In my area JCM 2000 DSL are going for about $400 on OfferUp or Craig’s list. Doesn’t seem to matter if they’re made in England or Vietnam.

These settings that you demonstrate work beautifully with my amp. Other vids relating to the DSL40CR have not produced the superior tone I'm now hearing. I agree. For people saying you cant get plexi tones....you are full of it. It gets close enough....very close. Krank the master on crunch channel...back gain to around 3. Dime out mids and presence....adjust treble and bass to your taste. It's very close. I have done a side by side. So critics need hush. I'm 57 and have played since I was 12. Owned and played through many great amps. DSL is a fine Marshall....UK or Asian made it's still the best bang for your $$$$. I wont pay what Boogie..Freidmam or Hughes&Kettner wants. EVH lineup I have yet to own. My son has the EVH 6550+. Fine amp but I like my DSL better

Great video man thanks for giving the good ol 2000 dsl 100 the love and respect it truly deserves.

Consistently puts a smile on my dial whether jamming with mates or noodling in le palais de garage.
    Just does so many tones.

Wow what a diverse amp! I've never dug too deep into the Marshall stuff because what I did have was always breaking down. That seriously sounds killer! The sound I personally go for is the Eddie Van Halen sound off of Balance..."Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do." Yeah it's NOT his typical "brown sound." It's more of a hot sound but with clarity. You were almost there at the end of the video! I'm sure that a turn and tweak of the tone controls would have it there easily. I seriously may have to grab one of these in the near future!

When i had my DSL, i always stuck on red lead 1,with a bb preamp in front. I was never a big fan of the other channels, except maybe crunch. On lead 2 I could never get along with that channel because of the compression and FIZZ. But lead 1 was the main event for sure. Always great to see how other players dial in a DSL,they’re amazing amps!

Killer tones! I’ve been wanting to get a JCM2000 for a while now. I hear so many die hard, older Marshall people say to stay away from a JCM2000 because they don’t sound anything like a “real” Marshall. Whatever that means. But practically every decent demo I’ve seen of them, they sound fantastic! This demo just put the icing on the cake for me. Cool vid!

Great demo, and I'm a long time DSL owner and user. Nice, well put together video. I have watched three of your videos now detailing the DSL 50. Nice job dude... I have been gigging with two 2000 DSL 100s for over 10 years now. I purchased two to have a main and a back up amp. I have also replaced the transformers with Plexi era speced Heyboer OTs and Classictone PTs, removed the stock r46 plastic filtering resistor, and added a real 3H 25mA choke. These three upgrades created a significant improvement in clarity, warmth and punch. I can totally emulated a JCM 800 amp with these changes...but of course in a FAR more versatile DSL format.
I really need to say this: These amps sound quite different by using different power and preamp tubes...AND by biasing properly! I CANNOT overstate this. Many of the JCM 2000s are out there underbiased, running too hot resulting in a more smeared, less defined tone, and eating power tubes. You should absolutely NOT exceed 37mV/A per tube! Sweet spot right around 34mV/A per tube. I just picked up a 2005 DSL 50 and I love it... Try some Winged Cs, EH 34s, or Genelex KT-77s..huge tone...very vintage Marshall sounding. I absolutely LOVE these amps for gigging. I boost the green crunch channel with a FulltoneFD2, and use the red OD 1 channel only for soloing... OUTSTANDING lead boost..I have owned just about every Marshall ever made, new and old over the past 3 decades, and the DSL for gigging is hands down my favorite.

Just subscribed Leon. Been watching many of your Marshall amp vids over the past few months. Did my homework and have a JCM2000 DSL 50 shipping up hear to New England from a seller in Georgia. Been using a TSL60 head for years primarily using a Suhr Eclipse drive pedal and other overdrives thru the clean channel of the amp. But as you said, it’s kind of missing the point to use the clean channel of a 3 channel amp! Lol. Can’t wait to gig out the DSL this summer! Thank you for all the fantastic amp demos. Big fan!

    • @stratodan27
      @stratodan27 2 роки тому

@@LeonTodd Hey Leon. So I've got an A/B box hooked up to my DSL50 and my TSL60 to a 2x12 closed back cab with Celestion V30's in it (set to stereo mode so 1 amp goes to 1 spkr, the other amp hits the other speaker). In a nutshell, the JCML2000 DSL50 smokes the TSL60 in every way. That's an honest (not wishful thinking) assessment. The DSL's ultra gain channel is tighter, less buzzy, less fizzy, a little sweeter on the top end and just...more Marshally. But what really blows my mind...is that the clean channel on the DSL50 is amazing like you've said. I own 7 or 8 Fender tube amps and man does the DSL50's clean get fairly close. Holy cow. It's much more open and alive compared to the dull sounding and closed TSL60's clean. And all these years I thought the TSL60's clean sounded good for a Marshall amp! I'd also note the reverb in the DSL50 sounds better (not even close), and I HATE parallel FX loops which the TSL60 has...but the DSL50 has a beloved series FX loop so I can put things like a noise gate or a volume pedal in the FX loop. The FX loop also sounds great in the DSL50. I notice zero difference in tone when using the loop vs. not using the loop. The DSL50 also seems to be louder than the TSL60...which is odd. But it is. Overall I could not be happier! My hunch to try out the DSL50 and go with the old JCM2000 version rather than the newer DSL100HR version, has really paid off. BTW - after doing some research online, I rebiased the 2 power tubes in the DSL50 to 38mv and it sounds quite good to me. So there you go mate, there's my happy review of the JCM2000 DSL50 head! I might even make a video comparing both amps. Might be helpful to someone. Thanks again. Dan

I have the DSL100H (MIV), with a 12AT7 in V2. This calms it down a bit makes the red-channel PERFECT for a strat. Great thing about the MIV versions is that they are the 50W and 100 W versions in 1 unit... and all the bias-shift and overheating problems the UK version was notorious for, have been fixed. Love mine to pieces. Add distortion pedal/boost in front with a 10 band EQ in loop and you have an absolute tone weapon!

Ive used one for 20 years for live gigs, I use it the way that i think Marshall intended its design to be used.
    - Plugged straight in without effects.
    - Rhythm tone - set on channel one (button in), like an ACDC crunch that can clean up with guitar volume.
    - Lead tone - set on channel two (button out), a bit more gain but a lot louder.
I just use a foot-switch to switch between channels for solos or rhythm.
I have heard that some people complain that channel two on these amps loses bottom end, (like a TS-9 or SD-1) but that allows it to cut through the band better in the mix for soloing.

Excellent video! Cheers from Spokane Washington! I've had my jcm 2000 dsl 50 watt model for about 3 years. You really know how to use the amps eq very well. The only gripe I have about the amp is the clean channel, specifically the button out setting, sounds very thin to me. Could you recommend a good eq setting for the amp to beef up the tones to get more of srv/hendrix clean?

I play a dsl 40 for a country/rock band. It dose the trick. I put a delay and boost pedal in the effects loop for solos. I used to have a jcm 2000 head when I was in a heavy rock band. It sounded great, then it got dropped by someone loading the van and never sounded the same with new tubes. I sold that and played a jvm 410. Great amp but Id rather use combo amps now. Just started useing a fender hot rod deluxe IV. It is very warm sounding. Still getting used to it. Your amp sounded very good.

For anyone like me who was interested in gigging out with this amp (classic rock, alt rock, hard rock, metal...). It took me a few days and many hours (somewhat frustrating days) to finally figure out how I can make this amp work for me when playing live gigs where I need to get a few different drive tones plus a clean tone. Because of the HUGE difference in the EQ curve between the Classic Gain channel's clean mode vs. the Ultra Gain channel, I found it impossible to switch channels on the amp (clean mode to Lead1) without my sound completely changing and having to run back to the amp and alter the EQ. I like to set it and forget it at gigs. But what I found was that if I set the EQ to my taste for the Ultra Gain Lead 1 mode (Deep ON, presence and treble no more than 3 cuz that channel is REALLY BRIGHT, Mids about 3-4, bass 4-5) then I can use those same EQ settings including the Deep ON in the Classic Gain channel if I choose the Crunch mode and set the gain half way at 5....this gives me a "cleanish" tone in the Classic Gain channel that makes a great pedal platform. So for my in-betweeen clean(Crunch mode) and high gain (Lead 1 mode), I can add a low gain pedal like the Timmy to the Crunch channel, or add a mid gain pedal like the Barber Gain Changer to the Crunch channel. This works perfectly for me! Now I can get clean, crunch, and high gain tones quite easily and I can now envision gigging with this amp. The amp did not come with a footswitch so I bought a Boss FS-5L foot switch to plug into the Channel 1/4" jack on the back of the amp. FS-FL works with a regular TRS instrument cable so you can decide on the length of cable you want. So psyched I put in the time to figure this out. Great amp!

Hey I have a JCM 2000 401, the combo made in England. What is the best setting to make it sound as much like a plexi as possible, to get that super great 1969-1972 sort of Hendrix type tone? Or do I need to change out the stock speaker to something better or what? I think this amp has more potential, I just am not quite sure how to make it sound like a plexi.

I finally got a DSL 50 today. Have to say it is the best amp I have ever played (and its not just the feel good moment of a new toy). The clean channel is absolutely superb. It is like a deluxe reverb but a lot crispier. it takes pedals so well. The Les Paul sounds super amazing on it as does my modded Variax with hi gain pickups. I have not heard my guitars sound so nice before and I have some pretty nice amps (JTM 45, Rockerverb, Divided by 13 and Archilles Deluxe Reverb). The lead channel is fine too. I actually really like the reverb on it, which I think is a spring verb. You can crank the reverb up and it does not become un-useable unlike the reverb on my Archilles which becomes un-useable past 3. The amp seems to have a tonne of headroom. I can see why Leon loves the JCM2000 DSL range so much. Thanks Leon for all your videos on this amp. Your videos influenced my decision to get this amp.

This video directly answers a bunch of questions I have had for some time. Among them is the difference between Greenbacks and V30's, and while I know this is just one video and not definitive, I was surprised at how clear the difference was -- and how much I like the Greenbacks! Love the clarity and bite.
Have you ever tried this amp through an attenuator? I am strictly a home player and would not be able to play at anything like the volume this thing needs to sizzle, but would jump on one if it could be brought down to a family-friendly db level.

I love the tones you were getting here, especially with the boost pedal engaged.
My question to you is, how loud is the hiss noise, when you’re turned up real loud ? I also hate noise gates, because they’ll cut off your sustain, if you’re playing really loud, and that’s the problem I’m having right now. I play in verity bands from shit Kickin’ Country to Ozzy. I have two Fender Tone Master Twins for the ultimate clean sound, and I just recently bought a Marshall 1960 Lead 4X12 with 30watt green backs, and was in the market for a vintage JCM 800, but have had no luck finding one, well that’s reasonably priced. So, I saw the band Devoe on Facebook (spelling wrong I know) and I love that guitar players sound. I know he’s using a Wet/Dry set up with his primary amp being the JCM 2000 and his probably effect send and return to his JCM 800. I don’t need that big of a set up, but was curious about the JCM 2000. Also, the anarchy, audio clone.you were speaking of. How much do they go for?
Love your posts and your playing and your sound.
    Holla Back.

I just noticed that King Crimson album cover. Hey - great video - I need to explore the 2000 more. I tend to be lazy and just stay in JCM 800 land (I use Plexi's and AFD's from time to time, although an AFD is basically a JCM 800 anyway) I use Vox amps usually somewhere on an album too, and Matchless Chieftains are great for varied tone and/or lower gain rhythm tracks) - But this is a great tour of the 2000.

2 years ago I got a deal on a JCM 2000 DSL 50, with a 1960A cab with green backs. I’m hoping the guy sold it due to a divorce and not that he just took the loss, I got them both for $380! The reverb circuit had a blown chip and that cost me $120 to have fixed. This amp is insane for what it is. But, it’s developing a volume drop while playing and now I’m getting what sounds like a ground “popping” sound. I’ll definitely get this fixed soon for two reasons...1, I’ve got very little in it and 2, this amp is versatile as hell!!! Thanks for the video.
