  • We absolutely loved the last black midi album we listened to. So today we are going to be checking out the newest record from the hardest-working band in show business. Hellfire is not an album you want to miss out on. So sit back and relax as a huge fan and a new fan react to the hellish and frantic sound of Hellfire By black midi. Why bother though... Only 2 songs on the album explicitly follow the same guy, Welcome To Hell and The Race Is About To Begin. The rest are about all sorts of different characters, the guy in Sugar/Tzu is described as three feet tall and the guy in Dangerous Liaisons is a farmhand. Like you say, all the songs are describing different sins and grim human nature stuff. Having spent enough time there myself I think Greep's lyrics must be strongly influenced by growing up in London, it's one of those cities like New York City that's full of violence and depravity and the full spectrum of humanity from the top to bottom of the social ladder, a lot of 'characters' in every neighborhood because of how jam-packed it is, and especially nowadays after recent political/economic events the past 15 years there's a really nihilistic, brutal feel to the place, and a lot of deprivation and poverty and class system stuff that is true of the whole country but it's all the more concentrated in a city like that. Really gives that gruesome, surreal vaudeville feel whenever I visit from my hometown in the countryside. All of black midi's albums feature lyrics about relationships to do with power in society, their new song Lumps is about exploitation of sex workers, The Defence is about a brothel owner defending his business as better than the alternatives of the sex trade being forced into riskier forms by criminalisation & how a lot of the men complaining about such a business are hypocrites using prostitutes in secret, Welcome To Hell is about a dude conscripted in the army who is the weakling of the story yet is implied to have killed a prostitute in his rage (possibly out of PTSD) and she's laughed off as a training exercise for the superior officer's men, very true to life, a lot of observational humour and satire about the complex relationships of power in society. The protege exploited by their mentor and the betrayals in Western, Near DT MI being about the Flint water crisis, the scenes of populism and chaos of power games in John L and the gambling and senseless murder and exploitation, all that kind of stuff jumps out at you if you accumulate more than a few weeks lived in a place like London, very heavy city. Not just ragging on the place; I think black midi capture the mood of what it feels like to be from this generation and growing up in the freefall the UK is in to an extreme of artistic expression. They combine such an ultra-modern sound like a rock equivalent to hyperpop, with simultaneously topical yet timeless, intelligent social satire straight out of the best of 18th-century English literature tradition, Jonathan Swift sort of stuff.

Our lungs would rupture if we listened to a single second of king crimson.
