  • A Study on Homoerotics in Great Britain’s Encyclopedic Panel Shows, or: What Happened to the Most Homosexually Loaded Aerosaltants in Panel Show History
    UA-cam has paused the ability to link so refer to the comments for the essay! Thank you :)
    This is the culmination of over 230 hours worth of research, media translation, cross-reference, editing, composition, and tittuping. An absolute labor of love.
    The song is La Foule by Edith Piaf, to reference the role of the Fool utilized on this television show, to which I speak often in my short essay, that you would recognize, should you have read it. I will admit with bashful reconsideration that this choice in accompaniment is greatly on the nose, alas it is too late.
    I cannot stress how wary I am about copyright infringement and I must emphasize that this is utterly for educational purposes and complete rights must and are currently attributed by me to their rightful owners the BBC and Parlophone Records Ltd. Though it be confined to slightly under 2000 words, the writings on my genuine research of this topic are for the purposes of the self-motivated academic study on the intersection of aggrandized, televised, personality-based chemistries in panel-show production, and homoeroticism in encyclopedic contexts. Which you would know, should you have read it.
    Happy pride month, Thank you, and goodnight.

    Incredible essay/written analysis. I've always loved to ponder the dynamics of the famed "homoerotic-male-host-duo". Such an interesting subject when you look behind the proverbial curtain and analysis is refreshing because there are really so many things that can be said about the concept.

      If there is more material found since this work of art was compiled, it begs for a Part II.
      How unbelievable it must be to be part of the live audience when these pair of Absolute Champion Humans spar back and forth with their banter. Entertaining, Educational and Funny beyond description.
      A stageshow "QI DOWNUNDER" would sell it's absolute arse off.
      A logistical nightmare with Stephen, Sandi and the 6 to 8 regular British celebrities to tour with them getting the same time off BUT wouldn't it be the best show ever.

    Your treatise is close to correct, but I would beg you to read and pay attention to Alan's Book- which explains his ability to flirt with all sorts. I don't think You are quit En Pointe until you do. Also, I think the knowledge of the book put the stops on Stephen and their "flame" flickered and died for Stephen. Otherwise I do agree with the flirtation, only I cannot assign it any value,sexual or otherwise.

    • @gayva
      @gayva  Місяць тому +2

      Thanks for raising this. It's something that I thought about while I was making this and have kind of been waiting for an excuse to talk about. Cause the onscreen dynamic did indeed consist of comments, from both Stephen and Alan himself, which referenced Alan’s schoolboy caricature and the way Stephen and he played with it. Just one example being 6:37.
      Something I think is important to consider is how much stephen's gender and sexuality is what raised the question for us in the first. I think its important to be aware of the implications of labeling a fake dynamic inappropriate, when a large factor to us considering it up for debate is that Stephen is a gay man who has fake element of power as host over the panelists. For instance, Sandi “flirts” with Alan as well, and will take the opportunity to chide Alan when he gives a simple childlike answer. Obviously nowhere near the extent that Stephen does, but the key point is that she, unlike Alan's abuser, is a woman and a lesbian, but she holds the same power stephen does. (Genuinely asking!) if we should also call it into question when she jokes with Alan in the same way stephen did?
      Another aspect has to do with media literacy. Several people have also mentioned this, but stephen speaks to all the other panelists with this patronizing chastize/reward bit, its just that we observe it as meaning something more with alan because alan is in every episode and therefore he and stephen are the key players in the dynamic. I mention in my essay as well, but there’s this perceived “risk” in there being some kind of “real” relationship on the show making it somehow an actual dynamic. But these are performers and comedians who are playing parts as assigned by the producers. Both have spoken on how they act differently with one another off of QI, namely that stephen treats Alan with equal respect (and lack of flirtation lol). can give refs if curious.
      I can’t actually speak for either involved of course, but those are most of my thoughts for now. I’d like to hear what else you and other people have to say, and don’t at all want to appear over-reverent or blinded to circumstance and context and so on. But, again, I think its important to keep in mind the standards we are holding over these people and why we are holding them, as well as that they are performing parts which are productionally assigned to them.

      Never, in recorded history has a gay man married a woman, and had children with her. Nor, in recorded history has a straight man engaged in homoeroticism, despite the fact that homoeroticism does not require one to be gay, or engage in any degree of physical sexual interaction with another person.
