and also the most unhealthy. Heart disease is the number 1 killer and yet it’s completely avoidable. I believe the powers that be, big pharma, want people sick. The amount of money made from drugs is astounding. They don’t care about peoples health. But anyone can research this for themselves. I was once duped into believing that raw milk was a superfood, and grass fed meat was the food of the gods. Until I had blood work done, and then my eyes started to open. I’m now plant-based and couldn’t be happier AND healthier 🌱😊

I have Ulcerative Colitis, Carnivore long term isn't applicable, Short term there have been benefits, like reduction of frequency. Full blown whole food vegan diets are opposite, and makes you go a lot more often, and relieve constipation, but don't allow ulcers to heal, and even though you may have fully formed Bowel Movements, it can be accompanied with blood and mucus, I've been incorporating Sauerkraut & kimchi into my diet (Recently removed kimchi due to the Korean peppers involved and not being tolerant to spicy foods), Now I'm having Blueberry, Avocado & un-homogenized Milk Kefir Organic, with blueberries and supplements, as well as cocoa powder, glutamine and mastic gum, I started Cabbage juice today, consuming twice daily (Breakfast + Dinner) as well as once a day, some Celery Juice which is amazing stuff.
I just wish the medical industry was more on top of things, and studied what can help people with Gut dysbiosis and IBD/IBS, because they tell you it has nothing to do with diet, when I know for a fact it has an effect whether it's just an exacerbation of symptoms or if it has a bigger impact, such as the absence of certain beneficial gut bacteria that have been extinguished from Anti-biotics and other problematic environmental factors.
Life is hard, I just want to be better, and I'm trying my best, but even when you think you're doing everything you can, you're still dissuaded by what you see in the toilet. If anyone has some insight or knowledge they can offer, I'd be happy to listen.

I wanted to follow-up on this comment I made a year or so ago.
In a flare up of Ulcerative Colitis, I use Carnivore as a temporary healing diet that allows for the ulcers in my colon to heal. After 2 weeks past symptoms have dissolved, I will then slowly introduce Blueberries, and progressively increase over time (up to 150g per day). After which, I'll add Dark Chocolate (70% cocoa), again, small amounts, then increase a while, roughly 50g a day. Meat will be be a large staple while increasing fiber intake.
After Blueberries, and Dark Chocolate are tolerated, I will cook Carrots (Small and work my way up again), I now have roughly 500-600g of Carrots / Sweet potatoes, each day, removing the sweet potato skin.
I've been in remission for a while now, so, I've been able to get away with a lot more than I could during a flare. I'm able to have candy, steamed Dim Sims, and other somewhat troubled foods.
I do note that Carnivore itself has it's place, but in no way can I foresee it being a long term diet. Ketosis, and Carnivore should be used as a gateway to better health, and eventually, a diet where you're getting enough fiber and healthy foods that allow for your body to function properly.
This has taken me such a long time to fine tune, and medication has been a part of that process. (Mesalamine)
After I was without symptoms, for a while, and able to eat more freely, I was scheduled for a Colonoscopy. I did not enjoy the prep work, nor did I enjoy the procedure itself. My results were Proctitis, inflammation of the rectal area only. Which is leaps and bounds difference compared to an entire colon full of inflammation. Please note that this was only with roughly 1-2 months of healing (No symptoms), and at the moment I believe I'm quite well off in terms of my health goals.
If anyone has questions, I'll be happy to answer.

People will be sensitive at first, fermented foods are easy to utilise and assimilate without too much side effects. Although I would be inclined to suspect whole grains, cruciferous vegetables and beans tp be eliminated for as long as needed as they can be hard on the gut especially to those with impaired microbiome.
Maybe more research into enzyme nutrition would help, those lacking the enzymes to digest certain sugars and starches may benefit from enzymes initially to help offset any digestive distress. That being said, slow and steady is best strategy as Dr B says and restoring the gut takes time. Animal foods don't destroy your microbiome. It simply changes it. On an animal-based diet, you'll have more microbes that eat animal foods and less that eat plant foods. The opposite happens with the vegan diet, which is why it sometimes takes them a while to adapt back to eating meat. No permanent damage is caused and the microbiome tends to shift easily.

This is really sad seems like we no longer know what to eat.. everything is so extreme.. not surprised with so much sugar processed foods chemicals heavy carbs gmos vegetable oils vegetables from depleted soils meat fed gmos pumped with hormones antibiotics now mRNA and chemicals to color meat to make it visually pleasing drinking and bathing in contaminated water.. then trying to cure symptoms with antibiotics steroids and meds that cause even more issues.. we need to look at other countries with a long history to see what they eat. Foods loaded with colorful seasonal vegetables and fruits, tons of herbs and spices chili probiotics (not yogurt) lots of lemon vinegar wild seafood etc Corporations and governments have too much control over our food and water. Money has become main player in every field and greed has taken over and causing confusion and chaos. Time for us all to fix the root issue. Bring back proper farming restore soil health ban chemicals organic farmers need the support more than ever. Stop buying foods from the supermarket stop buying gmos. another anecdote here. carnivore was no solution for me. (sibo, dysbiosis) I would gave it more time than 4 weeks but terrible hydration/electrolyte issues no matter how much salt or water I took in had me to push the brakes. no improvement in bathroom visits also. actually made everything worse at the end of the day. in retrospect it sounds kinda silly to jump on a diet that requires a healthy and robust digestion when you lack these things in the first place. despite what carnivores tell you that meat is easy to digest it really is not. especially breaking down these long chain fatty acids like stearic acids from beef literally asks for a furnace inside your stomach.

I have become well into this topic. I almost fear extinctions of ancient micro biome strains.
I am plant based and feel like I am traveling even further down that rabbit hole.
I want to 'feed the soil, not the plant' when it comes to my own nutrition.
I really hope one day we can hand pick the team we want inside us simply by choosing our foods wisely.
I can safely say my biome is mashed. it has faced everything wrong you could get, from poverty starvation to wheat and meat dominant, to food poison in foerign lands and IBS.
I am only just coming to embrace my biome and strangely, it is notions in quantum science of a conscious universe compelling me a certain way. I used to call myself vegan, now I feel simply saying it is a vow to not hurt sentience unless no choice is more accurate. we literally do not know the connections and realities we find ourselves existing in.
Even reality isnt real. the ball of fire at the center of the earth is probably, currently not even there, but a ball of quantum potential is there instead until we observe...
and consciousness in the human brain also appears to stem from the quantum.
We have also figured out at the end of entropy, this existence simply fades back into the quantum field.
It is all connected somehow. as nuts as it sounds, we must find symbiosis with the world of bacteria and virus.
hell even the fact that the sac our babies grow in... could not have existed if we did not at some point in our pre history before we became humans, a massive global pandemic of a HIV like virus, one we actually absorbed entirely (it is part of what we used to call junk DNA but cracked it. this virus gave us a main ability to procreate...
The universe is one, and we have not truly attained real intelligence till we hit the sentience singularity...

As a result, most of the Maasai people have a dangerously low life expectancy. Evidently, this causes them to be the People with the lowest life expectancy in the whole world. The average male lives to the age of 42, whilst the women live until the age of just 44. #ThePeopleWithTheLowestLifeExpectancyInTheWorld.” No thank you. Meanwhile, we see the thousands of centenarians around the world and what do they all have in common? Plant rich diets. And movement. And positive outlooks on life. Do some research on Korean centenarians. I found that one particularly very interesting. They expected to find low b12 levels because of their plant dominant diet, but they didn’t. So, they wanted to find out why/how and come to find out they were getting b12 from a fermented soy product that they make and from seaweed that they were eating. From all of my research, and I’ve been obsessively researching diet for the past ten years, I have no question that the plant based diet is the healthiest diet for mankind.

@@plants_and_wellness1574 I firmly believe that fermented food is great for just about everyone - vegetarian, carnivores and everyone in between. Besides vitamin B12, there are quite a few other known (and likely many more unknown) postbiotics including vitamin K and short chain fatty acids, as well as metabolites of all the phytonutrients (e.g. polyphenols) that are beneficial to human health. Consuming fermented food not only reinforce/improve our existing microbiome, it also gives us an opportunity to absorb those postbiotics along our digestive tracks other than the large intestine where the bulk of the microbiome resides.

The misconception about Cardiovascular disease and the carnivore diet stems from the misunderstanding of different types of cholesterol and how specifically LDL cholesterol should be interpreted through the context of your overall metabolic health. Most of the belief that "high cholesterol is bad" is because high LDL is *correlated* with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, when you observe people who are metabolically healthy with high LDL, you find no such correlation.

Pls send a paper that supports your last statement about not finding increased risk of cvd with high LdL as long as you’re ’metabolically healthy’. Pls also define ‘metabolically healthy’.

    • @zan6585
      @zan6585 10 місяців тому +1

I misspoke slightly, it's not that it doesn't increase your risk but that your risk is minimized based upon factors like your HDL. For instance, in the Framingham study they found that the difference between risk was 10x greater for participants who had HDL=25 vs participants who had HDL=85 despite sharing the same number of LDL cholesterol.
The problem arises from viewing LDL in a vacuum and not observing the other factors at play.
People who are metabolically healthy have high levels of HDL, Low triglycerides, healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and finally an ideal waist circumference (more or less not obese or underweight). Around 88% of people in America are metabolically "unfit." So it would make sense that in *most* people, having high LDL is bad; However, it's important to note that LDL is highly contextual to your metabolic health as a whole and to not view it within a vacuum.
Specifically with regards to the carnivore diet:
People on carnivore diets frequently show markers suggesting great metabolic health.
Dietary cholesterol does not directly equate to blood cholesterol levels. It isn't a vacuum and is to be viewed in the context of overall diet, lifestyle, the different types of cholesterol, and the overall health of your body and organs.
The diet promotes weight loss through ketosis and the consumption of satiating foods. This has been shown to lower your LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and improve your blood fasting glucose.
The diet eliminates foods and drinks other than water and home-made bone broth, this includes the elimination of alcohol which negatively impacts the liver, the organ responsible for regulating your cholesterol levels.
Diets low in carbohydrates can improve insulin sensitivity, which can, in turn, have favorable effects on lipid metabolism.
Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and heart disease. Metabolic health is closely tied to inflammatory status, so improved metabolic health can potentially reduce cardiovascular risk.
Also one more thing is that people on carnivore diets usually say they experienced few adverse effects and instead report health benefits and high satisfaction. The consistency of energy, improvement in mood, and particularly the reduction of inflammation all promote exercise (and optimization of health) which has a domino effect on health benefits.

Dude Simon give it a rest with this meat based vs vegan crap. The microbiota can adapt to many diets. Vegan diet is not the only superior diet out there. Its really the composition of the diet and the macro ratios and micronutrients you bring in. There are only subgroups of individuals that need to be on either extreme side. Dont be dogmatic, I know it gets clicks and views but its misleading. I would encourage you too listen to Tommy Woods view on the microbiota, get a different perspective.

It quite sure what is violent? Far more animals killed, habitats destroyed and destruction of insect and bird life growing beans and grains. Just finished a trip out west here in Australia and cattle are coexisting with so much wildlife, their life is happy and peaceful and they have one bad moment. That’s when they are killed at the abattoir, which is monitored closely. One cow can feed a human for a year. If I was a cow, I think I would rather have a life, and that one moment at death than have no life at all.. can’t bear to think of all the native animals killed for massive fields of canola, wheat rice, and grains. Yours is not a bloodless non violent diet, stop kidding yourself.

To many miss the boat on natures cycles. No grocery. No refrigerators. It only makes sense that our biome will cycle.
The problem with studies is the need to find single point results. Failing to take into account seasonal effects and the flushing of things like oxalate or going thru lean meat season.
