dude please make more tutorials like this explaining the properties on a intermediate level i would really appreciate that !!!
I've retopologised my model three times, it's taken me three years and now as if by magic all my blender issues were resolved thanks to "applying scale" :) A sincere thank you for ending my Blender despairathon.
My impression is that, in Edit mode, you're "really" moving the coordinates of the vertices around in the space. In Object mode, Blender is just applying the "scale" factor to figure out how to display the vertices without "actually" moving them. Then when you hit "apply scale" all the vertices are moved to their calculated position.
This scale thing in Object Mode not really moving vertices is how I like to understand it. Like what you said. But if you do a scale in object, dont apply scale, go into edit mode, the vertices have moved. So the way you and I like to understand it is not really so cos the vertices have moved.. Then without doing anything, go back to object mode, the the scale is still not 1:1:1 yet the vertices as shown in edit mode shows it has moved. It is so hard to comprehend.
Thanks, bro! I needed a lesson about using "scale" like that, I'm a Russian speaker, and in our community don't talk in detail about this theme! Thanks!
Most underrated blender channel ever! Your way of explaining is so crystal clear! I've struggled allot with applying scale because I sometimes forget it and then strange stuff happen without knowing why. Now I'll never forget again! Keep em coming!
Thanks for the super important tips. I thought I would know about the reasons why to apply the scale but I learned something again. Since i started learning blender it's so good to see how active the community is. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for this, man. None of the other tutorials, that I've tried, have taken the time to point this stuff out. They have said apply the scale here and there, but haven't explained, so in my own little projects I have been neglecting this.
Very well explained. Thank you for this
Thank you so much, couldn't wrap my head around why and when i have to apply the scale. Love this video!
This is gold. Ive hit gold!!! SUper simple and awesome explanation, without all the extra unnecessary explanation. love your way of explaining things. I like all the tutorials that tell me exactly what to do, but they miss out on telling me why they do what they do. Its super important to know why your doing what your doing so you can understand the concept behind it and make changes if you want to.
That was excellent information on using the scale. Thanks Joey.
brilliant explanation. just what I was looking for.
What an incredibly helpful tutorial. Thanks so much for making it.
This the most direct explanation vid I have ever seen. Instantly subscribed.
perfect explanation! thank you!
Joey not only is this tutorial spectacular and useful this tutorial was something I personally needed to see. Excellent job :D
Thank you for this :D
Thank you! You explain really well and I got a lot of information from this video!
Very clear explanation, friend!
Thanks for explaining this so well 👍
this is the exact thing i wanted bruh i hv been searching it everywhere and i got all of that stuffs from u r channel thankss man ;D
thank you for making this video 💖
Awesome dude, thank you
I was kinda struggling with how scale works and the difference it makes being in object or edit mode. The way you explained it was great, everything just finally clicked in my head :)
Really good, Thank you!
Thanks for an easy to understand tutorial.
This was very helpful, thank you
Thank you man , you just solved my two hours ongoing headache
omg!!!! THAAANKS! this is the tutorial i was looking for, i was kinda desperate before find it jajaj
Thank you, I really needed this?
Thank you very much, it helps a lot.
Just found your channel, awesome content! Thank you for making these!
... also, I meant to say, I really enjoy your characters/sculpting style!
Thank you
Thanks, very helpful!
Learned something new thanks
Thank you so much. This video is my Tylenol to my headache
Oooh meeen this so helpiiiiing thank u joey
man you are really good
Thanks dude
Thankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk you bro my characters was getting thin and flat in scale, finally I found out how to properly scale.
Thank you for this tutorial
10/10 tutorial, informative on all aspects and to the point, subcribtion "applied"
TY!
thanks👍
Excellent explanation. Very important also to applying the scale to get (1,1,1)and how it affects texturing with png or jpeg images, in that it helps prevent future problems the the texturing because of the scaling in object mode. Not an issue when scaling in Edit mode. That's just the way blender works. Thanks!
man I just discovered your channel and its really awesome!
I have a suggestion for a tutorial and your character sculpting: How to use Mixamo on your characters, that would be cool to see :)
Very nice
excellent
How could I adjust the scale of an armature and the animations at the same time? Say I wanted to resize the model?
If you find yourself in the last situation mentioned, you can scale all of the bones' locations in the graph editor till it matches ;-)
thanks buddy
wow you saved me from artistic rehab 😀 subd
Thanks now I really know
thanks, i always search on google about why my modifiers and texture are doing weird things (stretched textures) and people seem to just answer with “apply scale” but never said any reason why
now i know. thanks for tip
Thank you for the explanation , this applies too on the rotation and location like the scale?
yep it does
i wish i saw this video years ago and save me such frustration
FINALLY, i've been looking for which one of scale and dimensions are the size of the actual box you can see for 3 HOURS. like if i made a 7m wide house, the item i see is actually 7m. people have indicated that it was dimensions but it didn't make sense because why would the other thing be smaller. i wanted to make dim and scale 1:1 because something else doesn't make sense in my head. Can you explain why they aren't the same?
It doesn't make sense to have dimension and scale be 1:1 because scale is relative and dimension is absolute.
Scale is how big something is compared to it's "original" size. Dimension is like if you measured it with a ruler and told me how wide it was.
Niceeee
Thanks. I had this problem using array and an empty. 😨
Feels like half the time I'm spending in Blender I'm applying scale. 😘
I like to apply the scale on the default cube twice before deleting, just to be thorough.

im having trouble using a plain with a cloth modifier on a mirrored object. A collision modifier is active on the mirrored object, however whenever the the plane collides, in falls into the object, only reacting to one of the inner walls of the mirrored object
update: tried to change the scale in edit mode with the transform tool, not the true model scale tab, and apply the scale, and the same issue arises with the cloth plane not fully recognizing the object.
.
update 2: after fiddling around a bit, I found out that the normals were off, so after applying scale, I went to edit mode, mesh, normals, recalculate outside. thank god for Blender Stack Exchange
hey thanks for posting this with the updates. appreciate it!
how is it possible you have perfect cube on 2:29, but there is X scale at 5? this topic drives me crazy... thanks
Hey how can i changed the dimensions without the scale changing too.😢
The scale will change automatically when you change the dimensions. You can always move it in edit mode if you don't want the scale to change though.
well i guess i had to make that mistake... scaled a sphere to start my 1st male base mesh, and once i finished it after hours, because i resized the sphere in object mode, i couldnt apply shade smooth, and going to sculpt mode was warning me that the scale wasnt uniform and that my sculpting would be inpredictable.. as i did hundreds i guess it's basically going to trash :'( at least now i know :'( thnx buddy
5 years and I'm at this point lol!!!!
This didn't really do anything. All it did to my model was reset the values to 1 and leave the UV grid just as stretched as before
No answers as usual lmfao, how do u fix uniform scale? Cntrl A and apply Scale only ruins it.
Right so scale is not an issue in edit mode which means the real question here is why would you ever want to try "edit" your object in object mode???
It's useful for animation where you want to scale something back to it's original value
@@JoeyCarlino thank you for clearing that up
Very informative, thnk u!
what?im here to learn how to apply bone pose mode mesh scale.....you are telling me not to?
From what I gather, the issue is that certain transformations are not commutative
how to change 10m size cube to 1m
Multiply by 0.1, then apply the scale
Great video, but it would have been better if explained why it happens, I think it because it applies the bevel/rig modifiers and only then scales the mesh, which is why the bevel are stretched with the models. But great video non the less
I think the video did a great job of explaining scale in such a way it did not confuse newbies like me.
I encourage all new users never to apply their scale, finding workarounds to scale problems will enhance your learning and make you a better user.
I feel sooo dumb.....
