I’ve had my 06’ XK for two years now and it has been ultra reliable. Other than two services costing around £650 in total and a main battery (the only time the car let me down) I have had no other running expenses. I’ve had numerous Jags over the years, around eight in total, but this car is my absolute favorite. Definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Economy is fair around town (18 to 20mpg) and I’ve had up to 32mpg on longer trips, which is excellent. I have voluntarily done some jobs that weren’t actually needed: New rear tyres to match the front Pirellis (it had Dunlops on when I bought it), A newer set of factory alloys to freshen up the appearance and a 20mm Eibach lowering kit fitted. I’ve also decided to replace a few of the bushes. They were still ‘acceptable’ but as I’ve decided to keep this car forever, I wanted them done.
As a daily, these are hard to beat. I ran a 2006 XK for 18 months back in 2015 and loved every minute of it. The initial warranty from the second-hand dealer took care of a leaking air-con condenser and a back-up battery for the alarm, and £50o of my own money went into a service and new rear upper-arm suspension bushes. There were times I could see 35mpg on a run taking it easy (Shell Vpower 99). It was so good I stupidly got rid and bought an F-Type V6, and then an F-Type V8 AWD, both of which proved to be very unreliable by comparison and felt cheap inside compared to the XK. When I can no longer afford to run the current DB11 as retirement approaches I shall probably revisit the late model XK with the 5L engine as they're gorgeous cars and everything you say in the video including the awful touch screen. However, in some ways I would be hard pressed to choose on looks between the XK8 and XK but having driven both the XK is far superior to the XK8 and feels way more modern.
I own an XK PORTFOLIO in Italian racing red ,blond extended leather interior , 5.0 V8 . Absolutely stunning motor car ! SMILES PER GALLON 😊👍🏻🇬🇧😊❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Jags are hidden gems ... I've had an XFS for the last 3 years ... stonking performance, also a swoopy Ian Callum design (albeit a saloon) ... comfy, fast, 4 doors so ideal for a Dadcar, big boot and over 3 years it's cost basic servicing and a set of tyres ...5.9secs to 60, 600NM of torque, 30-40 MPG ... you should maybe consider the XFS for your next Jaaaaag
It would be interesting to compare this to the old generation XK, as they are very different beasts. What a car, but good the main dealers as the previous owner highlighted!
6 years being a 5.0 2010 XKR owner, put about 40k miles in those years and spent easily 2-3k euro per year (rear diff seal, water pump, Michelin ps4, gearbox maintenance, 2 batteries, starter motor, replacement of corroded break lines, serviced every year)
Before Covid, on my daily commute I used to see a light blue 4.2 XK. Literally everyday; all weather, all times of the year the owner drove to work in their gorgeous XK and yes, it got dirty and grimy but the owner didn't just have the car as a Garage Queen; they drove it every day and I loved seeing it, because what better way to start a day than cruising along in your V8 Jag?. Thrown in a cup of tea or coffee for the journey and it sounds like perfection.
Great video. I’m a dad too, and only got to keep my 996 when I could prove I could fit a pram in the frunk. The kids are 8 and 10 now and still the 996 is both doing school runs and being developed by me as a B road hero car. I’m now subbed and looking forward to the next vid.
I have owned my 4.2XKR for 4 years now. I drive it to work every day in all weathers and really is my daily driver. It's always in need of a wash in the winter as there is little point in trying to keep it clean in the winter. In those 4 years it has truly never let me down or not started. I have had a new battery ( of course on one of these ), a supercharger coolant pump that failed but didn't stop the car from driving and that's it from a reliability point of view. There are of course things that I have chosen to do and things that I am going to do. On short runs of 5 miles or so ( my work commute ) it always achieve 18+ mpg even if freezing conditions, 20+ in the summer. Any further when it has reached normal operating temperature mid to high 20s+ is easy. Yes I carry out my own service and repair work as I have the facilities, which obviously helps. I have spent very very little money on maintenance, my experience has so far been very impressive when it comes to reliability. Yes tyres are pricey for decent rubber but that's a small price to pay for a great car. I will not be selling mine any time soon.
Yes sir, I owned 2 95/96 XJR6s….I had the lower and upper supercharger pulleys replaced…I also had a 98 XJR8…that was heavily modded…loved all three of those cars….something special about the x300 and x308….sorry…as soon as they went to the new body style from those cars and the new XKR’s was a big let down…but then I’m old school.
I bought a 2011 XKR~S new to date its total cost in repairs is £1658. Servicing which is done by Jaguar main dealers over the last 12 years is £4678. I would like to see a long term Ferrari owners expenditure. I do use my car for continental travel and weekends away in the uk.
I own a 2018 Granturismo but had 3 Jag XK,s previously. Honestly, the Jag is so reliable. Not one issue with any of them over 5 years. And as much as I love my Maserati I do miss my previous XKR 5 litre. Get the Jag
I inherited my dad’s XK a couple of months ago it’s an O6 4.2 and I’ve ended up loving the thing and dailying it Thinking of moving my tvr on and getting a convertible XKR instead more useable
You should look at the XKR body style before this one…specifically the XKR100 with the 20 inch BBS wheels…the older Jag-u-ars feel more British. Great videos as always…I hope you and your family are well.
@@dadcars there a R230 2005 SL55 AMG with 476hp supercharged V8 and a folding metal roof on autotrader atm. Under 10k and coupe in the winter, top down in the summer.
I have a 2007 XKR. It has been a solid performer, even at 133,000 miles. In two years and 14,000 miles of ownership I have had to replace three wheel speed sensors at £200 each. I have had to do lower control arms the first year for MOT and the rear bushings for MOT the second year roughly £500 each time. I have replaced the coils and plugs due to age (never been done) and falling gas mileage. I could have left them, but the performance was suffering a bit. The last bit was a failed seal on the steering rack that forced a new rack install. Got a rebuilt and did the whole thing for under £400. My only other complain is the fuel guage (like many of this vintage) is spotty. It's too expensive to replace, requiring a whole tank and both sensors. So in all, total cost of ownership based on NEEDED repairs, £2000. Now, initially that may seem like a lot, but the car cost me £11,500 due to the mileage. So for £13,500 I have an Iain McCallum designed, poor man's DB9! Oh, and it's been Viezu Tuned and now nets a whopping 486bhp while still getting 26mpg on the A9... Not at all bad! Listen to that supercharger scream!
Ian Callum is God. I have driven a DB12. The interior is a level above anything. But after some time, it makes you wonder if these types of cars are just ordinary-like cars dressed up, then, as you say, the experience is just the same. However, there are individual cars that just give another level of occasion for an owner. Good video.
The moment you said "you alright sweety" and i saw how tight your little angel was in the back i immidiately discounted the jag. i am a dad wishing for a gt and love your channel.
Great video, My Maserati Granturismo did 25mpg on a run, but now it seems stuck at 16mpg… you can cut that £4k maintenance by 75% if you do the work yourself and don’t do lots of miles. I know not everyone has the space, tools etc. but it is a relatively easy car to work on and google and forums provide the knowledge. I do like the Jag XK, but my Maserati was far cheaper than £7k! although I think I have now spent £7k including buying it.
My logic has always been if a car is driven frequently it should behave better than one which is garaged and only does small miles each year… also the parts cost with Maseratis is the same if you do the work yourself or not so I’d be interested to calculate how much cheaper it is to DIY. I am jealous of those with the ability to DIY though 😉
I think a lot of the cost with using specialists or (noooo….) main dealers are that they will replace the part rather than consider digging deeper. For example my parking brake was playing up and couple of people I talked to said replace the electric actuator at a cost of £1800. I took the drums apart, found the small metal actuator in the hub was seized so bit of emery paper and grease and it was all fixed for free. I suspect a lot of ‘broken’ stuff is changed needlessly on the road to finding the real and often cheap simple problem. Not sure how much I save in my struggle to fix stuff myself, but I would imagine it is in order of thousands a year. Certainly my Maserati would have cost thousands plus parts to fix over the last few weeks. In terms of ability - I am just too stupid to realise that I can’t do it, then by the time I start to realise that I am out my depth, I am already halfway through and past the point of no return! @@dadcars
I'm a huge jaguar fan and for the money that are terrific value for money, but as a dad car shouldn't a dad car be something that the whole family can fit in ,something that can transport at least 5 in comfort, have a huge boot and still have a little bit of punch for the weekend. I built such a car it was a 1988 ford sierra ghia estate but by the time I had finished with it it had well over 400 bhp and would go off the clock at 170 mph . F20YBT was its registration number Google the number to see the car . But now days I drive a volkswagan t6.1 204 dsg transporter from Van Haven. They make in my humble opinion the best dad cars going .luxury, space and style. Enough room for all the family two dogs and 5 bikes whats more to love 🤟
I had a c63 for a year and.loved it , 6.2 v8 goodness, Used it everyday but then went back to a trusty vw transporter, Now in the market again for some fun , having already done it i find it hard to justify 20 to 30 thousand pounds again , Jag xkr 5.0 is a bargain.
Jag depreciation has always made slightly older ones super affordable but definitely worth picking up enthusiast / low owner examples with history to give some peace of mind. Poor pickle is so squished in the back but super surprised a seat can even fit in there like that! I guess for parents with rear facing baby carriers they can still make it work for a bit or as the second car for emergencies.
Yeah not ideal in the back but once that seat was in there and little one was strapped in she had plenty of space and could even see out of the windows better 😊
The Auto press loved this car when it came out. It was mostly aluminium, and the relatively light weight made it surprisingly nimble and capable. Autocar pit it against rivals like the Bangle 6-Series and Mercedes SL and it crushed them. Even agamst an Aston DB9, to which it is very closely related, it only just lost out. If you can find an XKR version, than the extra horsepower makes it an even more exciting option. They're definitely showing their age, and more a GT than a pure sports car, but still quite a good option, if the tiny rear seat fits your needs.
Your conclusion is the question I have asked myself about trading a z4 coupe for an M2. Would I get that much more fun or should I stick to the z4. Can't wait to see more of your car journey. Great content
I’ve had an M2 for a while. I’ve also had a Z4MC for a couple of years. I don’t look at M2’s online very often, but I check Z4MC’s every week. It’s my biggest car selling regret to date. In comparison the M2 is more comfortable and modern, but the S54 is just epic in the little coupe.
I disagree with the inference that a Jaguar is less desirable or the "consolation prize" for those that can't afford something more expensive. As a Jaguar fan and I'm biased and if money were no object, I'd consider all on an equal basis. The Jaguar is the best value proposition.
Great video Ben. Agree with you that the Jag XK is probably the best bang-for-your-bucks you can find considering its Looks, Practicality and Performance. But for me, an Audi S5 series 1 with the 4.2 V8 and with much better practicality AND a Manuel Box tick all the boxes even louder. Also, the grunt from that V8 is something else. Quattro as well. Would like to see you check out if a BMW i8 can pass? And finally, a Bentley Continental GT with its WV12 and superior "Loveral" LUXURY... WHY haven't you tested or owned one yet...😁
@@dadcars Yeah I realized that, well done 👍. I'm a huge Lotus fan as well, so no wonder I like your channel so much. i8 and Conti GT coming soon? Cheers
Hi Ben. Hope your doing good. That's a cool Jaguar. I love the color and the interior. Tithe back seats are small looking, but they look nice. I loved the video. Keep up the awesome work. Stay safe and take care.
It's the 5.0 XKR wins by miles and it won't ruin you with maintenance either. I've had mine 4 years and not spent anything on it (aside servicing which is cheap too).
Great video and sweet co driver! Yes I think that these Jags are very good value especially if you buy a good one. Far better value than any thing else out there.
If you can find one an XF SV8 with the supercharged version of the 4.2 might make a good Dadcar. I had an S type R and loved it but lower priced ones might he getting dangerous now.
The Jag is of course more then 1/18th of the DBS. It was 1/4th or even less new. The thing is, that the Jag is so much older and so much more abused, that it is way cheaper. What would be a fair comparison: Try a 440i vs a DB11 (both used). The 440i is half the engine, same gearbox, some generation of infotainment and both now and new its 1/3 of the price but its 75% the car - atleast if it got the individual interior with the fancy leather dashboard. I've driven both and they get quite close. The Jag might also get close but the feeling is totally different. I'd rather compare the Jag to an S-Class Coupe, less sporty but more raw, less refined materials and design on both compared to the DB11/440i pairing. Of course you don't always need the expensive car to have more fun. If the MX5 had a little more engine and a little more sound, I guess you could have more fun in a 35.000€ car then you would have in a 250.000€ car - if Mazda would provide a flying Miata from factory, I would take this over a lot of the fancy sports cars.
I love these cars and agree about the looks. I have entered the raffle! Does anyone know if there's an after market solution to modernise the infotainment system and add Android Auto?
Try Alfa GT 3.2, its a dramatic sports coupe and if retrofitted with limited slip dif handles very well. Its practicality is outstanding. I am 189cm and can sit behind me to the back. Its lift back boot isn't the biggest but has a regular shape, so it can accommodate big stroller and folding bet for a child + some other stuff for an extended weekend trip
Asa a Dad of two teenagers I’d be interested to see whilst your kids grow how the sportyness of your cars goes down. Give it 10 years and you’ll be driving a 1.3 Honda Jazz with carbon brakes and a cherry bomb.😂
I don't really care for the new MSRP when considering the car's intrinsic value. Manufacturer, technicians, engineers, management, sales, etc. all inflate and milk the price high.
Yes they look great, but let's be honest, you can hardly give these big V8's away any more due to road tax and general running costs. There are loads of mint looking XKRs on Autotrader which have been there for months. You can almost feel the desperation of some owners as they slash another few thousand off in a bid to sell. Or simply SORN them and hope for some kind of pick up. I honestly can't see that happening.
@@dadcars technically anything is an upgrade practicality over my NC2 mx5 🤔🤭 spending most my time talking myself into the idea that I could run a 4200gt.. again your fault entirely 😄
Hi, You can improve the look and use of you 15 years old infotainment system with a tesla style screen. It's easy to install and you can add , quite easily, a rear camera at same time. i did it on my 2009 xkr and it's an incredible improvement . It also improve the sound quality in an unimaginable way. You should really install one. Chears.
Honestly I had a xf v8 premium and it was hands down as good a car I have ever owned eneded up selling and sticking with Jag and getting a Xe Rsport and it is as good had far far far more issues with my gti golf's and Audi s3 quattro that ever did with the jags
A lot of car for the money - about the price of a fairly average Fiesta! From what I've read the 4.2 V8 was one of Jaguar's most reliable engines so its off to a good start and if you can do some of the basic servicing yourself I think it might not be break the bank to run although a contingency fund of some sort would probably be wise. Just the looks and sound of an XK would be enough to forgive it some of its irritations!

Told you it was awesome.. for the price I just don't think they can be beaten.
Yep! Overlooked gems for sure 👌
I had a c63 for a year and.loved it , 6.2 v8 goodness,
Used it everyday but then went back to a trusty vw transporter,
Now in the market again for some fun , having already done it i find it hard to justify 20 to 30 thousand pounds again ,
Jag xkr 5.0 is a bargain.
Yep I’m hoping to get a 5L XKR on for review soon! I’ve done loads of amazing DadCars for that budget 🤙
@@dadcars look forward to it , great video as always
Keep up the good work 👍👍
Best wishes from not so sunny stanwick Northamptonshire 😄
Being able to comfortably afford a car could make it more enjoyable overall than one you are stretching yourself for 🙌
I’ve had an M2 for a while.
The S5 was the precious competition car I picked! And we have reviewed two evoras :) check them out 🙌
@@dadcars Yeah I realized that, well done 👍. I'm a huge Lotus fan as well, so no wonder I like your channel so much. i8 and Conti GT coming soon? Cheers
The biggest downside of Jaguar ownership is rubbish and expensive support from so called specialists
Who don’t love a Jag!!! Nice car and great video Ben!!! Love what your doing!!! 🎉
😚🙌
🙌😊
Have you ever thought of mid 00s Mustangs or Camaros if you are looking at the budget end?
I’d love to give them a try :)
On one hand, bang for buck is exceptional, but on the other, I don't feel as much bang as others. So what really is it?
I love these cars and agree about the looks. I have entered the raffle! Does anyone know if there's an after market solution to modernise the infotainment system and add Android Auto?
🙌😊
I am enjoying this video! But sadly the raffle won't allow me to buy tickets. It doesn't recognize my Powhatan Virginia USA zip code 😢
Sorry about that 😅
The lovely jaaaaag xk. Looking forward to an xj supersport review!
Sub 10k stationwagon tips? (Or sub 20k euro in The Netherlands haha)
Loads of amazing German estates for that money 🤙 I really enjoyed the is300 sportcross I reviewed
Replace the out of date touch screen with Jagdroid.
And a 4.2 XKR with a modified supercharger 👏
Is that XK ULEZ compliant?
Yes they look great, but let's be honest, you can hardly give these big V8's away any more due to road tax and general running costs. There are loads of mint looking XKRs on Autotrader which have been there for months. You can almost feel the desperation of some owners as they slash another few thousand off in a bid to sell. Or simply SORN them and hope for some kind of pick up. I honestly can't see that happening.
What's your Jaguar XK supercharged Vs Maserati gran turismo ,don't mean performance. More the drive ,sound they are around the same price
I’ve not driven an XKR yet! Hoping to soon 👌
Every time I see a video pop up on the x150 xk I hope someone has miraculously found a way to make the rear practical for kids, damnit. So close!
It’s always going to be a compromise 🥲 but I had two glorious years with my 3 little ones in the DB9 🤙
@@dadcars technically anything is an upgrade practicality over my NC2 mx5 🤔🤭 spending most my time talking myself into the idea that I could run a 4200gt.. again your fault entirely 😄
Hi,
You can improve the look and use of you 15 years old infotainment system with a tesla style screen.
That’s interesting to hear 🤙
A lot of car for the money - about the price of a fairly average Fiesta! From what I've read the 4.2 V8 was one of Jaguar's most reliable engines so its off to a good start and if you can do some of the basic servicing yourself I think it might not be break the bank to run although a contingency fund of some sort would probably be wise. Just the looks and sound of an XK would be enough to forgive it some of its irritations!
I've given up on the idea .. they are money pits .. the speed traps guarantee it
Jag is ex jack number 27?
Yep! Check out the video I did a few weeks ago with him! 😊
love the channel, started my own and any tips you could give me would be great.
I don’t feel qualified to advise on a crypto channel 😅… I just committed to rain or shine one video a week and have never failed to do that.
Thanks!
Thank you Frank! 🙌😊
