I honestly started learning chinese because of my mother, she really seemed interest in the culture, even more in their medicine, she knows nothing about chinese though, she used to bought me children stories that were traditional in china, all in portuguese, the stories were nice, the artstyle really pretty. So I started learning after getting comfortable with the flow of learning new languages. I stayed because I enjoy every single moment and I met a friend that is chinese, and despite not talking to me much I really look up to him, I hope one day being able to have a full conversation in chinese with him :D

In my opinion, as a student from Canada and grew up in Hong Kong, if you can read and speak it, you're basically good to go. Writing won't be a problem for just conversations or survival since pretty much traditional Chinese is also based on pinyin. However, not growing up with Chinese will be super hella difficult as an adult.

I think this applies to a lot of languages too. Almost no one knows their entire native language, but they know enough to live their life. I’m a native English speaker and as you can see from this comment I can use it to convey plenty of ideas and get by but I don’t know every word in the English dictionary.
But once you figure out the general structure of the language and how things go, you can pretty easily learn new words for your purposes and apply them

I'm slacking off in learning chinese mostly because I don't have a solid reason to learn it and be satisfied with it. I think I'll learn the basics first, enough to be a tourist or suprise a native with simple conversations.

My Chinese has developed interestingly over time: bargaining for clothes at the market? Can do it in Chinese. Buying coffee: can do it in chinese. Buying beer? Can do it in Chinese! And that’s all 😂😂😂

It’s so frustrating to see Gundry mass demonize certain aspects of diet/lifestyle, while also speaking about the benefits of aspects in smoking without acknowledging the damage it does.
He’s always focusing on the wrong bit of information to produce a polarizing and sensationalized opinion that will get clicks. It’s sweet of Dr Mike to think of Gundry in good faith, but I think his statements and approach are intentional. Controversy sells.
So proud of Dr Mike and Dr Belardo for handling this with cool heads. Dr Mike approached with questions of practical application and Dr Belardo pointed out the flaws in Gundry’s claims with evidenced facts. Well done everyone!
