The whole Sansa and Arya set up Littlefinger subplot is so good on paper, but it really didn't land in execution. Like yes, season 6 ends with Sansa knowing she has to get rid of Littlefinger, and I don't think she could have done so by just snitching on him, so the idea of her laying out a trap, letting him think he was the one manipulating them was such a cool idea that wasn't given its due.
Cause basically it all boils down to Bran just saying "yah it's all true" when Petyr is accused. The whole plot would have been so much more satisfactory if we had been misdirected as an audience, but with the last reveal showing us how in retrospective she was collecting the evidence and laying out the trap.
This was the plot that could have so fully made use of Sansa and Arya's skills. Like imagine if Littlefinger had been all season believing he was talking with his agents keeping an eye on the sisters, to be revealed that Arya had been impersonating them for most of the time.

    • @stackspace
      @stackspace Рік тому +20

I like the idea of Arya impersonating Petyr's agents, but I always thought this plot should've been a call back to what Sansa learned from Tyrion, which is that you can be dishonorable to achieve honorable ends.
It wouldve been so sick if Sansa had played Petyr and Aria. Because of Brans's logic-breaking power of knowing everything everywhere all the time, the plot wouldve had to have been that Sansa "kidnaps" Bran and tells Petyr it was Aria explaining she had spent so much time with the faceless men and the Hound and she wanted his power for herself. Alternatively, she tells Aria it was Petyr. She lays all of the evidence herself until Aria kills Petyr and then Sansa reveals she took Bran and needed Aria to kill Baelish. This would obviously hurt their relationship but Bran would explain that Petyr was too clever and there was no other way.
I have written this over and over again in my head due to sheer frustration with how this plot played out.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, though. A coupla jabronies in UA-cam comments coulda made this series actually worthwhile.

    • @alonsogonzalez7539
      @alonsogonzalez7539 Рік тому +27

@@stackspace Mmm, I do think that thematically is just stronger if the sisters are working together, you know? To show that Petyr couldn't destroy the Starks. So while he spends the whole season believing he's finally succeeding in isolating Sansa from her sister, it truly is that both of them have been playing him.
I just really like the idea of Sansa coming up with the plan and Aria lending her skills. So all they both learn in their journeys comes together, to avenge their family and make Petyr pay.

    • @american1207

Meh, I think any plot Arya is in is almost entirely ruined. Like Bran she's too much of an xmen character for the plot to really have any suspense. Also Petyr after season 4 is just too much of a mustache twilry villian, he's like the obvious bad guy we used to see in those cartoons when we were 10, he's just too corny. And his plans are idiotic after a certain point they don't make any sense. Honestly this plot point was a waste of space, they were trying so hard to give Arya and Sansa something to do it felt way too forced and convoluted.

This whole region was really Catelyn's story, as she was the POV character in the book and present for most of the intrigue in Robb's camp and the West. There's a theory that was the original plot. You can SEE where they CG'd in green fire (aka wildfire), which feels so out of place in the version we got - not to mention, that is literally what Emilia was told they were filming. She believed that was the plot up until she saw the premiere. So the theory goes that the plot was changed at the last minute, for some reason.

@@LordofFullmetal Also in the scene where Drogon is specifically burning kids in the streets you can see Dany isn't riding him so Emilia didn't film that scene and they just added it with CGI later. And they lied to Kit Harington too, they told him back in season 3 that Jon would be the one who kills the Night King, sometime in season 6 they changed their mind and told Maisie Williams it would be Arya but never told Kit anything. He didn't find out until the table read of 8x03! Remember just 4 episode earlier he was having another stare down with the NK after Dany saved him...All for nothing! And D&D knew it would be Arya but still wrote that scene in 7x06, I'd be pissed if I was Kit tbh. Jon really just became a plot device for them which became way more obvious in season 8.
What I realised is those writers just didn't care. Didn't care about lying to the actors, didn't care about the story, the show, the viewers, the actors, everyone involved in making it etc to spend more time on it which HBO was handing out like free Candy plus free money! They didn't care about putting in enough effort to give the biggest show on TV the ending it deserved and I think they knew season 8 was an inconsistent, nonsensical, illogical mess before they put it out. But they just didn't care. That's what makes it still sad until this day, this thing we all loved so much was being handled by people who just didn't care about it.

Ned is supposed to portray the classic hero archetype. Honorable to a fault, and his character is meant to show what happens to a character like that in A song of ice and fire. Noble as he is, he refuses to play the "game of thrones" and is therefore killed in disgrace, leading to an all out war. It's meant to describe what type of world Westeros is and I think it does a damn good job at it.

One note - Dany doesn't have a reaction of disgust to sleeping with her nephew because that's sort of what Targs did. A LARGE number of them married their direct sibling. Plus uncle/aunt married to niece/nephew is already established elsewhere in the cannon for her family so she likely grew up just thinking of it as normal. Her brother HAD to have spent the first 14 years of her life doing nothing but telling her stories of their history as she seemed to know a hell of a lot about it for someone who hasn't seen a member of her family outside her brother or ANYONE really who knew them since she was a literal infant so no doubt he included this part as well. I guess they were so nervous and afraid at the beginning, because they were beginner film makers, so they leaned heavily in Martin's work and really took care of the world building.
I don't know what happened during season 4-5. Maybe their egos just got a huge boost and they thought they could do no wrong, maybe Dunning-Krueger effect kicked in full force, maybe they just stopped caring, I don't know... But never have I ever seen such drop in quality in any other tv-show.

Can I just say I absolutely LOVE how the murder of Jeoffrey is shot as a murder mystery, with a smorgasbord of suspects with tons of motive appearing to establish alibis and presences, the murder weapon of the chalice getting drank from and poured out numerous times and left unattended multiple times to clearly establish when the cup was poisoned, a great big distraction for not only the victim and witnesses but *the audience themselves* to give the murderer their opportunity, and of course the subtle detail about Sansa's necklace vanishing which could easily be overlooked as continuity error, but is in fact the solution to the murder and the definitive evidence.
Even though the murder is never properly investigated and ultimately the killer just has to confess to the audience, it is entirely possible to solve it with nothing but the footage from the episode.

So in the scripts for the massacre at kings landing, Dany was supposed to do exactly what Slip Maker suggested he thought she'd do in the video - start massacring lannister soldiers while making her way towards Cersei.
Certainly not exactly moral, but not stone cold evil either. However, the dragonfire set off the wildfire that the mad king had placed around the city, and that is what causes the thousands of deaths.
Not only is this more in line with what we already know about Dany as a character, but it makes her death that much more tragic when you consider that Jon may have killed her when it became apparent to him she felt no remorse despite the deaths that she caused - accidentally, but still. It adds some moral greyness that was absolutely needed.
The worst thing though? I read somewhere that David and Dan changed the massacre in post production. Emilia Clarke believed that up until the premiere screening of the episode, what was in the script was what was going to happen on screen. That's why we don't see Emilia Clarke herself after the massacre begins - because it was an edited CGI fest that wasn't in line with what Dany was supposed to be actually doing. It would have been interesting to see her reaction to the wildfire blowing up the city, and I reckon that's what they filmed, and it'll be on the cutting room floor somewhere. Honestly, the embarrassment and disappointment she must have felt when she saw it for the first time must have been overwhelming. Poor Emilia. Deserved so much better.

Had the Wall, Iron Born, and Dorne storylines not been gutted of supporting characters and attendant subplots they could have been just as compelling as anything that happened in Kingslanding. As they were in the books.

The main one for me is Cersei, in the books one of her absolute key character traits is that every man wants her and she uses that sex appeal to manipulate them. I don’t think she does this once in the series and I’m not sure Lena Headey was the right cast for that personality type. She did fantastic with what she was given though.
Other more minor characters who were seriously miscast were Mance, Renly/Loras (Renly in particular is butchered in the show), Mace Tyrell (who is a bumbling idiot rather than a proud and prickly lord) and Jorah (who they make farrrrr more likeable in the show.

I will say in the books Tyrion tenure as Hand of the King is far less him being 12 steps ahead, as him barely being more skillful than Ned. He manages to get over the more incompetent players that are Cersei and Pycell, mostly by doing so alienating potential allies, Cersei being his sister and Pycell a Lannister lackey. His attempt at Justice just see him removing Littlefinger pawn to have him replacing him with Varys pawn, and Varys and Littlefinger running circles around him while Tyrion is too busy self congratulating. For example when Tyrion do his letters plot to find the traitor who give information to Cersei Varys outright tell Tyrion he know exactly what he’s doing yet Tyrion still think he played him for some reasons, and for it he end up having to reward with an absurdly large Lordship to Littlefinger for what was overall relatively minor actions. And he’s still very much a villain. He knows he work for the bad side but doesn’t care, he doesn’t have any regrets for the war crimes his side his committing, etc.

Also we hear about danny and her dragons in Westeros from season 1 to season 7,they always mention that. King's landing always knows in the show. It always feel like the same place, not the moon lol

We stan Emilia Clark bc she has 2 brain aneurisms between 2 different seasons and still came back to slay Queen Daenerys. There are very few episodes where her acting is ehh even after all that going on in her personal life.

Stannis saves the Night's Watch by defeating Mance Rayder and then Mance's army becomes Jon Snow's army which he uses to recapture Winterfell in the Battle of the Bastard's. Also when Stannis is attacking Winterfell it gives Sansa and Theon a chance to escape. So stannis still had a part to play.

The "spectacular conclusion" of season 6 is why i hate it so much. You don't blow up half your cast like that, killing your plot threads, then ignore it next season!

Always looked at the lack of battles early on as very deliberate, as it was the dialogue and politics that were the heart of the story. I remember being impressed by the restraint D&D had- before maybe beliveing it was all just budget concerns. It's like they knew their story had to impress because they couldn't rely on action... my how the turn tables. GREAT video btw! Been binging your retrospectives.

The relationship between wildlings and the crows seemed real simple to me, you say they're like different people before and after egret. The bit with egret, the bit in between, that was when we learned more about them, showing that they're not just evil raiders like stories of them say.

    My imaginative ending for GOT:
I remember seeing episode 2 of season 8. A scene where theon tells his sister he wants to fight with sansa and that yara will go back to the iron islands, making me believe that she was getting as isolated and save as you can be, as long as the ice doesn't freeze. And in that moment I thought that the white walkers would overrun Winterfell in the next episode and that theon would get all the survivors to a retreat at the iron islands. I believed that the whites would keep on going south, where they would eventually meet cerseis soldier's unprepared because cersei expected maybe the northman and Dany coming for her but not the undead. All the soldiers that were "save" in hiding (and the dragons) would then take the searoute to support cerseis troupes against the whites (literally the only thing that would save everybody is to fight together, maybe by default or not voluntarily but still). While the battle takes place Dany has to burn down most of kings landing because they are almost only whites left, rolling over everything. While Jon tries to make out (from the back of rhaegal) where the night king is. The main battle is almost where the battle of blackfire took place in season two. Jaime, Brienne, theon and Yara are taking the commander role on the ships before marching on the shore. There are not many dothrakis left, but those who are, are blood thirsty and ready to die for their khalessi or completely destroyed because of their second travels on sea. Meanwhile Dany lands with drogon directly on the red keep and watches as the last reserves of wild fire explode. The whites left in the city after the first dragon fire attack are slow because of the city structures that are to narrow and small for so many beings. So they divide more and more into smaller lines. Then the night king comes into sight (the whites brought their fog to kingslanding, including a little snowfall). Jon does not want to give him much time to think about where to attack first, so he wents straight at him. Rhaegal and viserion fight. Bronn and some men are targeting viserion with the ballistics, but have to wait for a good moment or they shoot Jon from the sky. Not the night king. While Dany starts flying drogon to help Jon and fry some whites on the way. Jaime and Arya are on their way to cersei. On separated paths. Jaime sneaked away to see where his sister was. While Arya and the hound try to guide her sister, Tyrion and some survivors to a "save place" that Sansa already knows from the battle in season two. They meet some whites already in the inner red keep and Arya and the hound struck them down. On their way, they walk by the throneroom and see cersei sitting in it. Wineglass in hand and crown on the head. But otherwise dirty and very distressed looking. The mountain standing behind her. When seeing Tyrion, she completely looses it. Smashing her glass on the throne and running up to her brother, with the sharp glass in her hand to attack him. Sansa almost immediately jumps Infront of Tyrion and Arya is almost perplexed, but Cersei doesn't get as far as hurting sansa, because the tip of a sword starts coming out of her belly. She falls on her knees, turns around and sees Jaime. (You could also say cersei already got bitten and resurrected and Jaime killed her out of mercy. But I thought this was poetic). Jaime and Tyrion cry their eyes out, because their family is just fucked up, while they take cerseis body with them to the retreat place. The hound stays behind fighting with his brother so the others can run for it. Tormund, Brienne and some wildlings are defending the front as a big scream of viserion roars through the air. Bronn got him. It's not enough to make him land but he's noticeable hurt. Dany flies some loops to give the soldiers space to aim on viserion and to burn some whites on the ground and as drogon flies straight upwards again, he bites into viserions wing and tores a great part of flesh of it. While rhaegal and viserions claws are at eachother. Theon gets Bran to the place in the red keep where the godswood once stood and just waits, leaving theon completely anxious and unknowing. Meanwhile Bronn and his men are getting ready to aim at viserion again as the wall under them begins to shake. Some parts broke down and some men with it. Their Arrow on the other hand, now way of course, hits rhaegal directly in the chest. The dragon screams and directly sinks to the ground, breaking through the ceiling of the red keep. Jon was completely beat up, but since he was on the back of the dragon, he was lucky. The Arrow missed him but the impact on the ground crushed him and especially his dragon. Rhaegal screams without a break and the night king comes quite fast, even though viserion was also very badly injured. Dany follows them instantly to the ground, getting off drogon and letting him guide her to the throneroom where they all were (hint danys scene walking into a throneroom that's destroyed and full of ash/snow). Jon gets up, fucking destroyed, and faces the night king, not able to comfort rhaegal in this moment. While viserion turns to Dany. When she sees viserion that close and that wounded, she starts tearing up, remembering him when he was small. Since drogon is much bigger than viserion and not hurt at all, he takes the chance to step in front of Dany and immediately starts attacking viserion with fire while coming closer, biting in his throat as viserion tries the last time to attack back. Rhaegal and viserion die shortly after eachother.
And now some ideas for the ending:
-first and foremost, ofcourse does the hound win the battle against his brother. Maybe by pushing him into flames for once. Sandor will be almost dead after the fight and Arya will find him and execute him out of mercy and friendship. The mercy kill she didn't give him originally after the fight with Brienne (season 4?)
    - Sansa realizes that Tyrion is a fucking gem and stays married to him. Not necessarily in a romantic way, but partnership way. Because they never ever want to be forced to marry anyone again and they can trust each other.
    And now the important stuff:
    - Jon manages to kill the night king but dies shortly after, fulfilling the reason he was Brought back to life. And Dany gets to sit on the iron throne, maybe even pregnant from Jon🤷 (they hinted that she maybe still can have children)
    - Or Dany gets killed by the night king and never gets to sit on the throne. Jon has to save bran (Arya style) and gets to be next king (not because he wants to, but because its his birthright and he would be good at ruling just)
    - Dany and Jon both die, kinda fulfilling their prophecy's of "a Targaryen has to sit on the iron throne when the white walkers come" (house of the dragon) and "being resurrected/the heir to the throne for a specific reason" and Gendry becomes fucking king as only fucking heir to Robert (I would've loved that, to be honest😂 because the story would've made a full circle. Ned and Robert would've joined their houses indirectly (Gendry being king in the south and Arya being queensguard for her sister in the north), again a baratheon taking over after a Targaryen etc.)
-And the throne is destroyed by drogon but accidentally while he fought with viserion
Well... Thx for reading that. I legit held that in me for 3 years now 😂 and dry for spelling mistakes. English is not my first language ✌️

I'm kind of surprised you didn't get any comments so I just thought I would say I enjoy what you've come up with, it is a long sight better than what was aired and thematically makes more sense and gives the characters a better wrap up than what we got. I really wish we had got something so much better than we did 😭

The source material wasn't "exhausted" imo. Sure there would always have been a limit for them, but they adapted 1 book (ASoS) into two seasons (S3&4) but then they adapted two books (AFfC & ADwD) into one season (S5). If they were willing to keep the slow pace and use all the source material rather than rushing and cutting so much of the last two books it would have lasted them a few more seasons (at least 2 if not 3).
