Ben you capture the joy of Italian car ownership very well. The higher the highs, the lower the lows. To paraphrase one great car journalist, a Maserati, or an Italian car in general, despite often getting a rating of 3/5 stars, is rarely so mundane as other 3/5 cars. It's very likely sometimes 1/5 and other times 5/5 stars. And to quote another, "a Maserati is like owning a two year old child. It's really annoying a lot of the time, but if someone tried to take them away from you, you'd kill them." I hope the trade down series not only helps you build your channel more, but also provides car dads with great info about how to get a fun car without breaking the bank.
Yep I agree you either fall in love with them or you don’t understand what the fuss is about… I believe nothing in life worth experiencing is easy, so Italian cars are perfect for me 🙌😎
Mate I really like the trading down series concept - many people can relate to that in life especially those with families -really well done pal, its a very subtle trade to be fair in so many ways - I once went new car to a 15 year old 1.0 corsa to free up cash for a house purchase - Keep up the content bro x
Wow! Thank you so much 🙌🥹… yeah the way I’m looking at it is I’m very fortunate to have the option of selling the Aston and taking the big gamble of working on the channel full time using that capital to fund it! If I end up in a 1.0L Coras but I know I gave this channel my all then I’ll be happy 🥰
Sounds like it’s worth investigating. My 2 tonne QP has the same engine with the ZF gearbox and can get 31 on a run, but usually mid-20s and then teens around town
I came up to see the Maserati ( love the sound ), but your girls made my day. My daughters are now 15 and 17 and I love them dearly, but to see your daughters brought up so many good memories...
Back two decades ago, the Gransport was the first sports car of its kind (straight out of the dealer showroom) that would have an astounding startup exhaust bark together with an exceeding raucous exhaust note at low revs. In the years to follow other exotic sports car manufacturers would adopt the same features and would eventually become ubiquitous with all of them.
Love the two commentary from the rear seat. Priceless!! They're the best feature when you drone, l always look at how uninterested they are yet rise to the occasional question. Brilliance.
Re. Sticky rubber button. Hand sanitizer is great for cleaning them up. It takes a bit of effort because it effectively removes the rubber coating from the plastic but it does work.
I try and say this on every owners video - for sticky buttons, just get some microfibre cloths and rub dry! You will eventually (lot of work) rub away only the sticky layer and leave the perfect plastic behind. The only things it doesn't work on are seat backs (white underneath, no go unless you paint them after) and door lock tabs (the little red stripe is painted as part of the sticky coating and will be lifted off, but you can just paint a little red stripe on after or use a sticker). Other than the above, i've found this solution works BEAUTIFULLY and transforms the whole interior without any expense. But beware, it's hard work - plan for 15-30 minutes for EACH BUTTON! Larger surfaces can take hours. The result is perfect finish with clean plastic, button indicators and features all retained and an interior that looks new!
You have made me love my Aston even More! I get 30 mpg in the V8 I wonder if people notice you like they do in the Aston? Finally those plastic buttons would send me over the edge, my 17 year old focus doesn’t do that But great video and nice to see what you think Kev
I’ve been surprised at how much attention it gets. To my eyes the Aston is the better looking car but these are so rare, I don’t think many people know what it is 😅
@kevinlong6482 if petrol price is day robbery u go on the bus is really that simple.Or drive one litre Daihatsu and never complain.Big engines have a price to pay to play.
Nice one Ben. I really love how your daughters interact with you, getting them used to the new surroundings and such. Yeah, you need to watch the fuel consumption on those as they drink like a fish! Anyways, carry on the good work!
What a great video and a brilliant concept, love it! This takes me right back to my daughter sat in the back of my geriatric Ford Ranger making similarly insightful and helpful comments through some interesting conversations. Subscribed. Well done!
Hi Ben & girls. Hope your doing good. That's one cool video. The Maserati looks so small outside, but it's big inside I think. A lot of room in the back. I love the color of it too.
Great review generally and from the “Dadcar” perspective. I really enjoyed hearing your daughter’s views on the backseat. It reminds me of my own daughter’s views, which mean that the cars I love driving are not necessarily the ones in which she wants to be a passenger! Is the troublesome gearbox something your little ones have noticed too, or does it only impact the driving experience? For what it is worth, I would really like to see the comparison with the GranTurismo, which has always struck me as a superb “Dadcar” due to its backseat and dynamics.
Thanks William! It’s what this channel is all about 👌😎 my daughters haven’t noted the gearbox yet but they are rather used to going in all sorts of crazy performance cars 😅
It's really nice how you involve yours kids in the videos. I was a teacher briefly for two years but then escaped back into my 'old' career - they were horrible! It looks like you got lucky to have two patient, polite kids.
I had a 4200 Spyder and my advice on the gearbox is to accept that it is a manual. It might have an automatic mode, but it is a manual - it just doesn't have a clutch pedal and you change gears with the padals. This way it leaves you in control and takes the frustration away (and will make the clutch last longer - they need changing every 30,000 miles as it is!)
One has to ask just one question here, and that question is coming from a man who once had the finest super cars ever made (Lamborghini Ferrari and the mighty SL 600) etc.. … The question : “ Are they really necessary at this time of total confusion on the Economies”, The Roads ( full of holes ) speed cameras , crazy speed limits etc etc ? Such cars will be wrecked via their delicate suspension systems (Very fragile) once they have driven along crazy unkept road systems ! My Ferrari had to have new front bushes and suspension parts at 27,000 miles, when I asked why such a prestigious car suspension lasted such a short life The answer was “” THE ROADS SIR “”. The cars are not supposed to be hitting potholes every day sir ! This also fits the argument With my MX5 A Destroyed front assembly after hitting a pothole,
@@barryhill1044necessary? Certainly not. My girlfriends i30 is all you need. Desirable for the driving feel? Absolutely! At this time with bad roads? Well, when else? We don't live forever :( Sadly if you don't enjoy it now, you'll have only soulless quiet electric cars to enjoy in time
Sticky plastic easy clean with nail varnish remover or my preference is Bluecol de icer. Spray on agitate with tooth brush, wipe off with kitchen towel. I’ve used this on all plastic, torches, dashboard switches and controls. I never soak switches but a little at a time.
Oh and I'm a dad of two who has both daily driven a 2017 Mustang GT for 4 years and currently a Rover Mini Cooper Sport. Did/do the school run all the time in both so I really align with your channel. Based in Horsham, Sussex if you ever want to get in touch
Great vid. In 2006 I bought a 4200 then in 2010 changed it for a brand new GranTurismo S. The GranTurismo had the same engine increased to 4.7lt, a phenomenal noise and built like a BMW but the size of a tank. So what did I do - I got rid of it a couple of years later and re bought a 4200 but a Spyder this time. Why, because the joy of the 4200 is the engine which looks and sounds great. It’s why you buy these cars. My wife said it was/is the best car we’ve ever had because you are connected to the engine, you feel it. It’s the only car I’ve had that she loves driving. The gearbox is awful in slow moving traffic but open it up, put it into Sport and change gear over 4,000 revs and it feels fabulous. This feeling meant I had to have it again. (In 2006 we managed to get our three young children in with a complicated arrangement with the seat belts!). Otherwise you’re right on quality, fuel consumption & gearbox. I’ve just had all the sticky plastics redone and they look great and won’t get sticky again. Surprisingly reliability hasn’t really been an issue and, of course, they are rare which is part of the fun. If you want something fast, built well and economical…buy something else. But if you want to fun and emotion, have a look at one of these. Go for a post 2005 model as by then Ferrari in the new model year they had sorted out quality, panel fit, software (and stiffening on the Spyder). These upgrades & quality improvements (but not the packaging or exhaust noise) were incorporated into the normal 4200 models.
I really like the concept of your channel! I'm getting older and hopefully having a fun practical car it's going to become my reality and your channel might help with choosing one!
I always check for practicality in my reviews so hopefully that makes them more informative when it comes to the often overlooked aspect of exciting cars 😊
I think the "sticky plastic" issue is more to do with the substances they used at the time. I had a 2008 Boxster, it was about 6 months away from nastiness on the radio controls etc. when I sold it.
Vws of the time were the same the mk5 golf and b6 passats were renowned for this too. This also means Porsches audis lamborghinis of the same vintage are also the same
I have a commemorative Breil watch celebrating the 2006 World Cup win and the plastic box is sticky. I was told in that time the plastics used had compound issues. Weird
So hyped that you chose this after watching your channel fr a while and your first real review in A 3200 and seeing how much you loved it i bet your gonna have so much fun in it
I own one of these cars and although I’ve had loads of other cars it took me ages to get to grips with the drive of the CC box. You are always finessing the shift. I would advise as per the owners forums, never using the box in anything other than sport (definitely not auto) as otherwise you will burn out the clutch in short order. You can clean the sticky plastics with isopropyl alcohol and lots of patience too.
Hi Ben, loving this trading down approach. I also like your honesty towards the Maser which I’ve always liked but was always afraid of, due to potential bills etc. I’ve always stuck to the reliable cars like the Lexus ISF and now a GR Yaris. I’ve got a 3 and 1 year old boy but still haven’t had them in the back. You inspire me to involve them more so thank you.
Not at all relevant to the video, but I LOVE how engaged your eldest is with the channel. It’s awesome to see her enjoying it with you. And yet again pickle fast asleep. Definitely a DadCars video. The other thing, if my memory is right, is that Maserati was a bit… lost in the early 00’s; the company didn’t have much money and didn’t really know what it’s identity was, whereas the Vanquish and DB9 were Aston’s come back album; they’d rediscovered their mojo and so could hone the model and so the quality and feel differences is understandable.
Thanks 😊 I love seeing people are enjoying these videos… you’re right the VH platform Astons we’re hugely successful for AM and even today it’s easy to see why.
I traded down once for a house, was a bit of a shock. Went from a Seat Leon 20vt Cupra on a 51reg when it was new to a 206gti. Which was a total shock. Build quality was shocking. Door was effectively ripped off in a petrol station from the wind. Took me years to trade back up. I’m now trying to do the same. Trade down to get a modern classic instead. Market is slow in selling cars at the moment
That’s the top of the hill road! I caught the glimpse of the harbour and thought “damn I live there” Two great cars and an excellent review - I hope you’re giving the kids royalty payments 👍🏻👍🏻 (And 4:20 that’s the back of The Churchillian….. made my day)
I’ve never driven an AM but my daily driver is a 2007 Maserati Quadroporte I’ve had for ten years and driven 60000 miles. MPG is 22 around town and 30 on a motorway run - mind you it’s the ZF auto box which is brilliant. Spares are expensive - front discs and pads £1500, but get it serviced by a good independent and it’s not expensive to run. It handles beautifully, though a tad ‘firm’ on shitty potholed urban roads. The sticky switches is definitely a thing but there is a place that will refurb them. It’s now at 103000 and it’s a definite keeper. Highly recommend.
Nice one Ben, had a Gransport for 8 years now, faultless great car with all of the benefits you mention. I often slip into neutral to make drive smoother and anticipate lights , coast, blip throttle and catch back into gear and then just move on. Alternatively stop and engage 1st. in sport always ease off throttle as you change up slightly. Great car awesome package - well done. Maserati is the thinking mans Ferrari.
I’m really glad a longterm GS owner enjoyed the video 🤙 I genuinely love this car and it’s surprising me how much I’m enjoying driving it around daily 😅
I was about to comment the same thing and from my 5 year experience with a 4200 Cambiocorsa: be always in sport manual and use the box as if it was a stick-shift. Then it will be fine.
@@karacop78 same here with 10 years ownership on a 4200. Never use auto and keep in mind this is actually a manual box, with a normal clutch, only actuated differently. Use the same precautions for clutch use, e.g. don’t let it slip as if it was an automatic, you’ll kill it pretty quickly. I personally keep out of sport mode in normal driving, it feels smoother also on the skyhook suspension side. Wishing you a lot of driving pleasure
I’ve had mine since 2007….you should always shift above 4,000 RPMs in sport mode as the car will shift faster and save clutch life…do not lift off throttle…keep it to the floor when shifting.
5 year GS owner here: 1) sticky buttons are fixed by taking a microfibre cloth and rubbing dry. Works wonders and won't wear anything away. Don't do it on seat backs or lock plastic indicators 2) get a formula dynamics DBW to really improve that gearbox speed at low revs. If you already have one installed, it might have had too aggressive a setting used - formula dynamics can change the aggressiveness of the setting to something you like more, so don't dismiss it right away! 3)I looked at Aston's before I got mine but sorry, the interior is very very bland on the Aston. It's like saying a Toyota has high quality interiors that last - sure, but they're plastic and bland. That Aston's interior was black, plain with design elements and curves that clashed and didn't gel nearly as well as the GS. In fact, the interior is a big reason why I got a GS and never wanted to "upgrade" (apart from weight and not being a sports car) to a granturismo. The same with the weight and feel of an aston. It's simply not a sports car. The GS is a sports tourer far more than a grand tourer, close to a sports car like an f430 (mechanic gave me a ride in one and it felt very similar to the GS in character, though quicker) while retaining 4 seats and some extra usability and "low key" ability to not stand out everywhere. Aston's don't really drive like sports cars Now some might think that's a knock on Aston's but here's the thing - most people think they want a sports car, but actually want a luxury car or grand tourer. The GS is raw, noisy, tramlines, moves about in your hands and has a hard crash suspension at times. It's not very smooth and likes to be driven hard and makes it known how it hates going slow in traffic. Most people are going to like a smooth fast luxury car far better, which is where an Aston shines
Your daughters are so adorable! You're very lucky. I'd probably choose a Quattroporte over a GrandSport for a family car, but any Masarati has me fearing a breakdown and massive repair bill at any moment.
And i thought my Granturismo was high miles at 125,000. You’re quite brave ! Sticky buttons - lemon juice (from the fruit not bottle) and soft plastic trim tool. It can be a bit messy but produces decent results with effort. Done lots of cars that way
I ran a 4200 for a couple of years 25000 per annum. The mpg is about what you say, lucky to get 20 on motorway! But the f1 gearbox is something you'll need to adapt to. I used it most of the time in manual mode then you can feather the gas in sync with the gear change. With a few days practice it's pretty smooth even in town. I have a Gran Turismo now and even though it's better, miss the personality of the 4200.
Original review, with solid comparions. Some hard revelations ie: Maserati’s fuel, the cold start, jerkiness around town, goes like shit of a chrome shovel!
Absolutely agreed, I had the 2006 Aston M Vantage before, honestly the interior felt very premium and well put together, felt like a time piece. I was surprised, loved that car
Saw your Maserati from Aston Martin trade down video...found it most interesting and informative. I am in the US and am interested in getting a better idea of affordable British and Italian sports cars that can be driven on a daily basis. Keep up the good work...very enjoyable...
I was really close to buying a Gransport last year. I'd wanted one since they were new and finally had the budget (plus a bit spare for maintenance). The factors that resulted in me not pulling the trigger were;: Most of my driving is on East Anglia B-roads which is not ideal for such a heavy GT. I really wanted to go back to a manual gearbox which the Gransport didn't have (and I didn't want a non-GS 4200 manual). Running costs (high insurance group, fuel, road tax). Potential maintenance costs. Previous experience with multiple 1990s Lancias and the "specialist" garages that I'd used has made me very cautious about running an ageing Italian car as a daily driver. I ended up going for something newer, smaller, lighter and more nimble for the kind of roads that I'd be travelling on. Watching this, especially the observations on the gearbox, I think made the right decision.
It’s a heart purchase for sure… but incredibly charming! I did a video comparing it back to back with a granturismo straight after getting the drive by wire mod off
Glad the car swap has worked out for you and thumbs up for Jayemm for providing helping hand. Yes, the Aston is the better car at twice the price but it's not double the car. The gran sport is a bit of an oddball (I think a lot of masers are) but no one can deny it's special. That engine just sounds insane.
@@dadcars don’t mention it Ben! Happy to send some love (and treats?) to you and the lovely family! Content like this helps keep the car community alive and kicking even after becoming dads!!
Owner of a 2006 Gran Sport here over 5 years now. I'm in the states. I wish I could have found the blue, I gave up and went with my second choice, red with full black leather interior. Couple notes about it. It's meant to be driven as a manual, because it truly is a manual. I never drive it in auto mode. The DBW module does help, in manual mode you want it anyway. I have the DBW shift module and the ECU. I'd keep the module, just avoid auto mode and you'll be happy. Those carbon fiber paddle shifts are nice, but unfortunately it's not offered in stock form. Best thing about the car is the Italian leather and the glorious v8 engine red lining at 7500. Good review, honestly, I really didn't consider gas mileage when I bought it, my goal is it would be a weekend car eventually. I had it as a daily for about 2 yrs, but the last 3 years I've only put about 3500 miles on it. Great car, love mine.
I owned that Maserati for over 5 years, sold it with 99k miles in 2018, was in need of a good bit of tlc when I purchased it, spent a fortune and was spot on when I let it go, never let me down once 😊
Keep up the great content and yes, please do a comparison of the Gransport vs Granturismo! Exactly what I was thinking when watching, esp in terms of kids practicality (and of course fun factor).
Nice channel, I like the concept and will subscribe I owned a 2006 grandsport and your comments are true - the engine is a high rev, lowish torque motor that needs to be worked hard to move its 1695kgs - so the fuel economy suffers It’s flaws are obvious but so are it’s charms- always liked driving it
Love your videos and the Trading Down Series. I am currently looking at a Blue Grasnport as well. Thanks for the insight into the GS and help enabling me to buy ;)
It’s great to see the GS finally getting some love! I’ve owned mine now for a little over 3 years and 30,000km. It has been fantastic during that time and surprisingly much cheaper to run than my x308 XJR. I’d love to see a video comparing the GS to a 360. Seeing whether the extra money can be justified would be awesome. As far as I’m concerned, the GS can’t be beat for smiles per dollar.
French, British and Italian sports GT cars are full of character, but each in its own way. I've driven a lot of Italian cars and my conclusion is that the only thing that matters to Italians is the specific feeling of driving (on their narrow and winding roads), the rest is there, just that... 🇮🇹🚗💨💨💨🇮🇹
Check the contact strip on the throttle pedal- the contact strip is wears out and changes the throttle from linear to binary, expensive part to replace but there are people who can repair the contact for you to a better standard than factory
Yeah it’s really exciting having something new to drive each day and film content with! 🙌 and if it all goes wrong at least I’ll be able to share the financial pain with everyone 😅
Love your videos - I had one of these 12 years ago and loved its foibles, however I didn’t daily it. As you suspected most of the switchgear is from a Fiat parts bin. The vents are from a Barchetta and are significantly cheaper than Maserati. Mine liked clutches which can be expensive, so hopefully yours won’t be as bad and 10pm around town is what I used to get unfortunately. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did…
Just subbed. Very cool channel. But the best thing about that car is the sound and the itallian body design. But the engine and exhaust are glorious for any price. But at that price nothing comes close once depreciation hits a Maserati
So much quality time with my little pickles in exciting cars! They are getting a good sense of things! Its good getting to hear from those who these rear seats were made for :)
I nearly bought a 4200 a few years ago, might again, and this very honest video hasn’t put me off! You’ve got a very natural/engaging presentation style, great work. You should definitely do the comparison video against your mate’s Maser and it would be cool to do a comparison against a similar-aged Ferrari with the similar engine, just to see if there is that big a chasm between them (apart from on price).
Trading down series & channel name brilliance.. Subscribed. I already look forward to hearing your thoughts once this car has gone. Will the heart have grown event fonder!
Hey Ben, when I owned a Mk5 GTi, i HATED the sticky buttons by the gear stick. I removed them and used T-Cut to then remove the gooey surface. The result after replacing them was outstanding! Never owned an Italian car but maybe you could improve your car similarly? Cheers!
@@dadcars Noticed it's on your vents too. Maybe a mild solvent like a wax polish so it doesn't wear the plastic too smooth and shiny. Then your buttons and vents should be just like on the DadB9. 😉
@@dadcars Most of the general black plastic trim pieces that are sticky, vents, handle backs, glovebox handle, etc, clean up ok with alcohol or even better oven cleaner or log burner cleaner! But be careful with the buttons, they are white plastic under that sticky black coating. Ideally you need them refinishing professionally, I used an company in the Czech republic. Very good but not cheap.
I had a 2007 GS between 2011 and 2015, brilliant car and I looked well after it. Beside a F1 clutch service capped at 1500 GBP and the annual services at 600GBP and every second year at 1000 GBP no faults. Sold it 38kmiles. Fuel consumption was indeed 10mpg in heavy London winter traffic but up 22-23mpg on a legal motorway drives esp.through France. Took it the track twice, the mpg went to single digits and tbh it is not really built for track usage.
Great idea about the downgrading. All others only do upgrading tp more and more expensive. Talented stuff and hope all the best for you! Cheers from Denmark!
@@dadcars which is what makes it real and not just an excercise! You can also tell your interest and excitement from your storytelling! I own a late Rapide S and which is why I found you - but I`ll stick around because you`re a good storyteller!
@@sysdir thanks man! The rapide is one hell of a cool DadCar… I’m just loving this whole crazy journey the channel is taking me on. It’s a dream getting to experience all these cars I dreamt of and best of all I’m making memories with my little ones 🥰
Great review. I really appreciate seeing you with your girls having fun driving. I remember when my kids were little and would say put the power down. Very fun time! Enjoy it while it last! Do you wish you got a 5th gen qp?
I wanted a QP GTS but that’s a tough task for sub 20k. I explain why this came together in the “my new DadCar” video but I’m very happy to have this. It’s tremendous fun 😅
I’m here for the Maserati. I’m also a dad but on the other side of kids growing up (my son has flown the nest and making his way in the world), so I’m on the lookout for something special I can use as a daily driver on an 82 mile round trip commute.
From the ashes into the fire! ;) Love the interior in the Astons, the Maseratis is not as impressive... Maserati body design is nice though, my favorite is the GranTurismo! And the V8:s sounds gorgeous too!
That little thumbs up creeping onto the screen made me smile. I did fancy a Trident but I think a 3l diesel chipped Jag Portfolio EF is a more sensible target. I think the Maserati could be like my old stag...a money pit.
I think the automated manual in your Maserati is the same or similar Graziano unit as fitted to the VH Vantage - obviously with different calibrations to suit the two companies' requirements. If you look at the advice on any Aston forum the consensus is never to drive these things in "auto" - they're dreadful. Always drive it in manual on the paddles, lift off slightly on the upshifts and you can make it as smooth as silk - assuming the Masser calibration allows. It also makes it more engaging to drive, as you have to make a bit of an effort to get it just right, but it's satisfying when you do.. It'll never be like a torque-converter auto, so don't try to drive it like one. I'll be interested in your long-term reviews.
Another quality video from our favourite dad. I had to do a similar thing, but with more boring cars, and less money. As my 2 kids got too tall for the back of a golf r wagon, so upsized to the Arteon. Im 6'3 the kids are approaching high end of the fives Hopefully, you're still creating content when you have 4, 5'7+ teenagers. Be interested to see what your options are then 😊
Every journey is a compromise when you daily a sports/super sports car. I daily'd a 997s in period and the weight of the clutch used to annoy me in heavy city centre traffic. After 3 months I purchased a 2nd town runabout, a Panda!!!
@@dadcars at the time (2010) it was almost as cheap as walking. The radio stopped operating once, it took 3 days for me to realise the aerial got nicked!, off a Fiat, like! Both cars long gone now. Panda easier to sell then the Porsche, back in recession hit Ireland in 2012.
Well I did warn you. The terrible fuel consumption is a well known issue, There's a wheeler dealer episode where its a £2k fix for a new unit ( that starts wearing out as soon as you use it) or a fix from a bloke in a shed up north somewhere who they used. Looking forward to the next episode.
Yeah not everyone is going to like each trade down choice but that’s what makes it fun! Plus it’s just financial mindset training for when eventually… one day… maybe… I get my first Ferrari 🙌😎
Hi Ben 😂 you named a waste majority of bad points that pushed me from Gransport to Granturismo S MCshift. And the door the doors ...when i first opened the Gransport and got the feeling of 80's with a flimsy handle, the window was unsurely faling down to release the door and the beer can sound when closed. Oh gosh, it was rubish compared to same year Alfa Gt. So it did not make double the price increase compared to my Alfa. Actually, except it was rare to see Maserati. There was no + point to buy for me. But you have to experience Italy to start love them 😀
@dadcars clear and looking forward to your further thoughts 😉 I did it, vice versa. I went from 7k italian car to 30k car, and I skipped Gransport 🙃. But I still own the 7k one.
The sticky button is not something typical Italian. Several car brands (incl. Mercedes and BMW) are affected by this because only time could tell that a certain material will become sticky. Talking about Mercedes, even their top notch vehicles SL, CL and S class have this issue.
Bunch of bits and bobs in there look similiar or identical to some trim inside my Alfa 156 and 166. It was a bit of a shock getting those two after having a few E39 5 series. German and Italian cars are great, can't speak to English ones yet.
I understand what you are saying, Having owned the Maserati shamal and 3 different Ferrari cars 328/ 355/ and 575. This car is my keeper, i will never sell it. People just don't understand that its old school. You most certainly have to warm the engine before driving it at all, the car is a beautiful beast and the funny thing is that it becomes clearly more exotica as each year goes by. beautiful engineering as well. Maserati gave clients instructions as t the factory on how to use the f1 gear box which should always be on sport and never automatic. My friend had the DB 9 , it was like a tank compared to this car.
It’s going in to sports Italia to get sorted very soon. Honestly it’s just not right how it’s set up currently. But I wanted to make the trade before it was ready… I’ve got some more cool videos planned with it 😊
Well done mate, really love this series and your other reviews. I have a suggestion for another topic or even series…… what’s the best “dad car” track day weapon. A weekend toy with for 4 usable seats and the ability to smash it around a track (that’s not a Porsche or BMW 😂). Im on this quest at the moment! 🙈 Alfa giulia quadrifoglio is currently at the top of my list
It’s an experience, was a 4200cc owner, check front wishbones for very slight hairline cracks. Maserati owners club was a good place for all info. Enjoy.
I went the other way from Maserati to Aston Martin and like yourself I don't regret the transition. There are pro's and con's to both cars but for me the Aston is far better and I don't regret the move. However, I am now in my sixties and don't drive around in the spirited manner that I used to.
James has also done a comparison video, however I’m not convinced these are true competitors. The Maserati was positioned to go up against the Vantage - similar size engine, essentially the same robotised gearbox, similar price, whereas the DB9 is in the next segment up, where there is no Maserati option as it would have tread on the toes of Ferrari…
That’s an interesting point!… from my point of view though the maserati is undeniably superior to the vantage and DB9 when it comes to family practicality 🙌 very unique having a car like this with 4 proper seats
@@dadcars I had my heart set on a Vantage, but the interior just felt too cramped, and all the tales of DB9s ingesting their cats has scared me off those. I went to look at the Granturismo and size/comfortwise they tick all the boxes for me, it’s just the whole Italian car reliability thing that’s holding me back. That said, every sub-£35k 911 appears to either have needed a £10k engine rebuild or is only one scored liner away from doing so…
@@OddsAndSodsGarage that’s awesome! Thanks man! It’s so cool seeing people comment “you’ll get the FF one day!” Feels completely impossible where I am today but if enough people like you find the channel it might just happen!
Had a camaro 6.2 2014 with 1 child, had another littlw one so sold and bought a panamera gts 2014 for the back doors and noise and wish id had your idea about doing a dad cars set of videos. Good luck with the channel. Great idea and your daughters seem delightful. Poor form from you with regards to the ice cream 😉
For any car with ‚drive issues‘, the love for the car starts dwindling - get the box serviced, even if just an oil change and fix anything else that bugs you constantly. It will also make it a better sell.
Thanks Ben for another great video, love your girls, so precious! I think a comparison video with a GranTurismo S 4.7 would be great! I also would be interested in a comparison of the GranSport 6 speed manual (if you can find one) that would be very interesting indeed. AND... if you ever make it to California... you can use one of my Maseratis if you like! My offer still stands for as long as I live here. Cheers mate! Well done.
Maseratis are mostly about the engine. I park my 20yr old 4200 (a £13k or so 'warts n all') outside the golf club where I work and it always attracts attention, despite being worth less than half the cars in the car park
Hi. Thanks for the video. I really appreciate people who can be honest and show us all the bad parts of Italian cars, things I've complaining about since the 1980s, and the fact that the beautiful style and driving emotions allowed of the Italian cars are offset by the awful quality of the interior plastics and assembly, really has always pissed me off. A suggestion: learn how to handle the steering wheel properly. Your position is not safe, it does not allow you to really control the car
The 00's temp BMW 3 series I once had as a company car, also had the sticky plastic. So, it's not merely an Italian car thing. It was more a thing of the era: soft touch thermoplastics that did not decay nicely.
I think the porsche panamera could be a good car to trade down into although the rear seats may be a challenge, but a cayenne could be an alternative. Keep up the amazing content
2011 V8 Panamera owner here. It's brilliant. Solid quality, drives like a dream (except in multi storey car parks obviously), sounds great with the sports exhaust, looks like a Porsche, ugly rear end has aged well imho and is not so ugly anymore. Boot is big, has isofox. What more would you want?! Can throw up an expensive service bill occasionally but that seems to be the case for all "dad cars".
Yes but you will have to sacrifice style and good looks to drive those, especially the Cayenne. That's a bastard looking car that is essentially an overpriced VW Toureg
Yep I agree you either fall in love with them or you don’t understand what the fuss is about… I believe nothing in life worth experiencing is easy, so Italian cars are perfect for me 🙌😎
the italians have many wonderful cars..... today, maserati isn't one of them. there is a very good reason they depreciate to kia value quickly.
Me too, I think it's a good idea. Surprised to find that the Maserati is heavier on fuel than the Aston though.
@@Treviscoe I’m sure it’s down to how the car is set up with that throttle mod
Sounds like it’s worth investigating. My 2 tonne QP has the same engine with the ZF gearbox and can get 31 on a run, but usually mid-20s and then teens around town
@@JonWhitworth yep so this is 300kg lighter! I’ll get it sorted :)
I came up to see the Maserati ( love the sound ), but your girls made my day. My daughters are now 15 and 17 and I love them dearly, but to see your daughters brought up so many good memories...
Awesome! That’s what it’s all about 🥹 I took the 3 eldest out today in it for an icecream at the same spot 😅
Brilliance.
I can drone worse than the exhaust in sport mode on the motorway 🥲
Re. Sticky rubber button. Hand sanitizer is great for cleaning them up. It takes a bit of effort because it effectively removes the rubber coating from the plastic but it does work.
Cool, yes I think I’ll have a go at sorting the sticky plastics 😊
@@dadcars Good luck. Maybe make a video of it to spread the word. All those owners of classic Italian cars will thank you 😉
I try and say this on every owners video - for sticky buttons, just get some microfibre cloths and rub dry!
I’ll have a go at fixing the sticky plastics 🤙 maybe make a video
Maybe I should haha! It's a great solution, I'm not a video guy but I might have a go at it
It's been 4 years since I fixed the sticky buttons this way so it definitely works
You have made me love my Aston even
More!
I get 30 mpg in the V8
I wonder if people notice you like they do in the Aston?
Finally those plastic buttons would send me over the edge, my 17 year old focus doesn’t do that
But great video and nice to see what you think
Kev
I’ve been surprised at how much attention it gets. To my eyes the Aston is the better looking car but these are so rare, I don’t think many people know what it is 😅

Glad you found the channel 🙌 thanks for the kind words 😊
Agreed - the junior (although rather grow-up) perspective from the back seat is a nice touch, well worth a subscribe
It's really nice how you involve yours kids in the videos. I was a teacher briefly for two years but then escaped back into my 'old' career - they were horrible! It looks like you got lucky to have two patient, polite kids.
They are wonderful 🥹
I had a 4200 Spyder and my advice on the gearbox is to accept that it is a manual. It might have an automatic mode, but it is a manual - it just doesn't have a clutch pedal and you change gears with the padals. This way it leaves you in control and takes the frustration away (and will make the clutch last longer - they need changing every 30,000 miles as it is!)
Holy shit thats terrible. Ive got an m3 with a dct and its solid as a tank
@@BPF80MCar-vi1pgwhat's terrible is a boring m3
One has to ask just one question here, and that question is coming from a man who once had the finest super cars ever made (Lamborghini Ferrari and the mighty SL 600) etc.. …
The question :
“ Are they really necessary at this time of total confusion on the Economies”, The Roads ( full of holes ) speed cameras , crazy speed limits etc etc ?
Such cars will be wrecked via their delicate suspension systems (Very fragile) once they have driven along crazy unkept road systems !
My Ferrari had to have new front bushes and suspension parts at 27,000 miles, when I asked why such a prestigious car suspension lasted such a short life The answer was
“” THE ROADS SIR “”. The cars are not supposed to be hitting potholes every day sir !
This also fits the argument With my MX5 A Destroyed front assembly after hitting a pothole,
@@barryhill1044necessary? Certainly not. My girlfriends i30 is all you need.

Sticky plastic easy clean with nail varnish remover or my preference is Bluecol de icer. Spray on agitate with tooth brush, wipe off with kitchen towel. I’ve used this on all plastic, torches, dashboard switches and controls. I never soak switches but a little at a time.

Great comment 👌 How much did it cost you to sort the plastics?
spot on brother. . well put as an owner toooo
I really like the concept of your channel! I'm getting older and hopefully having a fun practical car it's going to become my reality and your channel might help with choosing one!

@@BPF80MCar-vi1pg awesome! I have reviewed a M3 comp, next trade down bracket is sub 15k though 😬
Weird
Exactly the comparison I was looking for - thanks, and cheers from Los Angeles!
So hyped that you chose this after watching your channel fr a while and your first real review in A 3200 and seeing how much you loved it i bet your gonna have so much fun in it
This is it!! Was such an important moment for me doing that first 3200 review then the 4.2 QP made me fall in love with this V8 🥰🙌
Loving this down trading series and looking forward to seeing what happens over the next few months with Masa ownership.
Yeah it’s nice getting to spend more time living with a daily driving these cars… allows me to make more in-depth ownership content 😊
That’s awesome 🥰 I LOVED the GR Yaris we reviewed! Fantastic DadCar
Yeah market is strange at the moment!
That’s the top of the hill road! I caught the glimpse of the harbour and thought “damn I live there”
Two great cars and an excellent review - I hope you’re giving the kids royalty payments 👍🏻👍🏻
(And 4:20 that’s the back of The Churchillian….. made my day)
I’ve never driven an AM but my daily driver is a 2007 Maserati Quadroporte I’ve had for ten years and driven 60000 miles.
Ive done a video with a QP on the channel with all 4 kids in the car 🙌😅 first time I drove a car with this engine
5 year GS owner here:
1) sticky buttons are fixed by taking a microfibre cloth and rubbing dry. Works wonders and won't wear anything away. Don't do it on seat backs or lock plastic indicators
2) get a formula dynamics DBW to really improve that gearbox speed at low revs.
Aston's don't really drive like sports cars
Now some might think that's a knock on Aston's but here's the thing - most people think they want a sports car, but actually want a luxury car or grand tourer.
It’s a brave pill for sure 😅
And i thought my Granturismo was high miles at 125,000. You’re quite brave ! Sticky buttons - lemon juice (from the fruit not bottle) and soft plastic trim tool. It can be a bit messy but produces decent results with effort. Done lots of cars that way
Wait until I show you the history file on this car!!! It’s had so much money spent on it 🙌 high mile hero for the win 🤙
Awesome! Are the prices different in the US?
I was really close to buying a Gransport last year. I'd wanted one since they were new and finally had the budget (plus a bit spare for maintenance).
The factors that resulted in me not pulling the trigger were;:
Most of my driving is on East Anglia B-roads which is not ideal for such a heavy GT.

🤙 thanks man, don’t see many in red that’s pretty cool. I’ve done a few videos on the GS now and more to come 🙌
I owned that Maserati for over 5 years, sold it with 99k miles in 2018, was in need of a good bit of tlc when I purchased it, spent a fortune and was spot on when I let it go, never let me down once 😊
Oh that’s awesome! 🙌 it’s in getting bits sorted now so fingers crossed it’ll be back running as it should soon 😊
Keep up the great content and yes, please do a comparison of the Gransport vs Granturismo! Exactly what I was thinking when watching, esp in terms of kids practicality (and of course fun factor).
Ok cool I’ll speak to Joe and try to set up a filming day 🤙
Nice channel, I like the concept and will subscribe
I owned a 2006 grandsport and your comments are true - the engine is a high rev, lowish torque motor that needs to be worked hard to move its 1695kgs - so the fuel economy suffers
It’s flaws are obvious but so are it’s charms- always liked driving it
Yeah you have to keep the revs high to get the best out of it but what an engine! 🙌
Love your videos and the Trading Down Series. I am currently looking at a Blue Grasnport as well. Thanks for the insight into the GS and help enabling me to buy ;)
I’ll make more videos when it’s back from sports Italia 👌
Nice review. Made extra special by the production assitant and her back seat commentary. 😄
🇮🇹🚗💨💨💨🇮🇹
The GS is strongest on the b roads for sure! It does carry a strong sense of flair generally though 🤌
Check the contact strip on the throttle pedal- the contact strip is wears out and changes the throttle from linear to binary, expensive part to replace but there are people who can repair the contact for you to a better standard than factory
Great video Ben. Looks like there is some fun stuff on the way.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did…
I am really enjoying it! I literally did an entire tank of fuel today 😅 sounded amazing going through the tunnels!

I’d love to try a 4200 manual as I’ve filmed a 3200 and now own the GS… thanks for the supportive words! This type of feedback means a lot 🙌😊

Hey Ben, when I owned a Mk5 GTi, i HATED the sticky buttons by the gear stick. I removed them and used T-Cut to then remove the gooey surface. The result after replacing them was outstanding! Never owned an Italian car but maybe you could improve your car similarly? Cheers!
Oh cool! Yeah I guess that make sense, get the rubbery coating off all together
Great stuff! All the best with your channel from the USA.🎉
🤙😎
Love the channel !! Just subscribed and I look forward to more videos. You represent most dads out there 😊
Glad you found us! Lots of exciting things to come and loads already on the channel to check out 🙌😊
Is that Portsdown Hill view point at the end of the vid? If not it looks very familiar. Subscribed, great channel.
Great idea about the downgrading. All others only do upgrading tp more and more expensive. Talented stuff and hope all the best for you! Cheers from Denmark!
Thanks man! I’m downgrading to pay for the channel while it grows 😊 but I’m excited about it
@@dadcars which is what makes it real and not just an excercise!
I did this but went straight to the sub 5k 130i. Absolute belter of a car. The best bit is you don’t care too much if the car gets a bit tatty.
Monday motivation to get you closer to the millionth view 🤟🏻
Wow this is amazing thank you so much!! 🥹🙌 I really appreciate it
Sure enough I did hit 1M long form views last week 🙌 thanks again for this 😊
@@dadcarsahah coincidence? Think not. I knew your channel was a winner since day one mate 💪🏻
I’m here for the Maserati. I’m also a dad but on the other side of kids growing up (my son has flown the nest and making his way in the world), so I’m on the lookout for something special I can use as a daily driver on an 82 mile round trip commute.
I’ve done loads of reviews on various options 🙌😊
From the ashes into the fire! ;) Love the interior in the Astons, the Maseratis is not as impressive... Maserati body design is nice though, my favorite is the GranTurismo! And the V8:s sounds gorgeous too!
Yeah if you’ve seen one of my gran Turismo reviews you’ll know just how much I love the looks 😎👌
That little thumbs up creeping onto the screen made me smile. I did fancy a Trident but I think a 3l diesel chipped Jag Portfolio EF is a more sensible target. I think the Maserati could be like my old stag...a money pit.
It’s a brave pill but nothing in life worth doing is easy 😅
Love the idea of this series! Great video as usual dude
Thanks man 🤙
I think the automated manual in your Maserati is the same or similar Graziano unit as fitted to the VH Vantage - obviously with different calibrations to suit the two companies' requirements.
Very entertaining and a great watch, subscribed!
Thanks! Glad you found us!
Another quality video from our favourite dad.
I had to do a similar thing, but with more boring cars, and less money. As my 2 kids got too tall for the back of a golf r wagon, so upsized to the Arteon.
Im 6'3 the kids are approaching high end of the fives
Hopefully, you're still creating content when you have 4, 5'7+ teenagers. Be interested to see what your options are then 😊
I keep telling my father in law he should buy an Arteon next! I think they are tremendously cool looking saloons 🙌
Every journey is a compromise when you daily a sports/super sports car. I daily'd a 997s in period and the weight of the clutch used to annoy me in heavy city centre traffic. After 3 months I purchased a 2nd town runabout, a Panda!!!
Is the panda fun?
But you have to experience Italy to start love them 😀
All things considered the Gran Turismo S has the edge… I will own one eventually! but pound for pound it’s closer than you’d think!
@dadcars clear and looking forward to your further thoughts 😉
I did it, vice versa. I went from 7k italian car to 30k car, and I skipped Gransport 🙃. But I still own the 7k one.
I like the concept of downtrading. Very much looking forward to see you start to go the other way.
That’s the dream! Feels a million miles away but fingers crossed if the channel keeps growing :)
Yeah I need to get a Giulia on the channel for sure!
@@dadcars well if I end up buying one, you’ll first dibs on a drive 👍🏻
@@stevemann6110 🙌😅
It’s an experience, was a 4200cc owner, check front wishbones for very slight hairline cracks. Maserati owners club was a good place for all info. Enjoy.
Ben - absolutely superb videos - keep up the great work ……
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
That said, every sub-£35k 911 appears to either have needed a £10k engine rebuild or is only one scored liner away from doing so…
I love that this video & JayEmm's Maser v Aston video are one right after the other in my YT list. 😆
Lol 😂 thanks for watching mine as well! 🙌🙌🙌
@@dadcars I'll be watching until you get that FF.
...i'll keep watching AFTER that too, of course...just sayin'...😅
@@OddsAndSodsGarage that’s awesome! Thanks man! It’s so cool seeing people comment “you’ll get the FF one day!” Feels completely impossible where I am today but if enough people like you find the channel it might just happen!
@@dadcars NGL, I've wanted an FF since the first time I saw one.
I love me a shooting brake...💯
Great vid as always Ben
🙌😊
Had a camaro 6.2 2014 with 1 child, had another littlw one so sold and bought a panamera gts 2014 for the back doors and noise and wish id had your idea about doing a dad cars set of videos. Good luck with the channel. Great idea and your daughters seem delightful. Poor form from you with regards to the ice cream 😉
Awesome couple of Dadcars there! We’ve reviewed a ZL1 🙌 they got icecream the next time we went out 😅
For any car with ‚drive issues‘, the love for the car starts dwindling - get the box serviced, even if just an oil change and fix anything else that bugs you constantly. It will also make it a better sell.
Great cars both. Only dad car for school run. E39 M5 ..I had 5 of them..greatest 4 door..ever
Check out our review on the E39 M5 🤙
Thanks Ben for another great video, love your girls, so precious! I think a comparison video with a GranTurismo S 4.7 would be great! I also would be interested in a comparison of the GranSport 6 speed manual (if you can find one) that would be very interesting indeed. AND... if you ever make it to California... you can use one of my Maseratis if you like! My offer still stands for as long as I live here. Cheers mate! Well done.
DadCars USA is on the bucket list 🤙
Maseratis are mostly about the engine. I park my 20yr old 4200 (a £13k or so 'warts n all') outside the golf club where I work and it always attracts attention, despite being worth less than half the cars in the car park
Rare sight 🙌
I thought I was already subscribed. Am now anyway. You deserve more subs bro 💪
Thanks man! 🤙😊
The 00's temp BMW 3 series I once had as a company car, also had the sticky plastic. So, it's not merely an Italian car thing. It was more a thing of the era: soft touch thermoplastics that did not decay nicely.
True! I’ve seen it in a lot of older German cars too
Great description! And your daughters are super cute!
I think the porsche panamera could be a good car to trade down into although the rear seats may be a challenge, but a cayenne could be an alternative. Keep up the amazing content
If a nice sub 15k V8 panamera came up I’d be very tempted 😊 you’ll never see me having a SUV as a DadCar!
I was thinking the same.
