Lyrics
Some girls used to kiss and run
Never knew what they had done
Some girls always wasted time
Keep you hanging on the line
Some loved horses and always stayed at home
But the Stainsby girls loved the Rolling Stones
Now some had games that you had to play
Making rules along the way
Strange attractions newly found
Pride and passion kicked around
Some girls stole your heart
Like most girls do
But a Stainsby girls could break it in two
And I fell in love, I fell in love
I fell in love with a Stainsby girl
Deepest water Stainsby blue
Names and faces fade away
Memories here to stay
And I fell in love, I fell in love
I fell in love with a Stainsby girl

A small part of Middlesbrough (Stainsby school) will be forever imortalised by this song.....Chris, youre a true smoggie!! ✊
You can't beat the "Smoggies" - great respect for these "Working Class" people. Just got on with life - that was their lot. Brian Clough, Chris Rea - what "Legends". Brian Clough mentions Chris & his family in his book.
Peter from Australia.
Chris wrote this song about his wife Joan.He chased her all round till she became his girl......she went to the Stainsby academy girls school. The Lyrics are so true....!!!!!! "Some girls steal your heart....most still do!!!!! But a Stainsby Girl could break it in two!!!"
I am sure we could all write about those times from our past with similar experience !!
This song has it all. Great lyrics, killer guitar work, and a sax solo to finish off! I f*****g love it!
My favourite version of this song. I also like the laser precision killer synth riff in the instrumental interlude. It's a great tune. Chris Rea is brilliant.
Could never understand how this fine musician and, Vocalist was never huge, when so many lesser talents, were? Melbourne, Australia,
He is huge 👌
Certainly is !
Huge in the eyes of those who love him, but never really got the recognition he deserved…….maybe he was happier that way 🙂
He is a fucking Legend. What a voice and Songwriter/ Musician/ Top, Top Bloke. IF THIS IS WHAT THE BRIT/ ITALIA HYBRID IS LIKE WE SHOULD OF MADE MORE OF THEM! 😁😁
Обожаю его!!! Его музыка это мировое достояние!
Chris was one of my regular customers at a butcher shop in Acklam, Middlesbrough. He was always polite & humble....great guy & fab music
One of the most underrated musician of all time! Love it 💪👌
Really true!
Good song 🎸
I'm proud to be from Middlesbrough, like Chris, and I'm proud to be a Stainsby boy! He's right about the Stainsby girls ... I dated one or two of 'em!
Watcha Mate. Good on You. Wasn't this about The Big Fella's Mrs.? A massive All the Best from Down South...I mean Geographically..I'm spoken for. 😁😁👍
Ken Wiles , I met a guy from Middlesborough way back in 1978 in Magaluf , we danced the night away , never forgot him , Chris Rea, when he. was young reminds me of him , same mop of blonde curly hair , great memories , kept alive by the music of this genius , the master that is Chris Rea
@@lindaelizabethcole3675 Aw, what a fabulous story! I was 18 in 1978 and living in Middlesbrough. Where were you from when you met him in Magaluf?
One of the best from the maestro himself. Great composer, great musician.
A real musician playing real instruments. Pure joy. Not about himself trying to put a message out about himself, just great music put out there to enjoy. Yes, maybe a comment, but about life, not some egocentric such as Sam Smith or Billie Eilish or whatever they are.
It's about the girls from Stainsby School. The video shows you them dressing up and going to a nightclub. Chris said in an interview that the Stainsby Girls always went out with older boys who took them to nightclubs. He said he and his school mates were in love with them but the girls just thought they were immature schoolkids. How times change. Now they all act like immature schookids even into their thirties lol.
@@zak88516and beyond their thirties…..
Nobody will remember the names of those ego centrics you named in ten years. they will know Rea though.
My dad was a policeman in Cleveland police back in the late 60’s early 70’s. One of his duties was at times to supervise the crossing where the pupils crossed to get to Stainsby school, and to this day I feel a connection to this beautiful song.
Captain Cook was born in Marton, not far from Stainsby.
Chris, pure genius. I've followed you for...ever. I've seen you twice, in Austria and...I don't even remember it was so long ago. Tbh I've not seen this video before. An obvious 80's classic when video producers went overboard on the literal meaning of your lyrics, in the style of Dire Straits' 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love'. 'Bluest water, Stainsby blue' accompanied by a shot of..erm...blue ocean water is a classic snippet of the time. I learnt to play air guitar on this track and now I'm an expert in 80's air guitar...sadly, it doesn't pay as well as the real thing... ;)
Just pure raw talent.
A song from his heart I love it❤
This is an absolute classic track. I am 70this year and it is still defining, musically and lyrically - a masterpiece.....
There are 7 songs that make me cry:
Free As a Bird by Supertramp
Time Passages by Al Stewart
Taxi by Harry Chapin
The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel
A Summer Song by Chad and Jeremy
A Horse With No Name by America
Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd
And this one, that jerks out every teardrop in my body
How on earth does this not have more views? One of the quintessential songs of the 80s with one of the best lines ever.
Stainsby by girls loved the Rolling Stones?
@@Karaokejax yes, but the first part of that line too 'Some loved horses and always stayed at home
But the Stainsby girls loved the Rolling Stones' :-)
Plato had answer to that question 3000 years ago
He wasn't from South England, they always got more airplay..
T, T, Teessider, Boro legend, great singer and his dad's ice cream was legendary. Always had one on a Boro home game.
Still one of my all time favourite Chris Rea tracks
A brilliant record. Love all of Chris's stuff but this tops the lot
I was based in London when this was released... I could do anything then. At least some things don”t age. Chris Rea, what a lovely voice!
Love his voice 🎶 brings back great memories 😉🙂
Me 2. And the stainsby girls loved the rolling stones.
He was a northerner, southerners always got more airplay.
This is real music!!! Love it! ❤️
Never understood why he has not had the recognition he deserves
I know mate. The quality of His output and playing should put Him right up there. Other's loss though eh? He seems like a top, top bloke. I can't believe how unlucky He's been with His health. Paddy the same. How come those 2 north eastern music legends have had all the shit when that wanker Sumner ( though taleted) gets away unscathed. 😁 Take Care Fella.👍
The girls were really hot and gorgeous back in those times, just like the music was good.
I listen to more of your music every day...this is one of the greats love you Mr Rea 🎼🎶🎸🎤🎧❤
Being a old 1990's trance lover, i still think as I do 40k per year driving Chris Rea just eats the miles up
Cracking track from one of the most underrated performers ever
To think this entered the UK Top 40 37 years ago today😮😮where the fcuk has the time gone
Absolutely agree! Such a great talent!
Fuckin class,under the radar
He wrote Stainsby Girls for his wife ...
-And some of the girls who worked on British Midland's flights to London. Kirklevington Country Club was the place to go to! Met him there many times! Great guy!
I lived in the Boro on and off throughout the 80s and did my degree in Chris's home town.I lived in the Halls of Residence more or less opposite his Dad's ice cream and chocolate shop. Cracking family...cracking bloke..
I love that comment. Cheers Fella.👍
Spent many days in his dads cafe ....many laughs many frothy coffee's later ... wow great times
Wow. Still sounds like audible nectar.
Чуть хрипловатый голос Криса Им производит чарующее впечатление. Я слушаю его музыку и смотрю с удовольствием его клипы Они замечательны.
Oh, my good Lord, the eighties were the best thoes good old days. I miss sooo much,
Think you are too young!!! If you can remember it you weren't there !!
Крис ты светлая душа! И музыка твоя светлая! !!Спасибо! ❤❤❤
Beautiful voice ,nice to listen HIM👏👌
Pure brilliance
Chris. I wish you could see this comment. Thank you for this song. It's a part of my youth. Cherished!
Always a fan, never a popular choice amongst my mates, but I never gave a F. Saw him in Cardiff live, amazing, the albums, the range, the voice, fab.
Haven't heard this in years...still geat stuff tho'!👍
MAGNIFIQUE CHANSON ET MUSIQUE BRAVO POUR LES MUSICIENS ET LA VIDÉO C EST PLEIN DE FRAÎCHEUR
Ah yers...gotta love those Sainsbury's Girls...great track
Earlfort Terrace Dublin 42 yrs listening to this man , sang my life , thank you Chris xx
Coming up to Christmas. Stumbled across this.
Memories of a young Chris popping in the Club Fiesta to enhance his talent, also this Stainsby girl was one of my mates mam.
Just pure quality.
Well I am a stainsby Girl :)
And how many hearts did you break in two
And is it true
Meet me on the corner,
When the lights are coming on,
And I'll be there.
I promise I'll be there.
Down the empty streets,
We'll disappear into the dawn,
If you have dreams enough to share.
this version much better than from the second version
Have to agree. A lot of the re-recordings on "New Light Throught Old Windows" sounded more like the finished product (e.g. On The Beach, which gained a guitar riff which is now the songs signature feature, or Driving Home For Christmas with the piano which is missing from the original), but Stainsby Girls had all it needed first time around.
Lovely he has wrote songs about his lovely girls too they are all great❤
Boro lad to a original Boro lad a ture Legend. 👍
Timeless!!
only one Chris Rea
Another great song from Chris Rea!
This song takes me back 30 years a classic
superb!!!!
Fantastic slide guitar playing 👍
Chris! You always made beautiful clips!
Nobody does bottleneck like Chris Rea!
Classic.
There's a very Bruce Springsteen feel to this, love it
Definitely can imagine the boss playing this!
Absolutely. Best song he never wrote.
Muy grande Chris Rea🇪🇸
An underated genius
The very best version of this song from the album Shamrock Diaries. It was also the single release. Other versions are vastly inferior including the one included on the Very Best of Chris Rea which, for some odd reason, is not this single version.
underated masterpiece...
His voice, omg
I am fall in love
My darling attended Tranby Croft Girls' School, Hull - early to mid 1960s. Mary is forever my Stainsby/Tranby Girl. 💖
Thank you Chris R. Stay free. R 💚 🍻 😎
Lucky enough to see him in concert in Liverpool back in the day. Great guy.
Bob on. Met a Stainsby girl (well, next door at Mansfield). Stole my heart, I fell in love, she broke me in two. I had a Lotus 7 not a TVR. You have to laugh, don't you?
No!
@@anderssege Miserable get. In my life, you REALLY have to laugh. Death, betrayal, bad choices; I've done 'em all. Still laughing.
one thing is for sure, Girls from Stainsby in Middlesbrough dont look anything like the girl in the video
assholes
all the pretty ones move to Thornaby
I was at Stainsby or acklam grange as it was then called and there was girls just as pretty. So your talking bollocks
@@petermcclelland5926: Well Acklam should have taught you better grammar ; I think you mean : " YOU'RE talking **********., not ' YOUR'. They should have sorted out your bad language , as well.
It's didn't not don't Stainsby its now Acklam Grange, past tense. Also your still talking bollocks
this music was what i breathed with in 90-s
Me too, mate. A gateway back to the good old days of the 80s.
Wow awsome sliding😊😊
Stallion on the guitar
If I'm not mistaken, he married a Stainsby girl 🤔
БРИЛЛИАНТ!!!!!! ЗДОРОВЬЯ!!!!!!!!
The microphone loves Chris' voice
Superbe vidéo avec 🙌 de souvenirs et d’émotions 👏👏👏✌️😍
Marvellous
i remeber stainsby school and the only girls who had anything to do with horses were the ones whose dads were rag and bone men.
I'd love an 1/8th of this mans ability to play 🎸
Yes I've recently got really into his music though I've played various things of his for years. I've just discovered that he didn't start playing guitar until his early twenties!
Rea never was huge in America because he knew he would be needed 30/ 40 years later for the digital generation...glad I didn't listen then...only saw glimpses.
Thank you Great Chris Rea you are the best💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👏👏👏👏
Slušajte CHRISA živjet će te duže uživajte dok možete.
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY CHRIS
Great bloke and star talented doesn't tell it 1 of the boro's finest still enjoy his great music !
Sometimes I've kind the sensation this man knew me deeply already before I was born. Being born in 2006 I'm discovering just now all of his songs, and it looks like he anticipated me hundreds of times, from arrangements to songwriting. Songs like this are very emotional for a teen boy like me... I think Chris should be considered at the same level of Elvis, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Freddie Mercury, The Rolling Stones or The Beatles... he just deserves way more fame than he had. I wish my generation could appreciate this music... they have all ways to listen to it and instead they enjoy some sounds that you can neither define music. Sounds that will die soon, differently from these songs, that instead are going to be eternal 👌🏻✊🏻😏
I’m an 06 baby too yoo

Stainsby girls are nice. But you cannot beet a London girl. South London especially. 👅👅💯💯 regards from south London England 🏴
i remember watching this song in 1985 on sounds on saturday
just been listening to Chris rea lately, always loved stains by girls, I can hear your heart beat, great voice, brilliant days back then.
Saw him on the R.T.H. tour and still remember him on the Radio 1 D.LT. Saturday morning show saying 'Can I just tell my wife I've left the immersion on'. 🙄

Boro lad great.
I went to college there in the 80's. Very friendly people
This is what happens when you have too much talent. Pleased to have bought this song again, this time as a download.
Magique !! Je l'écoute en boucle dans ma voiture...
What a tune and what a musician reminds me of Susan Bland .
