Had not ever heard of Womak, thank you for educating us 😘
Honestly, I hadn't either. But the more I dug, the more I wanted to know. Sadly, a lot of his story seems to be missing in action. Just a few highlights survived. But at least one writer is working on a book about him. Fingers crossed they fill in some of the gaps.
I was a massive fan of the gay publications of the 70's, 80's and 90's i bought a lot of it. I did not know that about Womack, but I did buy a lot of Larry Flints publications. I loved all gay pornographic novels of the era as well I was in my late teens at the time and it was one of the ways I could discreetly admire the beautiful physic of the male body.
Thanks for the educational introduction and I will certainly google him, once of course after I have finished ogling this gorgeous montage. Please keep them coming, there much appreciated.
Cheers from Down Under.
Larry and his publishing empire were the gateway for a lot of us. I used to know some writers who worked there and sounds like they had a great time and were treated well by Flynt and his team. As for Womack, he's new to me too, but seems even more interesting...he bought the printing press with money he made from an illegal investment scheme while teaching at prestigious colleges and boarding schools. He even owned a boarding school at one point before closing it (under mysterious circumstances), losing a couple of teaching jobs, and refocusing on Guild Press. The rest is (untold) history! :-)
Hyman's Bookstore in Des Moines Iowa was famous for being the source of "adult" magazines, straight and gay. The general periodical offerings were eclectic. The tall racks, with the "good stuff" up high were overseen by eagle-eyed Mr. Denny. I never learned whether that was the first or last name of the tall, thin man with a grey crew cut and severe visage who kept me --an inquisitive and gay without being able to express that young teen from laying hands--or even my eyes--in the publications featured here. I had somehow /somewhere bought a copy of Young Physique when I was 10 years old and wanted more. Mr. Denny gave me free rein with subversive stuff like Paul Krasner's Realist satire mag but sternly--without uttering a word-- diverted me from those upper racks. It was only when I was a college freshman in 1965 that I could order them by mail from Hyman's. That is so long ago and seems like innocent times--probably because I knew so little about what gay lives were like then. Thanks for sharing this vid about a brave man who provided comfort to so many while making a good living for himself.
Amazing how people like Mr. Denny and magazines like those Professor Womack published can make such an impression on so many of us. I'm sure there are modern-day equivalents, but I prefer the "old" examples. They're more "concrete" in my hard head. lol
@@CollidePress A side note: I was pondering what to do the cloth face masks I acquired in the early days pf Pandemic when we thought those would give adequate protection. I told some younger queer friends that they might be repurposed as posing straps for retro photo shoots. The term and concept didn't register with any of them.
@@greggi47 Bless their mess. :-p
I didn't know the story of Larry Flynt. Very interesting. Thank you.
Larry was a interesting dude. But Lynn might've been more so...not sure. He was cagey. :-)
Thank you for posting this homage to Dr. Womack. Do you or any of your viewers know the title of a book about his life I may buy? Thank you again, DA
Hi! To my knowledge, there isn’t a singular book about him…yet. A writer named Phillip Clark has a site looking for more information. The professor was a little elusive it seems. I haven’t read much of it, but Womack seems to be one of the main characters in BUYING GAY by. David K. Johnson. What I have read of the book is amazingly well researched and written. Hope that helps.
@@CollidePress Thank you, Collin. DA
P.P.S. You'll never see prices like that anymore!
Cheers again.
I'm glad you back:)
Thank you, dear! 🌈✌️
Well that’s it I’ve found the source of my fascination with male model magazines. I loved these magazines and of course the photos. Thanks Clint❤😊
Thanks, Ray! I couldn't find any evidence that Womack ever took any photos himself, but he certainly published most, if not all, of the leading photographers of the day. Not even sure how many magazines and publications he ultimately published. He remains (mostly) a mystery, but a fasccinating, pivotall one in our collective history, in my opinion.
P.S. Yes miraculously those publications did manage to make there way down under, I was so grateful. Us gays, were far and wide.
Cheers.
''Advanced Guide To Cruising'' made me smile have to say... ''Son, isn't getting the new Buick enough?''
Thanks for sharing this, also love the music as well.
Thanks...it was a fun one to research and make. There's a lot that's still not known about "Professor Womack," but what is known would be a great miniseries. Think Dead Poet's Society + Catch Me If You Can + The People vs. Larry Flynt. Glad you enjoyed! :-)
G'day Clint an extended posting on a topic you've already touched on. Its good to remember the time before modern instant communication became the norm. Seeking out the bookstores in other areas/cities hoping you wouldn't be seen getting your fix of a physiques magazine to take home, read and react to in the privacy of your bedroom. Then how to dispose of said sticky paged magazine safely 😮 Oh the joys of being a horny (younger?) guy. The monthly magazines like Gay Times (UK) which had the personal ads at the back all via box numbers, the wait to get/send replies. Now its all instant. I wonder what it will be like in say the future, will it be telepathic conversation. I quess thats far too Buck Rogers....or is it, after all AI is already here. Anyways, sit back, grab a tea/coffee and buiscuits and enjoy the ride. Cheers DougT 🇫🇴
G'day, Doug. Hope you enjoyed the extended trip down memory lane. Thought Womack deserved it since most of the fame goes to the models and photographers. Without folks like him putting their money where their mouths were, gay magazines wouldn't have happened. I left out A TON of stuff about this guy. One of the funniest is he actually ran his magazine empire from inside a mental hospital while he was technically incarcerated...using the mental illness defense to get himself transferred to a hospital with a private room and all his office supplies. Years later, he published pamphlets that helped absolish the mental illness label in the psychiatrist manual. Not sure what other stuff he was up to, but he was...colorful (despite being an albino lol).
The Male Bride slide reminded me of the time Joe Pine had a guest on his show that was pressing for the right to bring home a foreign (male) bride from Viet Nam the same as a straight man could bring home a foreign bride. Joe Pine would bring guest on that he could verbally pillory, much to the delight of his audience. But, his show also gave glimpses into lifestyles that mainstream society knew little about.
Yeah, I think straight society forgets we're just like them...but with better style. Mostly. :-p
That is an informative narrative, and the montage is awesome (also informative). And the music was beautiful and perfect. I love the model at 11:44 who has the flattop boogie (with fenders) hairstyle. I find the styled pompadours, slick back styles, and flattops with fenders from the '50s and early '60s to be very appealing. Perhaps it's because as a child the men who excited me had those styles. After all these years, they're still exciting me. They started disappearing around 1965 and had all but vanished by 1967. That said, they seem to be making a comeback today--a very good thing from my perspective! 🙂
Glad you enjoyed, RJ. It was a tough one to research, but oh so rewarding. As for your favorite period and style, if you're not familiar with photographer Karlheinz Weinberger's "rockabilly" work...I think you might appreciate his photos.
@@CollidePress Thank you. I'll check him out.
Thank you for posting this video. I came out in Washington in 1968. The bookstores mentioned in the video were like classrooms introducing me to gay life. The bar called the Hidaway (located at 9th and Penn) introduced me to the beautiful sense of community. Although not mentioned in the video, Womack's Mark II cinema was always packed with men and it was there I saw the immortal movie Song of the Loon. This video made me so nostalgic for a very beautiful time in my life! One puzzle however. There was a porn shop with peep shows on H St near 13th that I cannot remember the name of. I don't know if Womack ran it or not. Do you know anything about it? I described it in detail in my memoir that I published back in 2019 and would love to know more about it!!!!!!!!!
Fascinating! I found a couple sites with pages from the short-lived newspaper he published. Circa 1970. I can look it up if you want. Since you lived in the area and have some firsthand knowledge of the bookstores and theatres, reach out to the writer who’s working on a book about him. If you Google H. Lynn Womack you’ll find the project site. This guy deserves a full biography and you might be able to add some context and color w/o knowing him. I’m fascinated by him and empire.
@@CollidePress WOW, thank you--I did drop him a line and would be delighted to help. I wrote about this period of my gay life extensively in my memoir.
That's awesome! Mr. Clark commented on the video, so I suspect you two connected. Fingers crossed you both help bring Womack's story to light with the dignity and respect I think he earned.
be here now do no harm help others be still close eyes listen to your breathing🏳️🌈
Nicely done! I'm close to finishing the biography of Dr. Womack that I've been researching and writing for some years now. I'll be sure to share more information about it when it's complete and there's a publisher.
Mr. Clark! I've suggested several people reach out to you about your project. Stumbled across your site and am cheering you on. I obviously couldn't find out a ton about Professor Womack, but I found enough that make me KNOW your book is going to be compelling...and likely the basis of a miniseries or movie about him. Fingers crossed. If there's anything I can do, please reach out. Also, there's an uncensored version of the video on Substack (for free): collidepress.substack.com
@@CollidePress So far, I've been able to interview one person who became aware of my biography based on your video and this comments section, so thank you! Some valuable additional information about Womack's main adult bookstore and movie theater. Anyone who sees these comments should feel free to reach out to me -- the creation of books is a group effort.
That's AWESOME! Rooting for you and your book. Cheers.

2:23 Sweet Jeebus!
Amen and praise be! Thanks for watching. :-)
I knew about Womack I have a copy of Fizeek that I bought in a book shop in England in the 90s it was an interesting read and was not smutty or outrageous as say Playboy was which portrayed women as objects of sex and fun for the hetero men.
He's an interesting figure in publishing history. Looking forward to the biography that's being written about him. Unlike Flynt and straight publishers, I think Womack and his photographers genuinely liked their subjects.
❤❤
4:47 I've had a boyfriend like him ! Blonde hair athletic body with the same mixture of angelism and lubricity 😇😈💖
