Edgar Meyer makes the bow funky. It takes skill to play with a good sound and good time at that speed. But more than that, Mr. Meyer has this bouncing 16th note pules that reminds of the great funk bass player's bubbling bass lines. And somehow he generates that with the bow. Its amazing.
I've never heard a more captivating performance on the Bass -- regardless of genre, or whether upright or electric. I haven't seen a lot of Chris Thile's videos, but from what I *_have_* watched, this is the first time I've found somebody among *_ALL_* of the excellent musicians that have shared the stage with Chris who's as riveting as he is.
Edgar is the man! He's mentored bassist like Victor Wooten and Ray Brown and other muscians like Bella Fleck. Also collabes regularly with YoYo Ma and of course, Chris Thile and Stuart Duncan. _Goat Rodeo Sessions_ might be one of the greatest "super groups" ever!
I would like to describe these two guys as, "musicians musicians" .... does that make sense ? Mr Thile slips into a Nashville lick on a climb, for. a few notes ... I LOVE it. Thank you for posting it (Y)
that is a well-loved Dudenbostel that Chris is playing. I've seen videos of it when it was brand new in 2002... seven years later he's still making it sizzle.
This is what I bought my DAC (digital to analogue converter) for. I can hear the high-fidelity timbre and wooden squeak of the double bass! Can't get enough of this perfect stuff.
Sure, Thile is a multi-genre, multi-instrument genius, a composer and arranger with few peers, a prodigy, a tireless, open-minded, synthesizing wonder, a once a generation sort of occurrence, but what really amazes me? He made the mandolin sexy. Mandolin players now getting laid a lot thank him very, very much.
guys guys what are these discussions about?... who cares if people are remembered or not... who needs to be remembered... when you're dead you're gone and end of story... do you think Bach is around to see and hear the whole world playing his music like he probably never could have imagine it could be played?... these cats don't care if their work stays for the prosperity other than their life time... they're way over that... they're just having fun... happy to be able to do what pleases them.
@Clanidan actually I think that's Chris's Gibson F5 since the head scroll is still intact in this video. His Dudenbostel lost its head scroll when Thile fell after a show once.
OOOhhh, and check out The Punch Brothers (with Chris Thile) with Rob Moose playing Brandenburg Concerto #3 @ Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Really GREAT stuff!
Look up the "Fiddle and Alternative Strings Forum", and search for "audacity". You have to register (it's free) to search. I started a thread there in 2010 aug. explaining how to do exactly what you are wishing, plus others chimed in with more.
@PerfectCellX Truth is, human beings are incredible and can do much more than the biblical satan could dream of. Most of us are like me though, sorry as hell. These two men work hard for their satisfaction. I don't believe for a second in talent. There are too many hours spent for it to be "talent". God or the devil didn't do it. they did it!

Edgar & Chris are from another planet.........Amazing.
this is my childhood. I watched this everyday after school when i was a kid
Thats some really awesome music to be listening to as a kid. It's sad people grow up with all the trash pop music today.
@Charles Jackson That's awesome, nothing but the best!!

Agree! Edgar is a legendary muscian _and_ performer!!!
When you're having a rough time tracking down your inspiration, this is the best way to find it again.
Ah!! This is amazing. I can hear the personalities of the two, they're a very humorous duet :)
Two geniuses...what else would one expect! Amazing!
Otherworldly perfection.

edgar meyer dude... just amazing
Does humor belong in music?...yess for sure...these guys are impeccable...never change a winning team😆💪
I was there. The whole concert was as amazing as you could imagine . . .
a lot of people have talent but it takes a whole lot more than just that to get to these guys' level
Two wonderful geniuses !

Edgar does it without frets, so he wins by a whisker. What a ride!

A M A Z I N G
something this dirty should be illegal
musical reality, outstanding
grrrrreat. come to switzerland, please!!!
3:28 to 4:30 is just perfection. Love it
I lost my shit over that solo too...
outrageous, honestly
besides there will always be people who like you and dislike you no matter what you do. Peace.
Edgar makes this look so effortless... Bass players around the world (myself included) should strive for technique as perfect as his
Great duet.
doublebass player is so tender and accurate..)

The day Chris Thile misses a note is the day the world ends
Magic!!!
amazing!!!
Holly cow that's awesome huh
Chris Thile is so fuckin' cool.
WOW!
i don't know...i can hear the exchange between the two. sometimes one chases the other does the chasing and then switch roles.
woooooooooow
I just clapped out loud, then realised that I wasn't there...
lol that's awesome
@Selinnna A Thile fan from Switzerland?! Me too!!! Love Chris. Where you from?
Thank you powers that be for giving me the brain
Edgar's intonation is almost incomparable on bass. I know he has dots on his bass but still, he's like not human.
I'm with you! He's less of a human and more like an a.i., android, metronome with arms and legs ...but also human enough to have *tons* of soul!
No dots on upright bass all in the head n hands
I have seen the video n there r fret marker dots in the fingerboard of his bass rare
I assume the bass represents the farmer and the mandolin the duck... more fun to imagine it the other way around
Holy. Shit.
Do I hear traces of patchwork girlfriend as well as jumbo? The beginnings of them, maybe, since I assume this was recorded long before?
Why is this not getting 500,000,000 views? Fuck me, world!
@chappinger12 I think you're right. Also to amend my earlier comment, the Dude was completed in '99, not '02.
I'm still here
wwwWWWWwwwooooOOOOOoowwwW !

He's using his subconscious mind. ;)
Where and when ?
Its because Thile is a God
3:34 Edgar does a baby moon walk
@aquaboy386 Yes totally amazing
@aquaboy386 I own that album and it is absolutely fantastic.
was this filmed at Ithaca college??????????
@sepptrutsch from bern!!
Could easily have seen Chris Thile ousting Vai in Zappa's band ;)
Hippie crack. I can't stop playing 4:01 to 4:19...
"Hippy crack"? That's what we used to call nitrous oxide..😆
I love the part starting @ 1:28
fuck, that's fluid..... genus , genus
Enthralling.
OMFG!!! Jude Law can play mandolin!!! =O
you notice that Chris looks half asleep throughout the whole song lol
@Irshkboy Definitely not the case. If anything, he's maturing in the opposite direction. Pick up Antifogmatic and rock out.
@jtmoses92 I bet he does mess up plenty in his mind! Us mortals just cant hear it....
I heard it happen once! but it was because he broke a string lol
I was just thinking about you
at 5:26 is he taking a poo?
I like te part where Edgar looks like he smells a fart! Thanks &/!& is my birthday!!!
Whew. I gotta get off UA-cam and go practice.
Bill Phillips haha!
hilarious
@PerfectCellX video2mp3
sofa king good
@jtmoses92 if he did mess up you would never know it.
Think "Peter and the Wolf". It's a story(ok, well probably more like chase the duck), not a melody. :-)
@nationalparksign hahahaaa
4:07 jizzes pants
