black midi have single handedly convinced me that genre abolitionism is the future of music
It is an exciting concept, to think of genre as just another component of a composition. In a song you can change key, timbre, volume, tempo, etc. and use that to convey some emotion. Why not use genre just like that?
@@MrDanMaster Yeah but they're one of a few that are running a freight train at top speed through it.
@@Pabzooloo do you spend a lot of time on rateyourmusic by chance
@@heckicusdoomicuswizardus1382 I do some music diving once every few months or so. It can be there, bandcamp, UA-cam where I check out new music.
30:10 "does this guy remember all the lyrics on stage?"
one of the things i love about Geordie is that despite being able to memorise insanely complex pieces of music he very often either forgets his own lyrics or gets bored of them and just decides to sing something else or nothing at all. i only realised after sugar/tzu was released that in the original KEXP performance he's speaking gibberish for like half the song because he didn't have the lyrics worked out yet. I also liked a recent show where he changed some of his lyrics to be about Peep Show. There's a good deal of improv about it
That's really cool. Do you have a link to send me towards where he changed his lyrics to be about Peep Show?
@@Jake_Richards might’ve been their glastonbury 2022 set, when geordie introduced the band he also said “mark corrigan on the guitar, jeremy on the guitar”
Black Midi is a band that took me a second to get into, but when I did, I really fell in love with their music and vibe, and your reaction to Schlagenhiem was the gateway for me, feels like we have gone on this band journey together in a way. Great reaction!
I'm glad somebody pointed out how good those lyrics are at that final part of 27 Questions. It's my favourite moment from the album and that's saying something.
I mean what makes the album cover art iconic is the music itself. That's what makes the image memorable cause you had a good experience with it!
HELL YES for Hellfire!
I can say with confidence now that absolutely no band on earth is truly making music like these lads. Completely insane to me that they’re all in their early 20s.
Omnium Gatherum soon for the channel OGs? (Pun acknowledged 😉)
So glad you’re still doing your thing, Six! Big love from across the pond!
I will always do my thing... for better or for worse. It's the only thing I know how to do.

Congratulations on the 100k, the Late Registration reactions will never be bettered by anyone
6 minutes in and can already tell this is going to be another case of a M6 video getting me into an amazing artist
Just went to their sold out show last night so this is perfect timing. Love your videos!
Such a good video man
if the first side is "falling down the stairs music" then The Race is About to Begin is vehicular manslaughter music
my first time listening to this, I was in my car and actually screaming, crying about how amazing this record was...truly made my day, this record
so glad you got around to listening to it, can't wait man.
you're literally the best music reaction channel out there. Your energy is unmatched!
@@mercurialno6 well I'm glad they do! Your content always brightens my day
I’m seeing them live soon and I can’t wait. They’re one of my favorite bands right now.
i’m really loving how your editing has improved and how dynamic your experiences are !! loved this one :)
Your reaction to this album was everything I hoped for and more as usual Mr 6, never change king
This album genuinely changed me, the transitions between the songs is incredible. I never listen to the songs individually because of how satisfying the flow between each song is
I saw Black Midi live 2 nights ago. Holy shit they are chaotic and classy. Masters of show business. Best show I’ve been to.
Oh and btw at the show he did remember all the words. I don’t remember him having a paper or even a music stand in front of him lol.
Really wasn't into this band at first but this album is incredible.
Been waiting on this one! HYPE!!!!
Responding to your question regarding if the lead singer (Geordie Greep) remembers all the lyrics on stage, surprisingly he does. No stands or anything, he's absolutely insane.
Glad to see a new upload!
The first time i heard Hellfire all the way through I knew instantly I had to get it on vinyl. I was not disappointed, it sounds 10x more beautiful and chaotic on record.
this youtube vid is complicated
Just went to go see Black Midi and Black Country, New Road in concert yesterday and it was absolutely incredible!
@@realkaibr Yeah, Black Midi and BCNR are good friends and they have a lot of fan crossover. Not sure if they tour all the time, but I know they're touring right now because BCNR's lead singer/writer left the band right before Ants came out, and the band promised not to play any of their stuff that included him out of respect. They're only playing brand new songs that the rest of the band wrote. They don't have a lot of songs to play, so they've just been an opener for Black Midi recently.
I didn't think much of this album, but experiencing it with you made me love it so much more. I love listening to albums with you
See, this is probably the point of this channel. I should just cut and paste your comment into my about section. In fact... I will.
fuck yes. thank you so much for doing this
Really respect how you play the actual vinyl for your first listen. Sounds like such a simple concept but not a lot of people ever do it. On one hand, it offers a more cohesive listening experience as intended by the band, which is awesome-on the other hand, it doesn’t give much of a break at all to comprehend what it is you just got hit in the face with (*especially* in the case of this one). Suppose anyway that if you wanted to pause the music, you could’ve used your tonearm lever. But I’m kind of glad you didn’t, this album actually somehow works better when it’s able to musically overwhelm you track after track.
This also reminds me just how much better the album does with the much less compressed mix that they used to cut the vinyl. If there’s something that doesn’t need an ounce of dynamic range compression, it’s this. Even the most complicated sections are able to breathe here, with the intensity still intact, and it’s just a testament to the fact that we don’t need that added loudness in our music.
Love the passion for this album
the production of this album is quite fantastic.
This is a top three album this year, maybe even number one. Really great.
Been waiting for this, let’s go :D
Awesome! Love this band so much
Absolutely amazing album, my favorite from the band and my second favorite of the year, hope to catch them live someday, I live in Brazil so sadly that's not very likely :(
I just saw these guys live last night, and their drummer is indeed a goddamn phenom! He made a meal of the entire set, and regularly improvised even more complex fills and solos than what’s in the album. And he was the one giving cues to the rest of the boys. He literally carries the whole band on his back and makes it look easy.
To answer your question: the singer Geordie Greep indeed has all his lyrics memorized. It’s honestly pretty incredible how well he can improvise his delivery while not missing a word.
Such a brilliant album, a true modern prog masterpiece
Just saw them live with Black Country, New Road a few days ago. Incredible
Great reaction as always! Would love to see your ranking of all the albums you have reacted too. What are your favourites?
Love the work you put into making all your videos stimulating and engaging, much like the album you're reacting to here!
Also, some 2-cents here: Cam (bassist) is possibly one of my favorite rock bassists with how his parts always add, never subtract. He's the biggest inspiration for me taking learning bass seriously.
**starts headbanging so hard that my spine deforms🥵* *
Man this shit sucks🔥🔥
I'm gonna see these folks tomorrow and i can't wait.
I love your energy and steez.
musically off top from Black Midi, but give BC Camplight "Shortly After Take Off" , I picked up the vinyl not that long ago and i can't stop listening to it.
Mercurial you absolutely need to listen The Mars Volta, I'm pretty sure you will fall in love with them. Check out Deloused in the Comatorium I beg you
loved the Jethro Tull mentioning , Barlow´s drumming is really special to me
make an experience video on Crumb!
I know you aren't big on the social media game, but I think since your videos are so well edited, there are a lot of moments that would work well on a platform like tiktok. Could maybe be good for building more of an audience. Just an idea, love the content man :)
hey mr six. i see you're using the dt 770s. do you have issue with how much pressure they're putting on your head? i cant seem to keep them on at all without getting a headache or jawache. if you have any fixes for this i'll be forever grateful
I haven't really done anything to them. I just took them out of the box and put them on my head. Do you mean they are too tight?
@@mercurialno6 yeah! they seem way too tight for my head. i hadn't done anything either and to my knowledge my head isnt really abnormally large or anything. but it doesn't seem like they really come with a way to loosen them at all!
Bend the headband a little in the middle to relieve some of the clamp force, and/or store them over a box or pile of books to expand them.
Like the Arthur Brown reference in the description
Love you

these are my recommendations and i hope you’ll check out few of them cause these what i have listed is so good!
Fair
Those patterns on the album cover are so complicated so this album must cost a lot of money at Dan Flashes
Luv it
INTENSE
true music for intellectuals
If you loved the music I highly recommend checking out the music videos as well they are just as interesting. Especially Welcome To Hell.
Did you script your intro Merc? That was a perfectly spoken couple minutes before you spun up the album.
I'm seeing them live in bristol in November
This album fucks…
WOOOOOOOOOOO
u should rlly react to 6 feet beneath the moon by king krule! it’s my fav and i’m sure you’ll love it too
While I’m not in the same boat that this is the AOTY, Welcome to Hell is one of those avant-garde songs that I am in love with to a surprisingly high degree. Last year it was “Boys at School” by Spellling.
Welcome to Hell is very well orchestrated and has great momentum and vivid lyrics. I also love the singer’s voice. Very unique.
you really really really need to listen to the bedlam in goliath or Deloused in The Comatorium by The Mars Volta… most talented band EVER
I'm telling you man in 5 - 10 years time this album will be considered a classic
Vol.1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present
Please do Random Access Memories by Daft Punk!
I love u mr 6
Mercurial number 6... 6... 6...
Ever thought of listening to ummon by SLIFT
check out horseshit on Route 66 by the garden
Should take a peek at Viagra Boys new album Cave World.
Please listen to Gemini Rights by Steve Lacy!
AOTY
finally
If you get the chance I'd highly recommend Draining Love Story by Sewerslvt
An interesting album but not Kiss Land. Abel sold out all 20 stadiums on this North American tour which ended last night in Toronto. Perhaps he deserves another reaction from you.
😎👍 Pink Floyd and Michael Buble’ had a baby?
Fire… I’ll take you to burn… I’ll see you burn!
If I had to describe black midis cover artwork I would simply describe it as “black MIDI” as in the actual music genre. When you watch a black MIDI piano cover, all the notes are mulching together in a way that doesn’t make sense.
PATIENT NUMBER NINE PLEASE LISTEN
You talk about wanting complicated music and the complain that the album cover is too complicated lol
I really dislike 'self indulgence' in music, so Van Halen solos or 'shredding' is off the table and just pisses me off. Although complicated music can be fantastic, Tool being the best example i can think of.
Not the biggest fan of Van Halen either but I still enjoy their music and don't get what your saying at all. All music is self indulgent, anyone who makes a song is making music that they enjoy or like playing. When you have a guitarist or musician that talented and that's what they like playing and they're just having fun then what's the point. I'd rather listen to an artist enjoying what they're playing then one who just plays what people want to hear.
black midi is more dumb, boring and dreadful (in a bad way) than it is complicated. therefore it doesn't really matter how complicated it is (which it isn't).
Feel free to play and sing the race is about to begin on your channel to fully illustrate your point friend
I love nice, soothing chill-out cool jazz like Black Midi, gonna play this for my grandparents they love chill jazz
:-)
I swear you've commented on every single song I've ever listened to
